Abdul El Sayed on JD Vance calling him "little weasel": "They're carnival barkers, you hear them, too many of them are Ohio. It's funny. JD Vance called me a little weasel. I'm like no, no, no. What you’re talking about is a f***ing wolverine. You can take your Buckeye and shove it somewhere else."

u/sto_brohammed 1d ago
I've seen this other places and comments misunderstanding the "wolverine" thing, thinking it's referring to the comic book character. Michigan is called "the Wolverine state" (more on why later) and the University of Michigan's sports teams are called the Wolverines. El Sayed attended University of Michigan.
The nickname for Michigan comes from the Toledo War, a "war" where Michigan and Ohio "fought" over what is now Lucas County, Ohio. The two armies largely got lost, extremely drunk and wasted state money so the war was basically called off. That's oversimplifying but the article above is a decent summary. The vast majority of the fighting occurred in bars in the area. During the war the press in Ohio referred to Michiganders as "wolverines", which is to say greedy, nasty animals from the frozen north. Michiganders accepted the term and use it to this day. The term "Michigander" has a similar history of taking on a pejorative but that's another story.
This is especially appropriate as Vance is, of course, an Ohioan and while the rivalry is largely centered around sports these days it's not confined just to sports.
For anyone interested in the Toledo War I'd suggest Michigan's Early Military Forces from Wayne State University Press.

Wolverines are also mustelids which is the same family as weasels which makes the response extra clever
81
u/thefassdywistrin 1d ago
Also, weasels have a reputation for being clever little thieves. Wolverines have a reputation for defending their territory to the death.
It's a very clever line.

He's such a fucking chad. Smart, funny, and utterly unwilling to accept shit without clapping back. The first time I saw him talk I thought "I hope to God he's been married for twenty years because they're gonna talk to every woman this guy has so much as worked with in the past." Looked it up, happily married for twenty years to a woman who is very impressive on her own right. They did talk to EVERYONE and tried some bullshit but nothing stick because it was bullshit. A physician who chose to work in public health rather than the lucrative private practice he could have run This dude has his shit ON POINT.
I mean anything can happen but he's just fucking exploding with confidence and I'm for it.

u/sf_frankie 1d ago
Read the dudes Wikipedia page if you haven’t yet. He was a three-sport athlete in HS and captain of all three teams. Gave the commencement speech after graduating from UoM Phi Beta Kappa with highest distinction. Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker at the commencement. He was so impressed that he pulled him aside after the speech and encouraged him to consider public service. He then got a full ride to UofM med school, led a medical mission to Peru, received a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford where he received a doctorate of philosophy and earned a full blue as captain of their men’s lacrosse team (an award for sporting excellence). Then came come and finished med school at Columbia and instead of practicing medicine he went into public health. All before turning 30.
Most of his work in public health has been in Detroit post bankruptcy which is basically hard mode yet he’s managed to be successful.

I did see one of the commercials against him while watching a football stream last weekend, with something about a mother deciding she was going to change everything she believed in (regarding her being a lifelong Democrat), because he talked about a recent school shooting in a way that she didn't like.
I remember my thoughts at the time being something like, "yeah, this feels like an honest complaint by a real person."

u/tendollarstd 1d ago
Soooo, what kind of fun local centric history tidbits do you have to offer?
15
u/ZedekiahCromwell 1d ago edited 1d ago
Plenty. Just recently we discussed the Bunker Hill Mine event where during a labor dispute, 1000 miners hijacked a train, loaded it full of dynamite, rode it as a massive group, and drove it into the company mill and detonated the dynamite, exploding it. Then, in 1905, the governor of Idaho was assassinated by dynamite strapped to his front gate. When he opened it, it triggered, instantly killing him.
A little before that, when we were talking immigration in the late 1800s and the Chinese Exclusion Act, I asked them if anyone knew why Garden City was named as such (it's a city literally touching Boise). No one knew, so I explained that it was named after the Chinatown that had developed there outside of Boise, referring to the "Chinese Gardens". A major street through the valley is named Chinden, but almost no one knows why. It is the center road of Garden City, and is a shortening of "CHINese garDENs".
Boise doesn't have very much of a Chinese community left (it's very small, but present) because the collapse of mining towns and local discrimination drove many out of the area in the 1900s.
Edit: some typos

3
u/ZedekiahCromwell 1d ago
I'm glad you enjoyed it! My students definitely loved it as I painted the scene of 1000 riotous miners swarming a train and riding it like a bat out of hell to go blow up their company's property and cheer and drink while watching!

I knew the about the state mascot aspect, but I didn't know the history. But it's also amusing to me because if El Sayed had little tufts of hair on either side, his facial hair is not terribly far off from Logan's. 😅 P.S. JD can go kick rocks.
11
u/bu11fr0g 1d ago
another part is that El Sayeds opponent wears U-Michigan jackets in his ads and criticized El Sayed as anti-Michigan. But the trump-loving syncophant never even went to the University of Michigan. Meanwhile, El-Sayed gave the student commencement speech.
4
u/Redeem123 1d ago
The important thing is that everyone in Ohio knows exactly what he’s saying. There’s nothing stronger in America than mascot hatred.

I think the comment is all university rivalry though. University of Michigan's mascot is the wolverine and Ohio State is the buckeye.
JD Vance went to Ohio State. It's a major rivalry so a comment like this in front of what likely contains many Michigan fans is spicy

Oh brother I love your optimism and I wish I shared it, but im deep in MAGA country in SW Ohio not far from Cincy, and they are Trump or die here. They dont put the Trump signs on the lawn anymore and they dont wear the hats out of shame for what they've done to this country, but their hatred for anything that isnt a lily-white straight Christian man takes precedent over anything else. I personally know people that would watch their own child suffer and die so that they could continue to pursue the policies that makes their children suffer and die. As long as a liberal out there also suffers, thats all that matters to these people. Their hate trumps any other rational thought or feeling you could imagine.
I cannot stress enough how hate and fear are the chief platforms on which these people operate. Their entire being is based around the absolute hatred of anyone who doesnt look or sound like them. So much so that it has truly become their entire identity.

i used to believe otherwise when i was younger and more hopeful but after 20 years of voting I dont think someone with his name will be ever be a democratic presidential candidate. if we cant get a boring center-right white woman we will never get a progressive brown man.
we will continue fighting the local and state level elections on the ground… but any post obama presidency is for people who look and sound white. we had one chance, elected the most white-speaking, corporate/war friendly neoliberal black man we could find… and the backlash afterwards, to a firmly moderate centrist black man, has been insane. literally repealing civil rights because he had the nerve to recognize a systemic problem one time. that was it for the foreseeable future.
2
u/SnepbeckSweg 1d ago
I don’t think there’s enough evidence to support this claim, tbh. That said, I would hate for Michigan to lose someone who looks like they can be a great Senator. If he has national aspirations, I think he would be smart to continue building his resume in the halls of Congress for a little while first.

That's if he runs for preseident. There are a whole class of new, younger politicians who are more interested in restoring our checks & balances than they are rising to the office of the presidency. The Senate holds the key to those reforms, so it makes sense that politicians like El-Sayed in Michegan and Ossoff have publicly, and repeatedly, stated they're not interested in running for president.

u/niberungvalesti 1d ago
The sterile emotionless run through consultants approach to Democratic politics has allowed the Republicans to run the board by appealing to emotion for decades now. And the media aids and abets that approach by running what generates more drama.
It's about time that people fired up about what they believe in as Democrats or the left actually appeal to voters with some passion instead of whatever Hakeem Jefferies thinks passes as appeal.
