The "flying" variant will not be road legal, if they even sell any of these at all. Normal Roadsters wont have these boosters.
49
u/mongolian_horsecock 4d ago
The air tank they are using, a COPV tank has been a pain point for SpaceX having blown up at least twice, one time taking out an entire rocket. Having that thing a few feet away from you is crazy.

I mean the non flying roadster has has been around for 10 years and hasn’t been ready for sale yet. I imagine the flying one will be another 20 or so.

Tesla licensed the Elise vehicle architecture from Lotus, but they redesigned it pretty significantly, such that only 6% of the parts were the same between the two cars. The Elise shared more parts with the Toyota Celica (engine and transmission) than it did with the Tesla Roadster.

Purely a publicity stunt.
No vehicle with those capabilities would ever be approved for road use, assuming it were ever actually released to the public for purchase (press any button to doubt...).
Besides that, the maneuvers were clearly executed by a program; the car never had a driver. No human is going to be able to handle a steering wheel and three-dimensional rocket engines in real time.
Worse still, this is in absolutely no way a "flying" car.
It is, at best, a jumping car and perhaps a controlled landing car.
According to Musk, the engines use compressed air so they can be recharged without special fuel. Cool, but good luck with any sustained flight.

u/QuantumVAC 4d ago
Not a fan of Elon and I don’t think the car will ever be released but the point of that was to show it can generate its own downforce which would actually help with normal driving since acceleration, cornering, braking, basically all aspects of controlling a vehicle rely on a strong grip with the ground.
42
u/qwertyisdead 4d ago
Except that it wasn’t moving fast enough to generate downforce….
The whole thing was a gimmick. Nothing more, nothing less. They hollowed out a car and strapped some air jets to it and the plebs are mind blown!
21
u/apogeeman2 4d ago
People downvote you but you are correct.
Was it a cool tech demo? Of course!
Is the car full of boosters and fuel to support the limited amount of movement we just saw with absolutely no additional fuel to drive any further? Most likely.
Hell it may be so stuffed in there it was driven remotely with no room for a single human.

u/blarglefart 3d ago
Uh it is generating down force, just without it being a side effect of drag. They aren't the first racecar to do this
4
u/midnightbandit- 3d ago
You don't need to drive fast to generate downforce if you have a fan car. Have you never heard of the Brabham BT46 F1 car? Or the McMurty Spierling? Or the McLaren F1?

I'd imagine it's technically a "track only" kind of feature for that reason. They're not the first to use a fan like this so ideally they've considered that
4
u/UndeadDog 3d ago
There’s a car made by a different company that already uses this technology. Top Gear tested it on a track.
2
u/leftlanespawncamper 3d ago
Fan cars have existed for 50+ years going back at least to the Chapparal 2J. It doesn't need to move to generate downforce as it has fans that move the air out from underneath the car.
2
u/Conscious_Theory_706 3d ago
When you go to high school, you'll have science and physics lessons. You'll learn about ways to create a force, e.g., by lowering air pressure on one side.
Or you can just do some minimal research before accusing others of using gimmicks. Tesla and SpaceX have amazing engineering teams.
6
u/Sennten 4d ago
Havent racecars been doing that for a whole now? I remember that video of the race car going upside down and still driving just fine because of it.
4
u/imahumanbeinggoddamn 3d ago
Fan cars go back to like 1977. People still play around with the concept today but it stays firmly in the realm of concept/experimental racecars because it is OP as fuck and not legal in any actual racing series as far as I know. The first ones actually had a brief stint in F1in 1978 but we're pretty much immediately banned.

u/happy_hawking 4d ago
Those boosters use pressured gas or air. So probably air. Will draw a lot of energy from the battery to build up that amount of pressure, but technically feasible without any extra propellant.
Wouldn't be a good tech for a electric vehicle if it would require anything but electricity.

Sounds like a big fan sucking air from under it... probably with skirts to help seal it to the track. See the chaparral fan car https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaparral_2J (1.25-1.5g down force is enough to stick it upside down).

They had thrusters like this on the Apollo missions over 50 years ago and we have absolutely no reason to believe that the “car” in the video was anything more than a lightweight shell with thrusters on it. It’s not just a publicity stunt, it’s a complete scam. The physics don’t make any sense for a two ton vehicle and even if they did, there’s no way this thing would be “street legal”.
