Preaching To The Converted

I remember when they announced old world was coming back. I was pumped. I never got into Warhammer Fantasy, but now older, taste more refined, I could easily see myself stepping into the Old World. I was praying that they would take a risk and revamp Warmaster and try fuse together Old World players and Warmaster by making it 10mm.

Around the same time, WARHAMMER TOTAL WAR came out. I got heaps of mates into it. Heaps of those mates LOVED it. We sunk HOURS into that game, co-oping, playing massive battles. Then I told them about Old World coming out. They were equally pumped. I showed them pictures when it got announced and they had the same thoughts that I did - why the hell didn't they try and emulate the look and feel of an EPIC battle by making it 10mm?

I know people push back on this and go "But what most normies who get into the game dont want to paint 10mm, its too hard". Most normies dont want to also paint 100+ models with some basic form of detail just to resemble a small fraction of the epic scale battles that GW has been selling them on the Total War games.

It just feels like such a drop of the ball here. I know its many years too late for this post, probably. But I need to just vent it out there.

Because the whole point of Old World was bringing back Fantasy, never about Warmaster.

Actually I think 10mm is great idea for fantasy rank
and flank.
It takes less space. Smaller minis mean smaller painting area, but you don't really have to worry about details. It can be played on smaller tables. It's probably cheaper, if you can find the models.

Yes definitely cheaper. And luckily nowadays even without owning a 3d printer there are a couple of online shops.

I hope GW never touches warmaster. Its such a great rule system as is.

The only argument for them touching it is that GW level marketing would bring in a bunch of new players.

It would do, but if the Epic community is anything to go by, only a small number of the Legions Imperialis players have transferred to the existing Epic community. They have either just stopped playing epic scale altogether or jumped onto whatever else is the new shiny.

Really? I don’t think that’s true where I live. We’ve got a pretty active Legions Imperialis scene.

It might vary by region perhaps. I've run events in the UK (south west) including Legions games over the past couple of years and we've really struggled to sell tickets.  Boxes of minis on discount in quite a few stores I know (how often do you see that for GW stuff?) and very few new releases, makes me think I'll be surprised if its still about in a few years. Its a real shame and a waste.

Second that.

I mean, I was confused to find Old World was 28mm, but I also recognize that was my own misunderstanding of it and Fantasy Battle that caused that. Fantasy Battle was also 28mm, and Old World is its revival. Just play Warmaster (Revolution for me) as is and be grateful you're not having to deal with GW pricing on these models. You know they could find a way to make an army for this game into a $120 box if they really wanted to.

No clue how making Old World 10mm would bring Warhammer Fantasy and Warmaster together. I mean those are completely different game systems. Also why replace two great games?
Also Warmaster needs no bringing back. There are more miniatures available than ever from various shops and the rules have been improved over time as well. Just grab a friend and play.
Lastly playing The Old World / Warhammer Fantasy in 10mm definitely makes sense to either play on smaller tables or do more massive battles. Same as there is a 15mm Warhammer 40K community. Totally makes sense for some people.
I just restarted Battle Fleet Gothic last year and I am so happy GW leaves the community alone and the game is better than ever, with more models and rules available than ever.

I am very guilty of neglecting painting, I have an enormous fantasy box of shame... worth a lot of money now. I got into warmaster too late and had trouble finding minis so I have just dipped my toes with cardboard proxies. I think I would find it a little less demanding painting 10mm. In a weird way because they are smaller it seems less work, I know that makes no sense and probably explains why I always end up finishing painting by garden gate but not the fence panels

I play One Page Rules: Age of Fantasy Regiments with 10mm models, and would highly recommend giving it a try as it seems like the game you are looking for. It is basically epic Warhammer Fantasy, it plays like WFB, but with the extra dice rolls like wound rolls removed. I have always disliked the command roll and limited army rosters of warmaster, so OPR is perfect. Plus I get to digitally kitbash all the extra units, like dread saurians, Mortis engines, mega gargants etc, so the hobby side is really inspiring too

He can just play Warhammer Fantasy or The Old World in 10mm if he wants to. Why change the rule system if he seems to like it?

Because he stated his specific desire is to replicate the massive battles depicted in total war. Playing massive battles with 10mm models with the WFB or WOW ruleset will be a very lengthy and high maintenance process, doable, but not feasible with a regular gaming routine. Again the problem with Warmaster rules is that because of the limited release schedule it had, the army rosters are very small, especially compared to the rosters afforded in your typical Total War game. My opinion is that One Page Rules takes care of both of those problems, the flow of the game is much quicker, while retaining the spirit of a WFB style game, plus the army rosters are comparable to the Total War or WFB rosters. Added to that if you are familiar with wargaming and especially GW style rulesets, OPR is very easy to pick up, and is very forgiving in that you can use any or all of the advanced rules to your tastes. I was quite sceptical about trying OPR at first but having played for a while, I do think it reflects more of the Warhammer Fantasy feel over Warmaster in how it plays, which still has a place in my heart

I mean, 40k is more popular than fantasy and look how well legions imperialis is working out (hint: it's falling flat on its face). People like small scale in theory, but when it comes time to actually doing it they get cold feet. I think it has to do with the lack of modeling opportunities and availability of 28mm terrain and whatnot.

I don't think GW will touch warmaster ever - it was never popular even when they made it. The people who the game appeals too are one step away from historicals, which offer plenty of rulesets and cheap models.

Play warmaster, paint armies and start a local community if you don't already have one. We are in a golden age for warmaster and the LAST thing we need is GW involved.

Part of me was convinced they would do 10mm. With digital sculpting you can get some great detail at that scale. There are a lot of great sculpts available on Etsy.

28 mm is industry standard, it allows for much more detailed and nuanced minis. Warmaster is cool as it is, it is more about 'feel' and large scale. But it's a completely different game, great for what it does.

YES! I'm kinda disgruntled they didn't go this way actually. And would be easier to maintain smaller shelf space - infantry box, cavalry box and whatever fancy stuff you need box.

Issue is that huge part of Fantasy Battles has always been kitting out your special command doods which is hard to do in 10mm scale.

But I'll literally sell off my whole 40k collection the minute plastic 10mm fantasy gets released.

I'm sorry but I irrationally maybe absolutely hate resin for models
