Mod Announcement Mod announcement: new rule that use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared or disclosed

A new rule has been added to r/waterloo in regards to A.I.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared, either in title, or the first line of text in original post

Moderators may and will take action in good faith regardless of compliance with this new rule.

The reason we're doing this is to try not to be too far behind in response to the use of this technology, and encourage genuine engagement within our community.

Recently mods have been removing posts of various low-quality effort such as A.I. images, and publications purporting to be news or 'news style' articles that are suspected to be A.I. - but also fail to provide the identity of any legitimate living creator/author within the Region of Waterloo or otherwise.

This is an effort to remove or reduce poor quality, deceptive, disinformation, and various other posts made in bad faith.

Please direct concerns or comments to mod mail.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mod Announcement Changes to Flair in r/Waterloo

It was recently pointed out that the flairs referencing the 2025 election are maybe a teeny bit outdated.

After discussion among the moderator team, it was determined that while the language was outdated, the flairs still were useful in identifying sudden influxes of new accounts to certain threads. The flair language has therefore been updated and will be applied as users post or comment. The flairs refer to the approximate period when a user became somewhat active in r/Waterloo. This is not the same as the date account was created (which you can see on each user's page) and not when the very first post was made in this subreddit.

As explained by the previous flair announcement:

The intent of this flair is not to target newbies, nor to say that we don't want people to join the subreddit. All are welcome in the subreddit. The intent is to make it clear to readers when there is an influx of unknown accounts which push certain narratives in the comments. This does happen, especially on posts about certain controversial subjects. People should know when these they are new accounts and not established community members.

While everybody should be aware if there is an obvious astroturfing campaign, all users remain responsible for using their best judgement when determining credibility of submissions and comments. Please consider the merit of ideas rather than the reputation of a commenter.

Feel free to submit any comments or constructive feedback below, or to comment and receive your new flair. There may be further tweaks to come and this flair system could be discontinued at any time.

Thank you for reading, and stay safe out there in all this snow.

Update 2026-01-23: New flair is out again, 2025 users should now have "Regular" status, and users new since 2026 will be noted.

Sidewalk snow clearing debate leaves little middle ground as age divides opinion

Almost 60 per cent of respondents agree strongly or somewhat that city hall should take on sidewalk snow clearing, even if it has to spend more. Just over 30 per cent disagree, strongly or somewhat.

Liberated edition.

Sticky Toffee Pudding in Waterloo

I'm not from Waterloo, but coming in for a birthday for someone who loves sticky toffee pudding. Any advice from the locals on some good places we can grab a lunch/dinner and enjoy a British style warm sticky toffee pudding?

I've done some searching - and see a few options:

  1. Malt & Barley Public House
  2. Whale and Ale
  3. Beertown (see some reviews mention it, but older reviews.

Open to any suggestions. I'd bring some with us, but then would need to find a place that is open to bringing own dessert (cutting fee I suspect).

Thanks in advance! Planning for next weekend.

Do not order from the Famous Owl of Minerva!

I should say halt before you order (idk what I’m doing on this platform) I never post but this has made me feel so bleh about the whole situation. I ordered the tteokbokki rose from the Korean Ddukbokgi & Bunsik that inclued the rice cakes, glass noodles, bacon and sausage. I only received the rice cakes. I did order Uber Eats so I contacted them first. They told me to go through the store. Guess what? It’s not a store and is operated through “The famous Owl of Minerva.” I call them to get a refund and I was put on hold for 30 mins. I call back and they put me on hold for 5 mins before they hung up. I tried calling back after and they immediately send me to voicemail. I work 6 days a week and was trying to treat myself tonight and it sucks. Just a heads up, there are more ghost kitchens than you think.
Edit: I want to add I am no way saying uber drivers are responsible for any of this. Uber Eats drivers have been nothing but the best and their service will never be reflected on reviews on restaurants !

BKK In Uptown

Post image
73 Upvotes

Wanted to share my experience with BKK, which recently opened in Uptown Waterloo.

My favourite restaurant for Thai food in Toronto is Koh Lipe and BKK is a sister restaurant.

So fucking good, what you see is Khao Soi, Tum Thai and Prik Gaeng Moo Krob. I chose medium spice level and it already had a kick, be careful with Thai spice levels as they’re not messing around.

Probably the best Thai food in the region now, mind you it’s a bit more upscale compared to the others in the region. Also a little pricey, but still worth it in my opinion.

Found envelope at Pink Crow Cafe

I found an envelope containing cash at Pink Crow Cafe in Waterloo today. It was tucked among some cards from Christina MacLellan, Artist.
I handed the envelope to the café staff so the owner can hopefully get it back.
If you think it may be yours, please contact Pink Crow Cafe and be prepared to describe the envelope/cards and contents so they can verify it belongs to you.
I’m posting this because I’d really like to help the person who lost it get it back.

There is a Right to Walk event taking place at Lakeside Park in Kitchener this Sunday at 2pm I wanted to share!

Unfortunately, there have been 3 sexual assaults in this area. If you can't come to the walk, stay vigilant and visit the WRPS Instagram for photos and a short video of the suspect.

Stay Safe!

Looking for Banquet Hall for 600

Our Waterloo sports association is looking to host an athletic banquet in August or September of 2027 and was wondering what venues are good spots to house up to 600 people for the event. Anywhere in Waterloo Region could work.

We figure the player, their parents and possibly some siblings for 10 teams of 12 players each.

We are a non-profit, so we're hoping to keep costs down for venue booking, but understand that for that size we may need to budget for more.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Which of these would you recommend for a family? Which is more family friendly with some sort of community feel( kids playing outside, Halloween spirit this time of year, good playgrounds), nice trails, good neighbours.

The Unhoused of Waterloo have something to say to the Waterloo Mayoral Candidates (and a question) - A view from the tents.

Hi Reddit,

We are some of the unhoused of Waterloo. You may not recognize us as we do our best to blend in. We do not loiter in public spaces. Some of us work part time (which all goes to rising food costs and other survival items), or navigate having to pay high transit fares while GRT drivers snicker under their breath when they deny us boarding for being a loonie or even 25 cents short.

We're not sure what is worse: going to Kitchener to get a low income pass that we a) cannot afford to even travel to never mind pay for such a pass and surrender our personal info to staff who routinely blurt out personal info, b) having been victims of privacy breaches that lead to our poverty, c) or being told to move faster with our belongings when the well paid GRT operators refuse to lower the bus to allow us to board.

Either way, we now see the cascading effects of poverty and how we have lost trust in the system, public officials, and how so many pass the buck or diffuse their responsibility. Funny that it costs more to take the bus in Waterloo ($8 round trip) than on the TTC.

The fact is the homeless population is far worse than what public officials may tell you. It was galling to watch Dorothy McCabe, who makes more money in a year ($188K) than we will ever make in a decade. Many of us had affordable housing costs last decade and ok(ish) paying part time jobs. One thing most Waterlooians don't understand is that a lot of us have hidden disabilities that prevent us from working good or high paying white collar jobs. Jobs that Jerry Jiang loves to go on about—sleeping on factory floors may be socially and economically acceptable on another large continent, or Canada in the 1800s to gain upward mobility, but not now. Neither is a 9am-9pm-6 days a week work culture (996) that in any event we couldn't work due to our hidden disabilities (office politics / nepotism / TFW issues aside). Or travel 1-2 hours by bus, bike, walking to get to/from any such high paying jobs that don't allow part time work or flexible work hours.

Slipping into deep poverty has been profoundly life changing. Your mind changes on who/what you can trust and the ability to think about long term / life planning is extinguished. Thinking beyond a week of what you can or want to accomplish is simply not rational or helpful.

Surviving day to day is a full time job. From where you sleep, to where you bathe, where you store your personal belongings, and where you get food takes all day every day and is downright exhausting. It is a trap that one cannot escape easily. Which is what justice Michael Gibson has ruled that s. 15 of the Charter now applies to us—something Dorothy McCabe, Jerry Jiang (being a private landlord/property manager means they must keep the rose coloured sunglasses on all the time), and Shannon Weber (we don't get your text messages, mainly because we don't have a phone or a plan that could go towards nutritious food since we no longer have proper kitchen facilities to store leftovers) seem to ignore. These three have publicly supported actions that would take away these constitutional rights from us, despite multiple court decisions saying the same thing now.

Charter rights flowed from the immense sacrifices made from the two world wars that Canada participated in and the atrocity of human rights abuses that flowed from those conflicts. It does make us question what goes through some of the mayoral candidates' heads during the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day (less than 30 days to go), which remembers not just those who never came home, but those conscripted to fight for Canada against their will, national unity, and Canadian sovereignty, and all the women who supported the war effort both at home and abroad. It also raises a question if they even wear a poppy at all (some of us are homeless veterans).

We acknowledge Jeyas who has publicly affirmed our Charter right to shelter ourselves on public land when truly accessible shelter space is not available in this city. Thank you Jeyas. So has Jamie Hari, whom we understand got a round of applause when talking about the severe wealth inequality at the Mayoral Debate at Laurier recently. Thank you Jamie.

We have yet to hear any words from Dorothy McCabe on that other than saying the courts are infringing on municipal powers. Courts have always constrained governments from abusing their powers throughout the common law system. It is very surprising that some of the mayoral candidates can't or won't accept this fundamental pillar of a liberal democracy.

Now onto the question(s) for each Mayoral Candidate:

Will each of you (that includes you Dorothy, who we understand has a Reddit account on here) commit to using your strong mayor powers to fire or investigate any city staff members found by to have violated our Charter rights or engaged in misfeasance of public office?

Given the historical municipal integrity and severe trust issues that Waterloo faced with the RIM Park debacle (where all council members were not reelected), how will you ensure that senior staff (including regular staff) are held strictly accountable to the public and the law this time around when dealing with Waterloo's most vulnerable who have a Charter right to shelter on city property?

Thank You Reddit of Waterloo
