Announcement MOD POST: Reminder that “Weird A.I.” jokes are still banned

Once in a while we get people really up in arms about this

The thing is, we have to remove multiple of these posts a day

If the overwhelming majority of the subreddit wanted them back then fine, but it’s the same joke every single time and it would be like 3/4ths of what was posted to the sub

Again, we listen to the community here, if the overwhelming majority want them back we will reinstate them, but I’ve only seen 3-4 people complain (they’ve been very vocal about it though)

And to be clear, this also includes this tweet from Al made in June of 2023. The Weird Al/A.I. joke was much less prevalent then, so it was unique, but as has been said, it quickly ran its course.

I would think something like this should be an exception, since it came from Weird Al himself.

Plus, if Al makes a new album, I bet he'll have a song about A.I.

If Al made a new post about it, then we would allow it. But as this post is old, it serves no real purpose to the community.

And if Al made a song about A.I., then we would certainly allow it. But of people started making posts about the new Weird A.I. song only to make the joke, then they would be removed.

Yeah. It’s kind of like the bait shop posts. They were funny at first but after a few of them the joke gets worn out.

Only if you keep it short, since sans serif typefaces make it harder to read long passages.

Absolutely true story: I tried to ask people to accompany me to his concert in Boston earlier this year, and a non-zero number of people told me they were wondering why I wanted them to come to an A.I. conference

A better solution would be to change all the fonts so that “I” has the crossbars on the top and bottom so it’s easily distinguishable from a lowercase l.

I always have to pause for a second to try to figure out are they saying AI or Al. Because Al is my immortal hero, but AI is the worst thing ever and will lead to the end of humankind. Somebody should sue AI for trying to confuse everybody into thinking they made timeless music instead of creating garbage and making people lazy.

Thank you! I’ve never understood the impulse to post the same joke that has been done a million times. Like, what goes into the line of thinking that I’m going to do this NOW and just wait for the responses.

I'm fine with that, as long as everyone here quits calling him Al in post titles like y'all are best friends with him and start calling him Weird Al again so I'm not confused every single time a post shows up in my feed.

Sounds like somebody who has never attended one of his concerts, where he specifically tells us all that people are sometimes unsure how to address him, then literally sings "You Can Call Me Al" as his answer to the question. You're welcome not to take him at his word on that for yourself, but I'm just going to laugh at you if you try to tell me to ignore what the singer himself has chosen to say in live concert more than once, to thousands of people each time. For the record, you sound especially silly whining about it when the subject is discussion of him in a Reddit sub, as opposed to name-dropping by implying he personally called us on the phone about something to offer advice.

I promise it isn't an issue of how to address him. it is literally an issue about how l and I are dislayed on modern systems, nothing more and how AI and Al look the same in my feed.

The stuff about how to address him was mostly in jest, oooof. But, you know, feel free to guess what you think of me and my listening preferences all you want.
