REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

(Click here to apply to the Mod team!) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf1gdFvlauq1y6F22S7cCUzIptVkYP8oOBmS6XS68Bz-YWykA/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=103554154763378178256

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

What is this? Either from the Great Lakes around Michigan or just random stones, not certain. Gray/blue tones.

REQUEST got this "malachite" belt buckle today, can't tell if it's a genuine stone or not. Fake ones don't usually have this quality and color, but the dots are interesting. Any thoughts?

Took these photos in the sun. Malachite is my favorite, and i got it for a really good price, and it looks real enough that I won't be mad if it's fake. I'm just curious cause I can't really tell. It's a lot lighter than most of the stones I have too.

My rock and crystal obsessed child found this unusual teardrop shaped rock on the beach in Margate UK. He (6 yo) thinks it’s obsidian.

The black area is very smooth and hard. The pale portion feels sandy and isn’t as hard.

What does everyone else think?

Randomly remembered that my late dad gave it to me, like 15 years ago, and just recently it came up to my mind that I dont actually know what it is specifically 😅😅

Would take it to a jewlery store for them to look at it, but dont wanna end up looking stupid if its some poorly made fake haha

So if you could pinch in and take a look, it would be really appreciated 💖

Emerald? Jade? Something else maybe

REQUEST identifying various tumbled rocks Need help identifying a few rocks

These were all found by my grandpa on various local beaches in Humboldt County, Ca. He's also the one who tumbled them. I'm getting either green garnierite or moonstone as answers to the 1st. 2nd I'm assuming is some type of brecciated jasper. 4th one has a million different answers when I image search it. 5th one looks like polychrome jasper, or bloodstone, but obviously that's not geographically possible, so 🤷‍♀️ i have a ton of different jaspers, but I have like maybe 3 or 4 that look exactly like this one. 6th one (more purple than appears) gives me moonstone with an imagine search, until I turn it over and it's like a whole different stone apparently. I genuinely thought 7 was an agate, since it looks like a ton of other agates I have, but light doesn't pass through it at all. Image search answers for 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 were all "moonstone". Unsure of the others, but 12 and 13 (last 4 pics) look like jasp-agates to me. Oh yeah, these are all smooth btw (since they've been polished), so they all feel the same. Pls help a girl out lol

REQUEST Weird Carnotite?

Thumbnail

My camera and the light does the yellow no justice.

Found in Garfield county Colorado near East Rifle Creek area where two old uranium mines are. It was in a pull-out a couple miles south of the mines.

I've explored a 15 mile radius around the mines (never been able to explore the mines themselves because the owners do not allow it at all and there are cameras), and have never seen rocks like this in that area.

The yellow is powdery, but not easy to scratch off. From what I understand, carnotite can get in between the smallest spaces of sandstone and over take it so that it looks like sandstone? A couple areas of the yellow it appears like a crust, the rest is like it's sandstone. I believe the black bits are carboniferous trash.

I know a Geiger would tell me immediately, but until I get one, I was just seeing if anyone who has explored Colorado/Colorado Plateau uranium mines has seen anything like this before, or knows exactly what it is.

IDENTIFIED I bought this bracelet in gulf shores yesterday thinking maybe it was real turquoise, it is cold to the touch and it passed the melt test, but idk

It feels fairly soft and has a little weight to it, I know it's not plastic but I really wanted some real turquoise bc i know it's all drying up. The lines running through are kind of a gold color and some of them cut into whatever material this is. Inside the drill holes appears to mostly be white or gray, and i could convince myself that some of them are a lighter blue.

For context, these were all found by my grandpa at various local beaches in Humboldt County Ca. He tumbled and polished them. To me, they all appear pretty similar (especially the last 2), but only the 3rd one passes light through. Not sure if the first is just aventurine or what, but image search is extremely unhelpful, so any ideas?

REQUEST My mom gave me this bracelet and I'm curious about it

She didn't pay much, I'm almost certain it's stone/gem (doesn't get warm easily, unless it's glass??).

It doesn't get damaged by metal, and it's slightly translucent under a light (but barely, it's very opaque).

Usually bracelets like this are made by dyed agate, but I'm not sure it is.

Any thoughts?

Kenosha, WI. This rock is in our front flower bed. After 25 years and this subreddit I can ask if any one can tell me what type it is? Size is about 1.5 bowling ball.
