Without Paul, the spider-man comics have no punchline

214

u/Pyotr_WrangeI 14h ago

Well yeah, cause punchline is a dc character, Joker. Are you stupid?

86

u/sniply5 unfunny comment rat 16h ago

thats not true, theres spider-man getting screwed over as a punchline

17

u/raulpe 15h ago

Don't worry, in no time MJ (or whatever next romantic interest Peter has) will go "Peter, i would love to be with you, but im already with John" and/or die xd

7

u/SwoggitySwoogity 7h ago

Right now she's venom and repeatedly trying to get back with him, but he turns her down at every stop iirc.

31

u/Butterboot64 13h ago

Paul was a hero, I just couldn’t see it

2

u/GONKworshipper 3h ago

Spider-Man fans don't deserve to be happy. The more time you spend around them, the more you love Paul

2

u/Distinct_Engine_8855 10h ago

There's always that line where people say "if only he wasn't holding back that punch" or somewhere in that line

1

u/Novel-Carrot5325 9h ago

Relax, my grandpa told me they will revive Paul but this time he will anti hero called blue helmet and will have hate bone for spider because plot reasons

First mistake was naming him Paul

140

u/NoChampionship1167 16h ago

In defense of Pauls, the one in Invincible was cool.

62

u/DWglazer 14h ago

Dune Paul is kinda epic if you ignore the war crimes.

12

u/MohawkRex 13h ago

And he had a big worm so points for that.

27

What about Paul Blart?

7

u/Huckleberry-9477 15h ago

62

u/YourTrustySupporter JUSTICE FOR SUPPORT ROLE IN GAMING 16h ago

Third mistake is thinking of him when making a new character

77

u/Educational_Motor733 16h ago

Can confirm. I have never read a Spider-Man comic and I have heard of Paul. The hate I've seen is palpable

182

u/Additional-Proof556 16h ago

It's that beard. And the fact that my only exposure to MJ is through Rami movie, of course I hate her ass. And if Paul brings her happiness, he gotta go.

66

u/abdullahGR 16h ago

I only ever interacted with Spiderman through some of the animated shows and the movies, I don't think I ever saw Peter get a happy ending with MJ. There's always some bullshit

30

u/Th35h4d0w 10h ago

Thing about MJ Watson is for some reason, all the major adaptations that people talk about refuse to get her classic characterization right. Heck, besides Nick Spencer, so do the current comic writers.

You want to know why she’s supposed to be a beloved character? Check out the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. Her brief appearance at the end of Across the Spiderverse is also pretty good.

93

u/Different_Pin1531 I am really fucking stupid 16h ago

Can I get some context? The last comic I touched was when they were REALLY pushing Falcon America (I’m using that for Captain America the second)

147

u/sniply5 unfunny comment rat 16h ago

spidey and mj get stuck in an alternate universe where time is faster, mj falls for guy named paul who looks like this and then they got a few kids together. also he looks like this.

63

u/EmbarrassedPizza3952 16h ago

Is that all? I find it hard to believe that he gets this much hate just for doing that. He must be a terrible person personality wise, but since you didn't mention anything like that (I've never read any Spider Man comics), I'll assume that's not the case. I've also never seen MJ get hated on for this, which makes me think it wasn't something she did willingly. So if you could enlighten me on the reason behind it, that would make things easier to understand.

187

u/Kongkrokkstein69 14h ago edited 12h ago

The best way of explaining why spidey fans absolutely Despise Paul is to say that he basically is a physical representation of all of the bullshit and misery the spider-man writers have put Peter through post "One more day". Paul basically served as a big ol' middle finger to the fans and their hopes that Peter and MJ could ever get together again, or actually letting Peter make meanigfull and lasting progress as a person instead of simply being a shambling punching bag they can make suffer.

75

u/EmbarrassedPizza3952 12h ago

I don’t even need to hear anything else. Paul deserves all the hate he gets

92

u/arthcraft8 11h ago

beyond just Paul, Marvel's sheer unwillingness to make spider man progress is literally rewriting how time work

20 years ago, Peter Parker and eddie brock were students together in the same university, then eddie brock became venom, graduated, became a journalist under JJJ, went to Irak, married, became a father, lost his wife, fought a god (Knull) and then became the god of all symbitoes while his son, Eddie Junior, became the new venom

Meanwhile Peter is STILL a student

17

u/Pofwoffle 10h ago

Sounds to me more like the writers deserve all the hate he got, but I dunno maybe he kicked a puppy or something.

12

u/EmbarrassedPizza3952 10h ago

Hating paul = hating writers atp

-23

u/DeliciousGoose1002 13h ago

spidey fans or people who watch youtube shorts?

21

u/Connect-Initiative64 13h ago

I have literally never seen a single person defend Paul.

Not on Twitter.

Not on Reddit.

Not IRL.

Not amongst my friends.

Even other writers and artists dislike Paul and everything he stands for.

So yeah, Spidey Fans.

-10

u/DeliciousGoose1002 12h ago

There is a difference between defending and having a hateboner for someone

52

u/sniply5 unfunny comment rat 15h ago edited 15h ago

well a lot of it is just how egregious it all is, but yes i did forget to mention that the comics tried a ton to make him someone who to root for/his character randomly stealing mj out to be a good thing and also he abruptly split up peter and mj after they had another long lasting relationship for once.

10

u/EmbarrassedPizza3952 12h ago

I don’t think anyone hates Spider Man as much as his own writer does... I can understand why people hate Paul so much. I felt the same kind of hatred while reading Berserk because something similiar happens to Guts

2

u/Silent_Republic_2605 10h ago

Eclipse is not even close to what happened to Peter because Spidey writer will probably say it was a good thing.

1

u/EmbarrassedPizza3952 7h ago

I wasn’t talking about the Eclipse…

38

u/raulpe 15h ago

In summary, after more than a decade of "extreme Peter suffering p*rn", they made seemingly the possibility of he finally going back with MJ... And then nope, she is actually with Paul, a self insert of the author

28

u/MeiNeedsMoreBuffs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXUMPSjwpFI (trust me) 15h ago

It's more about what the character represents. The arc he's introduced is terribly written with all the heroes acting out of character just so Peter can go through some soap opera level melodrama with everyone hating him for no reason.

The Fantastic Four turned their backs on him because he stole a macguffin to save MJ because he didn't have time to explain, and somehow this is treated as some unforgivable crime instead of a thing superheroes do all the time. And when he gets desperate for help the only person he can turn to is begging for help from Norman Osborne

20

u/Western-Mechanic-822 15h ago edited 15h ago

For what i heard the reason people hate him is because he is a self insert of the author (idk how accurate is that) like he looks like the author and shit so it was kinda like the author put himself in the story to cuck peter and well, people were no kind to the author nor the story.

But also as people love to hate on things, so the sales of this story were pretty good to comic standar from what i recall.

14

u/EmbarrassedPizza3952 12h ago

This type of shit then

13

u/Western-Mechanic-822 12h ago

yeah pretty much. that guy is insane (rent a girlfriend author) i have never seen someone so lost on the sauce, like this guy legit has a whole family and is making up a life with a drawing.

21

u/SleepAllDay1234 11h ago

He is also responsible for his dimension's people being genocided. Partially, since it's his father's idea, but it is his reaction of basically showing ZERO remorse/accountability + MJ comparing his action/past as the same as Peter's responsibility in Uncle Ben's death that makes people, understandably, EXTREMELY PISSED.

All this, after Peter desperately tried to get back to that dimension to rescue MJ, to the point of breaking into F4's building to steal a portal device to save her and FIGHTING THE F4, instead of asking them for help about this, causing the F4 to "dislike" him and the F4 to burn bridges with him.

All this makes it clear to Spider-Man fans that the writers REALLY hate his guts even more than before, so they turn toward Paul as a "catalyst/source" of this whole mess.

2

u/KeeperOfWatersong 3h ago edited 3h ago

On one hand I get the idea that this was meant to hit extra hard because the F4 is like family to him but on the other...honestly the whole thing seems stupid and out of character for everyone involved?

3

u/Ayotha 15h ago

So, easy answer then, it's not peter. Next

6

u/Repocket_Pocket GO PEE TEAM!! (I am colorblind) 12h ago

And he is there for the one only purpose. He is like Thanos, but instead of killing half of the universe, he will cuck the entire universe.

19

u/SolomonDurand 8h ago

A synopsis of Paul's character and involvement will make any comic fan hate him for what he'd done to peter.

Also being some editors self insert will make anyone hate that character too

27

u/Zipp_Linemann 16h ago

I remember someone made an edit of Paul's gravestone to say Herman Schultz (The Shocker) instead because his death allowed for Paul's. I wish I had that image.

29

u/GreedyExamination704 8h ago

I just find it pointless to keep on rooting for MJ and Peter to get back together. It’s been over 20 years and Marvel ain’t doing jack shit. Struggling Peter Parker is the status quo and we must not break it. I wouldn’t disagree, his struggles are what makes him relatable and is apart of his character, but it’s stupid just to be stuck in a permanent “will they, won’t they” cycle instead of just moving on and having Peter hook up with Felicia or a new character.

I get why fans are pissed, but I also find the fight for Peter and MJ pointless especially at this time.

8

u/ConnorOfAstora 7h ago

Expecting 616 Marvel to be anything but abysmal dogshit is the definition of naivete, this goes triple for Spider-Man and X-Men.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Lab2447 7h ago

Expecting 616 Marvel to be anything but abysmal dogshit is the definition of naivete, this goes triple for Spider-Man and X-Men.

Sadly that is the life of a marvel fanboy.

3

u/ConnorOfAstora 6h ago

It's why I've switched sides, DC are killing it right now especially with the Absolute Universe.

Marvel are just like "Here's another six runs based on X-Men characters, hopefully one of them sticks"

6

u/Puzzleheaded-Lab2447 6h ago

Who said marvel's biggest competition is DC, it's actually themselves.

2

u/ConnorOfAstora 6h ago

Never have truer words been spoken.

There's also plenty more than just Marvel and DC, Image Comics are still going strong and Dynamite has been doing well with all kinds of comics like Supernatural, Ben 10, Disney and many more.

3

u/Puzzleheaded-Lab2447 6h ago

Ok but the ben 10 new comics are straight up mid.

1

u/ConnorOfAstora 6h ago

I'm enjoying them enough so far, they're not excellent but they're better than nothing and could be a lot worse.

I'm hoping it's just a slow start like Absolute Green Lantern and Absolute Flash were.

1

u/DreadDiana 1h ago

I dunno, I liked stuff like Unbelievable Gwenpool, Immortal Hulk, The Mighty Thor (the one where Gorr showed up), and King Thor. There's some good stuff in there.

1

u/ConnorOfAstora 1h ago

The God Butcher Saga was GOATed

Shame about the movie adaptation...

1

u/DreadDiana 37m ago

I was already not a fan of Love & Thunder, but it was all the worse cause it was the only MCU movie I'd watched which covered an arc I'd read before.

1

u/Gabriel-Klos-McroBB 4m ago

Yeah, Gwenpool's peak. (I want more.)

1

u/DreadDiana 2m ago

There's some other Gwenpool content, like Gwenpool Strikes Back and her time on the West Coast Avengers, but at the end of the day only her original run is considered and unqualified banger.

32

u/Professor-Xivass 11h ago

Dude, Paul literally STOPPED me from reading Spder-Man comics when I first thought about reading them for the first time years ago(grew up with the movies and cartoons)

11

u/Lewa358 10h ago

Just read Ultimate Spider-Man or the stuff Stan Lee actually wrote

2

u/Professor-Xivass 10h ago

The only comic I’ve actually read was the original Miles Morales comics I found in the library years before the Spider-Verse movies and technically not read but watched a motion comic adaptation of Leo’s Tailoring (still a personal favourite)

2

u/EddieVanzetti 10h ago

There are a ton of great storylines to read. Off the top of my head there's Kraven's Last Hunt, Superior Spider-Man (which does require you to realize everyone but Spidey is holding an idiot ball) which has actually had some hold in canon last time I heard a few years ago, and Life Story (a bunch of shorter vignettes instead of full issues designed to capture the "feel" of each decade Spider-Man has been in since the 60s). And thats just off the top of my head.

5

u/Wows_Nightly_News 7h ago

Paul saved you

1

u/Professor-Xivass 7h ago

2

u/Human-Boob 9h ago

I have a huge comic book collection and zero Spider-Man. I love the character, always have. But I try to find a comic that seems interesting and all I can see in the comic stores and online are just…boring.

10

u/PuffcornSucks 9h ago

Who’s Paul

1

u/ConnorOfAstora 6h ago

Nature is healing, soon he'll just be an uncomfortable footnote that most people don't know about and try to ignore like Arisia from Green Lantern.

To actually answer your question there was a random time skip where Peter was trying to save MJ but she ended up meeting and marrying this guy called Paul and they adopted kids together and it was a whole thing where he was a bit of a dick to Peter and even if he wasn't he randomly showed up right as it looked like they were finally gonna get back together.

Eventually they finally realised that nobody liked Paul and when he and MJ broke up they were bathed in light making it look like it was ordained by God himself.

8

u/iwantdatpuss 13h ago

Well, cucking the main character is a pretty dang good start.

6

u/Animanga-Fan-7435 13h ago edited 10h ago

I hate to be one of those “um actually” jackasses but cucking only occurs if the person getting cucked is currently in a relationship with the one cucking them and Peter and MJ were broke up therefore it doesn’t qualify.

EDIT:Cucking is just cheating but the victim is okay with it.
