if the mod does as advertised and is thoroughly tested

who gives a shit if it was made by a 12 year old kid, an indian web dev or ai ?

Exactly my position. I care about the result. Who tf cares otherwise?

ipad kids over at some antiai subreddit very much care about that, and really want you to care about it too. Or else you're a very bad person by their playbook :(

You think people who outsource executing their surface-level vision to a chatbot will have the resources or even the integrity to thoroughly test their product?

I'm not saying that legit programmers don't or shouldn't utilize AI tools. Ideas however are cheap and don't require expertise and now anyone who has half an idea can ship a product with little effort, which effort is reflected in the result.

All spaces are saturated with these thoughtless, directionless, often messy or straight up nonsensical, nonfunctional 'products'. I think people are rightfully upset about this.

The problem is that vibecoded mods are rarely thoroughly tested.

Mods in general are rarely thoroughly tested before release

Vibecoded even less so.

Making mods is supposed to be adding something to your game. If you can’t be arsed doing it yourself then why even bother? Why even bother playing the game? “Chatgpt fuck my wife for me” levels of shit

Because they want something added to their game. People aren’t out here making mods (either by their own hands or by LLM) for the sake of it, they’re doing it because they want something in the game that doesn’t exist yet.

Well, there are probably some people out there that make mods for the sake of making mods, but the vast majority of modding is done with a specific goal in mind.

Ideally, the mod you want already exists, and you just download it. If it doesn’t exist, you either just live with it not existing, or make it yourself. In order to make it yourself, you need a certain degree of programming knowledge as an absolute minimum. That’s not something most people have. So you can either not make it, learn to code, or (nowadays at least) try to get an AI to do it. Learning to code takes a lot of time, effort, and possibly money.

Personally, there are a lot of mods I’d like to make. A lot of things I’d like added to my games. I don’t know how to code though, so they just stay in my head. I’ve tried to learn, and I have learned some, but not enough to actually make anything that I want. And I don’t use AI to do it, because I don’t trust it to make anything good, and even if it did, I hate the idea of producing some sort of black box program that I don’t understand. How would I know if/how it could be improved, or fix any bugs?

That being said, the difference between someone like me who doesn’t make mods because I don’t know how and someone who gets an LLM to make them a mod is that the vibe-coder actually has something to show for it.

Because they want the result? Is that so hard to believe? I want awesome fucking stuff in my game. If Ai can do it well, then we're done!
