Spanish downhill skateboarder Diego Poncelet set a new world speed record for standing skateboarding, reaching a staggering 94.34mph down a closed section of a road in Canada.

Maybe the car doesn’t have to be directly behind them in case they fall?

It's creating aspiration, even with an object behind. It's like when cyclists do drafting, it's not only the bikes in front that matters but also the ones in the back. So he couldn't reach this speed without the car behind him.

I think if he falls he’s just done for anyway. At those speeds, I’d image whatever hits first is getting ripped off or just grated down to nothing.

If he falls the car will stop much faster than he will
He's not stopping for a long time at that speed

Nah, I’m sure he had some buffer on his clothes to help. Not saying it wouldn’t fuck him up but getting run over by a car will for sure end him.

“I was going 94.34mph on my skateboard in the fast lane and still there’s some Porsche right up my arse flashing me to move out the way….”

Standing on a tiny board going almost 95 mph is a whole different level of crazy.

Good thing he doesn't have boobs. Or it will slow him down

Nah they're usually aerodynamic and add mass to this gravity powered event

I mean he's in the drag of the car

Does that make it less impressive to go 90 mph on a skateboard?

My grandpa had to go 90 mph on his skateboard, uphill, in the snow to get to school every winter.

Im L4-5 fused from a bad deadlift at the gym. If he has an accident I dread to think what will happen.

94 mph standing on a skateboard is genuinely nuts and I cant stop thinking about one tiny pebble ruining the whole day. At that speed the chase car staying back makes sense too cause you dont want another vehicle anywhere near the crash zone. Dude is clearly wired different and way braver than me. I wont even go 94 in a car without checking my seatbelt twice.

Seems like a drone following him would have worked just as well with the added benefit he wouldn't be run over if he wiped out.

It's impressive (and to me terrifying), but dude is 100% benefitting from the bow wave in the air from the car.
I would not certify this as a record. From a physics standpoint there is no way in hell that car isn't significantly helping him.
ETA: ever seen one of those cool videos of a bird flying or gliding alongside a speedboat faster than it should be able to? Same concept. Just like the bird is ultimately benefitting from the boat's passage through the air, so is this guy. The only way he couldn't be is if the car was supersonic. Any subsonic object is pushing an area of high pressure ahead of itself, and this guy is right smack in the middle of that. Again, it's impressive as heck, but it's also 100% guaranteed he wouldn't be going as fast without a 3000 lb 200 horsepower object directly behind him bulling through the air and effectively pushing him a little.

Things like that are mentioned in the record. For example, there are different top speed records with a bicycle:
- Fastest downhill bicycle
- Fastest towed bicycle
- Fastest unpaced (human powered alone) bicycle
- ...
I wouldn't know how they'd actually call this skateboarding record. But it surely won't be categorized as unpaced.
The accomplishment here is not just reaching that speed and it isn't the most impressive part either. The biggest accomplishment here is the rider being able to keep his balance at that speed.

You have to be a special kind of psycho to attempt something like this.
