Economic collapse in Afghanistan resulting in rising reported cases of child-marriages

âEconomic collapseâ doesnât force you to sell children. Why are we putting on kid gloves when talking about this shit? Itâs barbarism. Revolting cultural practices that the civilized world has done away with
28
u/Citaku357 5h ago
Am not a father but if I had kids, I would rather sell myself than my kids
6
u/Mdnghtmnlght 4h ago
I'd rather feed that old guy's beard to him and take his shit than let him do what he's going to do to that child.
3
u/ScallionEconomy2827 4h ago
Nobody's buying older men though, or their services as mentioned in the video, so then what? keep in mind theres other children to feed too. i dont have a good solution, just saying, selling yourself is a fantasy

There are plenty of poor countries that don't normalize child marriages. Unfortunately, they need to want the change, and under the Taliban, that's definitely not going to happen.

I would like to just point out two instances from my head.
People were selling their children during the great depression.
People were selling their children during holodomor.
I guess economic collapse does make people sell their children

Being a pedo is not illegal there. He thinks he only doing what he's allowed by law and their religion to do.
I believe this is an old case. The Taliban intervened and brought her back, upheld the sale and said send her back when she's nine.

The crocodile tears some people are trying to spin as desperation or remorse is infuriating as well. These so called fathers don't give a shit, they just want their next fix at the cost of what they consider a useless piece of property they will only feed and house as an investment.
27
u/NailSubstantial2772 5h ago
There's one thing I find particularly telling...
People go on and on about poverty, whether the parents or the religion are to blame, what the poor children have done to deserve this, and so on and so forth.
But there's ONE thing that NEVER seems to come up in these debates: Who is buying these girls? Why does nobody ever talk about these oh-so-respectable "customers"?
I mean, in the video we see a NINE-YEAR-OLD(!) GIRL who looks even younger because of malnutrition, putting on lipstick! What kind of man in his right mind BUYS a little girl like that?! As if she were a used car or a coffee machine?!
The media constantly feature interviews with desperate fathers claiming they had no other choice, but HELLO?!
Where the hell is all this enormous demand coming from?! And if everyone is supposedly so desperately poor, where are all these customers with money to spare coming from?!
10
u/PursuitOfThis 4h ago edited 4h ago
Polygamy is permitted in Afghanistan. No doubt some of these old men are just straight pedos and are using the child marriage loophole to legalize abuse that would be illegal everywhere else. But I imagine what's really happening is that these families are selling their children into slavery as third and fourth "wives" to do house work. Selling children to wealthier families where they will have a chance of being fed, clothed, and housed with the understanding that they'll be put to work as second class members of the household is a thing still in a lot of places--it happens here in the states when families send their children to live with distant relatives, or outright being sold like during the Great Depression. Still terrible, but I like to think the world hasn't turned a blind eye to blantant sexual abuse of minors.
→ More replies (1)7
u/hologram137 3h ago
That is incredibly naive. These are not men with wives. Those children ARE the wives
→ More replies (18)5
u/anotherthrow25 4h ago
A really good point and I agree. The parents shouldn't be off the hook. They decided to have kids that they couldn't take care off and that poor girl has to suffer.
But the people buying these young girls are disgusting. The guy at his age marrying a 9 Yr old...I wonder where he got that idea.
20
u/Humble-Can5318 5h ago
This hurts to watch.
Irony is, if some third nation were to come and remove the Taliban and try changing this, the father would be out there fighting with Taliban. And if he did have enough money he would not be against this himself.

There's an amazing song from the 2000s called "what would you do" it goes 'what would you do if your son was at home cryin all alone on the bedroom floor and he's hungry and the only way to feed him is to sleep with a man for a little bit of money". This song shamed the woman for sleeping with guys to support her son.. I think most mothers would choose that over what they're doing in afghanistan, it's incomprehensible!

u/Braysl-March 5h ago
Many women sell themselves to keep their families fed. Some are forced into it by their partners. I don't think Afghan women have the choice to sell themselves for their kids because they don't have a lot of self agency.

Do you know anything about the history of Afghanistan? Afghanistan had total gender equality, banned forced marriages, had a minimum age for marriage, and mandated that education and literacy be provided to all girls in addition to boys.
Then the US directly funneled billions and billions of dollars into the Mujahideen, a religious extremist far-right authoritarian group that would fight back against Russia. Once the Mujahideen won, thatâs when it became an Islamic Republic where shit like this happens.
In other words: THE US INTENTIONALLY MADE AFGHANISTAN THIS WAY and destroyed decades of progress. They are still fucked up to this day because of our meddling.
7
u/SoonerEsq 5h ago edited 4h ago
I don't agree with the racists in here either, but Russia began influence campaigns before the US became involved and then Russia invaded destroying the infrastructure of the country and making it the most mined country in the worldÂ
Do you know the biggest complaint Afghans had about that period and after? It's that the US abandoned them after Russia left. They wanted our support against Russia and they wanted us to help them after.Â
And did you know that the Afghans were spilt pretty evenly about whether they wanted the US to stay in 2021? And that's with women being oppressed in polls.Â
Women in Afghanistan were going to school and had growing rights for the 20 years the US was there. It's not the United States' fault that religious extremists have control of Afghanistan. The US trained the Afghans for two decades and they decided to hand the country back to religious extremists with almost no resistance after the withdrawal.

Apparently we can do stuff, so I am donating to one of the following foundations;
- The Citizens Foundation (TCF)
- The Strategy: Builds all-girls schools with female-only staff to keep girls in education, which is the most effective systemic deterrent against early marriage in rural Pakistan.
- EU Donation Ease: You can donate seamlessly through their dedicated European hubs, such as TCF Italy or TCF UK, allowing for direct SEPA bank transfers, credit cards, or PayPal.
- Too Young to Wed (TYTW)
- The Strategy: An international powerhouse focusing strictly on ending child marriage through emergency girls' scholarships, legal aid, and local community sensitization campaigns.
- EU Donation Ease: Highly endorsed on global giving subreddits like r/EffectiveAltruism. They accept all major international credit cards and cross-border digital payments online.
- Bedari
- The Strategy: A trusted, on-the-ground Pakistani NGO that works directly with community elders to legally block child marriages and rescue young girls from forced unions.
- EU Donation Ease: Recommended by r/pakistan for direct impact. While they require direct international bank transfers (IBAN/SWIFT), you can easily fund them from Europe using low-fee transfer apps like Wise.

Putting aside all the left wing/right wing political nonsense...
The west spent 20 years training and equipping the Afghan army to be able to defeat the Taliban.
Unfortunately, the Afghan army dropped their weapons and ran away.
This is what happens when there are no men brave enough to stand up and fight for Western civilization. Their country has been retaken by Islamic extremists. This leads to poverty and more horrors like we see in this video.
EDIT: I'm sure there were brave men in the Afghan army but not enough and nobody capable of providing leadership. At some point the people have to take responsibility for their own country.

What I find surprising is that anyone was surprised. It's what I expected from the minute we occupied the place. The history of Afghanistan is pretty clear. I remember from relatively early on in Obama's tenure, the US tried to get Karzai to sign up for certain anti corruption measures and he refused - I think bc it would have hurt him and his family.
And that was the exit ramp Obama should have taken. "Not gonna ask American kids to die for a corrupt regime." Etc. Instead we kept supporting Karzai's corrupt ass. No... Stupid.
Nation building is incredibly futile and stupid. The Bush administration genuinely believed Iraq would be like post WWII Germany. Duh, no. Germany was already a nation that simply needed a reset. Iraq, Afghanistan - countries but not nations (Iraq, arguably, and likely an oversimplification, three nations - Sunni, Shia, Kurd. Afghanistan, more complicated still).

Stupid and woefully short on context and facts. The Afghan militaryâs 2021 collapse wasn't simply a case of soldiers being âcowardsâ: it reflected deep, endemic corruption, weak political legitimacy, U.S-built dependence on U.S. airpower and contractors, supply and pay failures, and the nearly instant unraveling of command after the U.S. withdrawal and Taliban negotiations without the Afghan government. It's really misleading to frame the war as Afghans refusing to âfight for Western civilization,â since Afghan forces suffered tens of thousands of combat deaths over two decades while fighting primarily for their own government and communities, not for a Western ideological project. I was there as an advisor. Talk all the ignorant shit you want though.

US states failed to ban child marriages multiple timesÂ
Notably this oneÂ
"I agree that protecting the well-being, dignity, and freedom of minors is vital, but the severe bar this bill creates is not necessary to address the concerns voiced by the billâs proponents and does not comport with the sensibilities and, in some cases, the religious customs, of the people of this State,â Christie said in his veto message.
