FOOTBALL Genuine question: What do you think was the playcall on the original 2 point conversation attempt with 8 o-lineman and 3 TEs?

Before the GW QB draw, Stein had 8 o-lineman and 3 TEs on the field. What do you think his plan was?

To create a look for the defense that was starkly different than the play they ran. I don't think they ever intended to snap a ball with that formation. Showed it before the TD and LSU stuffed it, showed it again and they bit. Panicked when Minchey came out and spread it wide, left the middle wide open. Kiffen was the Fiddle. Stein was the Fiddler.

This. In fact I almost think the primary objective was to force LSU to burn their lone timeout. Trying to draw them offsides was a potential bonus. Why not try to make a three yard try a yard and a half try knowing they had a timeout of their own.

Stein planned on the play they ran from the start. He wanted to make sure when they spread them out with the personnel grouping they locked in that LSU could not get out of it.

Stein said he wanted to try and get the defense to jump so that would get the ball at 1.5 yard line instead of the 3. No plan other than to draw the defense offsides.

That’s what he said to the media

Most of it was to do exactly what it did. Draw the TO or at least get a jump to put them on the 1.5 yard line.

It drew the TO.

So that way when Minchey motioned the Trio out (under 15 sec on playclock so defense audio turns off) and left the middle open, then there was no way for LSU to counter quickly with a TO.

To force Lane to use his last TO, right? Didn't he use it there?

Then when they came out w/ the QB and shifted formation, he just had to stand there and watch.

Not gonna lie, though, the second time they did it, I thought they might actually snap it to the TE and I was losing my mind.

I was thinking this is either gonna be the most genius play I’ve ever seen or it’s gonna compete with Pete Carroll’s dumb call in the Super Bowl

When Rodriguez moved up under center I was yelling at my family "ARE WE GOING TO SNAP IT TO THE TIGHT END????"

Last week they went with a pass, so they came out in a running formation to catch LSU off guard a little and made Lane burn the timeout to make sure they had the right defense.

Then they came out in it again and LSU probably thought “okay we got a good run defense called” and then Stein called his timeout, came out in another run look, then Minchey spread his TEs and WRs all out and opened up the middle of the field perfectly.

Stein stuffed Lane in a locker.

Lane was out coached big time. It was amazing to watch.

It was nonsense, they were never going to run that play. They successfully threw LSU for a loop

Stein massively outcoached Kiffin in those last couple plays, it was beautiful

We were never gonna snap it in the "Big Willie" formation. Stein was trying to force lane to burn a timeout and it worked like a charm.

The play call was to try and draw them offsides.. the perverbial chess match between coaches if you will. Only wanted to make LSU use their timeout before the actual formation was used so they couldn't adjust.

*proverbial

The 8/3 formation is one we ran earlier on the drive and have run a lot this year for short yardage situations, but it's a 1-2 yard play not a 3 yard play. We were never going to snap that.

But the brilliance of making Kiffin blink first and call his timeout and then come out in the exact same formation before calling our timeout and changing the play when it was too late for LSU to give the defense new instructions is a masterclass in college football strategy

The entire two-point sequence was a brilliant bit of double misdirection. Coming out in the WillieCat from the three yard line forced Kiffin to call timeout because they didn’t have the right defense. Then sending out the WillieCat again, calling timeout, and sending Minchey in with a bunched formation made it seem obvious that we were looking to sell the inside run but pass or run outside. When the three bunched receivers predictably split outside LSU panicked and bit hard to the outside which left the middle wide open, and LSU didn’t have a timeout left. LSU only had four interior defenders left at that point, and UK’s offensive lineman were able to double the inside guys to create an enormous hole so Minchey could walk in…to the exact spot where we originally set up to go.

If they would have jumped I think we snap it and attempt the power run off tackle. If they didn’t jump they burn their timeout to adjust.

I listened to the Tom and Jeff version that O___ball___0 put up and Jeff mentioned a pop pass to Henry Boyer out of that formation.

2

u/NonAthlete6232 5d ago

If they absolutely had to run that formation this of what i looked for. To either Boyer or Skinner on either side of line whichever has open space

1

u/MackewG33 5d ago

God I wish we had Boyer another year

1

u/DirtyOught 5d ago

this is the answer. it was a pop pass.

but kiffin called a TO, so they abandoned it assuming kiffin told them to watch for it, they switched strategy to try and get them to jump for closer shot, but didn't work so they TO'd and then called the quick pass/draw option

He was trying to bait the timeout out and he did. They line up in it again to reaffirm to the defense they were running it then called their own timeout and came out on empty set and both linebackers were confused on what to do.

There was no qb draw planned - 3 just called his own number

3

u/Planetofthemoochers 5d ago

It sure looked like a planned QB draw considering they sent three receivers wide who then all blocked into the end zone. The whole sequence including the WillieCat was double misdirection, it got LSU thinking middle (LSU TO), middle (UK TO), middle (initial bunched formation with Minchey), and then overreacting wide when the three receivers split out wide which left the middle wide open for Minchey.

Coach says otherwise

2

u/Lexie60 5d ago

Coach may have said that to preseve some suspense, and the real play for the future.

2

u/Obi1Kentucky 5d ago

To mess with Kiffin and to get him to waste his last timeout

2

u/AngryTurtleGaming 5d ago

I really think he did that to get Kiffen to burn his timeout. I don’t think we were going to snap the ball either time.
