Roberta’s is closing…
Check this bitchy sign out

u/RustnKrust 21h ago
What’s bitchy about the signs? They express no emotion whatsoever, just boilerplate signage. If you mean it’s bitchy to post the sign about how much they owe because it’s a public place for all to see, I think that’s a requirement for the landlord when they are going through the eviction process rather then a “let’s shame them in the eyes of the public for NOT paying their bills” lol

The rents are too damn high
17
u/wulfcasting 22h ago
Kind of shocked the rent was only 13k…

u/ModernNero 3h ago
A tiny bodega that doesn’t get much foot traffic told me their rent is close to 8k in park slope so yeah, Roberta’s had it pretty good for being that size/location

This is what happens when you don't pay rent.
What gets me is how much it is.

u/theegiftogab 21h ago
A lot of it had to do with management. They went through like 10 different GMs at that location within two years. The final nail in the coffin was when they stopped doing catering out of that location which was a big percentage of their sales. Idk the og bushwick location was always the better spot in my opinion.

u/Bootes 1d ago
How big was this space? I looked at retail space in a building like this, but nowhere near as high trafficked area and they wanted similar rents.
5
u/Signal_Drop_9641 21h ago
the place was always closed too early. Every time i got there they said 'sry kitchen closed'. I noticed so many spots whose business hours close so early now and they wonder why they have no business. Well, if ur never open for business what do you expect... what happened to the city that never sleeps!

Damn remember when Roberta’s was cool. They could probably pay rent back then

If not for gentrification, 99% of you would have never stepped foot in bushwick, this used to be no go territory

I remember no one wanting to get off the L past Metropolitan

I used to get some shade from when I lived off the J train at myrtle broadway like 18 years ago, by some dude who fixed mopeds for a living. Asking me where i lived, me telling him, then him being like, “oh, so you like live in Canarsie?” And would then throw that into casual conversations afterwards as some sort of jab, as if I cared, or should care.
Like dude, I’m poor, but you choose to live in Greenpoint, next to a legit superfund site… so ‘hip’, now get off my ass.

u/No-Pineapple-1721 3h ago
I lived off the Kosciusko stop in 2002, my coworker who was born and raised in Williamsburg was so scared for me. Ha Ha. I loved that apartment though.

u/Swimming-Tip-2066 23h ago
You have to sell 20-30 pies a day just to cover that rent. Seems like a risky endeavor

u/ianmac47 18h ago
Recession indicator.
Also it will be fool's errand to pay $15,000 a month in that space before the new towers are finished, and maybe even after.
6
u/LouisSeize 17h ago
This isn’t a sign, but a legal notice. What’s “bitchy” about Two Trees demanding the rent Roberta’s agreed to pay?
3
u/TapResponsible4364 15h ago
I'm confused - their rent is only 13k a month for that location ? It's huge probably 3-4k so feet... a one bedroom apartment in that same building is 600 sq feet and costs like 6500 a month. I would think the Roberta's would be at least 30-40k a month unless they got some discount promo deal for the first few years . I know little about real estate so curious what everyone else thinks

Hot take: the pizza is not that good. And it is pretty expensive for pizza.
Pizza should not be some restaurant style food. Get me a decent nyc slice for a few bucks. Not some doughy small ass Roberta's pie for $27
26
u/ITS_MY_PENIS_8eeeD 22h ago
disagree. i liked their bee sting pizza.
-7
u/Organic-Hovercraft-3 22h ago
Ehh. It's just a hot honey pizza. Was not very special.
4
u/whmm22 21h ago
Ehhh Or maybe Its a personal preference, and you dont need to ruin someone's happiness with your opinion that you could easily keep to yourself.

u/grotskyaf 18h ago
Lmao “ruin someone’s happiness” because he didn’t like the hot honey pizza is crazy work

Comments like this are fucking hilarious. What the fuck do you think people are here for? Everyone on Reddit is talking about their opinion. One person says they like something and someone else says it’s not that great. It’s not a personal attack.

u/Extension-Can5718 23h ago
Why not we have both lol that way if we feel like a an NYC slice we have it, if we feel like a sit down for a wood-fired we also have it 🧠

-3
u/Organic-Hovercraft-3 22h ago
You could have both. But imo Roberta's is not very good. Try Razza for a good date night pie. NYT said best in NYC !

The person you’re replying to has just been having a conversation and sharing opinions. You are now actually attacking them. You’re the only one here that’s being a dick.

And what do you mean, “see”? Do you think that you’re replying to someone in this thread that shared an opinion on anything? Because I haven’t. Your point is ridiculous. I can’t even imagine how someone like you would face actual adversity. Gen Z much?

u/herladyshipssoap 21h ago
They published some recipes in NYT cooking and I enjoy making their pizzas at home.
2
u/Similar-Interaction5 22h ago
Agreed. Way overrated and over priced. If I go for any reason I just get the pasta.
1
u/devoida 23h ago
I agree. I went there and couldn't figure out what the hoopla was about. Same with Scarrs. But their caesar salad was really tasty.
1
u/Detective_NYC 2h ago
Scarrs went waaay downhill. Got a slice there last week; it had holes in it, with the cheese melting through. They replaced it with a burnt slice, and the guy wiped sweat from his forehead and grabbed my slice by the hand. Also the lines were gone the place was totally empty.

u/Acceptable-Ratio-219 1d ago
I used to live across the street decades ago. The idea of the rent being this high now is so wild.
10
u/sbelleza 1d ago
You used to live at domino park?
13
u/Acceptable-Ratio-219 1d ago edited 22h ago
Oh did not realize this was the domino park location, as the post just says Roberta's. I assumed it was referring to the original Bushwick location. I apologize for not reading the fine print of an eviction notice.
8
u/Laxziy 1d ago
Domino park didn’t exist even a decade ago

I was born and raised in Williamsburg on South 3rd st . Kent Avenue was industrial blight! Old factories , stripped abandoned cars. Prostitution !And this was how Kent was back in the day! However, after 50 years away from Willy B. I decided to purchase one of these condos not Domino, even nicer. I guess Willy B is in my soul.

u/Acesandink666 1d ago
Lol , they make enough on a Saturday to pay that.

Gentrification having us see so many things close on metropolitan, Milk bar closed recently too, honestly let’s pray Golden Dragon doesn’t close
28
u/RecycledAccountName 1d ago
I don’t think gentrification is even the right word for what is happening at this point.
Google says the word is hypergentrification. End stage gentrification also appears very appropriate.
12
u/Sherbert-Particular 22h ago
My fucking dentist moved because Rolex bought the entire building he was in and raised rent from $15,000 to $38,000.

4
2
u/Yonigajt 21h ago
Look at the rents
7
u/GirlsWasGoodNona 21h ago
It’s that milk bar opening in the area was the gentrification in the first instance. What’s been happening is beyond that

u/HangryWormPrince 20h ago
??? If we are going to talk businesses and gentrification, isn't Roberta's the face of gentrification?
Same goes for milk bar. The hipsters came first, then these businesses opened.
2
u/chinga_tu_barra 10h ago
roberta’s literally started it all. then more and more chefs + restaurants came. then so too did the rents. pot kettle black.
6
u/Ok-Report-126 21h ago
lol. You don’t know what gentrification is. Also, milk bar is still open. There are a million American Chinese places in New York that you can eat at if golden dragon ever closes. In the meantime, you could try some actual Chinese food. There are a few good spots in the neighborhood.

u/Remarkable-Peak-420 1d ago edited 16h ago
Wait Milk Bar closed? Damn.
Edit: it reopens every day apparently, nice

u/emFire_ 21h ago
This is a stupid comment. If it weren’t for gentrification you wouldn’t even have nice places like these opening in the first place
4
u/brotried2blockme 18h ago
Shit is an ouroboros when it shouldn't be. Place is cheap, people come in and take advantage of the cheapness to open up creative venues and establishments, place gets expensive as a result, then places that made it cool in the first place are forced to close and only well capitalized chains open up shop. Fuck that. Would be great to keep things at the "cool stuff and affordable" stage but that doesn't seem to exist in this country. They got it in Tokyo and a lot of European cities, even London has it a lot more than NYC, but nope America can't have that, greed has to take in and self destruct every single little fucking thing. There's places in Bushwick with nothing there but shuddered shops but the rents are priced in to reflect gentrification that doesn't even exist. Gentrification is such a shit show it prices out shit before it even gentrifies, just the anticipation of it is enough even if it doesn't come.
2
u/Ok-Report-126 21h ago
You’re talking about a pizza place that sells like $30 pizzas. This isn’t a dollar slice shop going out of business.
1
u/emFire_ 20h ago
So?
4
u/Ok-Report-126 20h ago
🤦♂️
1
u/emFire_ 20h ago
What’s your point? You either don’t go to these places because they’re expensive and therefore you don’t complain if they go out of business. Or you enjoy the benefit of these places opening and then cry when they close. Seems more like the latter, that’s why the gentrification argument is dumb
3
u/Rekj16 20h ago
Yeah, gentrification has really saved us all /s
-1
u/emFire_ 20h ago
Ok let’s never gentrify and keep all neighborhoods poor. You can’t fight supply and demand

What kind of discriminatory comment is that? Some of those neighborhoods weren’t poor before. They were middle class neighborhoods.Ignorant comment 👎🚫

LOL milk bar IS the gentrification. And so is this specific Roberta’s. Yall need to go back to Ohio 😂

Am I the only one here that didn't vehemently hate Roberta's? 😂
I def agree their stuff was just decent, but it was nice to get a slice or two right after strolling through Domino's boardwalk and lounging on the turf.
