Volunteer Opportunity: Help VCE Scientists study fall birds!

Hi r/williamsburgva,
I'm a conservation scientist at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies, where I study migratory birds, including the rare Bicknell's Thrush. Our recent research has found that the mid-Atlantic region is an important area for fall migratory stopover, with nearly all of our tracked birds spending extensive time here before continuing south.

Last year, we determined that autonomous recording units (ARUs) can be used successfully to detect Bicknell's Thrush and Gray-cheeked Thrush during stopover. These are devices that record bird sound which we then analyze with machine learning to determine which species are in the area. We recently received funding to increase the number of ARUs surveying for these species in forests across the region, and this year we'd also like to pilot recruiting volunteers to deploy devices on private land as well.

The Eastern Shore of VA turns out to be a particularly important area for this special species, and we'd love to recruit more volunteers from this area to help us in our research. No bird knowledge required! If you have a property on the eastern shore and you're interested in learning more about what species of birds call it home, we'd love for you to volunteer.

If you're interested in deploying a device from late sept-late october, or would like to learn more about the project, please fill out this form at this link: https://forms.gle/aznZ26hS3GkLnZ9r7

Thanks for considering!

Anyone know of any special events happening in Yorktown today? Friday was a concert, yesterday was the Hamilton! movie showing (which I wanted to go to but didn't as it was too cold and too wet for me and my family). Monday is the parade. I can't find any listings for today, though....

Nice places for a small outdoor wedding?

My fiancee (50) and I (54) are taking a trip with her family to Williamsburg in November, and we're considering having a small, semi-spontaneous surprise wedding ceremony there. We'd prefer some places outside with a nice view, maybe a park with an arbor or gazebo, something along those lines. Any ideas you all would be willing to share? Or are we barking up the wrong tree?

Presidents Heads museum, housing proposal pulled by developers

Post image
23 Upvotes

Developers withdrew their rezoning application for the Bluffs at Kiskiack, a proposed James City County development that included more than 700 homes, commercial space and an open-air museum featuring 42 presidential busts.

The withdrawal came ahead of a scheduled Board of Supervisors meeting after officials signaled they would not approve an additional deferral request from the developers.

The project faced strong opposition from rural Croaker residents, who raised concerns about traffic, changes to the community character and the success of a president busts museum.

Rec Center vs YMCA

Hello! I’m deciding between a membership at the Wburg Rec Center and the YMCA and was looking for insight on the quality of workout equipment, classes, busyness (in the afternoons), and pickup basketball between the two options.

If anyone a recommendation one way or the other, I’d love to hear it. Thanks.

Sheetz, not Wawa!

From the York Co Planning Commission Meeting Agenda, 10/14 at 7pm.  Meeting located at 301 Main St, Yorktown.  The site proposed is the large unoccupied hotel next to Cracker Barrel.

On the one hand, the traffic entering and exiting the site will be nuts. On the other, does Sheetz have good sandwiches?

Williamsburg is still having trouble improving cell service

Post image

Cell phone service across Williamsburg remains inadequate, but local officials are struggling to persuade major carriers to build the necessary infrastructure to improve coverage.

According to a city report presented by Chief Information Officer Mark Barham, dense tree canopy, historic building materials, architectural design restrictions and high tourism volume contribute to widespread reception issues.

While T-Mobile provides 5G coverage across the entire locality, AT&T and Verizon reach less than half of the city with 5G signals.

Elementary school recommendations

We’re a military family expecting to move in the next few months down to the area to work at Newport News Shipyard. I’ve heard that the Williamsburg area is ideal for safety and school education.

Our eldest will start kindergarten next August and our youngest will be 2.

It seems like neighborhoods zoned for Magruder elementary or Waller Mill might make the most sense logistical for the commute to Newport News everyday. Do you recommend one school over the other? If so, why? Would love any info on teachers, programs, any recent experiences.. the good, the bad and everything in between. Class sizes are also important, so any insight on that would be appreciated.

Is one school zone neighborhood more conveniently located than the other— such as grocery stores, restaurants, etc?

We were most interested in language immersion (kids currently have that now), but that doesn’t seem to be offered at any of the schools. I do know that Waller Mill is a magnet school, but I’m not sure how much of difference that makes at the Kindergarten and first grade levels compared to the extra 15 minutes it would add on to the commute each day (it looks like Magruder is located more south, closer to work). Tell me if you think Waller Mill is worth the slightly longer commute.

Bonus points if you have any recommendations for daycare/preschools located close by one of the elementary schools! We’ll be moving midyear so the oldest child will go to the preschool first before starting kindergarten, while the youngest child would remain in the preschool the entire time.

Thanks in advance for helping a military family out!

Update: someone mention Tabb or Mount Vernon elementary— please give personal insights into that school/neighborhood as well! Thank you

🐾 Looking for places to train our detection dogs!

Hey everyone! I’m looking to connect with local businesses or property owners in the Williamsburg and Hampton Roads area who would be willing to let us use their spaces to train our detection dogs!

All of our handlers and dogs hold national certifications, and several of our dogs actively work in public schools helping keep firearms and drugs out of schools and keeping students and staff safe. Many of us have also worked NFL games, festivals and concerts.

A huge part of keeping our dogs sharp is getting them into new environments and exposing them to different buildings, distractions, and situations they may encounter while working.

We’re mainly looking for indoor locations like warehouses, offices, retail spaces, hotels, gyms, vacant buildings, or really any indoor space that would give our dogs something new to work through!

We are all experienced handlers and take training seriously. We are extremely respectful of other people’s property, will work around your schedule, and will always leave the space exactly how we found it. Our dogs are well-trained and under control at all times.

I’m also hoping to make some connections with local businesses and build relationships within the community. We’d love to have places we can come back to occasionally for training, while also getting to know and support other local businesses!

If you own a business, manage a property, or know someone who might be willing to help us out, please reach out!

Planning commission recommends large battery storage project in James City County

Post image
3 Upvotes

Despite the objections of residents, a large battery storage facility proposal in James City County is heading to the Board of Supervisors in November with the Planning Commission’s blessing.

The commission on Wednesday voted 5-2 to recommend approving Pelican Energy Storage’s 650-megawatt project at the former BASF acrylic fiber plant site near the Grove neighborhood. Grove is a working-class community that became home to many Black residents displaced by the creation of military installations in James City and York.

Some parents apply pressure as WJCC approaches redistricting vote

Post image
16 Upvotes

Some parents are applying pressure as Williamsburg-James City County Schools approaches voting to redistrict its attendance zones.

About two dozen spoke against WJCC’s proposed redistricting maps at Tuesday’s school board meeting; raising concerns about school diversity and concentrating economically disadvantaged students at some schools.

WJCC is adjusting its school zones for next year when it opens two new preschool centers, which will create room at some schools while leaving others overcrowded if changes aren’t approved.

Superintendent Daniel Keever says the division will shift teachers, staff and money as needed to meet student needs.

But several parents on Tuesday asked for more detailed information on the data used to build the proposal and specifics on how the division will allocate resources before the maps are approved.

The Wren Building?

I’ve acquired this portrait and am trying to find out the providence. It bears a resemblance to the Wren Building at William and Mary.
The Artist has signed it, it looks like P Dulley or P Duffey

I was initially drawn to the stick figures who look like they come from many eras and remind me a bit of Lowry’s Matchstalk men.

Any insight would be much appreciated, thank you!
