Developer I made a free app that converts files without opening anything: drag a file, tap Shift, let go

• Upvotes

I got tired of opening an app, exporting, picking a format and finding a folder just to turn one PNG into a JPG, so I built OrbitDrop.

How it works: start dragging any file in File Explorer, tap Shift, and a little wheel pops up under your cursor. Let go on what you want, and the new file appears right next to the original. The original is never changed.

Tap Shift again for Tools (compress to under 1 MB, resize, rotate, a small photo editor, copy text out of an image) and once more for Actions (copy/move to, share, zip). There's also Ctrl+Alt+Space if you'd rather not drag.

- Free, no account, no ads, no tracking
- Everything runs offline on your PC
- Open source (MIT): https://github.com/i3sam/OrbitDrop

Developer WinStacks 1.7 – A video walkthrough of my Windows desktop organizer

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone!

I shared WinStacks here a while ago, and I've been working on improving it since then.

Version 1.7 brings new top and bottom layouts, horizontal scrolling, the ability to keep multiple stacks open, and more customization options.

I also put together a video walkthrough showing how everything works.

WinStacks is still available for free, with additional features in the Pro version.

I'd love to hear what you think of the improvements!

Developer Shuck: free tray app to copy text from anything on screen (Windows 10/11, offline)

• Upvotes

I'm the developer. Shuck sits in the tray and does one thing: press Ctrl+Shift+2, drag over any text on your screen, and it's on your clipboard. Works on paused videos, screenshots, error dialogs, scanned PDFs and remote desktop windows.

Windows-specific bits:

- Small tray app, 6 MB installer, no admin rights needed

- Portable version too (unzip and run, nothing in the registry)

- Keyboard and screen reader friendly

- Fully offline, no account

Compared to PowerToys Text Extractor (Win+Shift+T): Shuck is better on blurry text, code and tables, gives you one-click buttons for links and emails, reads QR codes, and keeps your last 20 captures searchable. And it's one small app instead of a whole suite.

Free. English only for now.

App PerchShelf – a temporary shelf that appears while you drag files (dev here)

Hi r/windowsapps, I'm the developer of PerchShelf, a small utility for Windows 10 and 11.

The problem: dragging a file to a window that is hidden, on another monitor, or not open yet means holding the mouse button while you juggle windows. On the Mac, Yoink and Dropover solve this with a "shelf". PerchShelf does the same on Windows:

- Shake the mouse while dragging (or move to a screen edge) and a shelf appears next to the cursor

- Drop files there, let go, open the target at your own pace, drag them out (one or all at once)

- Files are held by reference, nothing is copied; plain drag moves, Ctrl+drag copies

- Also catches links, images and text dragged from Chrome or Edge

- Several shelves as tabs, a hotkey (Ctrl+Shift+F), stays out of fullscreen games

- Offline, no telemetry, UI in English, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese

It is on the Microsoft Store with a 30-day trial, then a one-time purchase:

https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9N86NC2DKFH5?cid=reddit

Feedback is very welcome, especially on what would make it fit your workflow. The first buyer reported a bug and it was fixed in the next update, so reports really do get acted on.

Question any way to set app time limits for myself on Windows 11 without a family account?

• Upvotes

App limits on my phone have been surprisingly useful, so I wanted to do the same on my PC. Mostly games that turn a quick break into the whole evening lol. Has anyone set this up for their own Windows account? Interested in what you actually kept using after the first week, and anything annoying about it.

Developer Built a free Windows 11 goals widget. No accounts, no subscriptions, everything stays local

Post image
• Upvotes

I’ve been looking for a simple Windows widget to keep track of my personal goals, but couldn’t really find anything that didn’t involve signing up for another service or connecting to some cloud platform.

I just wanted something simple that runs locally, so I ended up building it myself.

It’s called Focus. You can add up to 5 goals, choose which one you’re currently focusing on, and it’ll highlight that goal in the Windows 11 Widgets Board (Win + W).

No accounts, no cloud sync, no telemetry or subscriptions. Everything stays on your PC.

It’s free and just went live on the Microsoft Store:

Would be interested to hear what people think, particularly if there’s anything I could improve.

Developer Hi :) I made a portable Windows 11 dock that complements the taskbar

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, I enjoy wasting time customizing the look and feel of my desktop, so I made this app for myself.

Some time ago, when I was looking for something like a secondary taskbar or an app launcher, the only apps I could find were RocketDock and Winstep Nexus. I didn't like the look of them, so I decided to make one myself. Now there are a lot of options xD, but I had already made this, so I just wanted to share it in case someone wants to give it a try and hopefully likes it.

I wanted a dock that complements the taskbar, not a replacement for it. I like to keep my taskbar clean: on each monitor it only shows the apps open on that monitor, so I can tell more easily which app is where. This dock is just a nice-looking launcher, so the taskbar isn't cluttered with shortcuts.

I like to customize a lot, so I added options for pretty much everything I could think of, plus a few features that seemed useful, like forcing apps to open on the monitor where the dock is.

It's more useful with multiple monitors, but it's still cool with one display, at least for me xd

The look I was going for is pretty neutral, so it fits in with Windows 11 instead of feeling like its own theme. I also like portable apps, so this one is just an exe you put in its own folder. No installer, and it doesn't write to the Registry.

I've only used it on my setup. It works well here, and I fixed the bugs I ran into (or at least I think I did), but it may be rough on other setups idk lol.

Here's the repo if anyone wants to check it out :)

Developer I didn't want to pay for Soundpad, so I made a free soundboard that plays through your mic

• Upvotes

sounds go straight into discord or game chat through the mic you already use, no virtual cable. hotkeys work in-game, there's a voice changer, and it can play a sound when "YOU DIED" shows up on screen for example. no account, no ads, no paid tier, source on github. i made it, happy to take bug reports.

Discussion I built qpaste, it kills alt-tabbing when copying multiple items

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I made QPaste because I was tired of jumping between windows every time I needed to copy and paste a few things. Now I just turn it on, copy everything I need, and paste it all back in the same order. No switching back and forth.

It works in your language too. Whether you type in English, Russian, French, German, Polish, or another language, QPaste works the same way. A Russian user told me it wasn't working for them, so I fixed it for every keyboard.

New in this update:

\- Pick your own shortcut keys

\- A little counter shows how many items are left to paste

\- A handy notepad pops up when you need one

It's free and open source. No account and no internet needed. Any feedback or support means a lot. 🫂

Developer Mouzi: an open-source Downloads folder organizer, now on the Microsoft Store

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi! I'm the developer of Mouzi, a app that sits in your system tray and organizes your Downloads folder, or other folders you choose, using custom rules.

For example, you can send PDFs to Documents, move installers into their own folder, or sort files into folders by year and month. Everything is processed locally on your computer.

Main features:

  • Custom rules: combine file extensions, filename patterns, size and modification-date conditions.
  • Preview before organizing: see which rule matched each file and where it will go, then choose what to approve.
  • Automatic, manual and Suggest modes: let Mouzi organize files automatically or review queued operations yourself.
  • History and undo: review previous operations and undo selected changes.
  • Rename templates: rename files without moving them.
  • Only-new-files option: organize incoming files while leaving your existing folder contents alone.

Mouzi has just launched on the Microsoft Store. Buying it there supports my work on the project. The Store edition is digitally signed by Microsoft, with updates handled through the Store.

It's still open source, and you can still download it for free from GitHub.

If you try it, I'd like to hear what works for you and what needs improving.

Developer KinetiSub Studio: A lightweight native Windows desktop app for offline AI kinetic captions

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey Windows users!

Many modern video tools are switching to heavy web wrappers or cloud-only SaaS that require monthly subscriptions. I wanted to build a fast, native Windows desktop app for video creators that respects privacy and runs entirely on your local machine.

Key Features:

- Native Windows 64-bit application with minimal RAM usage.

- High-speed local AI speech transcription without sending video files over the internet.

- Customizable word-by-word kinetic animation presets (Hormozi / MrBeast styles).

- Supports CPU and NVIDIA CUDA acceleration with zero cloud queues.

- One-time purchase, zero subscriptions.

Storefront link: https://harshdgaj.itch.io/dynamic-caption-and-video-editor

Would love any feedback from fellow Windows creators!

Developer I made a free app that makes your side monitors glow with the colours of your main screen (Windows 10/11)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A few weeks ago I posted my five-screen setup, with the side screens glowing in the colours of the anime I was watching. A few people asked what software it was. Back then it was a pile of scripts, so I turned it into a proper app.

It is called Overscan. It reads the colours at the edges of your main screen and paints them across your other monitors as a soft glow, live. Think of the backlight on some TVs, except it is your other monitors doing it.

  • Runs as your wallpaper, so it sits behind your icons and never steals focus
  • Drag-and-drop layout, so it knows where your screens really are, gaps included
  • Works with videos, YouTube, local files and games
  • Brightness, look and speed settings, and you can pause it from the tray
  • Hides the taskbars on the side screens while it runs, and puts them back when it stops

Heads up

  • Free. No ads, no account, no trial. Closed source for now
  • Windows only. Built and tested on Windows 11. Windows 10 should work, but it has had less testing
  • Netflix, Prime, Disney+ and other copy-protected streams show up black to every screen-capture app, so those will not glow
  • Not code-signed yet, so Windows shows a warning. Click "More info", then "Run anyway"
  • Everything stays on your PC. It only goes online to check for updates (signed), and you can turn that off

Download: https://starsync.dev/overscan (installer, or a portable zip if you do not want to install anything)

It is still early. If it does something odd on your setup, tell me here or use Settings > Help > Report a problem. I am keen to hear from anyone with 3+ screens, mixed scaling, or Windows 10.

Developer Keeplit—a free app to keep Windows awake for a set time, with an optional closed-lid mode

I’m the developer. It’s free, no ads, no account, and it collects no data.

What it does: keeps Windows from going to sleep for a session you choose: a set time (1 min to 24 h), until a time of day, or until you stop it. When the session ends, Windows sleeps normally again. The screen can still turn off.

Closed lid: during a session, while plugged in (battery above 20%, up to 4 hours), it temporarily sets “When I close the lid” to Do nothing, then restores your own setting, even if the app crashes.

How it works: it uses Windows’ official keep-awake API (SetThreadExecutionState), not simulated mouse movement. No admin rights needed. Windows 10 (1809+) and 11, Intel/AMD/ARM.

Limitations: it can’t stop sleep if you press Sleep or the power button. It also can’t read the laptop’s temperature, so keep it on a desk.

Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NB6DF7ZLSK5

I’d appreciate feedback, especially if your laptop behaves oddly with the lid closed

Developer Italian tech site IlSoftware.it on Pulse, a free open-source app that explains Windows event logs in plain language

Thumbnail
ilsoftware.it
2 Upvotes

I'm the developer of Pulse. Happy to answer questions!

The article is in Italian, so a quick English summary: Pulse is a read-only diagnostics app for Windows. It reads the event logs Windows already keeps and shows them as a readable timeline. Instead of "Application Error, Event ID 1000" you get "Explorer unexpectedly closed. Windows restarted it."

Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9PNDTLNTJ82T

GitHub (MIT): https://github.com/Regncreative/Pulse

New since the article (1.4.0 → 1.4.3):

- Why your PC blue-screened or suddenly restarted (crash, forced power-off or power loss)

- What woke your PC from sleep

- Disk health for every drive (SMART, NVMe wear, temperature)

- Open an .evtx exported from another PC

- Custom date range in the timeline

It never changes Windows: no cleaner, no optimizer, no telemetry, no account. The optional Assistant only talks to a local AI on your own PC (Ollama or LM Studio).

To be upfront: I build Pulse with heavy AI assistance (Claude) and test every release myself. Feedback and bug reports are very welcome.

Developer VoxScribe now runs on Android too: offline voice typing that types into any app

VoxScribe started here as a Windows app: hold a hotkey anywhere, talk, release, and the text is typed into whatever app you’re in, with Whisper running on your own PC so nothing is uploaded. A lot of the feedback from this sub went straight into it. People worried about the Windows SmartScreen warning on an unsigned installer, so there’s now a plain page explaining it, plus winget and Scoop installs that usually avoid it. Someone asked for an adjustable typing delay for rich text editors that scramble fast input, and that’s in Settings now.

The big change is a version for phones. On Android a small floating button sits above your normal keyboard, and you hold or tap it to talk in any app. It runs fully on the phone and works in airplane mode, and it can also turn voice notes and videos into text or captions.

On Windows there’s a new Try harder key: if a word comes out wrong, press F8 within two minutes and the same recording runs again through a bigger model, and only the wrong words are retyped. Both apps also have dictation modes, so a chat message doesn’t end with a full stop while an email gets proper sentences, and neither one ever types into a password box.

It’s free and open source (MIT), with an optional one-time $14 Pro for bigger models and automation, and no subscription.

What would help most is a day of normal use and a note on where it fails: accents, jargon, apps where the text comes out wrong, or anything that felt slow or confusing. The Android version is brand new, so feedback on that is extra welcome.

Developer Deixis: free app for dictation, screenshots + screen recording that writes itself up (runs locally, no account needed)

Hi Guys!
I was paying for a dictation tool (Wispr Flow), a screenshot tool (Snagit) and a screen recorder (Loom). It all adds up, and several of them send your audio or recordings to the cloud. So I built one local-first tool instead.

  • Dictation: hold Ctrl+Win, talk, release, and clean text lands in whatever app has focus. Transcription runs on your CPU.
  • Screenshots: freeze the screen, drag a region, annotate.
  • Screen recording: one chord to start and stop, with pause. If you narrate, it transcribes on your machine, splits it into chapters and writes a title and summary. Like Loom, minus the account.
  • Free mode: talk while you point at things, and you get one note with your words and the screenshots together.
  • Meetings: record on your PC (or the Android app) and get a transcript, all on-device.
  • And a bunch more...

Everything that runs locally is free, with no account. The paid part ($49/yr) is only the cloud extras: share links, managed cleanup, and AI meeting notes and summaries. If you never pay, everything local keeps working.

The network requests the app can make are all listed here, so you can check the privacy claim yourself: https://deixis-voice.com/#privacy

Windows 10/11 (needs a 2013 or newer CPU), and Mac on Apple Silicon. Happy to answer anything, and looking forward to your feedback!

Hi folks! I’ve been building Take, a free screen recorder and editor for Windows 11; specifically designed for software demos, tutorials and walkthroughs.

You can record your screen, then adjust zooms and cursor movement and cut out mistakes. You can also add arrows, labels or numbered steps before exporting. It supports microphone and system audio too.

It is 100% local so everything stays on your computer. No account, watermark or cloud upload. I’ve attached a short promo to give you a feel for it.

Developer WindowThis: when one app or the whole screen isn't what you meant to share in your meeting

Here is a useful new app that I wrote.

If you present on Microsoft Teams, the share menu is mostly two choices: one application window, or a whole monitor. There's no "just this part of the screen" like Zoom's portion-of-screen share.

Teams makes you pick one app or everything on a display. Most real presentations sit in the middle—and whole-screen share has a second problem: viewers see every pixel on that monitor, squashed into their window. Your deck might only use half of an ultrawide or a 4K screen, but Teams still sends the full resolution. On their end it looks small and hard to read, even though it looks fine on yours.

That usually looks like:

  • You need two or three apps at once—slides and notes, browser and terminal—but Teams only lets you share one app, unless you share the entire screen and hope nothing else appears.
  • You're on an ultrawide or big monitor, and "share this display" shows personal stuff, empty space, and tiny content all at once.
  • The work you care about sits in one corner or one strip of the screen; sharing the monitor makes your actual demo a postage stamp for everyone else.
  • In Zoom you'd draw a box around what matters; in Teams you can't, so you rearrange, overshare, or tell people "sorry, squint at the top-left."

About Zoom: Zoom already has portion-of-screen share. WindowThis still helps when a rectangle isn't the same as "these apps." A region is whatever pixels fall inside the box—another window drifts in, a notification appears, something behind your apps shows in the gaps. Combine Windows builds one share around the apps you pick, blacks out the space between them, and follows them when you move or resize. You also get a single named window in the share list and a way to crop to what matters on a big monitor without sharing the whole display. Handy on Teams; still useful on Zoom.

What WindowThis does

It's a small Windows 10/11 app that shows a live copy of what you choose in a normal window—the kind you pick from the share list like Chrome or PowerPoint.

Two ways to set it up:

  1. Select an Area — drag a rectangle around only what people should see.
  2. Combine Windows — click the apps you want; one view that follows them, with black in the gaps so random desktop stuff between windows doesn't leak through. Save/Open dialogs tied to a picked app come along.

Share that window in the meeting. Viewers get that frame—not your entire ultrawide scaled down. Rename it so it's easy to find in the list. Ctrl+Shift+W from the tray. No account; processing stays on your PC.

Discussion Why do I have to do things myself that should be there by default?

I have been using Windows for quite some time and also have experience with various Linux distributions. I’ve noticed an interesting difference in how archives are handled: in Windows, you have to right-click the icon and select an "extract" option from the drop-down menu, whereas in Linux, you can simply double-click the file to extract all its contents. Currently, I handle this using a simple custom-built https://github.com/NemH/UNzip.git extraction tool, but is there something similar available - perhaps with more extensive functionality?
