They seem to be holding back missiles to have a very serious attack on Ukrainian energy supplies just as its getting cold. This story has been building for months. This is likely to be one of the biggest if not the biggest they will be able to put together.

1.1k

u/BringbackDreamBars 11d ago

If this is the energy knockout attempt, it puts the shutdowns in Kyiv potentially in context.

1.1k

u/warpigeon4L 11d ago

Isn’t it also a war crime to target civilian energy infrastructure

2.1k

u/wafflezgate 11d ago

Who is going to hold them accountable for it? War crimes are just words of no one can hold someone accountable for them and punish them accordingly. This war has been littered with crimes of all sorts.

Hell, how many countries with active warrants did Ben fly over to get to the Summit? Like 5? Trump has ushered in a new era of "Why does anybody do anything? Because they can." -style of it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission, it's even easier to ask for neither. Do what I want until someone stops me-type shit bc he's not smart enough to fathom there are more effective ways.

83

u/Worldly_Cobbler_1087 10d ago

This has been the way long before Trump was even born, go back to Japan invading Manchuria in 1931 where the league of nations did nothing about Japan or when Hailie Selaisse made a plea for help against the invasion from fascist Italy in 1936 who were using chemical weapons and nobody did anything about that either.

You guys really need to stop thinking that all this rot started with Donald Trump because as awful as he is he's just doing what has been done hundreds of times before him.

13

u/sohblob 10d ago

Right? Not even to mention the fact that putin didn't start being a dickhead once trump got elected.

The US' huggy-feely crap was... an attempt at order and peace; too bad the States couldn't get it together and practice what they preached, instead hypocritically basically relying on the same thuggish tactics behind-the-scenes to prop up the world "order".

I'm no fan of ruzzia or authoritarian regimes in general*, but I'm not gonna lie, as someone who doesn't align with the ideas that the entire world needs to be in lockstep with regards to delusions like "intellectual property" or puritanism deciding who can and can't accept credit card payments... I'm a bit happy with the idea of the Western world order learning to reconcile with people who don't do things the way we do, so long as those other ways still ensure basic human rights (which ruzzia does not).

With that said, Ruzzia absolutely needs to crash and burn at every opportunity for their attempts to subjugate Ukraine; also as an example to China to ensure they leave Taiwan alone and finally recognize their independence. My levity only extends to China at this point.

Anyways, thanks for coming to my TED talk

3

u/rpianojam 10d ago

levity?

2

u/CreditFunny2949 9d ago

Think they mean it as Russia has crossed a line that China has yet to.

3

u/mumofBuddy 10d ago

You’re right. International/allied intervention is the exception and not the rule, historically.

2

u/MPA2019 9d ago

Was going to say the same thing. Communist China has done it for decades as well.

2

u/berlandiera 10d ago

I’ve seen a lot of rotten fruit in my life. I haven’t stopped tossing rotten fruit today because of that. I certainly wouldn’t gleefully force others to eat it, either.

1

u/RedWomanJaz 8d ago

Almost nobody thinks the rot started with Drumpf. The thing is that he isn't making it better, either, because he's destroying everything any who came before him had gried to do for the betterment of the country. It's the same type of bs as Reagan taking Jimmy Carter's solar panels off of the White House roof (because I'm sure big oil had paid/was paying him and I firmly believe Reagan did everything during his disastrous presidency for a check and nothing else, because the famous actor's biggest role was to play the President), it's just being followed to its logical extreme. I know he wasn't the progenitor of original sin in this country, but Drumpf and his regime very well could be the ones to give us The Great Depression 2: Nuclear Boogaloo and that could spell the end of the country due to how catastrophic it would be. It's been done hundreds of times before him, but nowhere near the scale of near-total corruption of the USGov.

1

u/Worldly_Cobbler_1087 7d ago

Almost nobody thinks the rot started with Drumpf.

The comment I replied to literally put the blame on Trump

1

u/sorrybrooklynpool 6d ago

Yeah I get their sentiment but actually a lot of people do think the rot started with Drumpf. Reddit comments won't delineate where the rot started. Anyone can say the rot started well before America if we took it that far but with current concern and history, look at the present leaders and their allegiances.

-4

u/burrfan1 10d ago

Nope. He’s brought things down to a whole new level. Particularly domestically.

0

u/ba-na-na- 8d ago

But Trump definitely made it clear that USA under Trump openly does the same shit as Russia. US army jets sunk a bunch of fisherman boats because some of then likely carried drugs.

2

u/Professional_Art7907 8d ago

you really think with all the money we pay our government for the military, that they wouldn't know if there were drugs on those boats?

1

u/ba-na-na- 3d ago edited 3d ago

What are you rambling about, 1) military fighters blowing up civilian boats from other countries is a war crime regardless of drugs, 2) the army publicly said only some of those boats had drugs, 3) they conveniently destroyed all fhe supposed evidence

So the no-new-wars president is also a great detective, it seems

1

u/A_Rainbow_Mom 7d ago

This military? This military killed over 100 children a few hours into Trump's Iranian Fuckup.

An airborne intel unit can find out a big deal is going down, where, what they're carrying, and what time. But this administration isn't about planning. They want "warriors" with lots of testosterone.

Trump wanted to show the world he was a bad-ass killer, and Hegseth wanted to do the same. If there were massive amounts of drugs on those boats, the smart thing to do would be to show the world, live on television, that drug runners can't get into Trump's America. Do it over and over. Send big Navy ships. Capture the drug runners and plaster their faces on the internet and television. Film the military dumping millions of dollars worth of drugs in the oceans. Embed media and show the world *that* drug war.

Bombing regular ships, destroying any potential evidence that could be used to pressure a foreign government? That's not a mission. That's Roman theater.

86

u/GeoLaser 10d ago

Geopolitics is often just dick swinging. That is all that matters, and nukes. Ben has nukes. Ben has ways to send them at anyone.

27

u/ResearcherElegant516 10d ago

A lot of it is the fact that arresting a foreign leader is about the biggest sin in the diplomatic and intelligence world, but yeah. Posturing, and when anybody calls a bluff, they just dance for the cameras.

27

u/autospacer13 10d ago

I mean, the US did that to Maduro with no consequences whatsoever. Netanyahu cannot be arrested not due to any real taboo, but because he is too powerful. Realpolitik. And do not fall for any illusions of it having been otherwise in any other time in history. It has always been like so; whoever wields power acts within it to secure whatever their goal may be at the time, to the best of their ability.

2

u/feelwhatyouwant 10d ago

Ability and will. You have those, you can do anything.

2

u/DroneGuy12B 10d ago

We don’t have the ability to grab him like we did with Maduro. Maduro wasn’t surrounded by Mossad

1

u/ResearcherElegant516 8d ago

Yes, people do use whatever power they have to do what they want to do. I was referring to when the mayor of New York saidbhebeas going to arrest him if he came to New York. Not only is that highly illegal, I was referring to the fact that our (the US) primary purpose for being allied with Israel was and still is for sharing intelligence. It's not for military bases or some kind of Christian/Jewish connection. If that were attempted, most likely ALL of our foreign diplomats would promotly be thrown out of any country in which we have an embassy, more than likely our leased embassies, and maybe our military bases would be closed out. Worldwide. I only know this because I researched this particular thing, I'm not trying to be a know-it-all. Pretty much national suicide. That was a long way of saying I agree. Lol.

1

u/JohnWasElwood 5d ago

Why does everyone still get their panties in a wad about us picking up Maduro and holding him accountable, and Obama sends in a team to MURDER Osama Bin Laden and everybody cheers???

3

u/Outside-Strike7397 10d ago

Venezuela anyone?

1

u/RedneckStew 9d ago

Why bother arresting a foreign leader. In the not so distant past the CIA, spec ops, seals have whacked a few, under orders of course. Except for the CIA, Sometimes there aren't any explicit orders given and poof, that world leader is suddenly gone when his yacht exploded, killing everyone on board.

Or, or sometimes they make their own targets, hmm.

4

u/ttak82 10d ago

Yup. Folks in my country call it "Badmaashi".

3

u/sohblob 10d ago

that just means mischief/rogueishness in general. If people you know use that to refer to wickedness in politics that's still localized.

The german word for Machiavellianism in politics is realpolitik. It's more context specific and accurate, as opposed to just calling them "assholes".

History is just repeating itself now that all the people who remember all the reasons why war was bad are all dead.

6

u/FantaFantastico90 10d ago

.. because you don't stop even the worst people when they willingly come to negotiate, because if you do, no one will ever come willingly to negotiate again. This was made very clear by all involved countries. Don't really get the uproar about this.

3

u/obscure_monke 10d ago

how many countries with active warrants did Ben fly over to get to the Summit? Like 5?

Do you know that for sure? Most other times the plane he's flown out/in on has gone right through the middle of the Mediterranean according to ADSB data.

Or do you mean a different Ben with warrants than I'm thinking of?

2

u/FardoBaggins 10d ago

Easier to tear down than build up too.

4

u/StaceyTheStaceExplrr 10d ago

0 long term thinking from conservatives. Can barely see the end of their noses.

4

u/Sekuru-kaguvi2004 10d ago

Why do you guys act like the US and it's allies were perfect angels before Trump. To anyone outside the West it's obvious that the West has never cared for international "law"

2

u/BarkBeetleJuice 10d ago

They don't even ask for forgiveness. It's unprecedented.

3

u/Kakoopa 10d ago

This is literally completely precedented. It's happened throughout all of history. Countries ignored the mandate of the Holy Roman Empire, and then they did it with the League of Nations, and now they're doing it with NATO/EU/UN. Hell, countries did this kind of shit with the Coalitions against Napoleonic France when it was entirely within their best interest TO stick the course. It's completely precedented and shouldn't surprise anyone that knows anything about global community building.

2

u/sohblob 10d ago

Countries ignored the mandate of the Holy Roman Empire, and then they did it with the League of Nations, and now they're doing it with NATO/EU/UN

At least - and hilariously enough - they're now trying to set up a competing set of political and economic alliances. BRICS instead of the G7 and so on

it's like https://xkcd.com/927/ for security/economic assurances. I'm sure someone else will have a more relevant one though

0

u/BarkBeetleJuice 5d ago

I suppose I should have been more specific. It's unprecedented in America.

2

u/Easy_Fee9781 10d ago

They never admit they’re wrong to even need to ask for forgiveness.

1

u/SocrataThrace 10d ago

Hell, how many countries with active warrants did Ben fly over to get to the Summit? Like 5

Not as many as you think,

1

u/ElrosTar-Minyatur 10d ago

Silly to say Trump ushered this behavior in when leaders like Putin have been at the helm for decades.

1

u/ResearcherElegant516 8d ago edited 8d ago

It's not the same though, imo. Not that he's better, but with Putin you'll fall out of a window, he won't buy a billboard about it. Putin's about the objective and Trump doesn't even have a plan, he's just about the attention.

1

u/SwashbucklingWeiner 10d ago

Biden and Obama were plenty fine with themselves and allies violating international law.

1

u/Indydasher 10d ago

It’s the fastest way though, and Trump has limited time. 🤷🤔😂

1

u/ArchiCEC 9d ago

lol you are so blinded by your own bias if you think that attitude started with Trump

1

u/ResearcherElegant516 8d ago

In this country?

Because by any and all measures of 'war crimes', Israel has not committed any. But the useful leftists at the UN hate Jews and love Muslims which is why we are where we are.

This is a fun word

34

Haha I’m not sure if you’re aware but I’ve lifted it from a South Park episode. Has stuck in my head since I first heard it about a decade ago though.

7

u/dogmaticstar 10d ago

My ex used this word and told me he made it up. I am so glad that relationship didn’t pan out. Ffs.

Where I’m from that’s known as first degree patter theft. Glad you’re rid of them.

I’ll never understand people like this. You are one google search away from looking like a moronic liar.

Or maybe they just happened to make it up themselves as well?

2

This was the golden age of South Park for me. Honestly, any of the Cartman/Butters dynamic in an episode is peak.

1

Nah, it was the guidance counselor of this “pray the gay away” type camp for kids that Butters was mistakenly sent to lol

So you believe it’s the job of the US government to muddle in international affairs - correct?

5

u/mitchd123 10d ago

The US has made sure they muddle in international affairs. Where have you been?

9

u/UpperDog2627 10d ago

Venezuela, “drug boats”, Iran…

1

u/CassianCasius 10d ago

Yes. We can choose to not do business with countries we don't like. If it was up to me stop all dealings with Russia and any country that works with them. They can choose russian money or US money.

1

u/WindowTricky6645 10d ago

It's not meaningless to identify violations of international law. For one thing, it reinforces the norms that these things matter. It's just like there's a social value in calling a killing a murder even if the culprit is never brought to justice. And I agree it's unlikely that there will be immediate consequences in the vein of, say, the nuremberg trials, that doesn't mean there will never be accountability. (Unfortunately, I think years of western indulgence of Russia's crimes has emboldened them tremendously. I refer to various invasions or annexations of other borfering states as well as murders, terrorist actions in other sovereign countries, interference in elections (ahem!). The west's fear of nuclear attacks and its general unwillingness to act in a principled way to enforce the post-war norms just kicked the can down the road and ensured that when they finally went too far, it'd be a much bigger problem - though this is the classic stalinist salami-slice strategy repackaged for the 21st century.) For instance, the ICTY just wrapped up in 2017 or so, about 20-25 years since the end of the conflict. There's the ICC, but there's also national jurisdiction over international crimes, both explicitly under various treaties/conventions and through customary international law, which means even if the right wing trend does succeed in completely defanging institutions like the ICC, individual countries can still prosecute Russians for war crimes. (Certain Americans don't travel to certain countries for exactly this reason.)

I don't want to give up hope for civilization, despite the fact that for all our national fetishizing of words like freedom, the truest motivator since the Reagan years has been money.

2

u/TheBigCore 10d ago

the truest motivator since the Reagan years has been money.

The truest motivator since the dawn of civilization has been money.

1

u/WindowTricky6645 10d ago

It's certainly never been insignificant, but no, the country shifted in the 80s toward a much starker worship of wealth. The generations that survived the depression and ww2 had an understanding of the need for social cooperation that the rightwing revolution of the 80s and since has largely kiled off. That's when conservative and Republican became synonymous.

Before the Nixon years, you had honest-to-god liberal Republicans. They were marginalized during the Nixon years as Nixon embraced the "Southern Strategy" and courted religious conservatives and tapped into racist resentment. So, someone like John Lindsay, a much-loved mayor of NYC and liberal Republican became anathema to the GOP when in 68 he was a serious contender for the VP slot (crooked-ass Agnew was certainly a more on-brand partner for Tricky Dick).

I'd agree that the GOP was always the party of wealthy interests, but wealth wasn't the only thing that motivated their policies. There was always substantial chunk of the party that was socially progressive (Theodore Roosevelt is probably the only time since Lincoln that one was actually elected President, I grant you). But after 1980, the concept of a liberal republican was practically extinct.

1

u/luzzy91 10d ago

1

u/cfbfootballnerd 10d ago

It’s not our job to hold them accountable. You wanted the US to fuck off out of world affairs this is the type of shit that’s going to happen more and more frequently.

1

u/Foreign_Print9902 10d ago

Exactly. Remember Bucha? Everyone outside of Ukraine forgot at this point.

1

u/IHop_Waitress 10d ago

It's also not his job. It's the ICC's.

So I mean, there's that dose of reality...

0

u/Dry_Sheepherder6459 10d ago

You think American taxpayers should ‘hold Russia accountable’ and how do you propose we do that? And WHY??? That is the job of the FAILED United Nations - the do-nothing, money-grabbing shadow agency put in place by Democrats.

2

u/meganthem 10d ago

It's better than American taxpayers paying for unfavorable trade deals with a foreign policy enemy. America has no purpose giving Russia trade when other less evil countries can give us a better deal anyways and it says a lot about the administration that we're still talking about doing it.

-1

u/Dry_Sheepherder6459 10d ago

Oh, you mean like Hunter Biden’s war setup in Ukraine, which resulted in the political instability which led to invasion, after Hunter had the President ousted? You don’t know the truth about his activities with Burisma, do you?! It shows.

1

u/SuperSpecialAwesome- 10d ago

the do-nothing, money-grabbing shadow agency put in place by Democrats.

You're bitching about taxpayer money, yet you're gleefully forking over billions of dollars for the Iran War. What a dumbass.

Abortions are a human right, not much relevance to that here. I'm not a Democrat, just someone that values the individuals rights of choice.

-2

u/JTYdude99 10d ago

And that choice does what? Ends a human life. You call it a fetus? Guess what, that’s latin for “baby”. Oh well its just a zygote….well, if you put a pig, horse, and a human zygote under a microscope, you’ll be able to tell which zygote is a human 100% of the time.

Call it what you want, but its murder of a human life. These children need rights too. We can’t give it because they take those rights away selfishly.

3

u/Short-Recording587 10d ago

The answer is that countries should just give Ukraine the ability to carry out the same strike on Russian energy infrastructure.

2

u/TheNextGamer21 10d ago

I think they have actually been able to successfully cripple a lot of Russia’s energy infrastructure

1

u/shoobiedoobie 10d ago

Uhhh do you think Ukraine hasn’t targeted Russian infrastructure?

1

u/Short-Recording587 10d ago

Smaller scale stuff and usually with the oil industry. I’m saying the ability to destroy a significant portion of it, attacking power plants as well as oil production facilities.

Russia isn’t worried about not having power in winter right now.

8

u/xSquatchy 10d ago

Every war/ conflict is riddled with war crimes

2

u/spekt50 10d ago

Right, the main powers are at war or rattling sabers, everyone else sitting back like "wtf we gonna do?"

2

u/OkParamedic600 10d ago

All war is crime. This 21st century idea that “war” only happens against combatants is and will always be false.

4

u/asha1985 10d ago

How does the West hold them accountable at this point? Our systems and rules have proven shockingly ineffective against a Russia that simply doesn't care.

3

u/sharklaserguru 10d ago

Pretty sure at this point "war crime" just means a) Thing for talking heads on TV to babble on about or in the extreme case b) casus belli for one of the superpowers to invade a minor nation if they see a benefit to themselves.

1

u/Senpei1035 10d ago

b) is the case of Russia right now

2

u/Grouchy_Camera2863 10d ago

Yes but it needs to be said nonetheless

1

u/Locke66 10d ago

Who is going to hold them accountable for it? War crimes are just words of no one can hold someone accountable for them and punish them accordingly.

It's a much more dangerous world that this is the case. It feels like we are forgetting the horrors of war and authoritarianism that were learned during the last century.

1

u/BadAdviceBot 10d ago

I believe in Trump. This time for really reals.

1

u/Strict_Way_9467 10d ago

Trump will let Russia off the hook because he doesn't want the peepee tapes released

1

u/TheBigBackBeat 10d ago

Didn't you hear Joe Biden is still to blame for everything that goes wrong.

1

u/nicman24 10d ago

Ukraine with worse warcrimes would have been the traditional solution. the issue is that Ukraine is bound by the support that allies give

1

u/Antilles1138 10d ago

If nothing else it gives Ukraine cause for reciprocal attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. Though hitting their oil and gas infrastructure I'd think already kinda works for that and destroying their economic means of waging war.
