I wonder what Russia actually wants with Ukraine other than "it once was ours, we want it back"

Oil water and gas it’s not that deep.

Actually it is that deep. Poootin wants Ukraine for his imperialistic ambitions but also for all the rare earth minerals and as a way to further push into Europe.

This. Natural resources, strategic and geographical advantage, pushing back NATO and creating buffer space are all tangible benefits, but Putin is a history buff with a hard on for a return to imperialist Russia. You can’t be the czar if you aren’t fighting wars and taking lands. Hundreds of years of Russian conquest didn’t stop with the revolution. It just took on a new shape. The fall of the USSR and loss of Russian territory is an embarrassment he can’t live with. The best thing about Putin is that he’ll probably be dead in the next 10 years and with him that might finally die.

Exactly that. "On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians" - Putin refers to Kyiv as the cultural cradle of East Slavic Orthodox civilisation. A western Ukraine is the ultimate blow to Russia and their imperialistic ambitions. Russia, Ukraine and Belarus formed the triune russian nation. It's always been deeper than just resources.
