Russia/Ukraine Musk suggested Trump restrict Ukraine's Starlink service, Telegraph reports
https://kyivindependent.com/musk-asked-trump-to-restrict-ukraines-starlink-service-telegraph-reports/385
u/Fluffy_Technology27 1d ago edited 1d ago
Editor's Note: This is a developing story and is being updated.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk approached U.S. President Donald Trump with the idea of restricting Starlink speeds for Ukrainian forces, the Telegraph reported on Oct. 16, citing four sources familiar with the matter.
The news comes after SpaceX abruptly implemented a speed cap on Ukraine's vital Starshield service on Oct. 14, with no warning to Kyiv in advance. The sudden restriction disrupted multiple battlefield operations, including mid-range drone strikes and air defense.
Conflicting reports about the reason for the cutoff — and who was responsible — have left Ukraine with questions even after Starlink service stabilized on the front lines.
But the Telegraph on Oct. 16 reported that it was Musk who proposed the speed cap to Trump — and Trump "agreed," one source said.
The claim contradicts Musk's own comments on the matter. Following the Oct. 14 disruption, Musk wrote on his social media platform X that any Starlink restrictions applicable to the military were the ultimate decision of the White House.
"Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the U.S. government," he said. "Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the U.S. military and ultimately (the president)."
Musk neglected to mention his own role in the change.
A senior source told the Telegraph that after the chaos and violence that followed the restriction, Musk was concerned about negative consumer reactions in Europe.
"He tweeted out that he was innocent and that it was the U.S. administration that did it," the source reportedly said. "The reality is that they were both in it."
This account was confirmed by two Ukrainian sources and a high-ranking European official, according to the Telegraph.
The impact of the Starlink restriction in Ukraine was immediate, and carried high stakes for both soldiers and civilians. President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the deadly consequences in comments to reporters on the sidelines of an EU leaders' summit in Brussels Oct. 16.
"We use Starlink to intercept jet-powered Shaheds that strike our civilians and kill our families," Zelensky said.
"When the speed was reduced, we were unable to intercept some of the jet-powered Shaheds. We were unable to use a tool to protect civilians."
The restrictions also affected deliveries of food and water to troops operating in areas under constant Russian drone surveillance, the president said. Zelensky stressed that Ukrainian forces do not use Starlink for deep strikes inside Russia.
The Starlink incident came amid heightened tensions between Kyiv and the White House, with Trump demanding that Ukraine halt attacks on Russian oil refineries and making a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to import diesel from Russia.
The White House threatened to halt intelligence sharing if Ukraine refused to comply — even as Russia continued to pound Ukraine's energy grid night after night and attack civilians with ballistic missiles.
But Trump has also dodged responsibility for the decision to restrict Starlink. In remarks at the White House on Oct. 16, Trump said he did not think either he or Musk was responsible for the slowdown.
The Pentagon has given no public explanation regarding the restriction.
The future of Ukraine's Starlink service also remains murky. Zelensky said on Oct. 16 that Starlink is not yet operating at its former speed, but that speed is in the process of being restored.
A source in Ukraine's Defense Ministry told the Kyiv Independent on Oct. 15 that connectivity had "been restored and remains operational," but military personnel in Ukraine's drone sector have continued to report uneven performance.

The future is here. Follow the money and it'll always lead you to a stinky stench of a billionaire hiding in his bunker. Check who's bankrolling the attacks on Iran, or enabling the systematic mass murder of Palestinian children.

The craziest part is honestly how incompetent they all are. What do you mean they throttled the speed for a few days with no plan on how to explain why they did it, just to restore it again?? I know Trump is committing crimes daily, but this just seems especially pointless and stupid. Russia didn’t even gain anything significant for it, and the damage it does to Elon and the US’ weapons export to Europe is insane. No country is going to buy any of this shit.

u/Emosaurusrex 22h ago edited 21h ago
Like the line that Musk was afraid it would impact sales if anyone found out it was his idea as well, as if nobody was going to figure out when it's like 1 out of 4 people that could even do this. They're drug addled buffoons, but even this beyond exceptionally stupid by them. There has to be something more to this.
Europe is so frustratingly slow, there should be serious decoupling initiatives on absolutely every aspect on every level, in every country, you legitimately cannot trust ANYTHING out America that has remote control, be it MS office or fighter jets. This is the biggest wake up call even if they're late a few years. Straight up wartime sabotage.

u/Psychoanalytix 1d ago
People have been saying 25th amendment for 2 years... it will literally never happen
211
u/oldwatchlover 1d ago
THIS. 25th amendment requires a functioning cabinet putting country before party / personal power. I doubt you could get 1 vote from Trump’s cabinet, THAT IS BY DESIGN.
(I’m so triggered by naive people thinking that is still a thing. One of many guardrails Trump shredded along the way)
41
u/ZumboPrime 21h ago
Just a reminder that Trump didn't do all this by himself. The ENTIRE Republican Party are active participants and ALL OF THEM have embraced fascism.

No, it wouldn’t. If you want to remove a president impeachment is a much lower bar.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Throwaway-tan 18h ago
25th Amendment is so toothless, it's functionally just a mechanism for the cabinet to request Congress to run an impeachment trial.
- Cabinet votes to remove because President is incapable
- President says no, restores his own power
- Cabinet says nuh-uh, removes Presidents power again, petitions Congress to uphold the removal
- Congress must now vote 2/3 (in both chambers) to approve removal, vote down the removal or abstain and the President gets his power back after 21 days
Impeachment is almost a lower bar to cross because it only requires a simple majority in the House and 2/3 in the Senate.
Since Congress is incapable of removing the President, in spite of his clear illegal conduct, then 25th Amendment is basically useless because it requires even higher threshold from Congress.

Aside from the obvious negative PR, I feel like this sends out a very dangerous signal for all countries using any US made military hardware or services. This was bought and paid for by countries for Ukraine to use militarily, and USA just unilaterally cut it off at a critical time.
If USA is willing to do this for Starlink, why wouldn't they do this for stuff like F-35 or anything else they sell? Other countries surely realize this, so wouldn't this kill USA's MIC?
13
u/RaynOfFyre1 11h ago
Part of me thinks that Elon got his ego bruised when people started noticing that engagement on his Twitter posts dramatically decreased when Ukraine started taking out Russian bot farms data centers, so he wanted their drone strike abilities taken away.
Another part of me thinks that maybe Elon and Trump are in cahoots with Russia to keep those Russian bot farms as strong and active as they can be through the midterms to help stir up social discourse within the U.S. and promote ultra conservative, right wing, evangelical, MAGA, etc. propaganda

Do you want a legitimate answer rather than ragepost like the others here?
Long story short, military use of Starlink services in offensive weaponry makes Starlink a legal target in the war under international law, but because of domestic legal reasons, Starlink cannot unilaterally limit service at this point, so it wants the US Government to tell it to do so.
