Russia/Ukraine Russia nears U.S. satellite, raising alarm about intent
https://www.axios.com/2026/10/17/russia-ukraine-satellite-space517
u/Alexiasanchez 2h ago
This is what I don't understand with the US at the moment. You think you and Russia are starting to be on the same side, but you're still the enemy to Russia. No appeasement, no cosying up to them will make them forget the deep rooted hatred that was fostered in the cold war.

u/DillDeer 2h ago
RU is just playing this admin so hard. Make no mistake, Russia’s intention is to topple the US and they’re doing it with their social media bots, money, and raking advantage of thus idiot of a president (and the magat morons).

u/Infinite_Click_6589 2h ago
Russia told us how they would be waging war against us and their ex intelligence chief even went over it on the Carson show. And we still fell for it, hook line and sinker and have been doing so for almost 30 years now.
They've been actively attacking us for this long and we still pretend they aren't doing anything. It's absurd

u/what-fresh-hells 2h ago
Their election tampering and misinformation campaigns should've been treated as acts of aggression, but instead the republican party encouraged it because they benefited from it.

u/RsquSqd 2h ago
I vaguely remember seeing that. Wish I could find that video again

u/JesperJe 1h ago
I just saw it in another Reddit thread. Apparently it was in 1984, 42 years ago. https://youtu.be/Z1EA2ohrt5Q?is=-k5916Gl9Zt_uTG8

That shit is scary given what we know about some senators and others. Kissing the ring, economic sabotage, illusion of control.

We're doing it to ourselves just fine. We have a judge who wasn't even born here saying we should import more foreigners.
14
u/accountabilitycounts 2h ago
I don't know what the numbers are, but a bunch of us get it. A majority of Republicans are intentionally fooling themselves to justify staying in the cult.

u/hackrack 2h ago
Trump is not the US. He and MAGA have declared Americans like me their enemy. We heard them loud and clear. Now we’re getting ready to vommit them out of government and they are looking around seeking allies against the horde they’ve stired up against them. And who are the allies they look to?
32
u/dirty_papercut 1h ago
Unfortunately on the World Stage Trump and MAGA are America. They are the ones who dictate your foreign policy and therefore your image and dealings with other countries.
10
u/haillukin 1h ago
It’s embarrassing as an American that you can make a comment like this and I could have absolutely zero logical arguments against it…
•
13
u/Koud_biertje 2h ago
What if Elon really did mess with the voting machines in his two months in the government? What if maga wins Senate? What will you do?
11
u/lungben81 2h ago
I fear the only thing the sane US citizens will do is complain in social media, maybe some small protests.
I do not expect any significant opposition of the US citizens in case of an abolishment of democracy, but I hope I am wrong.
1
u/GoldenSama 1h ago
Voting is conducted by the states, that DOGE shit had nothing to do with it. They were doing other shady shit but literally the feds don't have access to the voting machines
4
u/cliffski 1h ago
There is zero, ZERO chance of free elections in the midterms. ICE will beat the crap out of anyone non-white trying to vote, the results will be hacked, and even if all that fails, they will be ignored. The US is a failed state collapsing int civil war. Its hilarious that people still expect a fascist king to be held back by 'midterms'. Wake up.
8
u/ImjustANewSneaker 1h ago edited 35m ago
People like you are worse by just wanting people to throw your hands up before anything even happens. If they beat up everyone… okay let’s wait till we get to that part. But don’t scare people into not voting.
•
u/AmphibianMammoth 37m ago
Trump leads the dominant group in America they’ve dominated since Reagan. Republicans are unfortunately the top of the pyramid in America

You lot voted him in. You lot have refused to remove him. You lot are responsible.

Putin pays Trump through whatever dumbshit laundering shitcoin thing he currently has going on. It's not deeper than that. Just personal monetary gain for the fat fuck.

Bro, the US president, the secretary of state”war” and I’m sure plenty others in this administration are out and out traitors working for Russia. Definitely think America will start bombing itself while the world watches on in horror.
•
u/Lumen__-___Spero 29m ago
Overcommitment to US lore and "worst of" descriptions tied to DJT. Seriously, several elements of his presidency were meant to be "gold standards" with a path of least resistance towards what not to do to be successful. It started before I was even born, and serves a political purpose in forming a baseline comparison for politicians in either direction, past and future. What pisses me off is that it is an intentional leaning in for a Black Swan event, with sterile half measures from Democrats while history is written. It wouldn't be the worst if there was course correction yet, same as Hindenburg/Hitler in their transition of power and commitment to poetic low point for Europe.
1
u/Djuren52 2h ago
You have to separate the state from the current administration. While the state USA might be well aware of the ingrained animosity between them and Russia the current administration doesn’t care enough and will sell the remaining goodwill for a few bucks. One also has to keep in mind that the Cold War is a long time ago. I myself am born in 1991, Germany, and while the Cold War and the GPR (DDR) are forever in people’s minds - rightfully so - it has never been a huge deal to my generation, even less to them ones that followed. There might be a large percentage of US Americans that know jackshit about the Cold War, only that they ve won it and that Red Dawn was a sick film while its sequel wasn’t.
•
1
u/haillukin 1h ago
I would say you are right about knowing jackshit about the Cold War. But even worse is that my fellow Americans tend to not know jackshit about jackshit in general regardless

A Russian nuclear sub could be granted clearance to enter US waters and surface in New York without the public knowing about it and Trump will welcome them,.then use the theeat of nuclear war to dismantle the US entirely. And Americans will still cheer for him.

u/ErgoMachina 2h ago
Let's be fair, some of them may get out and do a weekend protest with very clever signs.

Not Americans! Cult members! The rest of us are being psychologically tortured and held hostage by these sick bsrds! This is disgraceful and evil!
15
u/Joebranflakes 2h ago
I’m sure you’d continue to wring your hands and shake your heads as you did nothing while hoping the system that’s been rigged against you will save you from it. Because that’s where you are. The system no longer works for you, and I’m absolutely certain the midterms, one way or another will prove that once again. And you will still do nothing but watch it happen.
4
u/but_a_smoky_mirror 2h ago
What do you suggest people do?
8
8
u/lungben81 1h ago
Look at France (basically any year is fine), or Ukraine (Maidan), GDR or most Eastern Europe 1989 / 90, Arabic spring, etc.
There are lots of examples of successful public protests bringing democracy (or, in the French case, preventing reforms).

u/grrgrrtigergrr 1h ago
Here’s the thing, as an American. When ice came in and went nuts in our cities, people like me were in the streets, we created systems to alert neighbors. We showed up, we got tear gassed, some got shot or run over.
The people in the suburbs and rural America held up a sign and had parades once a quarter.
Your neighbors voted for this, not mine. You guys expect those of us in cities to do everything while you post tic tocs about how bad things are.
This is on your areas of the country to figure out, but you guys feel safe so you can’t be bothered. You know if things kick off it’s going to be in Chicago, NYC, Portland and Minneapolis… and we’ll have to be the ones dealing with it first hand again.
(You meaning rural and suburban, but the person I’m replying to because I don’t know where they live)

u/Joebranflakes 2h ago
Apparently nothing because answering that question for you in any way winds up with that answer.

They are enjoying the chaos. They know good and damn well there isn't much we can do without risking life and limb, and it's fun for them to shit on Americans while the very same fascism is taking hold in their countries as well. It's easy to talk revolution from behind a screen.

Timothy Snyder essentially describes (a certain country’s brand of) stupidity as a capacity to not remember things and to embrace contradiction.
This interview is very cringe but it demonstrates precisely what is at stake and plainly shows how it happened: https://youtu.be/9pe1SxTyhqc?t=1841
As an aside, I wonder what it would take for Shane Smith to update his toggle bolts to say “Ukraine” instead of “the Ukraine”. So, so, cringe.

Has the US tried asking russia not to invade its satellite space?
Guys the US should stop encroaching on russia clearly.. they are the good guys here..

Let's be clear. There is nothing that Russia can do to make Trump turn on them.
15
u/icemanpallmall 2h ago
Pretty sure they're selling every bit of intelligence they can to russia while they can. Im sure putin expected to be able to have his dipshit in power for much longer.
I sincerely hope that the dems dont fuck this up when they win in a few weeks.

u/Frequent_Opportunist 8m ago
The Dems are also (90% of all Congress members regardless of party) cashing checks from a small Middle Eastern country while voting every year to continue sending them billions. It's money laundering. Acting as foreign agents. Bipartisan fraud.

An old defeatist joke went like this:
An American got frozen waiting for a cure for his cancer. They wake him up 100 years later. Lead researcher takes him to a pub to talk over a beer.
"... .... So, did WW3 exist?"
"We called it Nuke War One, but yes."
"Who won?"
"Us"
"You called it One. So there were more?"
"Yes, Nuke wars Two and Three"
waiter brings the bill
"So who won #2 and #3 ?"
Waiter: "that will be 10 rubles and 50 kopeks, sirs."

I don't even care. At this point, that could be one less asset Trump can use to attack me so...
1
u/zanzara1968 2h ago
And why would they do anything bad when the US president is so friendly with uncle Vladimir?

u/HapticRecce 2h ago
Time was, threatening strategic surveillance assets was pushing on being an act of war...
2
u/enteringhope 2h ago
I don’t think this is a threat at all. It looks one of the joint ventures Trump and Putin are discussing now that sanctions have been removed. This will help build the nuclear data centers they discussed already

u/Nerezza_Floof_Seeker 2h ago
if its just observation it isnt anything particularly alarming or unusual. Pretty much every country spies on each others satellites this way; even the US has them

Let me guess it's just a special military proximity operation. Might even give the other satellite a love tap.

Russia has been doing this sort of stuff for the past few years. Direct anti-satellite ops or potentially related to interception of control traffic for potential later exploitation.

Starlinks should launch with 12-gauge semi-auto zip tied on. Great for emergency maneuvers requiring that extra "kick" and dealing with situations like this.

Ya’ll freaking out for nothing. Our PRESIDENT, is cool as a cucumber with Russia. Like America needs to chill. They ain’t gonna hurt you unless you show fear!!
2
u/Lazy-Explanation7165 1h ago
So cool with Russia that he wants to open a shared data center with them and buy diesel fuel from them. Russia buys fuel from Iran, sells to the US for a profit. Trumps so cool for helping Russia fight Ukraine by buying fuel from them. Oh, he is co cucumber like that he’s also helping russia help iran fight the war against the USA. What a genius. He’s not showing any fear! He is so fearless that he’s funding two enemies we are currently fighting. Genius!!!

LOL Yeah, it's more like "Hey Buddy... come on in, take what you want from this community that rejects me, we'll burn this place down together and I'll skip off to a palace in Moscow when we're done, k?"
That's what this is giving. They read us like a book, studied our limit and our discourse and used it against us with software automation to steer our behavior.
We totally deserved this.

Quick! Reduce sanctions and buy more oil from them!
