Driving on a separated freeway is actually a lot safer and less anxiety inducing then driving on the UP roads where people are speeding and going like 80 with only a thin strip of paint separating themselves from oncoming traffic. 😬

I don't mind driving on a freeway, or even a freeway through a large busy city.
But every time we visited downstate, when we reached the cities I'd always have my downstate wife drive, especially Telegraph Road. It has all the traffic of a multi-lane freeway but with all of the crazy locals and none of the safety features. I just didn't have the programmed background software daemons for that which she has, and it took too much attention for me.
I have known a few Yoopers who are simply terrified of large cities and crowds, and are convinced that everyone there will rape and rob you the moment you let your guard down.

Coming from leaving big city life years ago my advice is to stay out of the big city!

I had to read this like four times the spokane reference threw me off.
Driving down state was way scarier than spokane freeways to me.

I grew up in the western UP and went to Wisconsin much more frequently than downstate. Was in WA for college.

The route to Chicago through downtown Milwaukee is quite a ride.

I have had the displeasure of driving that route to the UP. Never, I mean Never again!

I think we've crossed paths on here before! I lived in Spokane from 2014-2018. Went to high school in western UP and returned in 2018.

Man I wish we had freeways. UP highways are either:
A) fluctuating between 35 and 60 in a line of 25 cars behind a camper
B) having your cruise set to 10 over the limit and still having an F-950 three inches from your back bumper

This includes northern Wisconsin too. If there are three cars ahead of me at a stop sign or on a county road I’m anxious.

I agree except for the traffic anxiety. I’m not 80 years old and can handle more than 2 lanes lol

I live in Ohio but the UP is my happy place. I was built for cold weather, 70 is my max and that’s just for swimming.

“I live in Ohio…” Why do that to yourself man? 😂

No, I cherish the warmth when we have it.
I am able to be patient.
I wish we had a through freeway, it would be great to be able to cross the UP quicker.

I love the summer I just definitely can tell when it’s over 70 as my body reacts quickly.
Can’t say I agree on the freeway though.

Thank god they raised it from 55 to 65 mph.
Also, during the Dominic Jacobetti years he pushed hard for more and more passing lanes, with the thought that it would slowly convert the entirety of US2 to 4 lanes if we added enough of them.

At the UP history conference someone did the keynote address on Jacobetti and I don’t think it went how they expected because by the end of the presentation the general feel of the room was “wow this guy was kind of a douche”

Yeah, so now everyone just drives 70-80 mph which is crazy dangerous when there are only a few feet separating your car from oncoming traffic (also going like 70-80 mph). It's kinda awful.

Yes, that is indeed how traffic works.
crazy dangerous
Yet the number of fatal crashes on US2 in the UP has remained flat at 5 per year, even after the speed change in 2017.

That is not how 75 mph traffic normally works. Usually there is a large separation from oncoming traffic to make it safer. Nice sarcastic tone though.

I'm taking points off for 3.
I've never encountered people driving so fast on non-highway/ highway road anywhere else than I do in the UP.
Oh, this road is 55? I'm doing 60 and will definitely get passed by any headlights behind me as though I were at a stand still. And if they can't pass, they will most certainly ride my ass until they can pass.
The only road I haven't been passed on like that is the Grand Marais Truck trail. Which I only recently learned was also considered the 407, but also H-58. Though, and it's probably because I drive it frequently, but 28 to Marquette from Munising can be a nightmare of impatient people at times. I'd chalk it up to speeding tourists, but that wouldn't explain the off seasons

If you’re behind me on 553, I’m only going 4 mph over the speed limit. Got pulled over in April going 71 mph.

There are hundreds of big brainless animals of many breeds who will happily walk into the roads on a whim. I’m not hitting one. I tend to let the tourists get ahead of me and set the pace.
So, either fall back at a safe distance, or act as the deer stopper. You decide.

I forgot to mention, you think we have cell service on all of our roads up here? Hahaha….. I don’t think it’s a cell phone issue
