is an autotune effect possible?

could the cpu and memory handle a vocal autotune effect? ive been fiddling around with the ZDL toolbox, porting the lightest autotune software i could find (opentune), but i only managed to get a metallic buffering mess so far.

if anyone is on a similar mission, id like some insight

About firmware modding of MS+ (increment/decrement patch number)

Both MS and MS+ pedals lack MIDI CC commands to increment/decrement current patch from dumb external controllers. So, on stock units, it is only possible to scroll through the patches using the embedded physical switches (Memory+ / Memory-). Nice try Zoom, but those buttons are unusable during live performances, unless you are some sort of goblin ballerina.

Many users use the M-Vave chocolate plus controller, and bind 4 patches to the 4 footswitches... maybe with multiple banks to have a multiple of 4 patches. If you are happy with that, stop reading.

Things changed in the last few days:

  • MS units now have the ability to scroll patches via CC 80/81 commands; see the latest version of the great matujuice/zoom-ms-midistomp project. BTW, thank you!
  • MS+ units can add this feature via custom modding of the firmware update executable.

https://reddit.com/link/1x7hbcv/video/utmw3gim6uvh1/player

The video is just a demonstration of what is possible with minimum effort (that is: use the chocolate to send inc/dec commands, using only 2 footswitches that will mimic the M+/M- buttons).

The bad news: I don't and will not have time to undergo management and support on github for a proper/clean modding project, nor expect me to distribute the patched executable that you see working on the video. Maybe it's even illegal. Really, it's not the right moment in my life for such commitment. But maybe someone else could try, because...

...the good news: the process is very straightforward if you have a reverse engineering mind. Fact is, you don't even need that. Claude free is enough in 3/4 work sessions. Just feed him:

  • the executable firmware update file of your pedal (e.g., MS-60B+ 1.20 .exe)
  • the executable file of a previous version of your pedal (e.g., MS-60B+ 1.10 from web archive)
  • the executable file of another pedal (e.g., MS-50G+)
  • the request to add to the firmware the capability to catch MIDI CC 80/81 messages to increment/decrement patches via external midi usb controller just like the Memory+/Memory- buttons
  • the following "hints":
    • the links to other related projects (e.g., midistomp);
    • CPU is DSP TI C674x with compact instruction set, like original Multistomp. Toolchain suggestion: binutils 2.42 with --target=tic6x-elf
    • Implementation suggestion: redirect the return of the stock CC midi command handler to new code as small as possible that will just handle CC 80/81; put this new code in useless const/text memory space;
    • do not touch bootloader, do not touch functions that will be executed at boot.

Really, that's it. Claude will chitchat technobabbly reverse engineering jargon for like 30 minutes and do that for you.

Update: it is also possible to add autorepeat.

Midistomp MOD v1.0: Add full USB MIDI to your ZOOM MS series pedal!

Post image
132 Upvotes

NEEDS A USB MIDI HOST BOX, PHONE OR COMPUTER

Hey everyone,

If you’ve ever wished your Zoom MultiStomp could play nice with a proper MIDI setup, I built something for that.

I put together MIDISTOMP, a custom firmware for the Zoom MultiStomp series that adds MIDI control, MIDI clock sync, and a few extra controls.

NEEDS A USB MIDI HOST, PHONE OR COMPUTER

What it does

  • Program Change: Load patches from a DAW, phone app, or drum machine.
  • Control Change: Toggle effects 1-6 on/off and tweak every knob (check the CC chart in the repo).
  • MIDI Clock + Start/Stop: Tempo-synced effects follow your clock, and custom effects stay on beat.
  • MIDI Menu: Turn receive on/off per message type, set your MIDI channel, and choose PC numbering.
  • Tempo Screen & Footswitch Shortcuts: Turn the knob or tap, lock tempo across patches, and use footswitch holds/combos for the tuner or tempo.

Compatibility & Testing

I've tested it on an MS-60B running the MS-50G 3.10 firmware. The MS-50G runs the same base firmware, so it should work, but I haven't tested it directly yet. An MS-70CDR version will happen once I get one.

If you try it on another model, let me know how it goes.

Installation

Grab Zoom's official MS-50G 3.10 updater, drag it onto MIDISTOMP-builder.exe from the releases page, and flash the modified updater it outputs. Full steps and recovery info are in the user guide on GitHub.

Custom Effects Support

MIDISTOMP works best with custom effects built around it, like the ones here: https://github.com/matujuice/zoom-ms-zdl-effects-pack.

Stock Zoom effects work fine with MIDI clock and CC, but they have limits: tempo changes can cut out delays, they don't respond to MIDI Start/Stop, and they don't align to the bar.

The custom effects built for this firmware follow the pedal's tempo natively, lock to the clock grid, restart on the downbeat when your DAW/drum machine sends Start, and keep running after Stop.

Feedback & Bug Reports

This is a solo project tested on one pedal, so your bug reports help a lot. If something breaks or acts weird, open an issue on GitHub. Let me know which pedal and MIDISTOMP version you're using, what you did, and what happened. Reports from MS-50G and MS-70CDR owners are especially welcome.

Check it out here: https://github.com/matujuice/zoom-ms-midistomp

Cheers! 🎛️⚡

Some BASS oriented NAM/IR for 1st gen MultiStomp (+on) models

Hi y'all!

Just wanted to contribute some bass specific custom ZDLs I've built. Most are cab IRs, plus my first NAM capture (of a mid-gain Darkglass Alpha Omega, just a test really). Most captures are taken from the Tone3000 website.

What I have to share so far is a couple cab selections made with Alex's HYBRID-IR:

Ampeg cabs (B15N, B15N+410, SVT810 and V4B 412)

2x15" cabs (Peavey BW, Fender Bassman, Vox, Science)

I've also made some individual cab IRs and the aforementioned Alpha Omega NAM capture using Roman's awesome tools (patch editor/manager, NAM/CAB loader, cover editor). BTW, that NAM implementation is THE ONLY ONE I'VE SEEN ON ANY MULTIFX THAT HAS A CLEAN BLEND (might not be a thing for guitar players, it's essential for bass guitar).

Only HYBRID-IR made ZDLs carry a custom cover image you can see in your device. The rest have a cover PNG (optional for you to download), but those only show in Zoom Effect Manager, with the developer's cover showing in your pedal.

IMHO they sound great. Only thing is the NAM capture can only coexist with low DSP effects in a patch, otherwise DSP overflow occurs. That sucks in the case of the Alpha Omega, being a preamp. But if you go for full rig NAM captures you can definitely get a sufficiently baked in tone with that and a cab IR (which will load fine along with a NAM ZDL, either the HYBRID-IRs or individual cab IRs I've made).

Also, don't go too crazy on NAM and lose focus of what Zooms can already do. Old MultiStomps don't have Darkglass emulation, but the CMOS'ish kinda' overdrive can totally be faked (w/BaSqueak, a blendable RAT -RAT isn't CMOS, I know, but it just works with the Zoom emulation-). And it not being as DSP consuming as NAM captures, signal can then go thru' BassDrv + 160Comp + ZNR + a cabinet IR.

All these ZDLs have been tested both in my MS-60B (with MS-50G firmware for more FX slots) and in my G1Xon. I'm compiling WAVs and NAM captures to build some upright emulator next (also might try to make an IR WAV of the upright emulation on the A1four, which I already have installed in my B1Xfour). Will post if I come up with anything decent.

I also have this Zoom pedal hacking compilation point with all sorts of links to these and other awesome tools, pretty much anything you need to customize your pedals (also newer gen B3n/G3n/B1four/Xfour/G1four/Xfour). BTW, if you like having your Zooms constantly updated with new developments and want to enjoy so for many years to come, I think it's a good idea to DONATE TO THESE WISE GENEROUS PALS so that they can keep doing this (not affiliated, just thankful).

Hope some fellow bass players find this useful. Rock on 🤘

Nam A2 Lite and custom IR loader BETA is open for testing. I will film a video going over the details. Please read the documentation in the repo, it most likely has all the answers about the installation and compatibility with different pedals. Note that A2 captures take up most of the DSP, especially ones that already have cabs build in, there is Eco mode conversion (that doesn't sounds as good, but allows you to use other effects in the chain). Try it, let me know how if it works for you, I will try to answer questions as they come. Ideally we will consolidate some of these new efforts made by different people into something more cohesive, but thats a separate bulk of work. I will take some coffee now, cheers!

Free custom effects for Zoom MS pedals: Choral, DualShift, DubSiren, EuGate, WaveFold

I made five custom effects for Zoom MS pedals and I'm giving them away. They load through Zoom Effect Manager and show up in the DLY category. A sound preview is coming soon, I'll add it to this post and the GitHub page.

What they do

Choral: turns a guitar or synth into a vowel choir. Filters tuned to the vowels A E I O U shape the sound, and the Vowel knob morphs between them. There is a main voice and four side voices, and the Chord knob sets how the side voices sit around it: a small detune, a set interval, or one of 35 chords. A tempo-synced LFO moves the vowels, and 11 shapes decide how (a smooth sweep, steps, random, a canon where the voices follow each other, and more).

DualShft: two pitch shifters in parallel, each from -24 to +24 semitones (with fine steps around zero) and each with its own echo time from 12 ms to 1 second. A tempo-synced LFO bends the two in opposite directions, with 17 note lengths and 7 shapes. Good for detuned thickening, harmonies and slow moving shimmer.

DubSiren: a dub siren that you play with the footswitch. It has Wail, Fast, Slow and Laser modes, a pitch and depth control, and a rate that is either free or synced to tempo. Your own signal passes through untouched, and the siren goes into a tape-style echo with its own time and feedback, so you can push it into self-oscillation.

EuGate: a Euclidean rhythm gate. Steps sets the pattern length and Notes sets how many notes play, spread as evenly as possible, both up to 64. Any length other than 16, 32 or 64 runs against the bar, so you get polymeters. Shift rotates the pattern, Swing delays the weak 16ths, Gap leaves a tiny silence between notes that touch, Soft rounds the edges, and Reset restarts the pattern on each new note or when you turn the effect on.

WaveFold: a Buchla-style wavefolder. Five folding stages bend the signal back on itself as you turn up Drive, Symm adds even harmonics, Tone smooths the top, and the output level is matched to the input automatically. It has no oversampling, so high notes with a lot of Drive will alias. Some people like that. I'm those people.

The .ZDL files are under Releases; the readme explains every knob.

⚠️ Disclaimer

This is vibe coded. I built it with an AI assistant, and I'm not a professional DSP developer. Use it at your own risk. I'm not responsible for anything that happens to your pedal, your presets or your speakers, so back up your presets first and keep the volume low the first time you load each effect. This is unofficial and not affiliated with Zoom.

Tested on

A Zoom MS-60B running MS-50G firmware (I flashed it myself). The MS-70CDR, MS-50G and other MS pedals are untested. If you try them on one, please tell me whether they load and work.

It's built on themanro's ZoomMultistompZDL toolchain, which made all of this possible. The source is on GitHub if you want to look at it or change it. Feedback and bug reports are welcome.

Online patch library for MS and MS+ pedals

The sym.bios.is patch library is open. You can browse patches online and load them straight onto your pedal from the browser. The patches I upload are for MS-70CDR, MS-70CDR+ and MS-50G+ for now. If you sign in, you can upload and share your own patches as well, for more of the MS/MS+ family of pedals.

I'm adding more of my own patches throughout the day, so please check back. Here's one to start with, with a demo video (video is also in the details pane in the patch library).

Patch demo video: https://youtu.be/XRCwoFjZFMc
Direct link to patch: https://sym.bios.is/?patch=756d0a40-4abf-4655-8f66-b7d8e617391d&utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=library-soft

It needs Chrome or Edge on a computer, or Chrome on Android, since the pedal connects over USB.

My all in ZOOM board!

Post image
80 Upvotes

LONG POST :-

I managed to get together this board with old patch cables and power supply which i stopped using a while back. Recently got myself the MS60b plus and made some solid core sound with 160 comp, bass graphic eq and AGL amp and cab setup. Also made a cool patch with fretless simulator and another patch with octaver and envelope filter. After a few gigs with only MS60b plus i received really positive feedbacks. Though MS60b plus is enough on its own to handle my above patch needs but it was difficult to handle the operations by foot only because of its tiny footprint. So started hunting for MVAVE Chocolate Plus but the prices are too high to get in where I live so I had one B2four lying around and being both the ZOOM s from same generation and have same effects I decided to put them both. The B2four I stopped using earlier because the AMP/CAB was baked into one and the cab cannot be disabled or doesn’t have mix parameters. Now this problem was solved in MS60b plus. So now I have 11 blocks in total after combining both the pedals and for the price the output is unbeatable. Although it takes a bit of time to dial the right tone.

Signal chain :-

Bass -> Wireless Unit -> B2Four -> MS60b Plus

B2four handles all the comp, eq, octaver, filter, fretless sim and chorus etc. MS60b plus handles the Amp/Cab, Highpass and lowpass eq. And for gigs where i only need a clean tone or just a drive I just pull out the MS60b plus and carry it in my gig bag for that particular gig. I also have a tonex one where I have dialled in a similar core sound with the Aguilar Tone model which came with Signature bass collections.

Zoom MS-100BT

Built a new UI for the MS-100BT:

https://1njected.github.io/ms-stompctrl/

Connect the pedal in OS Bluetooth settings, then connect in web app. Requires Chrome or Chrome-based browser.

UPDATES:

There are some issues were macos locks the Bluetooth device so the web browser cannot use it. The only workaround was to create a macos app that uses a lower level bluetooth stack than the web browser.

https://github.com/1njected/ms-stompctrl/releases/tag/macos-v0.1.2

Have also added some features such as import .cdr70 patches, export of single patches, random creation of patches, import single .zdl files and updated the UI to match the pedal colors.

Also loads NAM!

Four new free effects for the Zoom MS-70CDR+ and MS-50G+

Rockstar is a concert-hall reverb with a rate-crusher, Pong Delay is a true-stereo ping-pong delay with a resonant filter, Vortex is a twelve-mode resonant filter with drive, and Duo Chorus is a true-stereo dual-line chorus. All four are based on open-source MIT-licensed work, and the pedal runs them like any other effect.

Zoom MultiStomp ZDL Update

Post image
195 Upvotes

Few updates to https://github.com/themanro/ZoomMultistompZDL

Project is coming along and getting better. Fix few longstanding issues and added a couple meaningful features as:

https://reddit.com/link/1wg46dw/video/6kyyjxk9mhph1/player

Custom patches sound right the moment you load them.
No more nudging a knob to wake an effect up — your saved settings come back straight away, in all six slots. This was the long-standing annoyance where the screen showed your values but the sound was dry.

Every knob works from the Patch Editor, in all six slots.
Slots 4–6 used to have an issue where turning knobs in PE wouldn't be audible unless turned on the pedal itself. Fixed.

Mix at 0 is now properly dry.
It used to jump to halfway instead.

Effects changes:

  • Gyre — a new granular feedback loop effect. Grains recirculate and can be pitched as they go, so you can get anything from a smeared wash to a slowly climbing drone. Decay at 0 holds forever without running away.
  • Rewire — new Shift block: a real frequency shifter (!), so it slides partials off-key rather than transposing. Five blocks now, still reorderable.
  • Oxide — the knobs from Input onward were wired to the wrong controls; fixed. It also had no dry blend at all, and got much louder as you turned Input up. Both sorted.
  • Rooms — Depth actually does something now (room size in ROOM mode). It was on the panel but did nothing.
  • Spool — Feed now goes all the way into self-oscillation. It used to top out short of it.
  • Howl — no longer lifts the volume of the whole patch.
  • Stasis — proper dry/wet Mix while a capture is held. New additional capture mode via turning Capture knob from 1 to 2.
  • Dustbox — new effect by Marcelo Fuentes

Other Patch Editor Changes:

  • Program a midi controller of your choice (I used MiniLab 3 but it should work with others too) to turn knobs and and switch effects
  • Copy/paste user patches as text snippets
  • New patch library/bank layout with ability to save/backup patches locally
  • New interface themes

Let me know what you think!

Cheers.

Settings to try out trying to make my acoustic sound like an electric guitar

Hello! I have a Zoom MS-70CDR but I've been using it very little yet (I switch between a very simple chorus and a reverb sound). Something came up with a band member who used to play electric guitar and I'm going to cover for him some of his solos. I would really appreciate some tips on how to use my pedal to emulate a classic electric guitar sound. I know this is very very broad but any ideas will be appreciated. I'm not looking for a really distorted sound so maybe it is feasible. Or anything that might help my acoustic have a little "punch" and more presence. Thank you very much.

Zoom MS-50G repair

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I recently got a broken Zoom MS-50G basically for free and I'd like to repair it, if possible. I'm a newbie in this world so please forgive me if I write something stupid.

The pedal doesn't turn on, I tried with USB, 9v, AA batteries and with and without cables. It just doesn't do anything. I disassembled it completely and I inspected everything, the only thing I found that looks suspicious is this resistor. It looks broken. Is it? Could it be the problem? I tested with a multimeter and in the continuity test I get no beeps and an O.L. result.

Thanks for your help!
