Recommendation Awful Security Guard at the Hospital Told Me to Go Home After a Bat Bit Me

Okay so I got bit by a bat recently. I keep my lawn mower in a shed and when I opened the sliding door the little bastard fell on top of me and bit my hand. I shooed it away and immediately went to urgent care. The doctor and nurses were all really nice, but they had the unfortunate task of explaining to me the awful rabies situation in Rochester. Apparently there is a threshold that needs to be met in order to get a rabies shot covered by the state. While they were confident I met it (apparently even just having one flying by you in your home can make you qualify), if it isn’t played by the county, you have to pay $20,000 out of pocket. Because they weren’t answering their phones, they advised me to drive to the Monroe Community Hospital to speak with their rabies center to get it approved.

I drove there and walked around looking for the right department, and found a nurse who freaked out when I told her what happened and told me where to go. It was then I encountered this idiot security guard. I told him that the nurse told me to talk go to the rabies people on the third floor (the security guard manned the elevator). He asked me what happened, so I told him the story. He then asked me if I had the bat with me. Confused, I said no and that I shooed it away. He then advised me to GO HOME and that I was WASTING EVERYONES TIME. He said that I needed to bring in the bat so it could be tested and that the doctor was just going to tell me to leave. I told him that the doctors and nurses I talked to thus far were very concerned so I wanted to hear it from them personally. He rolled his eyes and called someone down. When the rabies doctor came over to me, I explained what happened and he literally said “Oh my god, you definitely need to get a shot.” I stared daggers at the security guard who did not react. The doctor signed a form and told me to go BACK TO THE HOSPITAL I JUST CAME FROM to get the shot.

I rushed back, gave them the paperwork, got eight total shots that day and another three in the days after. After getting the first round of shots, I told the nurse who gave me the shots what happened with the security guard and she was mortified. She told me that as a nurse it is beaten into them to not give medical advice like they are a doctor. The fact that a security guard did it was insane to her.

Look, I don’t want to get anyone fired, but this was crazy, right? The dust has settled, I’m not rabid, and I now have bat alarms in my shed, but should I contact the Monroe hospital about this security guard? This entire experience was insane .

Fun Comedian Joel McHale’s flight was canceled, so he took a nearly 6-hour Uber ride from Rochester, NY, to NYC to make his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. He paid $692 for the ride, tipped the driver $200, and covered his gas costs.

Recommendation Cheddar was adopted, but my girl Jelly Bean is here for you!

I posted here last week about my Doggy Day Out adventures to motivate Saturday morning walks. I'm happy to say Cheddar from last week was adopted 😊 This week I went out with this adorable girl Jelly Bean!

Jelly Bean is almost two years old and a ball of energy! She absolutely loves giving kisses, hugs, and treats. Very curious about everything and happy to explore!

This girl is so soft it feels like she's wearing velvet.

Maybe not the best navigator for a long car ride... After our walk she immediately fell asleep curled up like a cat and snored so loud I could hear her over the music 😅

She also absolutely thinks she is not too big to be a lap dog little baby.

If you're interested, you can see her at Lollypop Farm's main campus!

Very happy for them. My wife and I have been going there almost since the beginning (after our falling out with OPG) and they never disappoint. Glad to see them getting this kind of recognition.

Recommendation Looking for a wingman to hit the bars and advice on dating in Rochester

• Upvotes

Hey everyone, straight 27M here. I am a foreign national and I have been living in Rochester for a little over a year. My main goal with this post is to find a wingman to hit the town with, but I am also looking for some advice on the local dating scene.

I do not have a ton of free time to commit to regular hobby groups, so going out to bars or venues is my main option for meeting single women. I am completely open to the vibe. Quiet bars, loud clubs, whatever works.

But so far, going solo to places like Vinyl or Photo City Music Hall has not worked out, and it is honestly getting a little frustrating. I know I am a kind and genuine guy, but it feels like the second I try to approach someone, they are already showing disinterest before I even get a chance to make a real connection. I get the vibe that they are annoyed or closed off even when I make a solid, respectful effort to just say hello.

I read a recent post on this sub saying Rochester locals can sometimes be a bit cold to immigrants. I am wondering if that is the vibe I am running into, or if I am just approaching the wrong crowds.

I want to put myself out there and be clear about wanting to date women, but respectfully and without coming off as a creep. It is definitely harder to brush off that instant rejection when you are alone, which is why I am looking for someone to team up with.

Where do single people in their late 20s actually go to mingle around here? And if there are any other guys in the same boat, or someone who just knows the local scene well and wants to grab a drink and be wingmen, please hit me up.

Event Emergency Preparedness Workshop at Abundance Co-op on November 7 | Build Community, Not Bunkers

Would you know what to do 3 days, 3 weeks, or 3 months after a disaster?

Ready Rochester is hosting another Build Community, Not Bunkers workshop on Saturday, November 7, this time at Abundance Food Co-op on South Avenue.

We've hosted a couple of these workshops around Rochester already, and we're excited to bring the next one to the South Wedge.

We'll talk through practical emergency preparedness, what happens when everyday systems are disrupted, and how neighbors can share skills, resources, and support when something goes wrong.

You'll also have an opportunity to start putting your own preparedness plan on paper and meet other Rochester residents who are thinking about the same things.

Event details:

- When: Saturday, November 7, 9:30 AM–12:30 PM

- Where: Abundance Food Co-op, 571 South Avenue, Rochester

- Cost: Free

- Who: Adults 18+, no prior experience needed

The workshop is free, but registration is requested so we can plan for attendance.

Help ISO: Local Blacksmith or Metalworker who knows knives

TL;DR: Looking for somebody who can completely regrind the edge of an 8" chef's knife for me. It does not need a simple sharpening but a complete reset.

EDIT: Please don't give the the classic reddit answer of "do it yourself." I would not be asking this question if that's what I wanted

EDIT 2: Since it appears the first one wasn't enough, please do not advise me to do it myself.

I bought an 8" kitchen knife from a blacksmith down in Geneseo at a craft fair earlier this year. It's nice looking and I love the heft of it and the way the grip fits in my hand. Unfortunately, it was dull as a butter knife the day I bought it. I have a decent set of hones at home and usually sharpen my own knives (I'm merely passable at this,) but this did not help when I tried.

I took it to a hardware store with one of those ReGrind machines this week, which helped a little: the knife can *almost* cut through a potato now.

At this point I am thinking the guy who made this knife just completely bungled the angle of the edge. Any recommendations for local blacksmiths or similar who can regrind it? Naturally I am a paying customer.

Fun A few weeks ago someone asked for help practicing for a road test. Mission Accomplished.

Some of you may remember a post from a young professional looking for help practicing for their road test with only a few weeks left before the exam.

I thought about it. I have taught a bunch of friends, family and neighbors how to drive and how to drive stick shift. I thought about the circumstances under which someone might need help and not have a support network to lean on for something so important. They are from another city, with no car, and needed a license to travel for work and to ultimately buy their own car. I understood the risk of meeting a complete stranger and the fear we have that people are not always operating in good faith - we both believed the other was genuine.

I told them to message me. They did. I told them that if they could get to the site I use to teach people (a large empty plaza), I would meet them and do a lesson and see how it went. We chose to trust each other. We ended up doing 3 lessons of 90minutes each, I let them tell me what price they thought was fair and they did. I accepted.

I wanted to follow up and say that after 3 lessons, they texted me yesterday excited that they passed their drivers test! We are both excited.

In what sometimes feels like a crumbling, devolving world where everyday people struggle with everyday tasks, it felt very good to be able to just be kind and helpful. So if you see someone asking for help, and you can help, take a moment to consider how hard it is to ask for help and sometimes how easy it is to give it.

Hopefully we have one more careful driver who has now mastered the parallel park and k-turn lol.

Central New York friends: are you in need of the love of the best and most cute dog ever? Please consider adopting Winston. He is a five year old collie/hound mix who sadly came from abusive circumstances, but now is thriving and ready for a fur-ever home!

He needs a calm home with patient dog parents to help him thrive (calm dogs and kids 12 and older are okay, cats are not). He is at foster now but needs to be adopted by November 15th.

If you are interested or know someone who might be interested, details are here: http://cayugadogrescue.org/wp/2026/07/winston-2/

Hi! I am trying to figure out what to do with lot of high-end stereo equipment. This was all my father's equipment and I know nothing about stereos, so l am a complete loss as to what to do with everything. This is what I have:

- 3 Cambridge Audio Units (CXC CD player, CXN v2 Digital pre-amp, CX A61)
- Victrola turntable (model VPT-2000)
- 4 Sonos Bluetooth speakers and hub
- iRiver AK CD ripper MKII
- Astell&Kern KANN digital audio player
- Brennan B3 HiFi media player
- Luxman K-112 cassette deck
- Panasonic VHS/DVD recorder (model DMR-EZ47V)

I also have 300+ classical CDs, 300+ pop/rock CDs,
300+ record albums (although some may be scratched), and many boxes of miscellaneous cables and wires (some never used).

If anyone is interested in any of these components or knows anywhere that I can take them, please let me know!!

History Does anyone remember the metal band Blind Identity from Rochester?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Does anyone remember the metal band Blind Identity from Rochester? They played the 'nu-metal' style in the late 90s to early 2000s. They released a few CDs that are super dope. I've talked to all the band members and they don't have any left. Did anyone here have any of their CDs or know where I could find any? I'd love to get them all archived. I have the MP3s and they are absolutely killer. Thank you, and anything helps.

Recommendation There's an old thread here about the Woodcliff Hotel

but the thread is archived so I can't ask any follow up questions. I have a retreat there this summer. I'm looking forward to it and I would love to stay on site, it makes it so convenient to run back and forth to my room, take a lunchtime nap, etc. However that thread kinda scared me away. Have they improved in the last year? I'm wondering if I should stay elsewhere and drive there daily instead. If I do that, I was looking at DelMonte. Any other recommendations? I don't mind splurging when it comes to travel, so tell me what's very best in that area.

Discussion Looking for Bulgarians in ROC

Hello all,

I’m not particularly new to the area and neither is my wife, but she’s originally from Bulgaria and is looking for a local connection for dinner and mezze. Our nearest Bulgarian friends are in Boston and Delaware.

We’re politically liberal and both have postgrad degrees. Looking for dinner and hopefully get to know you type conversation.

Cheers!
