Generally accepted TV placement procedures. Quick reference guide.
Lots of people posting lately asking “Is this too high?” so here is a quick guide on what is generally accepted TV placement procedure (GATPP) as seemingly defined by this subreddit.
- If the TV is above the fireplace, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is angled down, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is mounted to the wall above a TV stand, and the clearance between the stand and TV is equal to, or greater than ONE vertical PS5, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If when standing the TV is at eye level, IT IS TOO HIGH.
Now let’s look at some opposite GATPP use cases.
- If the TV is in a bedroom and meant to be viewed from the bed, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV’s only viewing position is in the reclined state, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If you are at a sports bar, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is at eye level when sitting down, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is in the kitchen it is more for listening, mounted high as to avoid any splashes or spills, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
I hope this helps clear up some questions. If you have any other rules to add, please comment below.

Settle an argument with my wife
She says it is too low but I feel like it’s just about perfect. What does the internet think?

Brother-in-law’s new Patio Addition
I’m not sure if he could have actually mounted it any higher.

My situation
Sitting 11 ish feet from the tv (83”), bottom edge of the tv is 35” off the ground, eyes are 40” off the ground, math says roughly 6.5 degrees vertical angle to the center and 30 degrees FOV
Not ideal but not bad enough to fix? What do we think

My parents TV
Definitely too high but this is where the last owners had it mounted. Better than over the fire place though.

Wife wants it mounted on wall, i think it would be too high.
I could mount it exactly where it is, but what’s the point of that at this point? Keep it on the feet are that one, the outlet is above it so there’s no cords on the mantle for cable management.
Thoughts?

Need A Bit Of Help
Thought I'd try here!
I have a dresser than I plan to move into my very small room. The dresser is about 5 ft tall.
I want to place my TV on top of thos dresser. I have down the measurements in the room and I have about 3 - 4 inches to spare afterwards!!
My question is this. If I'm lying in bed trying to watch TV, I worry it will be too high. Is there a safe way to give it say about a 2-3 inch tilt?
