Final Score?
I give it a 6/10. I hated Yuuichi as a protagonist and he's easily my least favorite Key lead. The art was bad, but I did get used to it. At one point I thought Yuuichi kinda looked like a Pez dispenser.
Overall Thoughts?
The routes felt like they needed more meat and time to explain and show off things better. Like, Shiori's was the worst. She's weeks away from death supposedly, but is walking around outside in the cold for hours and doesn't look sick at all. And I was kinda bored. I'd likely have dropped it after the first episode if I wasn't doing the rewatch. It also does the thing I don't like where once a girl's route is over the just disappear. I get that their route is over, but at least add some small scenes to show they're still there and friends. Averted a little with Nayuki.
Best Character?
Makoto. Mostly because she gave Yuuichi what he deserved and the prank wars were funny.
Favorite Moment?
That face Ayu makes when she finally gets to glomp Yuuichi was adorable.
Favorite Episode?
The episode with the dance. The girls looked great in their dresses, Mai looked happy, and the ending was a nice cliffhanger.
Favorite Scene?
Probably when Mai and Yuuichi were dancing. The miso tub was hilarious too.
Thing that surprised you the most?
Yuuichi got Ayu help fast enough after she fell from the tree to save her. A head injury bad enough to put her into a coma for seven years gives you a short window.
Oh! You meant a scene? Probably how random Akiko getting hit by a car was. Can any of the women in this show escape trauma or is Yuuichi cursed?
Favorite Joke?
Either the Makoto vs. Yuuchi prank war or girls constantly falling flat on their faces.
Saddest moment?
Shiori admitting she was that close to offing herself. Accidents and stuff are still tragedies and sad, sure. But someone getting to the point where life is so bad they don't want to keep going?

I did have a lot of fun, thank you for doing this. Definitely an old, old anime that I would not have gotten to know about otherwise.
Best Character?
Gremlin clears them all. Playful, overly enthusiastic, just the right amount of mischievous energy and a sad backstory, what more could you ask for? I would love to have a little sister like her, my life would be a better one, I'm sure of it ;)
Thing that surprised you the most?
How little the non-Yuuichi characters interacted with each other. Well maybe Nayuki was present during the other arcs but not enough IMO. I'm also surprised by how little the animation disturbed me, maybe a couple of minutes at the very beginning then I did not care at all. Weird.
Saddest moment?
When Nayuki realizes she will never have him the way she really wants to. I don't know why that gets me so much(the series did not dwell on this overly long), it's just heartbreaking to watch. I hate it for her. I don't really buy into the idea that the other parts of her life that seem to go well could make up for her missing out on him romantically. I don't even wanna think about it. Might just be a me thing though.
Very much looking forward to the 2006 version starting on monday <3

Let's talk about the series as a whole, shall we?
I'm giving it a 7 out of 10. There was some rough stuff in it, there was some good stuff in it. A lot of the concepts felt half baked or that they weren't explained all the way. I think the show was pretty rough at the very beginning, but got better once Mai was introduced. From there, we got some good content like the dance stuff or the car accident.
Isolated, this series has some great scenes. It's just it felt like there could have been more.
The animation didn't bother me after I got used to it. After a while, I just accepted it for what it was. I think the main problem is that a lot of the writing of the show feels like a series of events that just exist. We don't know why Mai was experiencing hallucinations. We don't know why Makoto was a fox or why she wanted revenge on Yuuichi. We don't know why Ayu came back after dying. They explained why Shiori loved Yuuichi, why Kaori wanted to keep her distance from Shiori, and also Nayuki's motivations, and those happen to be the best parts of the show.
The series also had some weird structuring where when the show is not focusing on certain characters, it's like they don't exist. Ayu was gone from like episode 8 until episode 11 and it really wasn't explained why. I think the weirdest structuring choice was the stretch from episode 8 until episode 10 that wrapped up Mai, Shiori, and Makoto's backstories all in subsequent episodes of each other. The pacing really was all over the place.
I'll be really curious to see what the 2006 series is like because I do think there is a good show in here. A couple of episodes near the end I have at an 8 out of 10 or higher; I think they really hit a groove in the last third of the show. If the 2006 show expands on its concepts while detailing some of the character motivations, I could see myself liking this more than Air, and I actually hold Air in high regard.
The 2002 adaptation of Kanon is solid, but it's also very flawed to where it feels like it could've been so much more. I've seen way worse shows, but at times it feels like they've bit off more than they could chew.
Time for 2006, uguu.
