Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.
Uguu!
This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.
Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the sub, by the way.
It's less a question of me watching this before work and more can I squeeze two in.
At least this series is on Crunchyroll which makes it more easily accessible.

I really like the intro. It fits the show and just has this Key feel to it. The intro to the 2002 series was good, but this in my opinion is better.
Also, man do the designs look way better here than in the 2002 series.

It's like a lot has happened, but Yuuichi has forgotten most of it.

And this is when Ayu bumps into Yuuichi.
She really looks like Mikuru from Haruhi.

And so they go back to the vendor and Yuuichi himself pays.

Yuuichi really regrets forgetting about Nayuki.

And he dreams of a girl he hanged out with.

He'll wait for her. He promises.

People are judging Yuuichi, so they run off together.
Ooh, I like this outro. It's pretty funky.
I'm not exactly sure it fits this show, but it's my kinda music and it's very catchy. I like how it's mostly Ayu running like she's in a race against time.
Overall, this was a good intro episode. A vast improvement from the 2001 one. We establish a lot of the key characters, the sections between Yuuichi and Nayuki were more dynamic and engaging, and the Ayu introduction was as great as it was last time. This was a vast improvement over the first episode of the 2002 series and better than a lot of the 2002 series episodes.
I have high hopes for this.

Okay, rewatching this series. Don't remember much other than liking one character and not liking the show in general. Here's to hoping I like it better this time. And I'll try not to gripe about Yuuichi if he's much the same in this version as the first anime.
Holy cow the animation and designs are so much better just ten seconds in. Their heads aren't half jaw now.
I like how Nayuki is the late one this time.
Nice, the OP is Last Regrets. It's also giving lots of hints in the OP for anyone that knows. Bunny girl and Nayuki with the twin braids.
Nayuki has scary good hearing.
Okay, it's showing underwear in this version.
How cold is it that you have to use hot water to thaw a gate so you can open it?
"Watch out for cars!" Yeah, in this weather they can come out of nowhere and slide into you when you're crossing the street.
"You're going to be living here forever." * Evil demon voice * "Forever and all eternity."
Wow, I don't think we saw Mai until episode 4 and Sayuri episode 5 in the 2002 version. Even the dog is there, haha.
Ooh, early cameo for two more girls. Kaori and the comic relief.
I was thinking he remembered more at this point than in the 2002 version, but I guess just specific things and doesn't remember most of it.
Uguu is here with a body slam! And he goes down!
Instead of 'My cabbages!' it's 'My taiyaki!'
Aww... poor taiyaki guy feels bad for scaring her enough to make her run away. She totally didn't run because she couldn't pay and wanted the taiyaki. Ayu is too innocent to be a thief.
Oh, they actually paid for it.
He's not wrong. You are weird. But weird is fun.
Poor Nayuki. She didn't head home first in this version.
Interesting. The alarm clock is a cat in this version but a frog in 2002.
It was interesting to see the similarities and changes between this and the 2002 version. This Yuuichi is a little better. His jokes seem more teasing than rude. And my goodness the art is so much better. The girls you can recognize, but Yuuichi seems so much more mature and handsome here.

Intro reminded me of a Shinkai film at first
Can't recall the promise
Yuuichi shows PTSD, otherwise he's a chill guy that seems at ease with anyone he meets
It's cool how many other characters we see in ep.1
Kitagawa reminds me of a certain someone in Clannad (same English VA)
Ayu is such a walking disaster, but her cuteness is charming
Uguu is pure anime legend
Ayu never has money, so a plot device will have to satiate her hunger throughout the series
Yuuichi always comes up with verbal gold
Yuuichi just never was smitten with his cousin - she's in for much pain
I never got that
Part of Yuuichi's PTSD left holes in his memory

Yuuichi seems to be the biggest change between adaptations besides of course the animation. He has more of a personality to him where he's snarky and full of himself. It was kinda hinted at in the previous adaptation, but it's more on display here.

Only one episode in and Yuuichi feels more smooth and less mean in his delivery of snark. Biggest improvement so far.

First-timer who has just seen the 2002 one, subbed
Very, very different from the old series. The art ist vastly improved but seeing such a mature Yuuichi was quite the trip. The character interactions are also vastly longer and improved, we even get minor appearances from side characters/different VN routes this early on. Everything is just better. (I still loved the old one ngl) Yuuichi's voice seems off to me though, we'll see if this continues to be an issue or not. Might just be a case of having to get used to it.
Many, many seeds for future storylines have been planted in this very first episode, quite impressive. One thing that remains the same from the old series is the warmth that Nayuki's home radiates, it's just so comfy with the mum and the pajamas and....just everything. I wanna jump right in and stay there for the winter.
Also cool that we got a mildly ecchi scene, that is already more than the whole 2002 series had. I'm not really sure it fits the general vibe of the story and series, we'll see.

Yuuichi is more suave and debonair in the 2006 series. I forgot about the ecchi scene - Nayuki was a lot more developed than I remembered, I missed that on previous watches. It's really cool how much gets revealed in ep.1.

I was surprised just how much was revealed in the first episode. I also recalled how the very beginning gave off Makoto Shinkai vibes with the train. I'm really glad I watched Sub this time - the Dub was fine, but the VA's just are on another level in the Sub. As I may have mentioned before - I usually watch this every year during the winter holiday - it always seemed right to me, as I grew up in an area that had snow, and I've lived in the California desert ever since. (no snow here). Everyone seemed so underdressed for the cold weather, but that's not uncommon for northern Japan. Nayuki. is so adorable, but it's going to be a rough ride for her crush on Yuuichi, who never shows any romantic feelings for his cousin. One thing I always wished I knew was how and why was Akiko a single Mom? Was she a widow, divorced or being a single Mom from day 1?

First timer sub
I never expected Yuuichi to be voiced by Tomokazu Sugita. Now my head is full of Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya speaking. Lol. In the final ED I also saw Yui Horie, which explains why the voice reminded me of Minori.
So far, I prefer the 2002 version. I think it's more faithful to the original work. Even though its plot can be confusing, it brings out the sorrow and the spirit of growth in the original. The 2006 version has a more comedic atmosphere and feels more like an anime adaptation.

This version doesn't have the same sense of tranquility as the other one. The previous version left a lot of blank space and room for imagination. Tomokazu Sugita's voice keeps reminding me of Mushoku Tensei and Haruhi Suzumiya. Lol

It sounds great. The lyrics in this version feel more powerful and moving.

I feel its premise is stronger than the 2002 version's. The first episode makes it clear that Yuuichi and Ayu made a promise, so she's the true main heroine.

The 2002 version didn't seem to have this part. Having the heroines show up one after another while someone shows Yuuichi around is a natural way to introduce them.

Oh my god, in the OP scenes she looks like an angel, and in her first appearance she emphasizes her wings.

I think introducing the characters sooner helps make things feel more alive and busy. I get Kanon is a slow burn and so perhaps the 2002 anime had more the right idea of using the first episode mainly to establish the setting, but this to me is more exciting. The tease of so many different things would pique my interest if I were someone coming into the show blind having seen none of the 2002 anime or the original source material.

Fisrt Timer
I have no idea what to expect from this. My first experience with Key visual novels and their adaptations was watching AIR for the first time last year.
I’ve heard of Clannad but only it’s reputation for being very depressing. Kanon is a series I’ve heard basically nothing about. So I’m interested in seeing where this goes.
Lots of snowy imagery here.
These girls with the big eyes drawn really far apart from each other is very reminiscent of AIR. I guess it’s a stable of these Key stories.
The joke of Yuichi here guessing his cousin name as Hanako is that it’s a common girls’ name sometimes used a placeholder name. For an English equivalent it’d be like if he guessed Jane.
The dub has him guess ‘Steve’ next but in the original he says the name ‘Jiro’ which is a very common boys name.
I like the theme song. Kinda reminds me of AIR’s theme song.
Red snow. That’s a very ominous dream.
I will be honest, both Yuichi and Nayuki come off as a bit generic right now.
Nayuki wears cute pajamas though, although maybe a bit too cutesy for a girl her age.
Nayuki’s school uniform seems very unconventional.
How old is Nayuki’s mom? For a mother she looks very youthful. Like, almost identical to Nayuki. It’s weird.
I definitely enjoy the wintery atmosphere here. Kind of a nice contrast to AIR which seemed to be perpetually summery.
Seems we have more characters to focus on. Mai and Sayuri.
Not sure what to make of Sayuri from her brief line here but Mai seems to be the quiet, contemplative type.
And now we have Kaori and Kitagawa. It’s very funny watching Kaori bully Kitagawa.
Yuichi doesn’t remember visiting this town before at all. That feels like it’ll be important.
That fox is pretty cute.
Yuichi has been tackled by a little girl. I swear this exact same thing happened in AIR.
She has a cute backpack. The wings kind of remind me of Koromaru from Persona 3.
This little girl might be a thief.
The girl turning around trying to see her back is really funny.
I do kinda get why Nayuki is upset about Yuichi even if she’s also being slightly unreasonable.
Nayuki apparently collects a lot of alarm clocks. Quite the collection.
Yuichi remembers a girl running. That seems very important.
This flashback to Yuichi’s childhood is interesting.
Wait is this the same Ayu in the flashback? Either some weird time shenanigans are going on or the Ayu in the present day is actually just a very short teenager.
If so, I apologize to her for calling her a little girl.
Much like AIR, I think I enjoy the ending theme even more than the opening theme.

Never for longer than a week but I've stayed over at my grandparents before when I was little. It was nice.
