Man... the only thing I don't like about this version so far is they replaced the frog clock.
Yuuichi, just get some ice cubes. Those work great at getting people up?
I sense a gag with the jam they left out in the 2002 version. It's power is unparalleled and you're just too weak to handle its greatness, Yuuichi.
Are they in Hokkaido with weather this cold and this much snow?
Kitagawa actually getting screen time in this version?
More Mai and Sayuri.

This school's so big I bet it's creepy at night. Maybe a test of courage or looking for the school mysteries and ghosts?

Best girl is here and she packs a punch! Kinda sad she didn't go Solid Snake and sneak in in the cardboard box like she did in the 2002 version.

I liked the sequence of Yuuichi exploring the school. It put over how he is kinda this fish out of water.

Why is the school so big, though? The city doesn't seem like it's a mega city. Though I guess in Japan a small city still has like 100k people.

Could be one of those ladder schools where you go from seventh grade all the way into college? Doesn't quite seem like that, though? But yeah, it is huge for a high school. Or Yuuichi is just that directionally challenged.

Hyouka also had a busy high school. It seemed like there were endless amount of clubs.

I get why they changed thr alarm to a cat because it fits more thematically, but the frog alarm had more aura to it.

The best thing about the frog is that it just seemed so random. The cat is standard cute that a normal teenage girl might have. She did have the frog stuffed animal, though.

I've heard that Japanese men often don't like sweets. They also don't fill their food with sugar like they do in the US.

You're too innocent for this world, Nayuki if you didn't get the implications. Of course, I think most people won't find it too weird a cousin is staying at her house. Maybe some good teasing, but I doubt anyone thinks they're doing anything naughty.

Pretty sure Nagatoro's nude art sessions weren't school sanctioned and in front of a whole class. Also, we didn't see the front of the nude guy, so there's a chance he was covered up front?

First watcher, only watching the 2006 series this time.
I'm not sure why they replaced Yuuichi's VA for the 2006 series, not that I hate Sugita, though, I was just wondering. (he'd be cast as the male lead again in Haruhi the year after)
Damn, that's a lot of alarms, and she's not awake after that? She could've probably learned a thing from Mr. Bean and put a hot water hose on her toes.
Wonder what the hell is inside that jam that Nayuki doesn't want any of it.
The "spy from an agency" thing sounds like something out of Haruhi, lol.
We now got an Auuu after the debut of Uguu the previous episode.

I never transferred school, so I can't answer.

I'm not sure why they replaced Yuuichi's VA for the 2006 series, not that I hate Sugita, though, I was just wondering.
In the earliest Key VNs, Kanon is like their second, the male MCs were rather bland and, more significantly, unvoiced. Although I didn't watch the '02 version, I did go through the audio dramas. If it was the same guy... he was unimpressive.
It seems KyoAni decided that Yuuichi needed more personality and that Sugita was most suitable for what they had in mind.
Can't say I disagree with that.

Uguu First Timer (except for E1)
The Kanon wiki says the city in this story is based on a portion of Osaka. There's a lot of snow for Osaka in the first two episodes. Temps don't seem to typically go below freezing and they maybe get a less than half of an inch of snow in January. This city feels more like something you'd see in Hokkido, where snow is more typical and heavy, like Sapporo. I saw all the show and was hoping it WAS Hokkido, but learned otherwise.
I think early Key stories feature too many girls that have like 1 braincell. Air, Kanon, and Clannad all feature girls in primary love interest roles that are just kinda dim, like they're 5 as opposed to teenagers. At least in Kanon, the male isn't a complete dick for no reason like in Air, but I don't know if he's as likable as the guy in Clannad. I think the MC having a male best friend helps a lot, too. This guy has nothing, mostly because there seems to be an amnesia theme here.
It seems there's some troublesome stuff in this show. Crunchyroll's content advisory list includes suicide. It also lists the Drama, Romance, and Thriller in the genres.
My guess is that something traumatic happened in past that is causing the amnesia.
There is no guarantee I'll be able to keep up with this rewatch on every day. October means playoff baseball and traveling for me. Also, if I don't like the direction the show is going (IE depressing), I'm more likely to drop it. Jun Maeda's name doesn't guarantee a depressing ending, but odds are tipped in favor of depressing for his stuff. Big reason I avoided Summer Pockets last year.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.
Uguu!
This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.
Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the sub, by the way.
I've seen The Odyssey three times in the last couple weeks. Great movie, probably my favorite movie of the year so far.
Talks of being in a dream
Yuuichi household
We hear the cat alarm
It's very talkative
Yuuichi staring outside
Now he wakes Nayuki up
And of course she sleeps through all her alarms. Naturally.
Nayuki finally wakes up
Is she normally this tall?
Breakfast time
The first day at Yuuichi's new school.
Yuuichi reveals he's not a fan of sweet things.
A shame, I exclusively like sweet things hence my diabetes.
Looks like Yuuichi is not a fan of the jam.

Yuuichi and Nayuki has off
Akiko asks Yuuichi to stop by the store on his way home.
Yuuichi still inquiring about the jam.
"You should prepare yourself for it."
They're acting like the homemade jam is an act of warfare lol

Nayuki asking if he remembers this area.

Then she falls off the stairs and collides with Sayuri and Mai.

As they leave, Yuuichi notices the blue ribbons in their hair. This apparently means they're seniors.
Nayuki and Yuuichi depart
Yuuichi wishes her well in practice
Yuuichi lost now
This is a pretty big place
Yuuichi is experiencing misfortune now as he roams the campus.
The school even has a nude art class? Nani?
Yuuichi with Kaori now
Says Nayuki described him as a strange guy which to Kaori seems accurate.
"I've never seen Nayuki look as happy as she did today."
Well, that's good at least
Yuuichi finally made his way out
But Kaori forgot about Kitagawa :P
Kaori treats Kitagawa how Yuuichi treats Nayuki.
Time to get the ingredients

I enjoy the back and forth between Yuuichi and Ayu.

Ayu, you're the exact opposite of a law-abiding citizen.
Well, this new girl seems nice

Ayu chalks it up to fate her and Yuuichi were brought back together.
Ayu casually revealing she's the same age as Yuuichi.
Yuuichi definitely thought she was a kid, huh?
The mysterious girl showed them the way home.

It's crazy how it's only been two episodes and Ayu has already said Uguu almost as much as her 2002 counterpart in the entire 2002 series.
As mystery girl leaves, Ayu says how much fun she had today.
Yuuichi promises to do it again tomorrow.

Overall, this was a decent episode. It introduced some of the characters we'll eventually get to know while furthering some of the pre existing characters. It didn’t really have a throughly to speak of which you can say is a problem structural wise, but I didn't mind the content and what was presented here. I have been especially enjoying how more involved Kaori and Kitagawa are here.
A slight step back from the previous episode, but still good. I thought this episode was gonna be more of a continuation of the last episode than it was, but I'm fine with what we got here.

First-timer for the 2006 version, subbed
Not a lot of time today so only one thing to note: best girl has arrived with style!
I can only repeat myself for this episode: everything is an upgrade from the 2002 version but what I like the most is how much time we get to spend on dialogues and interactions. I love that we already got to meet Mai, Kaori(she's soooo pretty in this version, was this always the intention?) and Shiori. And we ACTUALLY get to see them interact in different ways. This world feels a lot more lived in in terms of relationships.

First Timer
Very pretty imagery to go along with our opening narration.
Man, that’s a freaky alarm clock.
Kind of reminds me of a less horny version of Issei’s alarm clock from High School DxD.
Nayuki calmly sleeping while surrounded by like a dozen blaring alarm clocks is hilarious.
I am still not over how weirdly young Akiko looks.
Mmm, Akiko’s secret jam. I’m scared of what she puts in it.
His inability to remember anything about this town is growing to be slightly concerning.
There’s sort of a quiet slice of life vibe I’m enjoying. The wintery atmosphere is nice too.
Usually it’s the male character who falls face first into girls but this time it was Nayuki.
My notes for this section are pretty sparse since it’s mostly just Yuichi walking around school.
Ayu has once again slammed into Yuichi.
Yuichi is prejudiced against left handed people.
I refuse to believe that Ayu might be a teenager.
I’m surprised Ayu remembers Yuichi from so long ago.
Ayu running into a tree is really funny.
Ayu’s pretty adorable even when she’s being grumpy
Yuichi is just as surprised at me that Ayu is a teenager.
Who is this angry girl? She’s got Asuka style twintails so I assume she’s a tsundere.
I guess we’ll find out about her next time.
