Suggestion Improve the fairy ring interface instead of adding a fourth wheel
With Fairytale III on the horizon, I've been thinking about how the fairy ring network could be expanded without making the interface more cumbersome.
Instead of adding a fourth wheel, what if we expanded the existing three sections with extra letters?
My suggestions:
• click to select: Add more letters to each section to allow for new destinations while keeping the familiar three-letter code system.
• spinning is annoying: Instead of rotating through the letters, just click once for each letter and save time.
• Keep letters upright: With the current wheels, some letters can end up upside down, making them difficult to read. A selection-based interface would keep the letters easy to identify.
• Native keyboard entry: RuneLite already allows players to type fairy ring codes directly. It would be great to have this functionality in the official client too.
This would let Jagex expand the fairy ring network while keeping the three-letter format, making destinations easier to select, and avoiding the need for a fourth wheel.
I've attached my concept to illustrate how the interface could look.
What do you think?

I think what I really like about your approach is that patterns can be memorised visually as well, rather than the letters themselves. For example, BJS (blowjobs) is the code for Zulrah, whereas in your version I could just remember up-up-up instead of getting horny every time I wanna slay some serpent

The worst part about the fourth code wheel would be how much more difficult it'd be to memorize everything. BJS could surely mean Big Juicy Snake, but then it'd be WXYZ or something for the last wheel? So Big Juicy Snake... Xylophone.
Having it this way allows us to keep memorizing silly things like BaLleR to know where you're going.

u/Kodai_Dreaming 5d ago
You could also give each position on the wheel a unique colour so people can remember colour combos as well.
Please jamflex fairy ring interface is one of the most commonly encountered interfaces and it's so ass. This selector is instant and clean. If it's at all possible to rewrite it's worth it.

You can't type in the code directly, but you can type in the descriptions. So if you start typing "zul" it will bring up BJS for Zul-Andra. or "kal" will bring up BIQ for the Kalphite hive.

It's funny because zanaris was very clearly designed for big future expansion that never happened. Many of the map squares around zanaris were left empty to provide room for a bigger city in the future. As you've shown, the fairy ring system was designed with missing letters to allow for bigger wheels in the future.
The future is now, old man.

u/kevinsaurus 5d ago
I really hoped they would add sailing to areas outside of the actual seas of Gielinor. Needing a special ship that could sail through the lava flow of the Tzhaar caves or the cosmic seas of the moon Zanaris is located on would be a really cool setting for future barracuda trials or combat encounters.

have they said they'd be add a 4th wheel? seems like the obvious solution would just be to add a single additional letter to each wheel in the current design to double the capacity.

Yeah the original designers even left space for this, the left wheel is the start of the alphabet, the middle wheel is the middle, and the right wheel is near the end. So you can add extra letters no problem without changing any codes.

Never was really a fan of the other penguin quests in RS3. Haven’t done the last one yet, I’ll get around to it. The whole joke was just, hey wouldn’t it be crazy if the penguins were actually a secret intelligence agency, and the one guy that could figure it out is seen as insane?! But fuck that, bring back penguin hid and seek. I don’t care if it would be over powered, just nerf it and bring it back.

Glad you asked, I’m newish. I chose to not even use the rings because I was off put from the design and I didn’t want to bother learning how it worked.
Then I bit the bullet about 10-15 quests later and learned it was way simpler than I expected.
I was fully prepared to ignore them until the optimized quest guide kept pushing them lol

I've always wanted to write up a suggestion for a new fairy tale quest centered around running out of fairy codes, and there's an overflow error in the interface causing a letter to duplicate:

Yeah hard no to another wheel, I aint re-memorizing codes
Adding a fifth mushroom to each wheel makes more sense, it increases the total of combinations from 64 to 125, that's more than plenty

you mean like a map interface specifically for fairy rings or the actual game map?
8

Either would be cool with me! It's tough remembering every random assortment of letters lol. I know where all locations on the map are a lot better.
7
u/oOSaFiOo 2376 5d ago
the main problem with this would be that theres way more fairy rings than any other teleport system thus the map would look bloated.

I'm fine with adding the rest of the letters, but they should keep the selection more diegetic than a green highlight and having the selection somehow duplicated to the center

8
u/Vivactus 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yes please. I hate the idea of them adding a 4th code.
Even just adding a 5th letter to each wheel takes us from 64 to 125 codes. There is no reason to change All of them for an additional 200. It’s not like we’re going to 4x the osrs world map anytime soon lol
8
u/FalsifyTheTruth 5d ago
Honestly, it feels like this the way they intended for it to expand. Why else would they leave letters between the groups?
The only notable downside is that a 4th ring of 4 gives more space than 3 rings of 5 or 6. But unless Jagex goes fucking hard with new fairy rings, there's no real reason we need that many. 64 has lasted us this long. 125 or 216 would last more than long enough.

u/elongio 4d ago
63 vs 44 (44 has more possibilities).
A 4th ring would be bananas, especially on mobile.
Keeping the letters upright is definitely a QOL that should have happened. You can have rotating circles with more than 4 letters.
With the new design having the letters in the middle is pointless, reduces readability, and increases mental load. Having the letters be highlighted in a different color is much better.
The rotating speed is much nicer from before but still feels like a slog in my opinion.

thank you! and for sure i feel like adding a fourth wheel will inevitably be a real annoyance having to rotate between 4 letters 4 times.
6
u/ConditionSmooth9086 5d ago
I could imagine the 4 nodes on each wheel being directly tied to the rng of something like the rate of getting a tome of fire, and them switching it up to 6 nodes a wheel makes the tome of fire start being rewarded almost everytime or something crazy.
I like this idea, and im tickled pink thinking of allll the things that could go wrong should they adopt it.
4
u/FinalSever 5d ago
My only thought is that the 4 wheel might allow for some fairy rings to be locked behind the quest. Perhaps more powerful ones? I could envision the fourth wheel having a “-“ or blank to not ruin the current codes but would allow for 4 combination ones if you included z to bjsz or something

I like the mushrooms on the wooden wheels lining up behind the wooden board with the little glass viewing holes, looks like a weird fairy contraption and is very osrs.
The proposed one here is simpler and more functional but it loses something, it's a good concept but would need to fit the original theme I think. Maybe a single wooden monocle with a glass insert that rotates around the rings and highlights the selected letter.

Just need a high and low frequency lever in the menu. Low frequency would be default and all the old codes would be the same. Click high frequency and you have can now use all the old codes for new locations

u/Zacflame The Torchbearer 5d ago
I don't think this is better than adding a 4th wheel.
The only thing I think better than a 4th wheel would be a simple switch or button that has to be "turned on" for just the second generation of fairy rings. The downside is that that only doubles the potential code pool, opposed to a 4th ring's quadrupling. However, I'd be shocked if we ever get to the point where we more than double our fairy ring count in the next 25 years.

It's not a complex solution, if expanding the network is what we want to do. Or perhaps another transport method would be more interesting.

u/BioMasterZap 5d ago
I like it and think it would be better to add more to existing wheels than a fourth wheel. But I kinda would miss the rotary dialing... Maybe there could be a toggle or something. Or just keep the rotary dialing but allow key input or such to bypass it, similar to have favorites already work.

I had always assumed the fairy ring system was meant to be a reference to dialling an address in Stargate.
The 8th and 9th symbols of a Stargate address add additional distance calculations, like an extra area code of a telephone number.
The “joys of a fourth wheel” may then be a reference to the rings being able to access a new type of destination, ones that are potentially even further away or in another dimension.
I thought this lore/story hint might be what was being teased, but I don’t think the community has cottoned on to the Stargate reference.

Question for those of you that also have the Lunby elite diary done ;
If they do end up implementing the change to no longer needing the elite diary done (which is gatekept by the quest cape) to travel fairy rings without a dramen staff and gaining the perk once completing fairy tale 3, would you like to see changes to the elite lumby diary rewards? Drakan and dt2 bosses basically gatekeep alot of players from finishing this diary. Along with it getting harder and harder to get the cape in general with all the new quests coming in to the game.
Point being, if they do make it so you no longer need the elite diary done to gain the perk they should REALLY re think the rewards for the diary imo. Otherwise theres no incentive to get the diary done besides the diary cape.
