Question The graveyard is getting a little full

Post image

RIP
8 printers (p1s, p2s, x1, h2s) with issues ranging from snapped belts to busted eddy sensors to i don’t even remember.
If you’re in or around atlanta and can fix these i would pay ya, think they are probably all decently easy fixes i just lack the time and patience atm but id love to have them back up and running in my farm, lmk!

What the hell, do you buy a whole new printer if you get an issue or something?

1.1k

u/Sardonislamir Sep 16 '26

All evidence points to... "snapped belts" as a reason... Like wtf.

400

u/lumifox Sep 16 '26

I watched a video reciently of a company in china making porotypes for magnet style belts because their like 200+bambulabs print farm were all dying from snapped belts, the tech seemed really interested. Probbly not an issue for regular users but if they're on printing 24/7 its going to be a major wearing part

154

u/fumar Sep 16 '26

Do they not sell replacement belts?

213

u/lumifox Sep 16 '26

i assume so, my guess is that its such a pain in the butt to install and recalibrate that its easier to write them off or consider belt failing basically its end of life, like "the belt failed, the hot end is next" and buy a replace it with a new one

178

u/screenslaver5963 Sep 16 '26 edited Sep 17 '26

Taking a peek at the wiki, it looks annoying but not spend a couple grand on a new printer difficult.

141

u/Hasra23 Sep 16 '26

I've done it 3 times it's like 2-3 hours of really annoying work trying to get the belt around corners, takes a bit to get the hang of it but certainly not throw my printer in the bin worthy. Also once the belt are replaced they print like brand new again so you likely get another 10,000 hours out of them.

There's a way to use the old belt to pull the new one through as well but I could never get it to work.

18

u/ImShyBeKind Sep 16 '26

So how much downtime would you say it cost you, total? Like, from when it broke to when you started your next successful print? For a business, that math might work out.

40

u/exjackly Sep 16 '26

A business would probably just have a couple of ready spares, or just enlarge the active farm enough so that a down printer won't impact deadlines.

That would give the time for an employee to fix the printer and get it back online before the next printer goes down. 2-3 employee hours is going to be a cheaper than a brand new printer.

16

u/crowdedlight Sep 16 '26

Depends on the company and what you do. We have 3d printers at work but not a printfarm house. But if i have to spend 3-5 of my engineering hours on fixing it, instead of delivering on projects, the cost would be close if not the same as a new p2s etc.

Ofc we dont like waste and our higher end printers also cheaper to fix unless full rebuilds. So we tend to repair as long as we can. But pure economy-wise we probably sometimes spend more on hours fixing than buying a new one. 😅 Especially when our bottleneck mostly is time and not cost.

It’s probably one of those things which is worth doing if it’s your personal printer, but takes enough time and effort that it’s not really worth the time for a print farm which runs the machines into the ground, and for which the printer has probably already paid for itself and then some. Once one thing goes wrong, it also probably means that other things will go wrong soon as well so it’s less of a drain to just replace the thing instead of having to worry about constant maintenance.

15

u/the_lamou Sep 16 '26

A belt snapping is not "something went wrong," it's a standard wear item with a fixed life that takes about an hour to replace once you've done a few. Which is cheaper: a new printer or an hour of technician time?

5

u/LowSkyOrbit Sep 16 '26

I ran a few high speed (2D) printers around 20 years ago. If a machine went down do did half of production, but we had techs who would be there within 4 hours and a new machine within 48 hours if they couldn't easily fix, and these machines came on pallets. Standard maintenance was quarterly and scheduled typically around slower days of the week. Roller and gear replacement happened often and I spent so much time with those machine I knew every tick.

3D printing doesn't have a whole industry of repairmen running around in trucks with spare parts or the ability to overnight parts from central warehouses. It's easier to just pull a machine and replace. These farms might make their money back in a few days or even hours. The broken machine can be sold as-is or held for spare parts.

They do. I've done belt replacements a couple times on my P1S printers. It is a super simple procedure, it's just very time consuming because you have to remove all the side panels to access the idlers and route the belts properly.

8

u/MzunguMjinga Voron 2.42r2, Voron Switchwire, AM8 Sep 16 '26

It's the same on voron core xy printers, but we built ours down to the last nut so we know how to fix them. The belts are still a pain.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/Nervous-History8631 Sep 16 '26

They do, but the problem is time not access.

In a print farm when a printer goes down that is however long it takes you to notice and then effect repairs that it isn't printing. The question becomes is it more cost effective to just make your own more durable belt and replace it once than it is to replace it every time

You talking about the Lightmake L4? Uses linear motors. Looks potentially pretty sweet.

3

u/RobotToaster44 Sep 16 '26

I have a daisy wheel printer from the 80s that uses linear motors, I'm surprised they aren't more common.

4

u/lumifox Sep 16 '26

yeah that was the one!, couldnt remember its name

7

u/tk-093 Sep 16 '26

It has potential. There are a few YouTubers who have had some demo models, though I think the last ones I saw they were still only allowed to print things that were pre-loaded on the machine, so I don't think the software is there yet, but am looking forward to it eventually coming out.

the one with the snapped belt had something like 10,000 hours on it in all fairness, 3 of them (p2s and h2s) are giving a bad eddy sensor error but replacing that hasn’t fixed it so assuming it’s a board issue. it’s not like i just said “ah fuck this i’ll just buy another” i did at least give them a try but to keep up the farm i bought a replacement and then kinda just let em collect dust bc yea idk we busy

14

u/Hasra23 Sep 16 '26

Oh I know the eddy sensor error, the nozzle was sitting too close on my h2s. Just unscrew the hotend assembly 3 screws behind the nozzle and then tighten the 4 screws on the back and give everything a good clean out with compressed air put it all back together and should work fine

35

u/ImponteDeluxo Sep 16 '26

I can understand now, downtime is unacceptable and sometimes it's just way cheaper to just buy a whole new shiny machine that troubleshoot an used one for hours.

6

u/porkyminch Bambu X1C Sep 16 '26

Honestly, nothing wrong with that as long as you make an effort to get the busted machines to people who will fix them and use them.

3

u/KorayA Sep 16 '26

Someone in the comments said you are in Dayton. My son goes to the Dayton STEM school and they have a print lab with really old makerbots. If you aren't up for fixing these and would like to donate them, I'd love to fix them up for the school. They would be incredibly appreciative.

10

u/Ceros007 Sep 16 '26

Joking aside I'm sure some people do this for real. When Vinfast opened here, I suddenly started to see a lot of their SUV around. Then only a few months after, they are mostly all gone. Is it because it's a crappy car and they all broke or people just like to try new cars for a few months then change to something else

7

u/say592 Sep 16 '26

Vinfast had a subscription program where you could lease it with insurance for shorter periods of time.

This is more akin to a company buying a new forklift because the old one had a hydraulic malfunction. Their mechanic is backlogged, and the local repair company said they can see it in a month. Since you need the forklifts to run the company, the obvious solution is to buy another forklift, and fix the old one when you can.

Broken hardware don't make money.

I don't know about you but every time my Bambu does a print that has a small defect, I chuck that b*tch in the pile and crack open a new box.

13

u/screenslaver5963 Sep 16 '26

Last time a print detached from the bed, I said fuck it and burned my house down using the A1 as a flame thrower

7

u/NotReallyJohnDoe Sep 16 '26

I’m addicted to first prints so I just do one print per new printer and then throw them away.

94

u/Shritties-69 Sep 16 '26

we have 30 active rn, my business grew really really fast and tbh i’ve just said “ill fix this later” a few (roughly 7) too many times

89

u/CeeMX Sep 16 '26

Just sell them on eBay for cheap, someone will be happy to make a good deal any you don’t have to worry about them anymore

20

u/Federal_Sympathy4667 Sep 16 '26

Hell.. I'd snap one up cheap from that lol

14

u/Sneet1 Sep 16 '26

they're posting this here to do the even simpler thing (local pickup), ebay for something like this is a hassle if you're already backlogged

6

u/JustHereForLaughs71 Sep 16 '26

They're cheap and already paid for themselves. Donate them or sell them as is for a significantly reduced price for those willing to fix them. I bet you can make a school or a poor kid with a screwdriver and some time very happy.

5

u/Constant-Hat-3193 Sep 16 '26

Most of us wont tell what our products actually are as it will potentially lead to additional competition in that niche market. While I sale alot of stuff, I have 1 item that sells better than others. It doesnt sell enough to create a print farm and quit my job but its enough to fund the hobby. But that 1 item that does well, is a extremly simple design that anyone can create with 0 modeling experience. As far as I know, im the only person selling this kind of item so me giving information on what it does would be shooting myself in the foot.

I agree, got to find a niche item. I have 1 item that is extremly simple and can be easily made to order by customer provided size requirement. Its not anything flashy or necessary and serves a very niche market but when people understand its uses they love it.

When print time is money it is more efficient to buy a new printer than have one printer down for a day.

Although at least get it fixed, more print time = more money.

5

u/JaceOnRice Sep 17 '26

The company I work for sells $100,000-$500,000 3d printers

Sales are hurting right now. I think a lot of people are just buying Bambus and if it breaks they buy a new one. They can buy 1000 Bambus for the price of one of ours.

It sucks, and the $100k printer is significantly better but yeah If you got the kind of money for that level of printer, proper. You can kind of just throw them out when instead of working on them if there's any issues

2

u/ImponteDeluxo Sep 17 '26

What the fuck that printer can do for half a million that a very fancy H2D or U1 can't do?

3

u/JaceOnRice Sep 17 '26

Run nonstop for 1-2 years with almost zero maintenance, and the dimensional stability is within 0.005" no matter where you put the part on the build plate

Also, size

It's for companies that are making production end-use parts and need reliability over anything else

Parts are also significantly stronger due to the thermal control

Stratasys did it first, everybody is trying to copy Stratasys.

Source - I run these printers every day

Sure, I have my gripes, but a bambu can't fully replace it. The parts are that much better. But hey, not everyone can afford that, and bambu gets you pretty close for a lot of use cases

4

u/by_ALXNDR Sep 16 '26

If my employer told me to get a 3D printer functioning again I'd probably just tell them to buy a new one. These are under $1000 printers. This depends entirely on how much your time is worth.

3

u/JCDU Sep 16 '26

In business it can be cheaper to buy a new one than pay someone's hourly rate to mess about trying to fix them.

Let the old ones be someone else's cheap easy fix or parts donor.

if i threw them away yea but like i held on to them to be repaired so not really

47

u/TraditionalSeat Sep 16 '26

I'm just teasing. I run a 50-printer farm myself and can totally see myself doing the same thing, replacing snapped belts is no fun on those. That's actually a big reason my farm is only bed slingers, better repairability. But it's not without its tradeoffs of course.

6

u/GenJohnnyRico Sep 16 '26

I'm new to the hobby, what do print farmers do with all those machines?

6

u/Confident_Cheetah_30 Sep 16 '26

Someone's gotta print all those dragons for America's farmer's markets and craft shows.

25

u/Shritties-69 Sep 16 '26

everyone does something different! for us, we sell to an extremely niche DIY community online, mostly generate revenue through instagram, and have over 250 different SKUs available to the general public as well as a pretty busy customs side to the business.

6

u/sharkbait-oo-haha Sep 16 '26

Where do you sell to do that kinda volume? I've been selling on eBay myself but even hitting 200pcs per sku per year is a hell of a feat on eBay.

Also, how many printers are you running to trash this many? If your farm is 10 printers, 8 is concerning, if it's 100, 8 is a rounding error.

10

u/Shritties-69 Sep 16 '26

we only have 30 printers we are def still a baby farm, but this time last year we had 8, some of them now sitting in this room, so this expansion all happened crazy fast. sales are mostly from our website, traffic driven from social mostly but a good chunk is search, and that’s growing as we expand our options.

3

u/sharkbait-oo-haha Sep 16 '26

What's your customer acquisition costs like on social?

You say you have 250skus, is that mostly from colour variations? Do you find customers care about colour options? Personally 80% of my sales are black, which I find to be exceptionally boring, but despite offering a dozen colours, people still go for black. Once my current colours run out I'm just sticking to black.

8

u/captain_carrot Sep 16 '26

Not OP but I have my own shop as well - I usually stick to a specific color palette of a few basic colors I always keep on hand and maybe a few special variations for specific products, but black is always king. It's much easier tracking and ordering inventory by sticking with specific colors then just offering 20+ options for everything. I also make listing photos for each specific color and not just showing swatches, so that simplifies things a bit as well.

I understand the business side - it's cheaper to replace whole priter than have it offline for one day + spend your hour rate on fixing it. This is massive loss for busy print farm. However, as a hobbyist I wouldn't mind to get them and fix it :D

15

u/Cultural_Pace4454 Sep 16 '26

That's only true if they can somehow source a new printer in under an hour, including unboxing and setting up, vs having some spare parts on hand and making repairs.

9

u/mr_joda Sep 16 '26

u/Csspecs Sep 16 '26

If you want to run a factory you're going to need to either hire a technician or become one. The machines are cheap so it's not risky to learn on, and they have a lot of technical videos.. I found 3D printers are not super hard to repair. having fewer models is helpful, then you can stock more repair parts and it's easier to troubleshoot failures. Good screwdrivers especially a torque value screwdriver is super helpful. A good multimeter is also handy and a variable dc power supply.

I suspect independent phone repair shops might start servicing 3D printers with phone manufacturers doing more repairs/replacements themselves.

This seems like a perfect job for a student. Have you tried reaching out to local high schools, community colleges, and universities in the Atlanta area? I bet there are some students around, maybe even ones that work in campus 3D print labs, that would love to do some moon lighting to help you and get paid to do it too. I would have definitely jumped at the chance back in the day.

u/No_Distance_3320 Sep 16 '26

Is this why all the 3d printers at microcenter Atlanta are always gone? 😔

4

u/lewisbv Sep 16 '26

I’m a student at Georgia tech, if you’re interested in selling broken for cheaper ish lmk

So I have had my Prusa MK3s+ since it was a Prusa MK3

Maybe vary up your brand loyalty? they dont seem very loyal to you

8

u/Shritties-69 Sep 16 '26

i’ve been thinking about it for sure!

2

u/Syyx33 Sep 16 '26

Something to be said about Prusa reliability and repairability. There is a reason that there are still print farms running MK3s. They long-term test their machines in their own farm.

Their machines come with quite a price tag though.

u/dlaz199 Voron 2.4 300, Ender 3Some, Kobra 2 Maximized Sep 16 '26

For a business I would just sell them as for repair at a fair price. Time is money and time spent fixing these of it's not a simple fix is probably not worth it.

Bambu machines just are not designed to be quick and easy to service and repair for anything beyond simple things like blobs of doom.

It's not just them, it's pretty much every mass market machine except maybe Prusa and a few sovol models (sv08/max and sv zero, but that's because they are based on voron designs which are meant to be worked on not recommending the sovols either they have some issues that aren't worth the time unless you need something that the printer offers).

I also probably would not use bambus in my business but that's because I don't like how the company operates and treats the community, not because they make a bad machine. I also don't like how chatty their machines are and I don't trust them to not lock out features for farm management unless you use their software in a future update.

u/toomuchpamplemousse Sep 16 '26

Hey u/Shritties-69 I’m in ATL and could probably fix these for you, but I just tried to send you a DM and it didn’t work. Do you have an email I could send my contact info to?

3

u/Big-Contribution3970 Sep 16 '26

As someone who hates to see tech go to waste... this make me sad.
As someone who owns 4 resin printers and 2 fdm printers and has only had 2 working printers the last 4 months. I understand completely.

3

u/Crazypete3 Sep 16 '26

I just bought a P2S, making me nervous seeing all this

3

u/Cautious_Slide Sep 16 '26

Im a little north of nashville and have a small company doing machine work out of my garage and repair work B to B. I could absolutely diagnose and repair all of these but I dont know if it would be economical given the distance. Feel free to PM me if you want an actual budget. I have an LLC and im happy to share more information privately.

9

u/ClutchDude Sep 16 '26

I believe it.

Something like a motor or some belt replacements on these can be a few hours of work.

13

u/BolunZ6 Sep 16 '26

But a few hours of work to fix a $1000 machine . It's not like $5 toys or anything. It's A FREAKING $1000 MACHINE

Well thats why I got a prusa after my first four Chinese-printers...

2

u/Karmafication Sep 16 '26

Do you have any recommendations for budget end printers? I've tinkered with my Ender 3 Pro for nearly a decade now, but I have to adjust it constantly and it makes me dread throwing prints at it.

5

u/neekthefreak Sep 16 '26

i fully believe 3d printing world should learn from automotive industry regarding belts. also 3d printer users should do the same and replace them before they snap. it would be useful to have a reminder just like printer already reminds you to oil and clean

5

u/Bkgrouch Sep 16 '26

T-Pain that you?

4

u/Daidalos117 Sep 16 '26

Bambu users are really something

4

u/Ferro_Giconi Sep 16 '26

This is wild. Deciding to not fix a printer just because of a snapped belt is like deciding a car is destined for the junkyard because one or more of the tires got a puncture.

2

u/AppalachianViking Sep 16 '26

Would to sell one?

9

u/Shritties-69 Sep 16 '26

i mean yea but like you should know they are all broken

6

u/costadeltmar Sep 16 '26

I’ll take one of your least broken please!

Can you tell us more about your business or a website? If that's not allowed, possibly dm? Interested to see what parts you're making. Sorry if that's an improper request. Nice graveyard

2

u/EasyTumbleweed4120 Sep 16 '26

I might be able to help but my schedule is booked through October 😢

2

u/NucklheadMcspazatron Sep 16 '26

I’m local and no repairman, but will take one with a snapped belt off your hands if it’s just going to sit!

2

u/Silent25r Sep 16 '26

You might want to stick with microcenter with their warranty plans. Or Best Buy tech package. For you they make sense.

2

u/jayH4103 Sep 16 '26

Woukd you be interested in selling them as a lot ? Im about 2 hours away and would buy them all

2

u/Shritties-69 Sep 16 '26

2

No hope of warranty repair?

2

u/RainingTacos8 Sep 16 '26

Bros stacking printers like I have filament spools

2

u/Confident_Celery_237 Sep 16 '26

I live in macon south of you. I currently repair all series of: Bambu labs, Creality, Egloo etc. I can come by to take a look. Service fee to look and assess is $150 flat if on the other side of atlanta. That includes a $25 dollar atlanta fee.

Let me know i can get you my price book and previous invoices if you want to take a look. It is inclusive of parts costs/labor with receipts of purchased OEM items.

2

u/zealeus Sep 16 '26

If you’re serious - Atlanta has a few maker spaces in town. They all do 3d printing. I imagine you could reach out to them.

2

u/MeMTDude Sep 16 '26

Nowhere close, and don’t really know how to fix them, but my poor autistic brain saw the post and photo and went. “Ooh… I kinda wanna take one apart 👉👈”

2

u/notquitesanity Sep 16 '26

I’m in North Atlanta and use a couple of X1Cs to make parts for robotics prototypes. I've been repairing mine for years. I have a bunch of time on my hand right now and I’d be interested in helping you get them triaged and bring the viable ones back online.

I’m comfortable with the common mechanical and sensor issues—belts, motion-system faults, and the eddy-sensor side of things. I could come by, inventory them, separate the quick fixes from the parts-donor candidates, and repair the worthwhile ones on an agreed hourly basis.

If you’re interested, send me a DM with your general area and a few more photos/model details.

2

u/superdad3016 Sep 16 '26

Try HAILaGEEK: Offers on-site maintenance, calibration, and repair coordination across the Atlanta metropolitan area. You can contact them at 844-432-4335.
