What does it turn in to?

That's crazy how the larva is so much bigger than even the already large beetle.
167
u/fartshitcumpiss 1d ago
Metamorphosis is a very energy-intensive process, the larva needs to be this fat to turn into a buge
56
u/Baebel 1d ago
So it's basically baby fat?
55
u/Marx_Forever 1d ago
Well, I know in the case of antlions. They don't get an anus until after they go through metamorphosis. So all of their food waste basically stays inside of their body and builds up, which is why the larva have such large abdomens right before they pupate. Then once they finally mature to their adult stage they emerge from a sludge that's basically their feces.
25
u/Mechagodzilla777 1d ago
That.. Might explain why the grub's abdomen is noticeably darker and swollen than the rest of it.

Hercules beetles are my absolute favorite
I want one as a pet one day

That’s what I wanna know, it probably turns into something pretty.

I ran into one of these on a side walk. I wish I had a way to keep him but since I knew little about how to care for him I just helped him across the road entrance before he got smashed.
They look so cool.

I absolutely despise all bugs, but the fact that the helpless, soft bodied larvae grows samarai-esque horned armor and wings is awesome.

These were so cool to find in rotting tree trunks as a kid. I'd check every one lol

u/Captain_Joseph_Money 1d ago
Rihno beetles look mad cool, but I'd like to take a moment and say I'm a big hater of the coconut rhinoceros beetle (they like to kill Pacific Island flora like coconut/palm trees and flame trees, personally witnessed at least on Guam and Oahu (Hawaii))

You're getting a lot of shaky replies, but the correct answer is that it's a Hercules Beetle!

big man. is it just me, or do insects stop being “gross” after they get to be a certain size? a big part of my fear of crawlies is that they can come from anywhere and can be hard to track, but at some point in size i feel like they are basically just a dry crab lol

u/CrossP 1d ago
Once they're big enough that they can no longer sneak into your pee hole, there's definitely a sort of plateau.
33
u/TaurineDippy 1d ago
Just because they can’t sneak into it doesn’t mean they won’t try to enter it.

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night, turning your desk light on and seeing a wolf spider the size of a pug in the middle of your floor
20
u/ExplanationHungry802 1d ago
Yeah but I feel like it passed the threshold of not creepy at dinner plate size, and then entered disturbing at dog size
18
u/Dude-Man-Bro-Guy-1 1d ago
I think speed helps as well. Larger tarantulas move (usually) fairly slow and not twitchy so they don't creep me out. But a wolf spider the size of a plate vanishing at 40mph would terrify the fuck out me

You know it's funny, I've owned multiple snakes, a chameleon, 3 tarantulas, hissing roaches, and all the "food" for the aforementioned....but I don't think I could pick that guy up lol. Something In my brain just doesn't want to.

u/devo00 1d ago
Hissing roaches? HISSING ROACHES??
You’re off my Christmas card list.9
u/Matthew-ii 1d ago
Well don't worry, they only make the Satan-borne rattlesnake sound if you pinch them, thankfully. Or poke them 😅. They are like 4 inches long though, can't change that.
7
u/saampinaali 1d ago
I don’t think my hissers got the memo. One of them likes to stand on top of the log hide and just loudly hiss in every direction for no reason

They only hiss if you stress them out (and it sounds more like a person strongly exhaling through the nose)! Compared to other roaches, they're big, slow, and clumsy. Lovely little critters and a great way to acclimate yourself to creepy crawlies!

I remember we got Madagascar hissing cockroaches a few times when I was 10 or so. I thought they were so cool. Like big shiny shells that hiss if you poke them.

I have severe arachnophobia. Completely irrational, but I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist.
I cannot be in a room with any 🕷️ the size of a computer mouse. If Its the size of a toonie or smaller. I can deal with it, big things, no, not at all.
This thing? It's cool, but I'd be wearing a glove.
7
u/radraze2kx 1d ago
That's so weird, I have arachnophobia but only when the spiders are small. Like between the size of a US Quarter and a silver dollar. I can deal with the big spiders, no problem. But if I'm walking and get some spider silk on me, I panic so bad

u/BoyMom119816 1d ago edited 1d ago
I have arachnophobia with all spiders. Nearly passed out from hyperventilating over one that was teeny tiny. Also almost wrecked over another teeny tiny one. I’m talking USA just born size spiders. Less than a kernel of rice sized.
One day, I was in my room, and something kept tickling under my shirt. Finally stood up & shook my shirt & a spider, likely a wolf spider, falls out. About the size of a quarter to 50 cent piece. I freaked out. Started vacuuming my entire room, ended up vacuuming my own hair up the vacuum, I was in such hysterics over that spider being in my room. It was a nightmare, but husband & kids thought it was hilarious with my head stuck to vacuum, hair up the bottom. Grr.
Also scared of snakes & pretty much any creepy crawly. Have two sons though, so have had to have a tarantula, snake, etc. as pets. :-/ grrr. Refuse to feed them or deal with them, but also broke my heart when my son was sold an unhealthy neonate and I could not save the snake’s life, even though I tried. So guess I’m a bit of a hypocrite. Really don’t want to kill or see anything die, just don’t want them near me.

Verified boy mom 💐💐
2
u/BoyMom119816 11h ago
This is what I meant with username. Sadly, I learned about the negative boymoms who condone everything their kids do. With the boys will be boys. And other disgusting shit. I wish I had known about those boymoms, had more creativity, and/or could change my username. But I literally just thought it meant I was a mom with boys and because of that, I constantly had loud, dirt, mud, bugs, & other creepy crawlies, I would prefer not dealing with and most can’t imagine me dealing with. But have to deal with, because of my sons.

I thought I was good because when I was younger a friend put her full grown tarantula in my hands and I handled it fine, if a little terrified to hurt it when it started walking up both my arms at the same time since I was doing the cupping gesture. Then maybe 15 years later as an adult I purchased a baby birdeater and it started so small and cute and grew so fast and it's legs were too long for its body. I'm better now but I think that's really just hardwired in the monkey brain lol.

Insects and arachnids are the only members of the animal kingdom whose baby stage is not cuter than the adult stage.
