90's/00's TV show that ended with a native American sign saying "how" ?

I have a vivid memory of a TV show growing up where the show ended with the hosts holding their hand up and saying "how" in unison. My Mrs thinks I'm crazy and I can't find anything online but it's so vivid.

Does anyone else remember this? I think it was a science programme...

I hate how everyone is forgetting Gareth Jones!

42

u/gigohuguglbkv 10h ago

When he was on Shooting Stars, Bob Mortimer called him Gaz Top.

He replied “My friends call me Gareth” to which Bob came back with “Really? So, Gaz…”

u/Namelessbob123 10h ago

Gaz Top is a legend and so is his ex-wife Violet Berlin

22

u/blinky84 10h ago

They divorced?? Violet Berlin was a legend, always used to play as her in Micro Machines 2

Christ, what a blast from the past double combo in one post!

u/adymann 7h ago

I first remember gaz top on Saturday mornings watching GET FRESH, with Gilbert the alien.

u/Development-Regular 1h ago

He used to present a music show in the 80s and he was a bit of a twat tbh

u/OkAdhesiveness166 6h ago

“Do you like camping, Gaz?”

2

u/CrabbyGremlin 10h ago

Who is that in the middle?

36

u/EducationSuperb3392 10h ago

The legend that is Carol Vorderman

3

u/CrabbyGremlin 9h ago

I thought so! What a woman she is.

2

u/ceehred 6h ago

Wow. I'm old enough to remember How, but forgot it must have been where I most knew her from!

How2

That's how for now

3

u/LittleSadRufus 7h ago

The spiritual successor to Take Nobody's Word for it, which was also hosted by Vorderman as well as the wonderful Ian Fells, and (in one episode which now feels like a fever dream) the PM at the time, drawing on her chemistry training.

21

u/AdhesivenessLost151 7h ago

And the literal successor to How, which was broadcast from 1966 to 1981.

How 2 first aired in 1990

How 2.

I think it was called HOW 2

46

u/steveakacrush 9h ago

The original show was just called How, it was reinvented in the 80's/90's with How2.

17

u/OldLondon 8h ago

Killing me that everyone’s saying How2

26

u/LittleSadRufus 7h ago

OP was asking about a show from the 1990s/2000s, so no surprise people aren't saying it was How, which was mostly 1960s/1970s.

15

u/OldLondon 7h ago

Let us old farts have a moment

8

u/steveakacrush 8h ago

The Reddit demographic! At least there are a few of us old gits here who remember how things used to be.

2

u/sgisbestg 8h ago

Was that with Gail McKenna?

9

u/steveakacrush 8h ago

The original? Nope that was Jack Hargreaves and Fred Dinenage.

She might have been in the reboot but I never watched it.

5

u/adymann 7h ago

Ah, jack Hargreaves, they recently rerun his old country series on the telly. Now that's nostalgia.

u/Silent_Yesterday_671 7h ago

Back in the 1970s the original Out of Town was an indelible part of my weekend 4:30 pm on a Sunday - yes I'm that old. Legend.

3

u/DuncRed 5h ago

The theme tune to Out of Town always took me to a relaxing place when I watched it. For years I wondered what the music was, and then someone invented the internet and I was able to look it up.

It was!

How 2

38

u/sgisbestg 10h ago

And that's how for now!

29

u/ConsciouslyIncomplet 10h ago

How 2 staring Carol Voderman and Fred Dingage. Used to be on CITV.

3

u/Fred776 10h ago

Fred Dinenage, but pronounced as if it was Dinage.

-3

u/2ManyTraniMods 10h ago

Was Vorderman in it? I think it was before her time. It came out in the 1970s when she woukld have been too young to appear, about in her late 60s, I'm guessing. /s

4

u/Fred776 10h ago

I remember the same one as you but there was a How 2 that came out later. I knew nothing about it until I read about it in a Reddit thread a couple of months ago. I would have been working by the time it was being shown so would never have seen it.

24

u/AdoIsOnReddit 10h ago

There was a TV show in the 70s and 80s called How. The hosts did the sign and said How at the beginning and end

8

u/BeanoMc2000 8h ago

Everyone is saying How 2 and completely forgetting the original. Maybe it is an age thing.

4

u/flummuxedsloth 7h ago

Definitely an age thing. How ran from 1966 to 1981. How 2 ran from 1990 to 2006. Given that it was a children's show, there aren't many people who will have watched both versions.

1

u/gameofgroans_ 6h ago

I’m in my 30’s and never knew it was How2 just How. We used to watch it in science class just assumed it was all one show

26

u/gerrineer 10h ago

Well the original was called How!

19

u/No_Star_7408 10h ago

How 2

They held up their hands in a 'native American sign'. Absolutely How 2.

17

u/eastkent 10h ago

The original was called How. It was created by Jack Hargreaves and if you've never heard of him please go and look for Out of Town on YouTube. You'll never watch anything more charming and peaceful.

12

u/PipBin 10h ago

Jack was my grandad’s fishing pal. He lived in the next village and they would fish together on the river that ran through grandad’s farm.

5

u/hazel_swift 9h ago

Oh wow! My great grandparents had a farm in Dorset too.

3

u/PipBin 9h ago

Where in Dorset?

2

u/Jay_CD 6h ago

Jack Hargreaves lived in a village called Belchalwell which is tiny - maybe around 60-70 people? And maybe a couple of dozen houses and a few farms. It's part of Okeford Fitzpaine's parish.

1

u/eastkent 7h ago

I think their kind are a dying breed. They may already be pretty much extinct, sadly.

10

u/BlueHairThomski 10h ago

Carol Vorderman was my 90s lesbian crush 😂

9

u/St2Crank 9h ago

As if you still haven’t got a crush on Vorderman

9

u/TulipTattsyrup99 10h ago

I remember How from 1966. Jack Hargreaves (sucking on his pipe), Bunty Gunn, Jon miller and Fred Dinage. They always ended the show making the “How” sign, which was probably meant to be a Red Indian greeting, which you probably can’t even say now.

-3

u/RenRu 9h ago

Probably because it's the wrong term?

I would love to call "apples" butt fruits but ain't nobody calling them that

12

u/mintfreshAD 9h ago

No, because obviously peaches are the butt fruit

-8

u/2ManyTraniMods 10h ago

They would all be arrested and jailed now with the Guardian writing an op-ed beginning 'Why oh why can't these racists be enucleated in public?'.

0

u/TulipTattsyrup99 9h ago

I probably should have said Native American to be PC, but in 1966 there was no PC.

7

u/ARobertNotABob 9h ago

Yep, How was a legit and awesome British show, Fred Dineage did the weird and wonderful, Jack Hargreaves did the country & craft stuff (adjacent to his own series Out Of Town) Jon Miller did science stuff, and Bunty Gunn, who did...I don't remember what.

3

u/1234onions 9h ago

How 2. It was an educational programme on CITV that answered questions beginning with the word How.

3

u/EVRider81 9h ago

The show was called "How", the team would explain concepts and give answers to questions sent in to the studio. Basically doing what google does now.. I remember Jack Hargreaves was one of the presenters, and the Native American themed theme tune...

2

u/LiamJonsano 9h ago

Fred was still doing the hand signal whenever he signed off from ITV Meridian for the decades he was doing that job too

2

u/thecoop_ 7h ago

How 2

2

u/patterfloof 7h ago

If you remember this, you may remember Johnny Ball Reveals All. He disappeared from telly & his daughter, Zoe, became a Radio 1 & 2 presenter.

1

u/papercut2008uk 9h ago

HOW 2?

It was a kids show on how stuff worked or how to make things etc.

There are episodes on Youtube and they do the hand thing on a lot of them, Not sure about later episodes but they defiantly done it on the older episodes.

1

u/AxisOfAverage 9h ago

I remember Fred Dineage presenting How in the 70s/80s and then there was a newer one (How 2 I think) that had Gaz Top and Carol Vorderman presenting alongside Dineage. I seem to think there might have been a former Page 3 girl somewhere in the mix as well.

1

u/Vorpeseda 9h ago

Oh that brings back memories!

But I somehow forgot that it was How 2. I just remembered it as How.

Pretty sure all the segments were about questions beginning with "how", such as "how can you lie on a bed of nails?"

I think I had a book related to the show as well.

1

u/nomiselrease 9h ago

And that's how, for now!

1

u/nomiselrease 8h ago

A further reboot in 2020 on CITV with Fred Dinenage appearing aside from the main cast as the man upstairs. I used to watch the 90's one, enjoyed it very much.

1

u/LeftHandDriveBoC 8h ago

They probably do, they probably go “How the bloody hell are we supposed to eat that hedgehog?”

1

u/peanutbudderlover 8h ago

Fred Dinenage is on tour right now doing a show about the Krays if that's if any interest?

1

u/_Daftest_ 7h ago

It was called How and it was much longer ago than you think

1

u/lovesorangesoda636 6h ago

How 2!

Fucking loved that show. It's the reason I know to swirl liquid coming out of a bottle if you want it to empty faster and how to put a duvet cover on!

1

u/wubalubalubdub 4h ago

And that’s how, for now.

1

u/No_Translator_361 3h ago

I know the show, I watched it.

But where what the native American?! 😂

1

u/CosmicBonobo 3h ago

Fun Fact: Fred Dinenage was the Kray Twins ghostwriter on their autobiographies.
