It's past time we added more members to the mod team

We’re looking to add a couple of new people to the mod team here at r/babybumpsandbeyondau.

The current mod team isn't going anywhere. We’ll still be around and involved, but our kids are getting older and, as a result, we’re not quite as "in the trenches" with pregnancy, babies and the early years as we once were.

The subreddit is still a community we care a lot about, though, and we’d like to bring a few people onto the team who are a bit more actively in that stage of life and can help us keep an eye on things day to day.

We’re not necessarily looking for people with a long list of previous moderating experience. If you've never moderated a subreddit before, that's completely fine. So if you find yourself nap trapped and scrolling through reddit for hours on end, you might be just the right fit. What matters more to us is that you're a regular member of the community, understand what makes this subreddit a good place to be, and can be fair and sensible when dealing with people and situations that aren't always straightforward.

We're ideally looking for people who;

  • Are reasonably active around the subreddit
  • Have a good understanding of the Australian pregnancy/baby/parenting experience
  • Are comfortable enforcing the rules when needed
  • Can be fair and level-headed, even when dealing with disagreements
  • Are happy to work as part of the existing mod team
  • Have the time to check in on the subreddit regularly

Previous mod experience is a bonus, but definitely not a requirement. If you'd like to be considered, send the mod team a modmail and tell us a little about yourself, including:

How long you've been part of r/babybumpsandbeyondau

Why you'd like to become a moderator

Whether you've moderated anywhere before

Roughly how often you're on Reddit

Anything else you think you'd bring to the team

There's no need to write a huge application — we're really just interested in getting to know you a little and seeing whether you'd be a good fit for the team.

We'll have a chat with the people we're interested in and go from there.

And of course, thanks to everyone who continues to contribute to the subreddit, answer questions, share your experiences and generally make this a great community. We really do appreciate it!

(This was typed on my phone in the middle of the night, so apologies if the formatting is a bit weird, I promise I'll look at it in the morning and fix it if need be).

MOD POST - Inappropriate Private Messages

A quick reminder about private messages

We’ve had a few reports recently of members receiving inappropriate or unwanted private messages from other members.

If you receive a private message that makes you uncomfortable, is inappropriate, or crosses a line, please message the moderators and let us know. If you can, include the username of the person who sent it and a screenshot of the message.

We can’t see private messages between members, so unless someone tells us about it, we may have no idea that it’s happening.

Please don’t feel like you’re making a fuss by reporting it. We’d much rather know about it so we can keep an eye on the situation and, if someone is repeatedly behaving inappropriately towards members, take action and ban them from the community.

You can also block the user

If you don't want the person to be able to contact you again, you can block them.

  • Go to the person's profile.
  • Click or tap the ... menu.
  • Select Block account and confirm.

You can also block someone directly from a private message by using the Block option on the message/conversation.

Please remember to let the moderators know as well, even if you have blocked the person. Blocking stops them from contacting you, but it doesn't let us know there's a potential issue or give us the opportunity to look into whether they're doing the same thing to other members.

Thanks everyone. We want this to be a friendly and welcoming community, and we appreciate you helping us keep it that way.

Have you spared a thought for your pelvic floor?

Hey guys.

Did you know that in France the government covers pelvic floor physio for women after they give birth? Cool huh.

Put pelvic floor health on your radar. These babes can do a number on us. Many women don't know that pelvic floor physios are a thing and they are excellent.

In light of all the Jackie Lambie stuff going on, I bought one of her vagina theme coffee mugs. I'm a sonographer, so I'll take it into work. "May your coffee and your pelvic floor be strong" is my brand of humour.

I can't/don't vote for her due to geography etc, but I do think her voting behaviour in Parliament checks out. ...so this doesn't need to get political, but hey, it's worth a conversation. Peeing yourself on the regular isn't normal just because you're a mum now.

Cheers.

Being pregnant in a job you’re so over is like serving the longest notice period ever

Due date April 2027, and just feel like I’m tortured by like a 4.5 month notice period. Not the best attitude to have, but I am so so done with this role. I’d have quit if I wasn’t pregnant rn! I have 4 weeks annual leave and around the same amount of time in sick leave. 12 weeks paid parental leave benefits at work. Anyone combine the leave types with their maternity leave benefits to dip early from work?! How do you do it?

Advice Wanted Does it get easier or harder to entertain them 6+ months?

Our bub is 6.5mths and not crawling yet and he is getting terribly bored. I feel like I have to go on an outing every day just for something to do otherwise he gets so whiny being cooped up.
I rotate toys and activities for him through the day but he gets sick of being inside I think. I'm making do with some park trips etc but wondering if it gets easier once they can crawl and move or if it will be the same problem?
Also I know some people will say it's ok for babies to be bored and I agree to an extent but he hits his limits and is obviously a bit young for imaginative play.

Advice Wanted Newborn dressing tips for summer

• Upvotes

Hi all, my second bub is scheduled to be evicted from the womb just before Christmas 😅 I was wondering if I could get any tips/advice on how to dress a newborn baby during summer? Do I put bub in a long-sleeve onesie as they still can’t regulate their temperature?

My eldest is a winter baby and I have no idea how to dress a newborn during the heat!

AU-NSW Orientation daycare

• Upvotes

What should I expect and look out for during orientation?

Toddler is almost 3 and has never been to daycare. She will be in 2.5 to 3.5 room. But they do mix with other ages during play times outside and family groupings.

What are some genuinely unsafe/red flag things? My mum heart is feeling very vulnerable :(

Side note our nearby preschool is very small and has barely any outdoor space so we choose long daycare centre.

Advice Wanted 17 days old Fuzzy after each feed and hard to get him to sleep

Hi All,

I am a dad of 17 days old. He last few days it's been really hard to get him to sleep after each feed. He wakes up every 1.t hours due to hunger, feeds 40 to 60ml. Most of the times he falls asleep while drinking the formula, but when we try to move him to the bassinet he wakes up and gets very hard after that to make him fall asleep. Last night I had to carry him in my arm for around 2 hours to rock him just to keep him calm. Is this expected? How to deal with this?

A friend of our suggested that we swaddle him, but he breaks out of the swaddle almost immediately.

AU-NSW SAHMs who ended up returning to work, what work are you doing?

• Upvotes

hi mums,

If you ended up returning back to work, what work did you return to? and what work were you doing before becoming a SAHM?

I hear a lot about people quitting corporate to be a SAHM and never wanting to go back to corporate again, curious to know what work you ended up doing.

thanks!

AU-QLD Birthing choices

• Upvotes

Hello! FTM mom here
I’ve been having a really rough pregnancy so far and have been classed as high-risk due to having a short cervix and needing a cerclage done, plus having not the best experience with the Drs at the hospital (public) - all I can think about is how I want to give birth.

For context, my cerclage went great and things are now looking good. But over the last few weeks since getting it done, I’ve had not the best communication from the Drs and wasn’t told that the stitch done to move my bladder out of the way would eventually come out and dissolve. That happened on Friday night and I panicked thinking it was my cerclage stitch and presented myself to PAC only to be admitted over night and not much was done to check on me. A Dr came by the next day and said that this was normal based on my post-op notes, but that no one was available to do an ultrasound or actually check me to make sure things were fine (the presenting Dr at PAC did a subpar job and ended up just clocking out without sharing any updates before leaving).
ANYWAY, I get called in this morning to get an ultrasound to check on my stitches and cervix. Was asked to wait for the Dr at MFM to talk to me about next steps, only to then be asked to check into PAC and see the Drs there instead. This turned into a 4 hour wait, with multiple nurses talking to me about potential staying over night again, preterm labor, etc etc. Finally saw a Dr who checked me over and said everything was fine and apologised for the fuck around and lack of communication

Initially I was set on requesting an elective c-section so that I get to have peace of mind knowing that this is the one thing I have control over (somewhat) but now with the lack of communication and clarity by the Drs and hearing lots of things from nurses/midwives, the thought of having to go through surgery to give birth now scares me.
But so does giving birth naturally and tearing and then needing stitches etc and I just don’t know what I want to do

Is there anything more awkward then kids birthday parties at play centers

• Upvotes

You get invited but you really don't know anyone

Your kid just walks around aimlessly and plays at the play center by themselves and you shuffle along

You make awkward small talk but most parents just are looking at their kid and in their own cliques

Half the time no one knows where everyone is in this bubble pit of screams and swear

But there is kids cake so it got it going for it

MIL saying my baby only looks like her dad makes me sad

Anyone else feel both hurt and frustrated when people insist their newborns only look like their dad?

MIL also goes on and on every time she sees my baby about how much she looks like him. Yesterday she did it again with the whole... "she looks JUST like her dad, SORRY!"

We are a mixed race couple, dad is white with blue eyes, and I'm brown skin with brown eyes. My baby has blue eyes and white skin so I get why people say she looks like dad however she also has my ears, lips and eye shape. I can see my features in her that others don't. It feels almost like they are only focused on her eyes and skin.

I wish MIL would just shut up or tone it down. My girl is half of me and I carried her for 9 months and went through a lot to have her and having someone blatantly saying she doesn't look like me hurts.

Has anyone else dealt with this? And if you did how did you handle it? I don't think MIL is trying to be nasty maybe just has no self awareness. I don't think I'd ever say that to a new mum though.

6 week US showed 'slow' heart rate

Hi everyone,

TL/DR pregnancy with 5AA euploid embryo was going well, early scan showed a slow heart rate.

For background context, I had a TFMR at 15 weeks last June (IUI) and a miscarriage in March from an untested embryo. That pregnancy started with low HCG, slightly slow heart beat and smaller than expected at 6 weeks, heart stopped by 7 weeks.

I had another transfer in September, this time with a PGT-A tested embryo. Everything was tracking really well:11dpt HCG 229, 13dpt hcg 815, 18dpt HCG 3505, 20dpt HCG 5187. Due to my pass losses, I requested early scans for assurance.

I had a scan at 6 weeks 1 day, embryo was measuring 6 weeks. We could see the heart flickering but the sonographer couldn't pick it up on the m-mode. They said it was fine, it was just too early. When speaking with the nurse through my clinic, they too said everything was fine but asked me to move my next scan sooner. I could sense something was wrong but trusted the nurses. I had an antenatal appointment booked with my GP who had a copy of the report. It said "slow heart rate, difficult to analyse." My GP has basically told me to expect a miscarriage.

I've done a lot of research and know there is a chance everything could be fine, but I also have past experience and am realistic. My breasts have gradually lost the pain. I still have nausea, but not as much. I've experience some light cramping.

It's so frustrating. I don't understand why I keep experiencing loss. Why has a 5AA euploid embryo suddenly failed?

I'm in a SS relationship and we're both about to turn 38. We've probably spent over $60k on this journey, just to experience loss and bad news.

My scan is on Thursday which will be 9 days after the first. I haven't stopped thinking about this for days and I'm so heartbroken to be back here again.

How do you just keep going on?

Seeking solidarity, advice or simply a little dark humour to lighten the mood.

I’ll preface this by saying I love my children, I love my family, I am grateful that I have this life.

But. Holy fuck.

3 year old is in full force threenager mode, has no chill and all the attitude. Almost 1 year old is in a phase of peak separation anxiety that goes beyond anything we experienced with the first. Partner and I both work full time, and the fabled village I hear of isn’t quite our experience. My extended family come to visit for a night every few months, they help entertain the Tiny Overlords and lend a hand with jobs around the house if we have time.

Everything is an uphill battle. Threenager fights us on everything! We give him the choice from options available, we warn him of transitions, we anticipate when things will set him off, explain what’s about to happen and manage accordingly. Soon-To-Be-One isn’t satisfied with close proximity, or even sitting side by side with physical touch; she must be held or she screams relentlessly. Both sleep independently until about 10pm, at which point they come to the big bed. Any and all attempts to resettle them to their own beds lead to several hours of battle with no sleep for anyone, so I caved and accepted the co-sleeping. I’m now in physical contact with one or both of them for the majority of the time we spend together. My brief reprieve is between 8pm-10pm, when I’m catching up on work, getting the house work/life admin done, or getting a shower in.

Weekdays are 6am - 8am getting the kids and myself ready, I work 8.30 - 4.30/5, and evenings with the kids are 5.15 - 7.30/8. Weekends are a marathon.

My partner and I haven’t exchanged a conversation beyond bare minimum logistics in months. Conceiving Soon-To-Be-One was the last time we had any form of physical intimacy. A part of me misses our adult relationship, but mostly I’m too exhausted to have any interest. He’s just as exhausted and not making any efforts, either.

Attempts to schedule a date night or an evening ‘off’ together have almost always ended in either the sitter being sick, or the kids/us being sick. Instead, we alternate patches of time where one of us gets to run errands solo or attend a social event while the other stays home. Partner will take the Threenager out, but generally won’t leave the house with both kids on his own. My downtime at home, if they go out, is still with the baby.

We’re exhausted. We’re moody. We’re short and snappy. There has to be something we can do to get on top of this shitshow. Advice, ideas, dry humour - all is welcome. Please give me a shred of optimism.

AU-SA Swimming lessons

What are we wearing to swimming lessons? My son has his first lesson this Friday and all I have at the moment is a pair of piece bathers. Are we wearing board shorts and a top? Do we wear a rash vest? I’m so confused as I’ve seen a lot of conflicting information.

Advice Wanted FTM car seats and prams - what is worth considering?

Hello, I am very lost on car seats and prams, would be grateful for any advice from more seasoned parents than I am. I am a FTM and expecting in April 2027.

When looking at car seats my preference is for a rotating convertible car seat, something like the Nuna Rylo 360 Convertible Car Seat Caviar. I like the rotating seat and I like that it lasts up to 4yo.

However, I also like the idea of the convenience of being able to transfer your baby from car seat to pram. I would have to sacrifice the rotating car seat if I priortise this.

My question is, which should I be priortising? I feel like the window of time the car seat to pram situation is going to benefit us is very small, or is it something that truly makes a difference?

Similarly, is my rotating car seat something that's just not worth it?

Or have I got my priorities all wrong... I am open to any advice I'm truly clueless haha

If it's helpful, I'm interested in the iCandy Peach 7 Pram

Thanks in advance

AU-NSW Baby recommendations please! All welcome!

Hi everyone ☺️ I’ll be a first time mum early next year and I am starting to gather some “must have” items for baby! Any advice on the perfect all-round carrier to purchase? I’ve heard good things about the Mumma etc. brand. Also, is the baby bjorn bouncer worth the hype? I keep wondering if it’s just another big ticket brand item or it’s actually special in some way? 😆 any and all recommendations and advice welcome.
