Nature Rain Above water vs under water

Calm and quiet on top and underneath it's like a thousand tiny bullets hitting the surface.

Every time someone brings up Matt Damon in conversation around me, I instinctively yell “MATT DAMON” like from the movie 😂

Used to dive/snorkel in the rain, always felt the opposite to me. Rain and chaos above, peace and quite below.

u/leventp 6d ago
Why is that video vertical? 🥴
54
u/kenerling 6d ago
Cellphone mentality.

u/TheRussness 6d ago
Well reddit users are 78% mobile and 22% desktop
So yeah. Cater to the larger audience.

Phones can be turned sideways. They even have accelerometers in them for that purpose.
12
u/GregTheMad 6d ago
Yeah, but this video only works if you start it in portrait, then switch to landscape, and only if you have said accelerometers ignored (auto-rot turned off).

u/cosmolitano 6d ago
vertical video syndrome
29
u/vajayjaysniffer 6d ago
We spent years bullying people to film landscape just for tiktok to reverse our work

u/Past_Paint_225 6d ago
I'm not turning my phone, this to me is how the video creator wanted me to watch their video and it's crap this way

Genuinely curious if in all my years on reddit I've ever been in a single comment section where "everybody else is way dumber than I am" wasn't a top comment🤔

But..this is dumb?
6
u/HEX_BootyBootyBooty 6d ago
The video changes orientation. Above water is normal, when mc goes below, it's widescreen and you have to turn your phone (and turn off auto-orientation) to view proper.
2
u/Same_Square2555 6d ago
how is making vertical videos dumb bro😭
7
u/SirSitsOnAss 6d ago
No video could have been improved by being filmed vertically.
Every video filmed vertically could have been improved filming horizontally instead.
How are vertical videos not dumb?
→ More replies (11)2
u/ipokesnails 6d ago
In many cases filming vertically necessitates constant, rapid horizontal camera panning because it's not practical to capture the scene properly while filming in portrait.

i figured the best move would be not to comment
but then nobody would know I was here. If I didn't comment, was I really here? It's a fallen tree in the woods kinda situation.

Actually, it is Wakulla Springs in Wakulla County Florida.
edit: it does in fact look that way under water
5
u/HikerStout 6d ago
The swimmable area of Wakulla Springs isn't rocky like that. It's sand and a whole ton of grasses. I've been swimming in that area for 30+ years.
If you pause right before they go under water, that's also not remotely what the beach area looks like at the park.

The above water shot is definitely from Wakulla Springs, FL. The water is incredibly clear and blue on a sunny day, and if you look just behind him before he films underwater, you can see a flash of blue-green below the surface. I used to live down the road and swam there many times, I can believe the underwater shot is the same place.

I was once scuba diving in Thailand in heavy rain, it's quite a wonderful sight when looking up, and the contrast between the surface and down below is somerhing else.
72
u/BongofromPatreon 6d ago
Sometimes I think the worst thing about the younger generations is that they see everything in portrait rather than landscape.
It's just a patently stupid aspect ratio.
8
u/ThunderShott 5d ago
Its not like we have a choice because a lot of companies only allow portrait videos and everyone annoyingly records that way.
→ More replies (2)5
u/little_turd1234 6d ago
To be fair there are plenty of types of content where a portrait aspect ratio is fine or even better. If the video is just someone talking to the camera chances are it’ll frame up a lot better in a portrait orientation unless they are being very expressive with their hands and you need the extra width.
I agree it gets over used but just wholesale writing off the entire aspect ratio is a little silly

u/username_elephant 5d ago
Yeah. Like all those old portraits should just be fucking burned in a pyre because the painters were too stupid to paint them in landscape.

u/DragonStangFlyer122 6d ago
Honest question, do fish care at all if it's raining? Does rain affect their behavior in any way?
9
u/CosmonautMott 6d ago
Do you start destroying your livingroom when it hits the roof of your home? Jokes aside, no its like a normal thing for them. Some are more active.

The music kills it. Just let us hear the rain hitting the surface.
4
u/Jadema80 5d ago
I think it adds to the charm of the video. It's not overpowering, it sounds nice and the rain can still be heard.
8
10
u/justtobeherenotsure 6d ago
The video should just have gotten the real sound of the underwater footage. I'm not amazed, unpopular opinion apparently!

Swimming in rain is fantastic. I remember being in an outdoor heated pool during a snowstorm at a local gym. At night too.

I've been seeing quite a few videos on Reddit recently with that underwater camera. Is it a stealth marketing op?
9
u/UnderratedAMIT 6d ago
Nah I just love sharing these beautiful and amazing videos of nature
I don't have any proper idea about underwater cameras and all xd→ More replies (1)4
u/Junin-Toiro 6d ago
Might be, but underwater camera housing are super niche and expensive, and not the easiest to use, plus you already need a few thousands of camera and lens to put inside, so advertising it to the masses is not the best strategy.
It might be a marketing operation from the ones doing the filming.

Interesting that the image looking up to the surface from underneath is so crystal clear, given the depth and the quality of the water.
1
u/AdLess1413 6d ago
I always love when scuba diving seeing the rain hitting the surface. The downside is it’s cloudy out so the lack of sunlight really cuts down underwater visibility, especially after ~30ft

I can understand why the fish thinks it’s grub time. Looks like a lot of insects landing

Dreamworks/Pixar are losing out on an opportunity to represent this as an underwater “night sky” scene for sea creatures. 🌌

Sure would've loved to be able to clearly hear the difference, but nope, Hans Zimmer here had to add extra atmosphere.

When I was a kid, I always loved diving into the pool on rainy days, sinking to the bottom, and looking up for as long as I could. This video brought that feeling back to me - it’s probably a little colored by nostalgia, but it’s still a wonderful feeling

I had a hailstorm setting in during a dive ... that was interesting too. The water looks like it's being cooked.

I love swimming in a small lake while it's raining like this or even a bit more heavily.
First, it's so quiet and no one else is on the lake. Second, if you dip down so just your eyes and nose are on the water, it begins to look like the raindrops bouncing off the water are rain drops being pulled up and out of the water toward the sky.
