Genuinely curious if in all my years on reddit I've ever been in a single comment section where "everybody else is way dumber than I am" wasn't a top comment🤔

But..this is dumb?

The video changes orientation. Above water is normal, when mc goes below, it's widescreen and you have to turn your phone (and turn off auto-orientation) to view proper.

how is making vertical videos dumb bro😭

No video could have been improved by being filmed vertically.

Every video filmed vertically could have been improved filming horizontally instead.

How are vertical videos not dumb?

this video is clearly made for a vertical platform. then it switches to quasi horizontal so you could see the full horizontal picture on a vertical platform(e.g. tiktok)

it's not made for a PC monitor, it's made for tiktok/shorts/instagram specifically

Every vertical video filmed for a vertical platform could have been improved by filming horizontally instead. Even videos made to be viewed only on a phone should be filmed horizontally.

I have never been watching a horizontal video and wished it was vertical instead, even when on my phone.

You can't get around vertical video being the wrong orientation for human eyesight.

This video was dumb for being filmed vertically, it was made even more dumb by switching orientation mid video.

do you genuinely believe that anyone but you enjoys watching a video where only like 30% of the screen are utilized instead of the full screen?

Every screen I can view a video with already is horizontal or can go horizontal. Why would a horizontal video only fill up 30% of my horizontal screen?

If a video is filmed horizontal then viewing it horizontal is never a problem so just view all horizontal videos on a horizontal screen. I'm sure every screen you buy in a big box store can go horizontal.

Do you only have screens that only go vertical? How do you watch movies on your vertical only screens? Is this why you think horizontal videos only cover 30% of a screen, because even your TV is vertical?

My eyes are in a horizontal position. My field of view is in a horizontal orientation. Horizontal videos make sense because of these basic facts.

If you've only got one eye or vertical eyes and only have a vertical TV I can see why you have such a wrong preference for vertical videos, otherwise it doesn't seem humanly possible to enjoy vertically filmed video over horizontally filmed video.

because that's how screens work. you can't take even half of a vertical screen with a 16:9 picture without cropping it.

and like i said it's a matter of the app, and not just "uhhh why can't you watch a horizontal video on a horizontal screen" - no, you can't have a horizontal screen on tiktok and instragram, platforms that are clearly the target for this particular video.

did you, like, just not read that I wrote to you about this video being made for a vertical platform? Why are you playing dumb here? This video is made for Instagram, why are you bringing up this bullshit about one eye or vertical eyes?

You just record horizontal video for vertical platforms, people would rotate their phones like they would for any other horizontal video. Nothing stops people from recording horizontal video other than stupidity.

It's pretty clear the better alternative would be to just not use vertical platforms to begin with. Solves the whole problem.

In many cases filming vertically necessitates constant, rapid horizontal camera panning because it's not practical to capture the scene properly while filming in portrait.

u/Same_Square2555 6d ago

I mean that's about filming vertically, not making the final product vertical. Though yeah, I agree, trying to film something wide vertically is a nightmare

Yeah, I posted this because I'm intellectually superior...

Or it truly, truly is idiotic to ruin it both for vertical phone holder AND horizontal. So if you enjoy this format, you truly are magical.

But sure, go off on how everybody on reddit is the same and how only you can see through the magical skein into the true reddit. The heart of reddit. Because you, and only you, are the true redditor. The one to save us all.

All you had to do is pause and rotate the phone (on Android you don't have to do anything other than rotate because auto orientation is explicit) and all's well with the world instead of calling each other morons. The second half is meant to be viewed in landscape anyway.

-2

u/KEPD-350 6d ago

Or he could just film it all in landscape and not like a... well, moron.

1

u/destroyerOfTards 6d ago

Or...or, if you read the other comments, you find out that it's two different videos merged together.

oh i just assumed that dude is calling people preferring to watch stuff on their phones morons, but implying that the video is vertical because the creator is a moron? wow

-1

u/justacheesyguy 6d ago

Because the creator is a moron the video switches from vertical to horizontal mid stream.

If someone wants to use vertical video on a platform that primarily uses that format that doesn’t make them a moron. Likewise, if they wanted to present something horizontally that wouldn’t make them a moron.

But this moron needs to pick one format and stick with it for the entirety of the whopping 34 seconds this video takes up.

2

u/Same_Square2555 6d ago

it never switches to anything. it's originally vertical for phones, and then becomes quasi horizontal so any person wathcing on a phone can flip and enjoy horizontal view for a better picture

i swear have you people never seen this? It's a super common thing in video editing - you flip the image so viewers can enjoy full horizontal image on strictly-vertical platforms like tiktok or youtube shorts

but no, the OP is just a moron

1

u/justacheesyguy 6d ago

So it doesn’t switch, it just becomes something else.

Got it.

You’re also a moron.

1

u/Same_Square2555 6d ago

it does switch. It's always a video for a vertical platform. Initially it shows a vertical picture since there's no need in landscape, then it switches to horizontal since now there is a need for landscape.

Also, what's the obsession with calling people morons?

1

u/justacheesyguy 6d ago

So in your first reply to me you said it didn’t switch, and now you’re saying it did switch. Would you like to pick one position or do you want to keep moving the goalposts?

And it’s not an obsession, I really wish the world wasn’t so full of people like you and then I wouldn’t feel the need to properly label you.

1

u/Same_Square2555 6d ago

switch thing aside, once again ROTATING the screen from vertical to horizontal is a really common and absolutely non MORONic practice in video editing. The fact that you are completely unaware of relatively basic things like this in no way means the rest of the world is full of morons

1

u/justacheesyguy 6d ago

Sadly, really common doesn’t mean it’s not moronic. Thankfully, this is the first time I’ve seen something like this that I can recall, but yes, forcing someone to change the orientation in the middle of watching something is absolutely stupid and not something that should be done unless it’s some sort of performance piece of art or there are other extenuating circumstances. It’s a 30 second video, not a bop-it toy.

Also I like how you just toss away the “switch thing” as if that wasn’t the entire reason I called you a moron in the first place.

“Aside from the fact that I said something really fucking stupid, I’m not a moron”

1

u/Same_Square2555 6d ago

really common in this scenario means it's an absolutely benign practice that's not stupid or backwards in any way and it's just you not understanding why it's being done

you're not forced to do anything per se, you can always scroll down. but people that don't mind taking a second to rotate their phone will have a better experience because now they can experience a landscape view. It's literally just using your phone in landscape view, but in reality of vertical apps.

Switch thing was a mistake on my part. I replied to your comment without first reading my original comment, but it didn't change anything. Switch this switch that in this scenario is just semantics. The core of the case is that the screen is rotated so you can enjoy a landscape view in a non-landscape-friendly environment such as Tiktok.
