Digipack to jewel case

Is it sacrilege to take a digipack/digisleeve and cut it up to fit inside of a jewel case? I don’t like how digipack and digisleeves look and hold the cd so I’ve been taking empty jewel cases and transitioning the packaging methods. Thoughts on doing this? Am I wrongfully mangling cd cases or is this a fair idea?

No don't do it. You will regret it later on. Digipacks aren't that bad, just enjoy them for what they are. Put them on a shelf and nothing will happen to them

Agree absolutely. I thought about this about 20 years ago when digipacks first started being issued, and I am so glad I did not.

There is a good and easy answer.

Download and print the cover art to put in a jewel case. Pack up the digipak if you ever need it later.

Win-win.

In the 90s I knew someone that worked at Kinkos. They would let me bring in digipaks, get full color copies of the covers, then claim they were bad copies and "throw them away" since they could never seem to fit the entire front & back on one sheet. Digipaks in storage, color copies covers in jewel cases on the shelf.

It's stupid.

I tried to do this once with my Badmotorfinger 2016 release and I ruined it, it's not the easiest.

I think that’s fucking awful.

It’s your property, so definitely do what you want with it.

I personally don’t understand the notion, but that’s me.

Keeping it as is seems like collecting music, chopping up and re-housing seems like an arts and craft project of your own. I can see the appeal in both, they just don’t overlap in that way for me.

I don't have a problem with digipacks as they hold the CDs the same way as jewel cases.

With digisleeves I use adhesive backed spindles to turn them them into digipacks. Works great if it's just one disc, if it has multiple then it's going to add too much bulk unfortunately.

If you are going to cut them up then at least use a ruler and a standing knife to get it as precise and as neat as possible.

To me that digipak is part of the whole package, part if what buying physical media is all about. Buying cutting it up, you are reducing that collecting experience, IMO. Better to print off artwork for a case and show the digital if you want to go that route.

I prefer to get digi-packs but it’s getting hard to get

Do what you like. It’s only a problem if you’re looking to sell them and don’t advertise them with their modifications.

Just print copies of the cover cropped/resized to fit a jewel case.

Always considered this too but never did. They should come with an insert slip of just the front cover or anything really. A handful of my favorite cds are digi pack and it's annoying cause all my discs are in binders with the booklets, i hate flipping through and seeing just discs in some slots.

Would I prefer to have all my Pearl Jam CD’s in jewel cases? Yes. Does that mean I’m prepared to destroy the original packaging to do so? No.

Just download covers and spines off the internet and print them out.
