Casual Ohio St fans should be ashamed

Over 5,000 hate filled comments have showed up on Ohio St kicker Jayden Fielding’s social media since last night. Fanbase should be ashamed they’re harassing one of their own, it isn’t good for the player, team, or sport. No excuse for it, touch grass. Hope the fanbase can lift up this young man in time for their next game instead of tearing him down even more.

Unfortunately gambling makes it far more than just a game to some people. They stake their livelihoods on that shit. Gambling is ruining sports.

Gambling is ruining lives . And yet, you can't watch or listen sports without it being shoved down your throat.

When I still did private bar divorce cases, gambling addicts were worse than heroin addicts when it came to asset division and escape of the other spouse. It's insanely abusive and not taken as seriously as it needs to be.

private bar divorce cases

If I ever get divorced, I'm going to have an open bar divorce haha.

But yes you’re right. The gambling stuff is out of control. They can’t advertise cigarettes on TV but I can’t go 2 seconds without seeing a draft kings of bet mgm ad

Hell, ban gambling ads, and anything medically related. There is no reason why prescription drugs are allowed to be advertised in any form. It's insane.

Why ban prescription drug ads? Thats how I found this cream that makes my skin less red - but causes frequent butt leaks as the trade off.

Now on a positive note, while the cream hasn’t helped my skin, the constant leaking of butt juice has prevented anyone from paying attention to the slight redness of my skin!

For real. I would be willing to work with my spouse through drug issues, if they happened. Gambling? No way. Get the f out, immediately. Or it will consume you and everything you have.

one of my buddies was out of the country on vacation, and he text me that he need to borrow a few hundred dollars to pay his hotel bill and food.

I immediately facetimed him to tell him someone was using his number and trying to scam people.

... It was a legit text from him. I thought his sports betting was just a fun 5 bucks here or there. Nope. That shit consumed him. He was living for free at home and had an almost 6 figure job, but was so down bad that he needed an emergency cash infusion while OVERSEAS with his girlfriend because he miscalculated when some of his gambling debts were due vs when his winnings paid out...

Long story short, I sent him the money but only if he got help once he got back. He's actually doing much better now... as far as I know. He did end up paying me back a few months later, I thought I was never going to see that money again.

A really somber way to put it is that for most other life ruining addictions like drugs and alcohol, you just die. When you're addicted to gambling, you're perpetually in debt, passing all that debt on to loved ones, and still have 40 years of that to deal with.

4

u/prailock Ohio State • Marquette Dec 07 '25

And they take out lines of credit in their spouse's name, their kids' names, their employees' names if they own a business, and that's just the ones I've seen myself. It's incredibly destructive and frequently has a co-addiction to a substance either already present or develop the more they get into debt.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '25

Man, I’d like to hear some stories. Gambling is not my thing, alcohol is. I bet you have some good ones.

In 50 years we’re going to talk about gambling ads the same way we talk about tobacco ads today.

We're already having those conversations. Unfortunately we live in a society where money talks, and the casinos have lots of it and are continuously accumulating more.

We had those conversations in the 1920s (the black sox started a crackdown) and the 1960s (federal wire act). And the people have forgotten them....

horse racing and vegas were the compromises.

so when the internet appeared, organized crime and exploitative types decided to do it again. It's a push in EU as well.

Now it's available for addiction in your pocket, anywhere, anytime.

I feel like people underestimate how important the Black Sox scandal was in SPORTS history in America. Not just baseball. There have been fixing scandals and ugly betting incidents since then, but it feels like it left such a scar on the American psyche that it caused such scandals to be far less common than in some other parts of the world. I've read accounts of what sports gambling was like in America before the Black Sox, and it was so pervasive that it makes the current environment seem crazy only because technology has made the current environment easier to do stuff in.

Like, apparently there have been a bunch of match-fixing scandals in Europe in soccer. There have been like four different major betting scandals in Taiwanese baseball in the last thirty years.

Now, though, it's all in the open. And it feels like the scab has been completely pulled off, letting the infection take hold, and it's affecting the gamblers, their families, the players, the coaches... everyone.

3

u/Fritzkreig Indiana Hoosiers Dec 07 '25

Not even just Organized Crime. If you look at Vegas these days, the gambling magnates are all corporate. Same with many of these websites - you don't need Mobsters, you just need sufficiently morality free white collar types. They used to steer clear of gambling and such but now it's just another profit sector to be squeezed.

2

u/beer-football Florida State • San Diego State Dec 08 '25

Well organized crime has moved into the morality free white collar and political sector and vice versa for a while, but your point stands.

It's "legal-ish" enough and it's making money.

The sports gambling boom has me seriously rethinking lifelong civil libertarian opinions about how prohibition doesn't work. Like maybe there really is marginal utility in making it more difficult for people to access addictive things

26

u/34HoldOn Michigan • Michigan State Dec 07 '25

That was always the point, and it does in fact work. Perfection isn't the enemy of good.

9

u/seatsfive Dec 08 '25

I think online gambling is particularly untenable in the era of smart phones. The fact that you can drain your life savings to make prop bets on the portable Skinner box we all carry around is completely insane. That has to be reined in if nothing else. If you want to bet $1,000 on what color shoes Kevin Durant wears tomorrow, you should at a minimum have to go into a building and look another human being in the eye when you do it.

2

u/BestJersey_WorstName Nebraska Cornhuskers Dec 07 '25

Prohibition doesn't work when sudden withdrawal from the vice risks death, as it does with alcoholism.

Prohibiting porn, gambling, weed, and tobacco are public policy positions with room for debate. And yes, some of the things I listed in that are not like the others. That's why it's a debate.

Gambling is basically the feature presentation on sports shows. The betting like takes precedence over actual scores.

For fucks sake, ESPN had a segment where their talking heads were railing about the travesty of betting on sports with a fucking ESPN BET banner taking up at least 1/3 of the ticker at the bottom. It's pathetic.

These ads for gambling have seemed to replace the military ads.

2

u/Repulsive_Ad7491 Nebraska Cornhuskers Dec 07 '25

As someone who used to be in recruiting, that’s just because the military is finally coming to terms with the fact that no one watches live tv anymore outside of sports and people way too old to join the military. So we are slowly starting to transition to other forms of media.

On the other hand, conveniently sports are a great place for gambling ads because the ad directly relates to what the person is watching.

2

u/yearz Alabama Crimson Tide Dec 07 '25

We worship money. Capitalism worked best when it was tempered by a strong social contract. Without it, capitalism becomes an exercise in which the future is sacrificed at the altar of higher revenue this quarter

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Link416 Indiana Hoosiers Dec 07 '25

And we are making it EASIER to ruin lives! Back in the day, you had to either go to Vegas (or if you were really pathetic, Atlantic City) to gamble, or took a chance with a bookie. Now you just download an app.

Deregulation is pretty harmful to the customer base when you let the private sector call the shots.

I know a LOT of people who gamble. None of them.have a problem gambling money they can't afford to lose. Some of them may have other vices that are self destructive. I know far more people who drink too much.

I'd wager (LOL) most problem gamblers have bigger issues.

14

u/openshutcase_johnson Dec 07 '25

If you know “a lot” of gamblers some of them are definitely gambling money they can’t afford to lose. It’s just statistics. Gambling is unlike most other addictions where you can’t see the damage or notice it.

I was able to hide multiple years salaries of losses from my wife, parents, siblings, cousins, and closest friends and they were all shocked when I told them. Most gambling stories are like this too.

6

u/Expendable_Red_Shirt Wesleyan (CT) Cardinals Dec 07 '25

I know a LOT of people who gamble.

How many? 10,000 people? 100,000 people?

Sources I can find show that about 50-60% of the US has gambled in the past year. The US has an adult population of 258 million. So let's be conservative and say half that. 125 million have gambled.

Now, let's say you know 100,000 gamblers pretty well. That's, what, 0.08% of the gamblers in this country. So even if you know that many gamblers well enough to know their finances etc., and you don't, you still don't know "a LOT" of people who gamble.

I wish people would stop pretending their anecdotes are actual data.

-3

u/Psychological-Sky257 Dec 07 '25

We should ban dancing and demon liquor, too.
