Casual Ohio St fans should be ashamed

Over 5,000 hate filled comments have showed up on Ohio St kicker Jayden Fielding’s social media since last night. Fanbase should be ashamed they’re harassing one of their own, it isn’t good for the player, team, or sport. No excuse for it, touch grass. Hope the fanbase can lift up this young man in time for their next game instead of tearing him down even more.

When I still did private bar divorce cases, gambling addicts were worse than heroin addicts when it came to asset division and escape of the other spouse. It's insanely abusive and not taken as seriously as it needs to be.

Hell, ban gambling ads, and anything medically related. There is no reason why prescription drugs are allowed to be advertised in any form. It's insane.

Why ban prescription drug ads? Thats how I found this cream that makes my skin less red - but causes frequent butt leaks as the trade off.

Now on a positive note, while the cream hasn’t helped my skin, the constant leaking of butt juice has prevented anyone from paying attention to the slight redness of my skin!

one of my buddies was out of the country on vacation, and he text me that he need to borrow a few hundred dollars to pay his hotel bill and food.

I immediately facetimed him to tell him someone was using his number and trying to scam people.

... It was a legit text from him. I thought his sports betting was just a fun 5 bucks here or there. Nope. That shit consumed him. He was living for free at home and had an almost 6 figure job, but was so down bad that he needed an emergency cash infusion while OVERSEAS with his girlfriend because he miscalculated when some of his gambling debts were due vs when his winnings paid out...

Long story short, I sent him the money but only if he got help once he got back. He's actually doing much better now... as far as I know. He did end up paying me back a few months later, I thought I was never going to see that money again.

A really somber way to put it is that for most other life ruining addictions like drugs and alcohol, you just die. When you're addicted to gambling, you're perpetually in debt, passing all that debt on to loved ones, and still have 40 years of that to deal with.

4

u/prailock Ohio State • Marquette Dec 07 '25

And they take out lines of credit in their spouse's name, their kids' names, their employees' names if they own a business, and that's just the ones I've seen myself. It's incredibly destructive and frequently has a co-addiction to a substance either already present or develop the more they get into debt.

20

u/ContinuumGuy St. John Fisher • Syracuse Dec 07 '25

I feel like people underestimate how important the Black Sox scandal was in SPORTS history in America. Not just baseball. There have been fixing scandals and ugly betting incidents since then, but it feels like it left such a scar on the American psyche that it caused such scandals to be far less common than in some other parts of the world. I've read accounts of what sports gambling was like in America before the Black Sox, and it was so pervasive that it makes the current environment seem crazy only because technology has made the current environment easier to do stuff in.

Like, apparently there have been a bunch of match-fixing scandals in Europe in soccer. There have been like four different major betting scandals in Taiwanese baseball in the last thirty years.

Now, though, it's all in the open. And it feels like the scab has been completely pulled off, letting the infection take hold, and it's affecting the gamblers, their families, the players, the coaches... everyone.

Not even just Organized Crime. If you look at Vegas these days, the gambling magnates are all corporate. Same with many of these websites - you don't need Mobsters, you just need sufficiently morality free white collar types. They used to steer clear of gambling and such but now it's just another profit sector to be squeezed.

I think online gambling is particularly untenable in the era of smart phones. The fact that you can drain your life savings to make prop bets on the portable Skinner box we all carry around is completely insane. That has to be reined in if nothing else. 2

u/Repulsive_Ad7491 Nebraska Cornhuskers Dec 07 '25

As someone who used to be in recruiting, that’s just because the military is finally coming to terms with the fact that no one watches live tv anymore outside of sports and people way too old to join the military. So we are slowly starting to transition to other forms of media.

On the other hand, conveniently sports are a great place for gambling ads because the ad directly relates to what the person is watching.

Gambling may not have been legal then but that doesn’t mean bets weren’t placed. I’m not excusing shitty fans. Simply saying just because it only recently became “legal” some places doesn’t mean it wasn’t happening before that. Just on a far smaller scale.

28

u/RonnieFromTheBlock Georgia Bulldogs Dec 07 '25

No doubt, but thinking back to 2013, when Cade Foster was run off the internet, I don't think that emotion and vitriol was due to lost bets.

That same emotion exists today with or without gambling.

4

u/Gleaguepullup LSU Tigers Dec 07 '25

This is what I remember. Gambling obviously amplified things, but I think when you look at social media (team based sports subs, sports forums, twitter, facebook, etc…) the realization I always come to is that a lot of fans are too immature to interact with the sports they enjoy. I think, perhaps a little too optimistically, most IRL fans are chill and healthy, but the online contingent prone to “crashing out” genuinely can’t handle when their ideal outcome doesn’t occur. At least part of it is not forming a healthy detachment from the sports they watch. As much as I love my team it’s just a game when my livelihood isn’t tied to the result lol

2

u/weirdbutinagoodway West Virginia Mountaineers • Big 12 Dec 07 '25

You're right and I'd say most problem gamblers were finding bookies to make bets with long before it became legal in most places. I really wish it wasn't everywhere though, "Coffee Shops" are the only places that out number vape shops in West Virginia (seems like it, I don't have actual numbers).

1

u/WON95sr Creighton Bluejays Dec 07 '25

There are definitely people who don't gamble but take this all way too seriously though, and that's almost sadder. People build their whole personalities around sports teams and let it dictate their lives. Gambling makes it worse and creates a lot of new problems, but we let entertainment and sports specifically carry so much weight.

It's like with fall weddings. Some people just joke about it, but anybody that actually has their week ruined because they can't watch their team on TV for that one day because they have to go to a wedding for a loved one is a fucking loser.

14

u/RememberingTiger1 Michigan Wolverines Dec 07 '25

I was just going to post that it's not being driven solely by gambling. I've lived in two college football centric cities (Columbus and Knoxville) and stuff like this has been going on since the 70s. Telephoned and mailed death threats happened in both places. Some fans (fanatics) look at their teams in a completely unhinged manner. It's just ramped up astronomically with the advent of social media.

5

u/HelpMePlease420-69 Dec 07 '25

It doesn’t matter, every thread is an opportunity to get upvotes for complaining about gambling whether it’s relevant or not. It’s literally the same chain of comments and replies every time

1

u/Bored_Amalgamation Dec 07 '25 edited Dec 07 '25

I'll put it this way. There were opioid addicts before oxycotin, percs, and Vicodin were commonplace. There are significantly more opioid addicts now because of the opioid meds getting handed out like candy. Are the opioid manufacturers who produced, encouraged, and incentivized to use of their meds being "scapegoated" for an issue that has already existed?

There will always be people making poor decisions. We can't stop that. What companies like FanDuel, MGM, Draft kings, etc. do is popularize and glamourize gambling. They change the way gambling is viewed by the public and the target audience. It's not a "moral hazard", it's "just getting more in to the game". They make betting money on sports just as normal as tailgating with friends. So there's no longer any type of social caution that's used. It's just $5 her,. $20 there. You know, for fun.

So yeah. Fans have been shitty. Especially Ohio-based sports. However, gambling makes it more than entertainment. It allows people to put real-world consequences in to the calculation of a literal game. It allows people to put rent payments, food for their kids, the vacation in 6 weeks, on the line. That will draw out emotions usually reserved for real world shit.

Edit: I'm watching a guy doing the play by play for the Browns/Titans game. Sanders just scored a touchdown, that triggered the guy to do an ad spot for PrizePicks.

"It's the holiday season, it's the best time... While your making decisions everyday, on what to eat, where to go, there's one place where it feels good to be right... I love this app, it's a lot of fun, I make money, and because I watch the browns I know what picks to make."

You see how they turn betting money in to an everyday decision? How they tie "feel good about being right" to gambling? It's "fun". "I make money". "I know I'll win because I'm smart about the sports team I watch". It hits every note a guy watching football would want to hear.

When America gets its head out of its ass, Ill bet $20 that gambling will get banned again.

Didn’t you guys have a super fan recently write a manifesto, run a multi-year long cheating scheme, and even go in disguise on the sidelines of a team playing your rival MSU after he was let in by former Michigan players/staffers? The guy ended up earning a ban from the NCAA. He didn’t even go to Michigan.

You sure you want to talk about crazy fans?

People seriously just need to get a life outside of college football. Every fan base has their share of crazies and it’s a massive issue. College kids and their coaches shouldn’t be receiving death threats because of a loss.

20

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '25

Not only that,  3 PT loss when you're likely still guaranteed a top 4 seed

12

u/Dangerous_Hotel1962 Dec 07 '25

People seriously need to find a way to make a living without offering gambling. .all these guys at draft kings and fam duel, they'd be perfectly wealthy working somewhere else. There was just no need to legalize this.

The only reason he had the chance to miss the FG is because the Indiana kicker missed a FG in the first half. They’re humans. It happens. The level of insanity it takes to send a kid death threats is absurd

Re-evaluate is the nicest thing you could have told people threatening kids over a game lmao. Social media is a cancer and ESPN is a tumor.

22

u/ironwolf1 Penn State • NC State Dec 07 '25

That’s the problem with gambling. For many people it’s no longer “just a game”, because they have money on the line. That’s why there has been a marked uptick in the number of death threats getting thrown around after losses like this, because gamblers losing money are unable to regulate themselves.

1

u/DemonsWatchOverMe Texas Longhorns • North Texas Mean Green Dec 07 '25

You're point is the most valid but also, if you don't want your game to hinge on a field goal, play offense better.

I dislike that logic because we live in the real world where close games against good opponents often result in wins in the margins, and your kicking efficiency is high on that list.

Not only is it just a game, it isn't even that consequential of a game. Oh no our missed field goal means we ... still get a bye in the playoffs in arguably an EASIER side of the bracket? TF is wrong with these people.

2

u/deg0ey Ohio State Buckeyes Dec 07 '25

Yeah exactly. It is kinda weird that we have this much money and never seem to have a kicker we can rely on in big moments, but if that’s our biggest problem then pretty much every other school in the country would gladly trade places do it’s not worth getting worked up over.

For real. Not to mention this particular game has almost zero consequence to an Ohio state fan. That shouldn't be why you don't send a college kid death threats, but jfc, at least consider the reality of the situation. At the worst Ohio state might drop to, what, 3?

Are death threats illegal? Feels like if someone sends a death threat that has moved beyond the protection of free speech.

1

u/Ok_Pineapple_Num Stanford Cardinal Dec 07 '25

Idk if this will resonate… but I’ve always felt a very different relationship to my college football team than I do to my NFL team, for example.

I mean, when I was in undergrad, I had a few friends who were on the football team.  I had classes and hung out with them, as well as other athletes.  So I thought of my school’s athletes much more as peers/friends, than just athletes to watch.  As a result, I always felt reluctant to harshly criticize players — while I felt no such reservations doing that for players on my favorite NFL team.

I’m a couple years out of undergrad now, but I feel largely the same about the football team now.  Of course it’s frustrating if they play shitty, but these guys aren’t just random grown ass men.  They’re 18-22 year old kids who very well may have been a friend or classmate if I were an undergrad now.

For that reason, I find it particularly egregious when people are verbally abusive towards their college’s players.  I mean, how can you be an alum of a college and send hate and death threats towards one of your own?  Or even if you aren’t an alum and just a fan, still — sending hate towards an 18-22 yo kid?  Pathetic.

Sending hate and death threats is never ok to anyone even to NFL players ofc, but it’s a new level of low to do that to a college kid.  Idiots

Win together, lose together. No single person loses a game, it is a collection of events. Everyone who is threatening the kid, couldn't have handled that pressure.

1

u/grassgravel Dec 07 '25

Im a buckeyes fan. Losing sucks. We made some poor play calling choices that led to this moment but we still got into the playoffs. So theres no reasons to go insane over this, excluding playoff opportunities its never right to go after an athlete for failure.

But I got respect for what cignetti did, he turned out program around with integrity...unlike some programs.
