The fourth down play where both Marsh and Becker were wide open for touchdowns is one of the worst defensive plays I’ve seen. Nebraska acted like it was a goal-line situation where all 11 guys can attack the QB

On one hand, Nebraska's defense played well overall and you can't really expect them to contain Marsh and Becker for an entire game

On the other hand, that specific play was such a fucking awful showing for their defense that it seems like it broke their entire team for the rest of the game

I guess if you're going to completely leave a guy wide open for a walk-in TD you might as well leave both of them as open. Only get one throw per play

Only get one throw per play

Until the final play

Well…technically they were penalized for that, but yes.

I guarantee someone didn't do what they were supposed to on that play. There is no way that is how it was called

I’d venture to guess at least two someones didn’t do what they were supposed to do, not just one.

Just a complete failure.

Arguably you could intentionally leave one person open and expect you get pressure before the QB gets to that option but they would get there much quicker with 2 available

u/Neo-_-_- Nebraska • Kansas State 7d ago

Two were past the secondary, yep

u/AbsurdOwl Nebraska Cornhuskers 7d ago

Apparently, we rolled our goal line package out, and no one called a timeout to fix it.

Post game presser Rhule and Chambliss said that they subbed in goal line personnel (inferred to be because Aurich didn’t realize Marsh and Becker were still on the field) and the defense didn’t communicate appropriately. The sold out completely for a run.

That or you dialed up the Buddy Ryan Bear Front cover 1 and you immediately got hit by one of that coverage's and front's critical weaknesses: any kind of play action or boot leg run from a hard fake.

Honestly Nebraska really struggled with the pass all game and a couple 50+ yard passing TDs were killed by the wind

5

u/fazelenin02 Nebraska Cornhuskers 7d ago

Thats been the story all year. Elite on a down to down basis only for incomprehensible mistakes in big moments. We gave multiple 50+ plays to both Maryland and Ohio.

2

u/jdam0819 Nebraska Cornhuskers 7d ago

It was the play call, idk why aurich had us send 10.

Yeah that's gonna live in my head for a long long time

two wide open receivers and that one dude playing qb spy for some reason I don't know why lmfao

2

u/Kodyaufan2 Auburn • Jacksonville State 6d ago

A spy on 4th and 1 in the open field is a truly wild decision lol

u/toomanyshoeshelp Indiana Hoosiers 6d ago

The missed FG was worse

u/lil_layne Indiana Hoosiers 7d ago

I thought the refs blew the whistle because I could not believe the defense just froze and left 2 of the best WRs in the conference unguarded

u/Upset_Version8275 Indiana Hoosiers • Texas Longhorns 7d ago

I seriously think Nebraska thought the play was dead

6

u/adamtjames Nebraska Cornhuskers 7d ago

I thought it was a dead play too

2

u/PossibleEquivalent90 Nebraska Cornhuskers • Sickos 6d ago

It wasn't.

Our coaches actually have a package that features a D-Lineman in the secondary because our coaches are bad at their jobs. They just literally assumed passing was not an option. They didn't use a timeout - something Rhule did on a PAT attempt - on a critical situation because he's out of his depth.

Nebraska Football is a God's honest painful experience, and they have to start winning these games because it's embarrassing. And there's only so much embarrassment fans can take before they tune out.

u/NerdOctopus Nebraska Cornhuskers 7d ago

It must have been an insane gamble on a run, right? Some sort of all out blitz play hoping to rattle the QB before they could lob it? I can't understand the decision.

23

u/username293739 Nebraska Cornhuskers 7d ago

Rhule said they swapped out a lineman and Nebraska had the wrong personnel in for the play and should have called a timeout to adjust, but didn’t.

5

u/chilibreez 7d ago

Couldn't. We were out of timeouts, which is a responsibility that needs to be taken away from Rhule.
Love him as a coach, I have Kool aid in my veins, but his clock management is Iowa corn.

I don't think that play was how they drew it up

3

u/hrbekcheatedin91 Georgia Bulldogs 7d ago

I thought it looked like Engage 11 but 2 guys were manually put into spy, lol. Then it just got worse with the 4th and 9 call.

1

u/Tiki2777 6d ago

Closer to engage 8 lmao

16

u/ItsSportingJoe 7d ago

Also, how do you watch the run fail 50 times and expect them to run on a game changing 4th down

10

u/2-59project Indiana Hoosiers • Oklahoma Sooners 7d ago

Especially in the series directly following them allowing a back breaking 75 yard TD catch. You’d think they’d be a bit more mindful of containing the WRs

6

u/timhoff24 Iowa State • Omaha 7d ago

Per Rhule’s post-game, there was miscommunication and a goal line defensive scheme was called.

7

u/Significant_Onion_69 Michigan Wolverines 7d ago

But there was a sale on selling out against the run. Gotta cash in on that

3

u/ImTellinTim Michigan • Minnesota-Duluth 7d ago

Number 2 did not even move until the pass was thrown.

4

u/polishprince76 Indiana • Notre Dame 7d ago

2 games (this and northwestern) where the opposing D sold out hard on the run all game and it worked, right up until the very end where IU finally adjusted to it.

2

u/Sargent_Caboose Indiana Hoosiers 7d ago

What can I say, this is why I love Haines

4

u/Luvpups5920 Indiana Hoosiers • College Football Playoff 7d ago

You mean Shanahan, the OC, right?

1

u/Sargent_Caboose Indiana Hoosiers 7d ago

No, I said this because Haines had better defensive playcalling to not do this. They didn't have many breakaway plays, outside of some really bad attempts at tackling

I love Shanahan too though to go for it

1

u/captainbarmoosa Nebraska Cornhuskers 7d ago

It was such a stupid defensive call. You can’t have no one back there with that much open field behind you

3

u/LongDukDongle Nebraska Cornhuskers • Sickos 7d ago

The Goal line personnel got sent in somehow.

1

u/bigbluethunder Iowa Hawkeyes • Michigan Wolverines 7d ago

Washington had a couple very similar scenarios against Iowa last night.

1

u/JayMerlyn Notre Dame Fighting Irish • FBS Independents 7d ago

As a Panthers fan, that screams Matt Rhule

1

u/BuckeyeN7 Ohio State Buckeyes 7d ago

They called ‘engage 8’ and used the right stick to sell out for a run

We’ve all been there

1

u/ZeiglerJaguar Northwestern • South Alabama 6d ago

I saw this as a five second highlight real clip while watching the Northwestern game and audibly went “what the fuck?!”

1

u/Danimal4NU Nebraska Cornhuskers • KAU Lumberjacks 7d ago

It was especially dumb because we were defending the run pretty well. Given that we didn't need to sell-out to stop a run and there was good reason to think Indiana would pass.

1

u/SueYouInEngland Iowa Hawkeyes 6d ago

Why do you think you were stopping the run well?

1

u/Danimal4NU Nebraska Cornhuskers • KAU Lumberjacks 6d ago edited 6d ago

Indiana had only 65yds rushing for the game and at no point in the game really established the run. Biggest run of the day was a Hoover scramble. They did most of their damage through the air. Thus it was dumb to sell-out to stop a run. Which it turned-out we did because we miscommunicated and had a damn goal-line call in. We should have caught it pre-snap and called a TO for but we're as bad about not-using TO's as we are at using them.

1

u/SueYouInEngland Iowa Hawkeyes 6d ago

Because your defense was selling out the run?

1

u/svenSVEN7 Nebraska Cornhuskers 7d ago

We were in a goal line package… 🤦‍♂️

-1

u/literahcola 7d ago

You see shit like that in nearly every game every week though.

0

u/LogicTrolley Nebraska Cornhuskers 6d ago

Starting safety was hurt prior to this and was out. Busted coverage by a backup. Not an excuse as the coaches should have had them prepared.
