the year is 2023. Someone tells you reigning champions IU's toughest games are against Northwestern and (also undefeated) Nebraska. You try to have them committed.

u/monkeybiziu Indiana Hoosiers • Billable Hours 7d ago
I think the ceiling has come down and the floor stayed where it is. Indiana, Ohio State, and Oregon aren't as dominant as they were a year ago. Illinois and Washington regressed majorly. Purdue still sucks, and so does Maryland, Rutgers, and Michigan State. Penn State and Michigan are mid. Nebraska, Iowa, UCLA, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern, and USC are the B1Gs middle class, and there's a solid argument for more of them to be ranked.

When I was a kid, I went hunting with my dad. A buck jumped out in front of where we were hunting, and I went to shoot it. However, I got to excited, and instead of shooting in behind the shoulder blade, I pulled the shot. The buck didn’t take off. Instead, he just kind of scrunched up, like he was in pain. I reloaded the rifle and finished him with a second shot. When we inspected the carcass, we found out that I had somehow shot the deer directly in the testicles, hence the reaction.
That deer is exactly what being an Husker fan is like. Life seems fine, then some douchebag shoots you right in the balls before killing you.

I just knew things would get fucky when Nebraska missed that kick. They were killing us but only up 7. You have to play absolutely perfect and put the dagger in when playing against Cignetti and they just couldn’t do it. We’ll see what we’re made of next week

Nebraska scores to go up 2 scores, stadium is absolutely rocking, they come out in a defensive alignment leaving an elite WR one on one with zero safety help, easily hit a slant and its a 75 yard TD on the first play and immediately a 1 score game again
In pressure situations, Indiana just keeps executing. In pressure situations, Nebraska was scared and hesitant and out of alignment

Cignetti doesn't call offensive or defensive plays. This is all our coordinators outside of the odd play or two. Like throwing a pass to D'Angelo Ponds in the peach bowl was all Cignetti.
Shanahan is massively conservative with good defenses. Tendency to turtle till we build momentum.
Stop our momentum you can kill us, and losing the run game hurt immensely

Goal line pick from Colandrea? 2 more drops from kwazi? 4 huge leaks by the defense? 2 critical penalties that were completely unnecessary? Yet another missed field goal? Up 2 scores in the 4th quarter and lose in regulation?

If it helps rankings are like election poles, there’s an effort by all the major tv deals to actively promote SEC above all as they have the rights to the network games.
In a real, unbiased ranking, based on actual talent and wins, Nebraska and Northwestern should’ve been ranked. Both really good football teams.
People forget IUs win against Penn St came down to the last second toe touch, and that same team went on to beat Ohio State, Alabama, Oregon, and Miami to win it all. Arguably the hardest road to a modern championship in all of post college playoffs history.
I just want to give Nebraska props. They’re a really good team with a diverse QB. They played well.

Indiana likely to drop in the poll after a win for the 4th straight week. Wonder what the longest such streak is.

The AP will use this chance to somehow punish both teams, drop Indiana out of the top 10, and not rank Nebraska in favor of a 3-3 South Carolina.

Very reminiscent of our road win against Iowa last season. That win really propelled the team forward, including a gritty win over a Top 5 conference opponent the following week.

All Nebraska needed was 1 extra big 10 hidden second to win the game!
In all seriousness, Nebraska looked legit amazing for 3 quarters, then their qb started feeling the pressure and was throwing high like a certain qb I know....
Good game overall! Go Hoosiers next week!

People so desperate to say Nebraska choked that away. They were selling hard on the run and pushing serious pressure. It worked for 3 quarters. Hoover couldn't answer. And the offense was kicking the IU D's ass. Colandrea is legit.
IU just finally adjusted. It was a great game. Kudos Nebraska. On to the game of the season. The country will be watching.

It's also a function of the possession meta-game.
We held Indiana to only a handful of offensive plays in the first half.
Once Indiana could make sure they got more offensive reps, their long shots to their NFL-level WRs turned into more points than the first half simply due to having more chances to get them the ball. Nonwithstanding the broken coverage on the conversion, nothing about this game was surprising - Nebraska took the lead, but Indiana was adjusting to their offense and even that last Nebraska scoring drive was getting pushed off-schedule aside from some big throws/runs.
People are going to take the chance to meme, but this game was not a Nebraska 'choke' as much two really good teams countering each other - and Indiana countered the clock control successfully and was able to exploit their mismatch at WR to win the game after that point.

IF Indiana is a top 10 team, then Nebraska should be ranked even with the loss.

If Nebraska takes a top 25 spot though, how can the entire SEC be ranked in the top 25? Think about it next time you say something wild and out of pocket like that please.

They should’ve been ranked before. It’s actually insane how much doubt is put on an IUFB squad when if the logo was different no one would be asking this question.

This is the 3rd time in the last 10 a B1G team started 5-0 and was unranked. That hasn't happened to the SEC since 1943.

7 minutes left, down three, and just panic. Plenty of time to continue to run the offense. Not punting was a dumbass decision, as we could have flipped the field.

Can't help but feel like the last drive of the first half for Nebraska was the beginning of the end. Either way, solid game for Nebraska despite the mistakes. Fix some play calls and execution and they win this game
Their ceiling is higher than I thought a few weeks ago, I'll be cheering for them going forward. No reason to hang your heads, cornhuskers.

Really good game from Nebraska for so much of it. Colandrea just didn’t adjust well to Indiana’s change in pressure and we don’t have anyone capable at CB2.
Looking forward to what the rest of this season brings, I’m feeling very optimistic about 8+ wins. If we’re an SEC team we’d be ranked 18-22 range after this game (higher going in, obviously).

Take away Indiana's 4 big plays and it might have been a shutout.
Make our FG and it's tied.
One call going our way instead of Indiana's and we might win.
Scott Frost taught me that a loss is a loss, but man it's hard to not look at our decade of suck and then this game and feel like we have made some major progress.
Edit: some of you guys need to read my last sentence again....
Edit 2: Jesus you guys. The second half of the post is the important part. We lost. Indiana took advantage of our mistakes in a way that only good teams can do. We lost. It doesn't change the fact that we looked like a real football team against a very well coached football team that won the natty last year.

The fourth down play where both Marsh and Becker were wide open for touchdowns is one of the worst defensive plays I’ve seen. Nebraska acted like it was a goal-line situation where all 11 guys can attack the QB
