I said after the Oklahoma State game that Lanning should obviously not be fired, but he needed to fire his offensive coordinator. That it needs to be their asses now or it will be his ass down the line. Situation is still the same, fire him now or it will be the death of the Lanning era.
Seeing the defense kind of get it together is reassuring for Oregon
but man....the offense is just so,so,so bad. there is no impetus. even against osu there were missed assignments and an overall lack of push at times where'd you expect your four and five star linemen to actually get something going.
Honestly our defense looked awesome today. UCLA's offense is no joke and they somehow kept the most disgusting Oregon offense I've ever witnessed miraculously in the game.
Raiola takes a lot of heat, but there was plenty of blame to go around. Running backs have two rules: 1. Don't lose the ball. 2. Get yardage. In that order.
Davison doesn't drop that ball, Oregon probably wins.
Even worse, Lanning just kicks the point after, Oregon has a chance to win in spite of that showing.
UCLA left the door open, but the offense as a whole just couldn't walk through.
OL Coach is a bigger problem than the OC (who is also terrible. Really Lanning needs to fire the OL coach, OC, QB Coach, and probably the Linebackers coach as well at a minimum this offseason. Way too many bad coaches on his staff.
That only works if there's someone on staff to replace him. The fact that he hasn't suggests there's no one to do a better job. Def needs a new one next year
I agree. Nobody else on our staff has significant play calling experience. I doubt you find an upgrade already on the team. There's plenty of criticism to go around for what got us here, but we're here now. You only fire him if you have completely given up on the season, and we're not there yet. You try the best with what you have for now.
lanning's teams have had a bit of a history of starting slow then kinda gelling by midseason
I don't think this season is lost, we still have a ton of talent and the defense seems to be getting into shape, but the offense looked listless even when Moore was starting
What's your definition of a lost season? We are not beating Ohio State on the road. Probably absolute best case scenario is 9-3 and missing the playoffs. That is not acceptable given what we brought back.
Of course, I'll still be watching and rooting us on every game, it's not like you don't keep trying regardless, but this is not a typical "oh they're starting slow and can still get it together." The damage already done is critical. There is only salvaging the best you can do now, not saving.
Nah. Real ducks fans know we pull an unjustified 1 point win over Ohio state out of our ass, sneak into the playoffs, then get blown out 63-21 to Georgia
Really? If Moore comes back next week, I don't see why it's impossible. We almost won this game with probably the most incompetent QB performance I've seen the ducks put up in at least a decade, possibly more.
I think we could Iowa-ball our way to wins over the rest of our schedule minus Ohio State, the best team is probably Nebraska at home next week. Not saying that's the most likely scenario, but the rest of our schedule minus Ohio State, Nebraska, and Northwestern have looked various shades of incompetent already. It's certainly conceivable.
The inconceivable scenario is the people acting like we could win out and still make the playoff. That's just cope.
What I'm afraid of is rushing Dante to come back before he's ready and either seeing him get injured again or having him totally shit the bed and be totally ineffective in a way like Raiola was today. If Dante is forced to come back like that then I don't see us winning too many of the remaining games.
Well, even under a best-case scenario, I see very little evidence this team won't drop at least 3 more games, and probably more. That's under any possible QB scenario, even a best case. I'm only mildly confident of wins against Michigan State and Washington at this point.
If Dante can play, we have a chance to not get embarrassed. But the chances we would actually win are exceedingly low. As volatile as other elements of the team have been, the OL is still consistently bad, and I do not believe it is fixable. Against Ohio State, we will have absolutely zero run game and whoever the QB is will be running for their life. And even if the defense continues to improve, Jeremiah Smith will still get his as he does against any team, and I'm afraid even doing a good job against them would still yield more points than our offense can muster.
I'll never say never, because stranger things have happened. But weird shit would have to happen.
