Admissions Admissions in Waves
hi, i wanted to hear some people who have experience with cal poly’s decisions.
i heard it is likely the first wave of admits may come out this coming friday. does anyone have experience with how the waves work? does admits come out at different times during the day (most likely friday) based off major or do they spread it across multiple days?
i applied for the architecture in the caed btw
UPDATE: GUYS I GOT IN FOR ARCHITECTURE!!! FIRST YEAR BTW

same for me haha. accepted berkeley’s offer, toured slo after just because i wanted to know and fell in love with the faculty in the english major. rescinded my acceptance from berkeley and went to slo :)

bro. you ditched Berkeley for SLO????? def lying. if you got in for engineering at UCB you just missed out on a lifetime of prestige

u/xtraspread Mar 12 '26
My sister in law got into ucla and still chose cal poly. Sometimes just prestige doesn’t get the job

u/aldanoob Mar 13 '26
it does tho, especially if its not for engineering

If your goal is to get a job in the job market cal poly is a great choice 🤷🏻♀️ also tends to be cheaper, in e better location, etc

location??? literally in teh middle of nowhere. UCLA in the heart of westwood. UCB in silicone valley???

Cal Poly is 2.4 hours from Silicon Valley. It’s well represented in the Valley. Can’t say the same eastward, but no problem if your intention is internships/jobs in the SF Bay Area or LA Basin.

True story. Yes I turned down Berkeley for Poly. Lots of super intelligent people in UCB Industrial Engineering program but they are sorely lacking in applied experience. They really focus on research and grad school. At Poly you are in CAD and materials lab week 1. People at the shops hardly see the IE majors at Cal….yes, I talked to the lab faculty at Berkeley. One saying I heard was, if you want to work at Google figuring out the driving algorithms for Waymo and go in to engineering grad programs, go to UCB. If you want to work on something like the Hubble Space Telescope and then go for an MBA, go to Cal Poly. There is no right or wrong answer. It’s a preference of approach. Also if your intention is to stay in California, West of the Rockies, especially Silicon Valley, Cal Poly gets equal billing in the job market with Stanford, MIT, UC engineering. However Cal Poly is less well known east ward. Not sure why people would come from the East coast to Cal Poly if their plan is to return to the East Coast.. that one is a head scratcher to me.

Cal Poly has been following the 3 decision wave timeline since my kids applied in 2013-2014 although they have pushed these waves out to March. I would assume they will follow the same pattern this year.

This is what my councilor sent me:
Cal Poly SLO admits in waves. They admitted a small number of International and US students Abroad on February 11. Based on last year Friday March 13 should be the first wave, with another wave Monday March 16 and waive of admits and waitlist on March 20. The last wave is typically only waitlist and denials would be expected March 26.

u/This-Following4264 Mar 12 '26
My portal also says "Awaiting Decision"!!! its my dream school. Hope I get Accepted
Is it true that it goes out at different times today? where did you hear Monday?1
u/Confident-Window-238 Mar 12 '26
just from other students, reddit, etc - don't have much confidence as no one seems to really know

u/Confident-Window-238 Mar 12 '26
seems like they've been rolling out over a couple hours today from people posting on here.

Yep it’s true- Friday will be most all admits. Then waitlists a week later. After that it’s denials. If you’re off the waitlist they can be in July!

congrats!! what were your stats for getting in for architecture? i’m currently a junior and hoping to apply for architecture next year!
1
u/mitemio Mar 15 '26
honestly my stats were so mid that im surprised i got in!! my gpa for cal poly was a 4.09 which is in the mid range for admitted caed students. i had 5 years english, 5 years math, 6 years science, and 4 years foreign language. i 100% recommend getting a 5th year of english at ur local community college bc i think it really helped me. cal poly loves when students already have college credit since their ge classes are always packed. i took pretty rigorous classes, but not a lot. i had 5 aps and 3 honors. most rigorous classes were in math and science. i got a c in math sophomore year and a few b’s in math and science throughout highschool so that’s why im so surprised i got in! i was almost able to max out hours for ecs and work and was able to check off the leadership and major related job box.
sorry that this is kinda long!! good luck to u and u can dm me with any questions:)

First waves are generally acceptance letters, second wave has acceptances too but mainly waitlists, third wave is generally rejections
1
Mar 13 '26
when do you think the second wave will be? i haven't heard yet :(
1
u/NotDarkKatie Mechanical Engineering Mar 13 '26
I’m not sure on that one 🥲 if I had to assume, probably 1-2 weeks from now. I got in first wave last year, and from what I last remembered, my friend got her acceptance about a week or two after I had

is a 4.23 csu gpa enough for biology?
1
u/Warm_Cup5199 Mar 12 '26
possibly, if you have 5 years of math, 5 years of english, 4+ years of science, etc
1
Mar 12 '26
I have all that except for 5 years of English? How does someone have 5 years of English?
1
u/Warm_Cup5199 Mar 12 '26
I'm taking one at school this year and one online, some people do dual enrollment at a community college which counts double. it just gives you extra points towards the multi-criteria assessment. Also the cal poly gpa includes freshman year, did you factor that into your gpa? i'm not sure how competitive biology is...
2
Mar 12 '26
Hmmm yea I didn’t do extra English. Yes that’s the CSU GPA on my app. It’s capped tho, the uncapped is higher with 9 APs 1 DE and I only had 2 Bs. I know this cal poly system is weird. Oh well, we will see I guess

u/Exbusterr Mar 13 '26
for Cal Poly, they ñ recalculate to include Freshman year of high school into your app. Cal Poly dumps the GPA from the CSU app.
