Genuine question, not a "chance me." If someone maxes out their course rigor from freshman year and maintains a 4.0 throughout, is rejection from Cal Poly SLO actually possible?
I always assumed a profile like that would be a near-lock for schools outside the T20 range. What's throwing me off is that Cal Poly SLO doesn't even ask for a personal statement or any real questions about who you are as a person — so the application is basically just grades, rigor, and test scores. With nothing else to differentiate applicants, wouldn't a perfect academic record basically guarantee admission?
For context, I also have a engineering internship on my resume. I don't know if Cal Poly even looks at that stuff given how numbers-heavy their process seems to be, but it feels weird that it might not matter at all.
Is rejection genuinely on the table here, or am I overthinking it?

Hey everybody. Just wanted to make this thread so we could share the exciting news. Hopefully we’ll hear back soon. Feel free to leave your name, major, and/or decision if/when you get a response.

i thought cal poly slo only considered grades and course rigor...
i have a 4.18 CSU GPA, 14 APs, straight As (except one B in 2nd semester of an AP class in sophomore year), took calculus III and intro to linear algebra at SDSU (got As in both)
even though I applied for computer engineering (which I know is competitive), i don't really see what more i couldve done to get in. does anybody think they know why i was rejected?

Slo js rejected me without even giving me an update. I check my portal randomly and got this.

This is a PSA from a Solano native and SLO grad. It’s just my .02 but I thought I should sound the alarm after seeing several posts from people considering attending Solano and thinking it is at all comparable to SLO.
Mods please delete if not allowed.
DO NOT GO TO SOLANO!!
I’m appalled that Poly agreed to take over the maritime academy. It should have been decommissioned and demolished. It’s not a real college like you’re expecting, it’s going to feel like you’re at a military academy…because that’s what it was. Students had to wear uniforms until very recently, and a good chunk of them were enlisted in the Navy or did enlist shortly after graduation.
I can’t really speak to the quality of education, I’m sure it’s fine. But that’s only a small part of the college experience. The more memorable and important parts of college: meeting tons of new people, exploring a fun city, joining clubs and finding new interests, taking fun classes like photography or bowling, and generally just exploring yourself and learning who you are as an independent adult…all of that will be missing from (or severely limited in) your college experience.
It will be the most inauthentic college experience possible. And you will almost surely grow to regret your choice later in life.
It’s a tiny campus down a hill and under a bridge, if you have no car you will not be able to do much of anything off campus.
There will be no parties, no Greek life, no sexy coeds sunbathing on the grass out front of the dorms, very few clubs and activities, no intramural sports, basically it has nothing you would expect from a college experience. And there will be hundreds of kids who go for one semester and refuse to return once they hear stories from their friends back home who went to real colleges. Don’t be one of those kids. If you got into Solano but not SLO, go to Cuesta and get fed into SLO after finishing your general ed and pre req classes.
Oh, also the city it’s in is Vallejo. Solano is the county. Now why do you think they would call it Solano instead of Vallejo?
Bay Area natives know, it’s to hide the city name from parents. For those from out of state or other parts of CA, Vallejo isn’t a good area. And to get to the maritime campus, you go through East Vallejo literally the second worst area in Vallejo for crime.
Trust me, you don’t want to wake up 10 years from now and regret your entire college experience. And the chances of that happening if you attend Solano are substantially higher than if you attend basically any other public college in the state (but not Monterey, it has similar problems to “Solano”)
Edited to fix the local slang designation. My bad yall, the official Crest is apparently still just the gentrified area next to six flags. IMO the maritime academy is in a much rougher neighborhood in East Vallejo but historically the Crest is the worst.

My son got accepted. We are from Chicago. He also got into Colorado College (his dream school) but it’s sssooo expensive. So now considering CalPoly. My son is super chill, not into frats, loves sitting around with friends and playing music. Very thoughtful and introspective. Loves outdoors. More of an introvert than extrovert but definitely can be very social. Just prefers chill vibes. Is CalPoly all rah rah and a super huge party school? We are coming there for admitted student day. Any insight helpful.

Little bit of a vent. I got accepted for Materials Engineering. It’s my dream major at my dream school. But tuition is so stupidly expensive for out of state. I would have to go into so much debt, I wouldn’t be able to pay it off for literal decades. I’m so upset.
Sigh
Anyone else dealing with this?? It sucks.

Hi everyone, I know there have been other posts about this but I'm feeling really insecure right now because all my friends are going to UC's and although I got into UC's as well, UC's are focusing more on research whereas I want to be able to get into the job market and SLO best supports that for me. To be honest, I didn't get UCB which is why I'm doing SLO, because it seems like outside UCLA and UCB Slo is a really good choice for engineering.
I applied EECS for Berkely and I know I'm not getting in.
But I'm feeling really insecure right now because all my friends are talking about Ivies and UCB and all of that, and I just feel like its weird for me to choose SLO and all. Like I know this is just insecurity but could anyone make me feel better about this decision.... I haven't committed yet, but I'm just not sure. Like I feel when I say Cal Poly SLO they would think that my other college applications just didn't go well. I know SLO is such a good school but how do I deal with this environment that I'm in where I feel weird about going to SLO when not many people in my school are?
I would appreciate any advise at all. Thank you so much!

i heard it is likely the first wave of admits may come out this coming friday. does anyone have experience with how the waves work? does admits come out at different times during the day (most likely friday) based off major or do they spread it across multiple days?
i applied for the architecture in the caed btw
UPDATE: GUYS I GOT IN FOR ARCHITECTURE!!! FIRST YEAR BTW

Hi, I got waitlisted at Cal Poly SLO for food science what is the chances you think that I will get off the waitlist? It is my dream school in any help would be greatly appreciated.
😞☺️☺️☺️
*I am a freshman not transfer
r/CalPoly • u/AdPrudent8365 • Mar 25 '26
Guys okay lemme js rant rq
Cal Poly SLO was my top option and if I had gotten in I would’ve gone no matter what. When the first round had been released and I didn’t get my decision I was confused but I was like ok wtv.
Tdy i got waitlisted and im so confused bc like I got into UC Irvine, UC Davis, and UC Berkeley which are arguably much harder to get into. So ya im js annoyed.
My major is psychology btw. My GPA is a 4.5 weighted, and my ECs are actually pretty good
But ya that’s it don’t b disappointed if u didn’t get in, ppl r on one nowadays 😐

hi everyone, i know that a lot of people (including myself) are still "awaiting decision" for cal poly slo. i just wanted to share that i reached out to the admissions office through email and this was part of the response i received:
"All decisions come out as we process them, no rhyme or reason. We had over 80,000 applicants this year and we are working hard to make sure every applicant will have their decision by April 1st!"
i thought that this would be worth sharing, as many people seem to have the impression that the waves are strictly by decision (e.g. acceptances, then waitlists, then denials). i think there's still hope for us!!

My choices at this point are SLO, Davis, UCSB and SDSU. I've ruled out UCSB and SDSU as I hear they are big party schools, especially SDSU has a huge emphasis on Greek life. I am hearing that there is a fair amount of partying at SLO? My mom went there a long time ago and said it was not a party school, but perhaps its reputation changed? I'm a friendly introvert, but not interested in partying. SLO appeals to me for the academics and the outdoor activities like hiking. I don't want to end up there and find the social scene is all parties all the time.

I just got off the waitlist 7/7 at 9:55am PST for ITP in state as an incoming freshman! Just wanna tell anyone incase they were still waiting and loosing hope like me!

Y’all I thought i was cooked when transfers got their acceptances 2 days ago. I checked the student center portal and it says I got accepted but it’s not in the official admit page yet.
LIBERAL ARTS TRANSFERS ASSEMBLE
EDIT: ITS AVAILABLE ON ADMISSIONS PAGE OFFICIALLY. At least on mine lol.

Basically the title. I applied mech e but got in marine engineering at the maritime academy. I emailed the admissions team and they said I could probably switch majors after one semester but I don’t know if it’s worth the risk. Any thoughts?
r/CalPoly • u/OldDude2551 • 11d ago
Which pre-med major is good prep for pre-med, while not being impossible to get into?
The student is 4.0 UW with 18 AP/IBs (13 APs + 5 IBs). CA-based.
Student was thinking of Biological Sciences but heard it is extremely difficult to get admitted.
Looking for some feedback from your experience. Since all of you are likely admitted students, did you all have a strategy in your applications?
r/CalPoly • u/Adorable_Ticket_2474 • Mar 28 '26
I'm a transfer student and my admission status still says "awaiting decision", but I did get an update to my dashboard. I can actually view classes to register for the 2025-2026 quarters in for the "class search" section. Does anyone else have access to this who has not yet been admitted? I'm hoping it's an indicator that I was accepted.

hello, i was recently admitted as an undergraduate for the graduation year 2030 and quite frankly im kind of scared because i had a D first semester for calc that i did not report andinstead put as in progress, and i know im going to get a d this semester. i have to submit my grades july 1st, but im thinking of taking a summer course at my local community college to get a new grade for the same course which is calc ab or possibly changing my d to a a "p" in the transcript. im so scared tho, can anyone confirm or should i just talk to my counciler/college advisor, and i know im going to talk to my calc teacher for anything he can do to support me

Does anyone know when to expect admissions for undergrads to release? I’ve seen people saying that it will release on Monday and others saying it will release on Friday, but when can we really expect it to release? I know nothing is confirmed and no one really knows but I just want a clear answer. Will there also be admission waves?
r/CalPoly • u/teach1abc • Mar 14 '26
My daughter was recently accepted. She has been doing some research about the dorms and saw that cars are not allowed on campus. Is there a place in SLO where she can rent a car space? We know of other colleges that have places for freshman to park cars with a small monthly fee. Without a car, how to people get to off campus jobs, traveling to/from home in the Bay Area, go shopping, etc.?
