News EOSHD here - I am working on a little something...
Here’s my vintage Canon 5D, the classic one running my in-camera raw processor. It isn’t Magic Lantern, this is something new.
It turns out you can run ARM machine code on this megachonk from 2006, and get it to boot from the compact flash card.
It also transpires I can make the 5D Classic and 5D Mark II read LUTs from Adobe Lightroom in-camera, so you never need to go into that horrible software again.
The upshot is I can now port ANY camera film style (Ricoh GR, Pentax, Nikon, Sony - ah maybe not Sony - and Fuji film simulations, yum yum).
I've found a way to completely bypass the .CR2 raw processing, DIGIC Picture Style, and apply my own colour processing to raw sensor data before DIGIC has even woken up.
This is raw in the rawest terms. No canon processing, no noise reduction, every single pixel never touches the standard camera processing and is handled in a 100% custom way.
This code is so close to the metal it's even doing its own DEBAYERING (using the well studied Malvar-He-Cutler method), which makes me chuckle when I think about it.
Enjoy this glimpse of EOSHD 5D Classic Film Engine (The sunset shot is the in-camera "Velvia" film processing) and I’ll keep you updated on progress.
PS… My first 5D was actually the Mark II - I got that and the Panasonic GH1, and the rest is history.

Super interesting! Are you the person behind the website eoshd.com ?? I used to check this site all the time when I came out of my cinematography studies, and Philip Bloom’s too of course! What a time

Love the test shot...well done. Code like this can really enhance in-camera image processing so that you'd need to do little in post. Love those film profiles!

Can this be applied to the EOS M and M2? Started carrying my M2 again as my EDC and am using some film recipes now. Love the idea of this.

5D and 5D II first then I'll look at the EOS M and M2 - I own an M, but not the M2. I'm gonna be looking for beta testers if you would like to try it. You can send me a DM if you like :)

Hey man, seems very interesting!
I have a 5D classic, color checker, the og vsco film presets, RNI presets and a wide variety of recently shot rolls of film (all home scanned but kept the raws too), -if you need any beta testers or film scans for comparisons, hit me up! 🤙

Wow, imagine if i could have this on my 7D! and i love canon colours already
Love the jab at sony colour science too, great cameras bad colours
I'd be curious how your velvia sim stacks up against the real thing, most digital velvias are nothing like the film, or if you can still use the original in camera profiles like landscape

Maybe on your 1D4 as well... The 1D cameras never got Magic Lantern really... Mine doesn't use any ML code, it's a new thing - so it could be that it opens up some of the other models as well. Newer stuff like EOS R8 is more tricky though

This seems quite interesting. Would love to see more image examples. What's the plan with the code? Will you open source it?
