Especially since the pandemic we have been seeing cheap no-name cameras that offer unbelievable specs (50MP, 8k video), here is a guide on how to spot and avoid them!:
What is a Scamera?:
Scameras are cheap cameras, usually using backup/webcam camera modules, and putting them into shapes that look like camcorders, pocketable Point & Shoots, and interchangeable lens cameras. They often have very high specs, that are not genuine, such as 64MP upscaled from 1 to 4MP (so you get files the size of a 3.5k camera, but with the detail level of the original 2008 iPhone).
Scameras are also often very unreliable, the immense number of people coming here needing help fixing or just returning these cameras (especially post-christmas) is why I am making this post.
Scameras can often be distinguished by the miniscule lenses, I'll try to show that in a comment of this post.
A reliable way can be to check the brand:
Here are known non-scam brands:
Canon
Fujifilm
Hasselblad
Kodak (Kodak make cameras that are close in price to many scameras, and they aren't amazing or super reliable, but they are worlds better than scam brands).
Leica
Nikon
Olympus / OM Systems
Panasonic / Lumix
Pentax
Pixii
Ricoh
Sigma
Sony
Here are known scam brands:
AgfaPhoto (Digital cameras)
Kreate
Yashica
Vivitar
Yixinxin
Yatao
Captainbear
Minolta
NBD
G-Anica
Vivitar, Yashica, and Minolta were once real brands that have now gone bankrupt and the people renting their names sell scameras.
Agfa does make real film and film cameras, but also scam digital cameras.

Hereās my vintage Canon 5D, the classic one running my in-camera raw processor. It isnāt Magic Lantern, this is something new.
It turns out you can run ARM machine code on this megachonk from 2006, and get it to boot from the compact flash card.
It also transpires I can make the 5D Classic and 5D Mark II read LUTs from Adobe Lightroom in-camera, so you never need to go into that horrible software again.
The upshot is I can now port ANY camera film style (Ricoh GR, Pentax, Nikon, Sony - ah maybe not Sony - and Fuji film simulations, yum yum).
I've found a way to completely bypass the .CR2 raw processing, DIGIC Picture Style, and apply my own colour processing to raw sensor data before DIGIC has even woken up.
This is raw in the rawest terms. No canon processing, no noise reduction, every single pixel never touches the standard camera processing and is handled in a 100% custom way.
This code is so close to the metal it's even doing its own DEBAYERING (using the well studied Malvar-He-Cutler method), which makes me chuckle when I think about it.
Enjoy this glimpse of EOSHD 5D Classic Film Engine (The sunset shot is the in-camera "Velvia" film processing) and Iāll keep you updated on progress.
PS⦠My first 5D was actually the Mark II - I got that and the Panasonic GH1, and the rest is history.

budget: $300ā600 cad ideally, up to $1,000 cad maximum. this budget should cover the camera body and at least one suitable portrait lens. i'm open to buying accessories separately if necessary.
country: canada (quebec).
condition: new or used. i'm open to buying used if it offers better value.
type of camera: mirrorless or dslr. i'm open to recommendations.
intended use: photography.
if photography; what style: primarily portrait photography, especially taking pictures of my girlfriend. i'd like professional-looking results with sharp details, natural skin tones, and nice background blur.
if video what style: n/a.
what features do you absolutely need: good image quality and the ability to take flattering portraits. ideally, reliable autofocus and good low-light performance.
what features would be nice to have: eye autofocus, a nice viewfinder, interchangeable lenses, and a system with affordable lens options for future upgrades.
portability: preferably something compact enough to carry in a small bag or with a shoulder strap for outdoor portraits and casual outings.
cameras you're considering: i'm a beginner, so i don't have specific models in mind yet. i'd appreciate recommendations for the best camera body and lens combination within my budget, including older used models that still perform well.
cameras you already have: none.
notes: i'm mainly interested in getting the best possible portrait photos for my budget rather than buying the newest camera. i'm also wondering whether it's better to spend more of my budget on the lens rather than the camera body. any recommendations for good used camera and portrait lens combinations would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I just bought this vivitar V3300SE 35mm film camera for class but it appears to not work no matter how I tried searching online. I did ask the seller if the camera worked and all they said was it was all in the description. The description only said the camera name, and that the thumb switch moves freely. Ofc I didn't know what that meant bc I'm in a intro class. So I bought it thinking the camera works and the switch is just loose. I snap it once after changing batteries and the camera flap is stuck, the thumb switch turns out doesnt move the film. So can this camera be saved or did I just loose money and time?

I found this camera among my uncle's belongings shortly after he passed away during COVID in 2020. I've kept it safe on my shelf for the last six years, and only just thought of sharing it here
Itās a 1973 Yashica Electro 35 GSN, it was the first camera ever with a stepless electronic shutter. Built like an absolute tank
This exact model is the camera Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) carries around in Amazing SpiderMan (2012)

Hey guys, I recently found an old digital camera that wasnāt turning on unless it was plugged into a charger. I assumed the battery was dead, so I ordered a new one. The new battery came in and the camera powers on fine now, but now everything on screen looks super blurry. Does anyone know how to fix the focus issue or what might be the problem???
Another thing is when I see the menu itās perfectly fineā¦
EDIT: I gave it a few smacks but nothing changes. It also dies out quickly?? Even tho I gave it a new battery

⢠ā Budget: $100-$600 CAD / AUD
⢠ā Country: Canada / Australia
⢠ā Condition: used is fine
⢠ā Type of Camera: Lumix S5ii
⢠ā Intended use: bright snowboard filming
⢠ā If photography; what style:
⢠ā If video what style: action sports and documentary
⢠ā What features do you absolutely need: bright. Live LUT view.
⢠ā Portability: small and light is nice but I want a big screen ideally.
⢠ā Cameras you're considering:
⢠ā Cameras you already have: Lumix S5ii
⢠ā Notes:
Iām very uneducated on external monitors. Iāve got a Lumix S5ii mainly shooting video, snowboarding on bright sunny days, or interviews for documentaries. Iām hoping to get the cheapest possible model that doesnāt compromise on all the features. Brightness, live LUT view, ideally touch screen. I also have seen that some external monitors have big ahh batteries that you can attach on the back which I assume power both the monitor and the camera. This seems epic. Would love any and all recommendations. Thanks!

Hi all! My husband and I are expecting our first child in the spring. He recently expressed that he thinks heāll be the type to take lots of pictures and videos just like his grandfather and father did when he was growing up. The thing is, I know he hates carrying around his phone and having it in his hand when heād rather be present. So I thought Iād get him an actual camera for Christmas! Ease of use and picture quality would be the most important thing to him. Heās not the type to get super technical with gadgets and tech - he wants something reliable and good quality but doesnāt need top of the line.
Budget: I was thinking around $200 but please let me know if thatās unrealistic
Country: we are in the US
Condition: new
Type of camera: something digital that makes it easy to store pictures on an external hard drive
Intended use: photo and video for family memories
Absolutely need: something that is easy to learn to use and has easy transfer of pictures
Please let me know if you have any suggestions!
Edit: jeez, I had no idea a digital camera was so expensive these days. Thanks for the heads up! I will consider maybe doing a group gift with his parents. Are used cameras an option?

Budget: ā¬1,000 ā ā¬1,200 (Buying on Black Friday, so slightly higher MSRP options are welcome if they might drop into range).
Country: Germany / Europe.
Condition: New or open-box preferred.
Type of Camera: Mirrorless.
Primary Use: Video (My own YouTube videos & professional video client work).
Experience Level: Beginner / First real camera (no prior hands-on experience).
Current Considerations: Sony A6700.
Key Requirements:
Highly upgradeable and future-proof system (lenses, accessories, etc.) without needing to replace the camera body soon.
Good autofocus and solid video features for client work.
Additional Details:
Hello! As outlined above, I'm looking for a solid mirrorless camera primarily for video work (YouTube + client projects). Since I plan to purchase during Black Friday, I'm open to models slightly above my ā¬1.2k budget in case of sales. My top priority is investing in a lens system/ecosystem that allows me to upgrade over time. Would love to hear your advice and recommendations!
Thanks.

Picked up a Nikon D3100 at a thrift store for twenty bucks. Body only, no lens, but the shutter fires and the sensor looks clean enough. I shoot trail photos on a budget mirrorless for reference and graphic work, so I grabbed this as a backup or maybe a way to use some older Nikon glass. The grip feels tacky and there's dust in the viewfinder. No idea on shutter count since I can't find a free tool that reads it without making an account.
Battery holds a charge but dies quicker than expected, maybe two hundred shots. Servicing it would probably cost more than I paid, so I'm wondering if it's worth using as is until it quits, or if there's any market for beat up entry level DSLRs. I've seen people here fix up old gear, but mostly higher end stuff. Not trying to make money off it, just figuring out if it belongs in my bag or if I should pass it along. Anyone run these budget bodies into the ground instead of fixing them?

Hey there,
I am a professional photographer and videographer currently using the Sony Alpha 9. My main line of work is events, sports and corporate shoots.
The things I like about the camera:
- Autofocus is insanely fast and locks onto any eye quickly
- That top left button is really handy and I find myself using it a lot
- Battery life is amazing, can easily take 2000 shots with the electronic shutter with no issue
- Stacked sensor makes shooting almost anywhere a breeze
- Image quality is impressive
The things making me consider upgrading:
- Terrible colour separation on RAW files, makes it difficult to quickly edit and export for shoots
- Video is quite mushy
- No anti flicker, impossible to shoot indoors
- Autofocus is unreliable indoors in darker halls
- Anything above 2000 iso becomes fairly unusable and colours turn to mush, massive loss of detail
- Lack of reliable FTP
- Below average tracking features
- NO SLOG!!!!!!
- 24mp makes it difficult to crop
Im currently based in Australia and I have a budget of below 3.8k second hand (aud)
Im considering the Sony Alpha 1, Sony Alpha 7 V, Sony Alpha 7 R V
Concerns I have about the alpha 1:
- Colour separation and saturation is reportedly less than the A7RV
- Older AF system (does this matter??) and processing unit (image processing affected??)
- Overheating
- Issues when paired with the Sony 200-600mm
Concerns I have about the Alpha 7 R V:
- Massive rolling shutter (does this matter??)
- Noise perfomance
- Anti flicker mehh?
Concerns I have about the Sony A7V (same price as the A1):
- Readout speed is much more than the A1 and A9
- Video is cropped A LOT
As of right now the A7RV is cheapest and the A7V and A1 are priced the same. As an event and sports shooter that captures both video and photo, which camera is best for me?
Is the age on the A1 alongside lack of AI a concern?
Any other camera recommendations?
Cheers
(1) Budget, country, and currency: Australia, 3900, aud
(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? a9, mentioned above
(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? everything that moves
(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? both

Hello everyone!
Was feeling a bit bored today and decided to fully tear down my old legendary Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1.
The camera had been sitting around unused for a while (it had a lens/autofocus issue), so instead of letting it collect dust in a drawer, I completely disassembled it. I extracted that massive APS-C sensor block and the iconic Carl Zeiss lens to turn them into a cool custom desk display / showpiece.
It's pretty wild to see the inner engineering of a mid-2000s bridge camera up close ā that giant sensor assembly really shows how ahead of its time the R1 was back in 2005.
Has anyone else done something similar with their retired vintage gear or turned old camera parts into desk ornaments? Would love to see your builds!

So I have a tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 Nikon, which has started to show the infamous squeaking. Focus is sticky at certain parts and wont move sometimes. This is both noticed in af, where the motor keeps trying to push it and as soon as i notice i switch af to off, and its also seen in manual focus, where in order to see the distance reading move i have to twist the focus ring like 15 kilometers. Other times its working perfect, and othertimes it shows this behaviour. Sometimes pointing it up makes it go away, so I am pretty sure its just something has made its way into the lens. For a really small period of time i think it had gone to the zoom ring since i felt something on it and focus was fine. So what am trying to get to is: If this is a repair that does not need parts, and if you are a camera repair technitian, how much would you charge for repair?

Hello everyone!
Iām looking for a camera to take with me whilst travelling, I am a beginner and only use my iPhone for pictures and videos whilst travelling but the quality isnāt as sharp as I would like.
Iām looking for a camera that will take sharp pictures ideal for personal use, e.g. creating a printed photo book, posting to social media etc.
Budget: 1,500AUD (not including accessories)
Country: Australia
Condition: New/Used doesnāt matter
Type of Camera: Point and Shoot
Intended use: Mainly photography, but wouldnāt mind video capabilities that arenāt too bad.
Would like to mainly use for travel, capture scenery and streets, with of course some lovely personal shots too.
What features do you absolutely need/ would be nice to have: n/a
Portability: Iād prefer it to be small and compact, can fit in a small handbag whilst travelling
Cameras you're considering:
- Canon G7x Mark III
- LUMIX TZ99
- Sony A6000
Cameras you already have: Honestly Iām a beginner and usually just use my iPhone for photos while travelling. I do own some old digital cameras but donāt use them :)
Thank you in advance everyone! I look forward to your recommendations :) !
