Teacher Vs Consultant

Hello, I've been applying for jobs in China and keep seeing jobs listings with the word "consultant" in the title, when the job is essentially a teaching job. I.E. Essay Consultant, English Consultant, Linguistic Consultant. But really their job duties are "help with a curriculum" and "teach x amount of kids."

What exactly is the difference between the two? My guess is that a consultant is a fancy word for Training institutes to call their tutors but I want to know if I'm right or not. Thank you for any information!

There are a few people who do this. It's a variation of the old "business visa" ploy to hire people illegally to teach. If you're caught working and don't have a work visa, you'll face the same consequences as someone who's teaching on a tourist visa.

Sorry, are you referring to the "M" business visa verses the "Z" working visa? These companies will try to get you to do an m visa instead of a z?

They're keeping positions open for people who don't have a standard z-visa which allows teaching. Essentially, people without credentials or from countries where teaching English as a second language is not allowed (in most provinces).

In some cases, consulting work for schools is allowed if you're self-employed whereas actually teaching could land you in trouble. I'm guessing that they want an actual teacher but don't have the means or don't want to fool with a z-visa. Someone was on one of these china job subreddits talking about it a month or so ago.

yes, I think you're right. A way to get around the visa restrictions.
