Hello, I've been applying for jobs in China and keep seeing jobs listings with the word "consultant" in the title, when the job is essentially a teaching job. I.E. Essay Consultant, English Consultant, Linguistic Consultant. But really their job duties are "help with a curriculum" and "teach x amount of kids."

So let’s say I want to move from my 5 years of experience BtoB salesperson job in France to China and I don’t wanna become an english/french teacher long term. Some background: 5 years of experience in business management, currently based in Beijing, earning the equivalent of about HK$20k/month.

I received an offer from an AI unicorn in Hong Kong for an officer-level role: HK$45k/month x 13, with a hybrid arrangement, so I wouldn’t have had to relocate right away.

I turned it down for three reasons:

1. The package felt low for an officer-level role, also I was interviewing with other tech giants who offered way more than this.
2. I was worried about the cost of living if I eventually had to move to HK.
3. The HR mentioned that their layoff rate last year was 70%, which made the job feel very unstable.

The thing is, I see HK as a good first step toward working abroad, and I haven’t received a better offer since. Now I’m second-guessing myself.

I'm a native English speaker from the United States who holds a US passport. I also have a BA in humanities and TESOL certified, with about five years of teaching experience in the continuing education department at an at IVY league college in the states, private tutoring, and just recently completed working in Turkey as an EFL instructor this past summer. I'm back in the states now and will start grad school in the fall of '27, however, in the meantime, I'd ideally like to go back overseas to get back into teaching, and chase the forecast, as I really don't want to be on the east coast of the United States this winter. That said, I'd ideally like to find a warmer destination that I could spend the winter until June, when I'll head back to Turkey for the summer, then back to the states to return to university.

Sino-Global Development Foundation is directly supervised by the Chinese Ministry of Education, you know what this means).The old lady in charge is called Dianna Li Su. (74 years old, used to be a red guard during the Cultural Revolution, never graduated from high school).

Do not sign a contract with them unless you need the money for life-saving surgery. The old lady in charge will ask you some seriously weird and unprofessional questions during the interview. Also, know that this organization is connected to the Chinese government.

Know that they have a so-called cooperation program with an American high school in Vermont called Lynton Institute, basically they paid Lyndon to make it a "joint cooperation program" to scam more Chinese students into paying to go in. 1. I was told by people working there that that you probably will not be paid all of your money.  In teaching jobs, July and August are vacation months.  Therefore, they probably will not be in the mood to pay you after June.
2. Know that the old lady in charge is highly involved and will interfere in almost everything you do despite the fact that you are not working directly for her in Beijing, and she will verbally abuse you, if necessary. She will promise you that the office hours are optional. This is done to trick you into agreeing to work for them. Once you get in, they will make you sit in the office all day long, plus you are forced to supervise the students in their night self-study sessions at least twice a week(from 6-10 pm) without overtime pay. Her job postings also state that you will be working at a "top public school." with a lot of corruption, most of the kids there are troublemakers with wealthy parents that paid to get in. And if they do a poor job of learning, you are to be blamed and berated.
3. Also, payments are usually delayed a month, so your first payment won't come until October, and your last payment should be in September.  This means you may miss three payments after school lets out in June: the July, August and September payments.  That's 25% of your contract.
4. They put a lot of pressure on Speaking/Listening, TOEFL, IELTS, and AP Teachers, threatening to fire you and verbally abusing you if a certain percentage of your students may not do well on the exams.
5. Textbooks are not provided(except for certain math and science classes) because of ideological differences, and if you complain they'll tell you that it's not the school's problem, you are supposed to come up with your own materials
6. Most of the people there will be somewhat xenophobic, abusive, and close-minded. Virtually none of the Chinese teachers/staff have spent time abroad(because these schools don't trust these people) or speak good English. Some of the administrative personnel may expect you to be like those obedient Chinese teachers that never speak up when they have to work 12 hours a day/get berated all day long/not receive salaries on time.
7. Know that the turnover rates at these schools are super high. Based on what I know, on any given year at least 30-40% of the Chinese and 70-80% of the foreign teachers leave. This is why you see them posting ads trying to find teachers all the time.

Good luck also getting airfare reimbursement at the end of your contract.

Maybe you can hire a lawyer, and you think you will simply brush up on the relevant Chinese laws and sue Sino-Global Education Foundation (SGEF) in a Chinese court. Well, based on what I know about 30-40% of the employees have sued them in the past and came back empty-handed. And remember, this organization is backed by the Chinese government, and you know what that means.

About the work you will do: if you can imagine what an educational sweatshop is. . . .  If the words "browbeating," "isolation," "amorality," "degradation," "deception" appeal to you. . . .  Imagine playing a game of chess in which the pieces are lies and the board is one year of your lifespan. . . . You will be verbally abused, your contract will be violated, and you will be forced to teach more than 25 hours a week when they only promised 18 at the most.

If you'd like to travel to a very foreign country, be ripped off, and end up back in the same place you were a year ago career-wise, signing with Sino-Global Education/Development Foundation is probably a good way to go.  Educationally speaking, you might not meet your teaching goals, but you will surely get schooled.

I'm currently learning Mandarin at a language institute and will take the HSK 1 in January. My plan is to do a Master's in China, but before committing several years (and a serious amount of money) to it, I want to understand what really happens after graduation.

My core question: as a foreigner with a Master's from a Chinese university, can I realistically find a job and stay in China? Or are opportunities so scarce that most people end up going home feeling like the degree led nowhere?

So I'd love to hear how it works in real life:

1. If you studied in China as a foreigner, what happened after you graduated? Did you stay, how long did the job hunt take, and how did you land your first offer?

2. Which industries and roles are actually open to foreign grads right now, and what starting salary is realistic? Since I'm not a native English speaker, I assume teaching English is off the table. Is that right?

3. What Chinese level do employers really expect? Is HSK 5 or 6 the real threshold, or does it depend on the role?

4. How much do the university, the field of study and the city matter? Is it noticeably easier in Shanghai, Shenzhen or Guangzhou?

5. Are companies generally willing to sponsor a fresh graduate's work permit, or do many of them (especially smaller ones) avoid the paperwork?

6. If staying doesn't work out, how much is a Chinese Master's plus good Mandarin worth back home or elsewhere, for example with Chinese companies operating in North Africa or the Middle East?

Personal stories, including the ones that didn't go well, would help me far more than a general "it depends." And if you were in my shoes today, what would you do differently?
