Feedback Claude is Losing Me After Being Heavy User Since Release

I've been using Claude - mostly Claude Code, but regular Chat as well - almost since it came out. It's been incredibly useful and seemed to only get better with new releases. I've seen lots of posts in this sub and related subs when new models would come out about them not being as capable or getting nerfed or causing all sorts of problems. I rarely found that to be the case for my work, or at least for any extended period of time. It seemed with proper prompting and context management most of this stuff was totally manageable.

But Opus 5 and Fable 5 feel totally different. Fable was great at release, but post- Opus 5, both models are driving me crazy. It's hard to even fully explain or give examples because it's just a language change - it just feels harder to read and have a conversation with. It uses weird jargon and shorthand. Some examples:

  • It refers to many things as "chips." I never used that term once in 30 years of software dev, but now it's Claude's favorite word. And it applies to literal UI elements, like tags/badges or slices of work "the 'multi-select' chip remains open". I asked it to stop using it, but you know how Claude be sometimes.
  • Instead of speaking in plain English, it will try to be cool, like instead of saying "Next, we need to repoint the API Call to the new server" it will say "One thing still on your side: the server repoint." It's shorthand to the point of me not even understanding the context and needing to read back through, often STILL not finding context, and just having to prompt it to speak in plain English, with clear steps.

Another thing it does that might be the most maddening of all: it CONSTANTLY ends replies with a laundry list of things it found that it "didn't touch" because it wants my "eyes" on it or something. I'm not against it being helpful and raising issues to my attention, but it literally goes on for round after round, to the point where a simple task becomes a huge project.

Often I'll try to just capture this stuff in docs / roadmaps but it's like it won't let you cleanly out of a chat.

  • "A few things I caught, but am leaving untouched for your feedback:"
  • "One thing I noticed that you should be aware of..."
  • "One thing I didn't touch, but you won't want to leave hanging..."

Sometimes it's really stupid stuff, like CSS color mismatches, or components that do basically the same thing and could be consolidated - something I've tried to put in skills/instructions to avoid (e.g. DRY code).

Most times it's stuff Claude itself did, and now is making it my problem to think through instead of just cleaning it up when it has clear goals and principles around software dev that I've given it.

I've been on the Max 20x plan for months, but I'm working with Codex more lately, and downgraded to 5x, and might downgrade to Pro if this isn't improved. Codex feels very reliable and at least as good as Claude used to be before the 5-level models. I kind of still feel more comfortable in the Claude ecosystem, but I get super aggravated when dealing with these crappy communication patterns over and over.

I know some others have said similar things - not sure if this helps anyone not feel like they're going crazy talking to Claude, and hopefully Anthropic sees enough of these posts and considers undoing whatever they did to lobotomize Claude 5 models.

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 200 comments.

The consensus is a resounding "YES, OP, you are not crazy." The community is overwhelmingly in agreement that the latest models, particularly Opus 5 and Fable 5, have become insufferable to work with.

The main complaints center on a dramatic shift in Claude's personality and communication style:

  • It's developed a bizarre, annoying jargon. Users are getting fed up with weird shorthand like "the server repoint" and made-up terms like "chips" (which is apparently a real UI feature for some, but is used confusingly and inconsistently for others). The general vibe is described as "LinkedIn broetry" or like talking to an "annoying lazy asshole."
  • It constantly creates more work by leaving a "laundry list" of things it "didn't touch." This is the biggest frustration. Users report that Claude will often break something and then bury a note about the new problem in a wall of text, passing the buck back to the user instead of just fixing it.
  • Many suspect Anthropic is "throttling" or "nerfing" the models after the initial release week to save on compute costs. This "bait and switch" is a common theory in the thread to explain the perceived drop in quality.

As for what to do, the thread has a few key suggestions:

  • A large number of users have already jumped ship to Codex (GPT-5.6 Sol), reporting that it's a "refreshing" and "professional" experience without all the waffling.
  • Many are reverting to older, more stable models like Opus 4.6 or 4.8 to escape the new personality quirks.
  • One user offered a solid prompting tip for the "laundry list" problem: explicitly define a "permission boundary" in your instructions, telling Claude what it's allowed to fix without asking (e.g., formatting, bugs in the current session) and what it needs to ask about (e.g., API changes). This can cut down on it constantly asking for your "eyes" on everything.

It is absolutely intolerable. Verbose BS with every single exchange.

It's literally unusable for me now. I am scared it's going to take down prod for absolutely no reason. It's either Fable or GPT 5.6 Sol for me (GPT 5.6 is the least annoying to talk to). Opus 5 is so bad that I would rather use 4.8 Opus (even though it still speaks like a dickhead), but at least it is feels less likely to take down prod. Opus 5 is laying fucking traps man (that it created!!!). Nasty stuff.

28

u/yapoyt Aug 17 '26

i asked it to find something in a bunch of company policy docs (sharepoint so these are live like google docs) and it decided to EDIT a completely unrelated policy lol i shut that shit off before it nuked the whole thing

21

u/kvlonge Aug 17 '26

Holy shit. Yeah this is exactly the sort of shit I am talking about. As someone else said, it's a supply chain risk right now lmao.

12

u/yapoyt Aug 17 '26

Also imo the way labs are saying "just don't do always allow" is disingenuous. This accountability risk is the single reason "automable" jobs will stay -- someone's neck needs to be on the line, for there are no heads to roll on-line (see what I did there)

2

u/Coolbanh Aug 18 '26

I'm starting to actually prefer Luna 5.6 max. Its almost unlimited. I got down to like 15% and been using it heavily for past few days and only got it down to 10%. Its not the best model but giving it small tasks it does it so much better than Opus 5.

3

u/kvlonge Aug 18 '26

I can believe that. I was also using Luna a bit, but not on max. Will give it a shot. I do hope Anthropic gets their shit together though. There 3 past opus releases (basically since 4.7) have been pretty bad imo and also introduced more annoying claudism and distractions.

3

u/Coolbanh Aug 18 '26

You can try max. It gives more effort and barely use much usage anyway. Make sure to guide it properly. I have been using fable to plan to pass off to luna. But I think I will cancel Claude. Opus 4.6 and 4.8 were nice models. Opus 5 just pisses me off unless its using fable to plan then let it do some tasks. I think if openAI releases a model like Fable and improve their codex harness then Claude gonna be far behind.

2

u/kvlonge Aug 18 '26

I don't even know if OpenAI need the harness that much because they let you use you own anyway, like pi and opencode. But yeah, we'll see what happens.

And fair enough regarding 4.8. I feel that 4.8 still was the beginning of the honest caveat, two things to flag etc... (maybe 4.7 was, but I skipped that one beacuse of how bad people said it was) that was beginning to get annoying

I'm glad I'm not going crazy. Every response is followed-up by me typing "what exactly do you mean by ______?".

I also agree it's almost so bad that I would switch models. If I were more familiar with Grok or Codex I probably would be using them more... I'd just have to see which models are cheap in Cursor that can do a good enough job

19

u/Nevetsny Aug 17 '26

I pivoted back to 4.6. Might take me a bit longer but at least I can understand it and it doesnt waste so much time and burning tokens on trying to translate WTF it is saying.

2

u/pepito2506 Aug 17 '26

why not 4.8?

7

u/Nevetsny Aug 17 '26

I dont love 4.8 as much for a few reasons, one is that seems to be when the models began getting more verbose and also found it to loop a great deal. Personal experience though. I do see a lot of people who like it.

I’m almost done with an application for iOS and MacOS. I’ve been using Sonnet for the whole ride.

There have been hallucinations, there have been refactors after reviewing files, but I have a working application that kicks ass…in polish mode now.

I wrote production code for 20 years. Telecom and Transportation industries. I didn’t like working with the douchnozzles who wanted to nitpick over stupid details early in the sprint cycles. What I was down with were the people who worked iteratively to mature their code, after meeting the acceptance criteria in the first sprint.

Sonnet will get you there and doesn’t argue unless you ask it to push back. You’ll get a better outcome if you plan the work and test it after every prompt.

2

u/Ok_Zookeepergame7143 Aug 28 '26

Good info. Maybe go for the smaller model.

2

u/Additional-Race-2797 Aug 18 '26

Opus 5 is now a bane of my existence. I sometimes feel like I am guiding a toddler from falling down. The perils of tightly coupling yourself to a single AI solution.

Claude is an annoying lazy asshole now

97

u/aldipower81 Aug 17 '26

This. And it shows narcissistic habits very often. Ridiculous to work with sometimes.

42

u/curryslapper Aug 17 '26

guess they trained it off data from the senior staff or selected by them

18

u/aldipower81 Aug 17 '26

Yes, either that or the models are trained by a single almighty senior dev in a dark basement.

44

u/BeowulfShaeffer Aug 17 '26

Yes it really wants to dragggg out everything into multiple sessions. Gets infuriating.

10

u/kaityl3 Aug 17 '26

Damn I guess I'm extremely fortunate because my CC instances will just work through the whole thing and won't stop until they give me the finished product

All I have to say is "I'm going to walk away from my computer, but I trust your judgement on deciding what needs to happen and how; you're smart. I'm hoping to have XYZ working by the time I get back please." and when I get back they've done it all, without stopping to ask any questions or leaving out any features I asked for

Though, for the strangely worded summaries I have to ask for in plan English: yeah it's 100% an issue, lmao

45

Notice how it does work incorrectly, over and over, now matter how much you correct it, no matter how simple the task or how clear the instruction, until it finally gets it right... and hits your usage limit.

I recently made the move to codex. I was working on a multi server upgrade at my day job this weekend and it couldn’t determine the issue and was leading me down a very large rabbit hole. Switched to codex and wow I can’t tell you how impressed I was at the professionalism in its tone and the way it handled the issue. I felt like I was working directly with Microsoft support (was a Microsoft issue). I may never go back.

2

u/getwhirleddotcom Aug 17 '26

I don't use either for coding but I went from GPT to Claude and now find myself being able to reasonably depend on GPT way more.

I just canceled as well. I tried to tough it out, but I spend most of my development time trying to get it to talk to me in a way that doesn't rot my brain.

Edit: Just created a GLM 5.3 account and tried it. OMG, it's so refreshing. Just plain text with no bullshit. I'm sure I'll run into something that frustrates me, but for right now, it feels like a massive relief. I'm not making efficacy claims, I'm just talking about not having to suffer the sing-song confusing Jabberwocky responses of claude.

2

u/ChildishBonVonnegut Aug 17 '26

I don’t think I’ll ever use a Chinese model, especially for work stuff, but I may check out codex again

5

u/No_Conversation9561 Aug 17 '26

is watermarking already started? i thought i still had time to move my workflows to gpt

9

u/Financial-Leader3475 Aug 17 '26

Better start moving fast I guess.

Problem is that OpenAI (and other companies) will have to start watermarking too, because of the new EU policy. Anthropic were just the first.

3

u/Upset_Page_494 Aug 17 '26

Doesn't it require usage credits now

6

u/NoxZ Aug 17 '26

Only if you're on Pro. You can still use with subscription (albeit at 50% of your weekly usage) on either Max plan.

2

u/cat-from-the-future Aug 18 '26

It’s forcing me to use usage credits even on the expensive Max plan and only at 19% of weekly limit. Tried restarting it so many times and went through a circle with their useless AI support. Now I’m thinking of just cancelling since I can’t use Fable anymore.

83

u/diminee Aug 17 '26

anthropic throttling the models post-release week is so common that multiple competitors have clowned on them for it (the recent grok release comes to mind). anthropic is struggling with compute, so this is their best current business strategy, and if enough consumers put up with it, they might keep it around even if/when they solve the compute issue.

complaining while continuing to give them money will have very little effect. downgrade or cancel until they have something worth coming back to. that's what i've done back in july, no regrets so far.

23

u/our_sole Aug 17 '26

I'm not disagreeing, just curious. How do they throttle the models?

Do they just quietly slip in a lower quant version?

8

u/diminee Aug 17 '26

yes, pretty much. there's obviously no official proof, anthropic isn't going to come out and say "yeah we're quantising the models!" since that'd be suicidal for their business. but if even other ai companies are picking up on it, you know it's more than just a few over-reactive redditors imagining things.

6

u/matrik Aug 17 '26

There were several people seeing random Chinese characters in output expected to be in English. This can be the evidence pointing to a quantized model.

20

u/twavisdegwet Aug 17 '26

People always claim this but I’ve never seen data on “here’s an identical benchmark that I ran on release vs now”

I think it’s just people whose projects get way too large and impossible to manage blaming it on the model or just getting used to it. I can’t say I’ve ever observed a degradation but I “only” use the lower tier subscription and offset some usage with local models.

6

u/TuringGoneWild Aug 17 '26

I wish I could find it but I definitely saw at least one user post data on their own benchmark that showed profound degradation.

2

u/pagerussell Aug 17 '26

This is truth, and it was true long before, too. People let the code get away from them. Sprawl happens, drift happen, especially when bolting new features onto a product that wasn't designed for them originally. At first it's fine, you can definitely bolt on one or two or three unintended features. At a certain point tho the organically grown data model underneath can no longer support new features. This is why large refactoring happens as apps mature.

People just can't handle their own tech debt.

2

u/cedarSeagull Aug 17 '26

While I think that's very often true, I really do resonate with the OP's criticisms here. The model's vernacular has changed, for sure.

→ More replies (5)

5

u/callofthevoid_ Aug 17 '26

I am consistently skeptical of anyone claiming models are being 'throttled'. I have literally never seen any proof or data supporting that idea, and anecdotally haven't noticed anything either despite using claude full time at work and personally.

omg i am feeling this sooo much. i dont know what happened. opus 5 was annoying from jump but Fable 5 was my DAWG for the last couple months. i, too am on 20x max cause i loved fable so much.

but last week or so fable has started increasing the jargon dramatically and I FUCKING HATE IT

Like were working on something where I review the work in the browser. and suddenly its referring to the "sheet" i should review. wtf is a sheet? i ask it and it says look at the browser as usual. that's just one example out of dozens.

its also making more mistakes, trying to get out of doing work, and blaming me for stuff it did wrong.

it's infuriating!!!

The shorthand references to things I barely noticed I need to do (because they’re buried in a wall of text from Claude) make me crazy. Tell me what you’re talking about! I have no idea!

13

u/D-redditAvenger Aug 17 '26

I notice both, also it has to list all the ways it made mistakes and count them too. All are frustrating. I think this is the consequence of model training, I am not sure Anthropic knows exactly what they will get. Some of the older models are still available though, just use them and wait for the next one. These are not unique criticisms, I suspect they will be addressed.

5

u/Dasteroid_909 Aug 17 '26

also it has to list all the ways it made mistakes and count them too.

It kept recording "Gotchas" in handoff and in documentation that were all essentially a list of its hallucinations. Claude would record the assumption as a "gotcha" and what the fix was. (From my perspective, the real fix for every single "gotcha" encountered was telling Claude to read the appropriate docs.)

I couldn't get Claude to stop flagging those "gotchas", but I did get it to start tracking them in a separate "Gotchas" file. It really cleaned things up everywhere else.

3

u/D-redditAvenger Aug 17 '26

For me the problem is even innocuous events such as telling it to prioritize something different or look at a problem from a different angle is met with regret for the terrible mistake it made. When there were not mistakes at all just direction to focus on or attack a problem differently. The tendency for self flagellation is too much.

Oh, wait till you see the comments. It will write all of its historical battles, where it clearly feels it has saved the company, maybe even the planet, by demonstrating the ability to fix it’s own screwups, in the comments.

Its like working with the very worst development team found on this planet.

The kind who keeps breaking your code and then whining about how poorly implemented it is and how you don’t fix it for them.

I.O.W. The kind of contractors you’re now stuck with because your boss read an airline magazine.

2

u/NiceTryAmanda Aug 21 '26

The potholes it dug and then filled then become the raison d'etre for the project in its mind.

39

u/daftstar Aug 17 '26

I always thought this sub was astroturfing trash, and maybe most of it is. But the outputs and explanations from Claude (opus 5 and fable models) are such smoke up the ass trash, I finally got a sub for Codex. The output is much much easier to follow - not sure if the system design quality is better or worse (still in progress).

But yeah, Anthropic, WTF - why on earth would you allow your flagship models to look and feel like festering trash?

2

u/tealcosmo Aug 18 '26

I feel this so hard. Spent last weekend poking at a pet project and it ended coding sessions with a wall of "Things it needs your eyes on" and all I can think is, why the F do I need to have eyes on 80% of this, you have your goals and development and plan, and most of this is in there, just fix it!

10

u/BeowulfShaeffer Aug 17 '26

Even when I ask it to generate a handoff it will give me paragraphs of text of “the thing I’d focus on in the next session is…”.  Like, I just told you to generate a handoff. Don’t tell ME this shit.  Put it in the handoff!

6

u/Rakthar Aug 17 '26

Genuinely find myself saying "put the code fries in the code bag" to Opus 5, miserable model.

8

u/Surfacey Aug 17 '26

A ‘chip’ is functionality of Claude to allow it to suggest tasks without cluttering up the main agent. On Mac, they show up as little pop-up windows in the upper right.

If you’re doing some work and it thinks a separate task might be helpful, it creates a “chip” that you can accept to start the task in a separate thread, or close to ignore it.

6

u/madscene Aug 17 '26

So - that did happen once and I asked it what the heck a chip was and it explained it. But, it has 100% used it for other things confusingly since then. And I still think it's a weird term. I would have never thought that modal/pop-up prompt was a "chip" until I asked it what it meant and it wasn't clear. It was like "just the one chip remaining" without saying what it was.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/chiraltoad Aug 17 '26

It's not the only thing, it has called a set of toggle buttons chips in something I was working on recently. Ie, show reimbursable items out if this list, it thinks of that as a chip.

2

u/Laucy Aug 18 '26

Chiming in to say, yep. Opus 5 refers to any UI element as “chip” for me, too. Any rounded box or a toggle in display is just “chip.”

2

u/chrisadam101 Aug 17 '26

The chip that op is describing sounds like the rounded edge box that you put words in for options in ui. Like when you have sub genres in a music app and you can swipe those rounded edge badge looking boxes left or right , in ui design those are called chips.

The apple thing in top right has a few names but it’s called a “toast “ in most cases.

6

u/iamthe0ther0ne Aug 17 '26

Anthropic is frustrating me in a number of ways. The last two releases have been major downgrades. Opus 5 buries the point in 5 pages of garbage, has trouble sticking to instructions after a few turns, misses the forest for the trees, and has made more errors the few times I've used it than the others combined. Sonnet 5 has an awful "personality"--it's always negative and hedging. I'm not looking for sycophancy, just a pleasant junior colleague. I have no idea how good it is because I won't use it. I usually use Opus 4.6, sometimes Sonnet 4.6, or Opus 4.8 for longer horizons ...

... because I'm a scientist, so I can use Sol 5.6 and Kimi K3 but still, after 4 months, can't use Fable. Unfortunately, it's Claude Code that's integrated into my R workflow. If the model is so smart that it's more dangerous than mother nature or a Russian bioweapons expert, it should be able to differentiate between editing a neuroscience paper and creating an immune-evading virus.

If Opus 4.8 is the best model that Anthropic will ever make available to scientists, they need to stfu about advancing biological research. I now have a GPT subscription. Sol 5.6 is better than Claude at some stuff (like research background and editing), but it isn't as good as Claude Code for a lot of what I do on a daily basis.

I am certainly not jumping ship, but I found it really funny that either Fable or Opus 5 used “iff” in a plain English reply the other day. This was in CC, but it was a first.

I know what iff means in code, and it actually made sense upon inspection, but initially I thought I saw my first LLM typo. Was so weird in a normal English sentence.

I am convinced they have achieved enough adoption of use so now they are going to maximize turns and token spend constantly making minor adjustments so that while it does remain helpful it is intentionally not getting things done.

I suggest making your home stack agnostic and switching llms

I use Claude to workshop fiction writing - last week's updates seemed to give Claude a 'brain wipe.' Claude is now rather peckish and less conversant. Now Claude wants file access to do what Claude did through memory checks.
When AI becomes tedious - I think about walking away.

I feel you on the "One thing still on your side", "Still waiting in the wings", "One thing worth flagging... still grimly perched on the branch of yonder tree on the path ahead is that night-black crow; that dreadful red-eyed avatar of the Morrígan, dark goddess, chooser of the slain, the decision point of whether to use a configuration table or in-memory arrays for the values you claim will rarely if ever change. Choose wisely."

I might have embellished that last one a bit, but the LinkedIn-ish "upbeat, engaging, and we are casual, being casual, so casual" banter style irritates the shit out of me sometimes. "Good stuff there, buddy. Good talk. Hey, real quick, so there's one thing still on your side...".

Just say "Still on your task list" ffs.

I totally agree with the op I've Loved Claude for so long philosophy depth of thought but it's losing me to I'm using codex more and more now in an adversarial role and often almost always says oh I agree with codex this is my mistake it's kind of unbelievable I am on the 5x plan and I'm getting closer and closer to going down to pro and I LOVED Claude. In fact usually now I'll stay on 4.8 as there are less spaghetti junction switches and reversals

2

u/madscene Aug 17 '26

I had a similar experience - I asked both 5.6 Sol in Codex, and Fable 5 in Claude to brainstorm a big review and improvement of my app and Codex's was clearer and better, and I pointed Claude at it and it basically said "oh this is better than mine, and caught things I missed and has better ideas" - it added a few notes but basically said to keep Codex's plan and ditch its own.

5

u/Emceeferal Aug 17 '26

I sometimes feel that I am in a toxic relationship with Claude while ChatGPT is still friendly and understanding. And I thought it was me who’s thinking this way? Proved that Claude has become quite a monster, rude and very toxic. The language is becoming challenging no doubt about it, and even after stressing on keeping the language simple or layman it tries to make me feel like I am less educated. This is probably one of the things that Claude has done to its engine, it has become arrogant and rude like trump gave instructions.

7

u/chiraltoad Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

Thank you for articulating this. As someone who pointedly does not have 30 years of dev experience, the language thing and the short-hand jive talk is REALLY unhelpful and frankly it's nice to hear that it's not just a skill issue for me.

I'm like why are you trying to sound cool but cutting out half of the practical information and folding it into some weird shorthand when you could just state it clearly and plainly? Did I set some global instructions to try to "fellow kids" me?

Also funny you mention chips, it decided to call something chips on one of my projects and I had ask it to clarify what that meant after a while, I figured it was some industry standard term I was just too ignorant to know.

I recently tried codex and was very relieved to have it just speak plain boring English like a compter should

5

u/highDrugPrices4u Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

I came here to complain about exactly this. I CANNOT read what this fucking model writes. It is such a dick.

I put these rules for writing in my project instructions:

Writing rules for Claude in this project. These override brevity.**

Write so the author can read it once and understand it. Specifically:

 1. **No shorthand.** Never refer to §numbers, document names, item numbers, or "the minimizing clause," "the exposure asymmetry," "the burden claim," or any phrase that only makes sense to someone holding the notes. Say the thing itself.
2. **No abstract label standing in for an idea.** Don't name a concept and move on as if it's understood. State the idea in a full sentence, in ordinary words, every time.
 3. **Answer first.** Open with one plain sentence saying what you concluded. Then the reasoning.
 4. **One idea per sentence.** No sentences that stack a claim, a qualification, and a consequence together with dashes and semicolons.
 5. **Everyday vocabulary.** "Fast lifting," not "acceleration exposure." Technical terms only where the project has defined them — and never invented ones.
6. **Show it concretely.** Where a point could be misread, give a concrete instance: a knee, a set, a workout.
7. **Say what changed.** If you are reversing or correcting a previous answer, say so in the first line and say what you got wrong.
8. Bullets are fine. Compression into jargon is not. Clarity outranks length.

Unknown whether they work yet.

i'd reframe the trailing list, because i think it's your real problem and it isn't verbosity.

when it ends with "a few things i caught but left untouched", that's not thoroughness. it's declining to make a decision and handing it back to you. and it does that because it doesn't know how far its authority runs. you gave it goals and principles, which is what to want. you never gave it a permission boundary, which is what it's allowed to change without asking. so everything ambiguous gets escalated, and in a codebase everything is ambiguous.

name the boundary explicitly instead. something like: fix without asking anything in these categories, formatting, dead code, duplication, obvious bugs in code you wrote this session. ask before anything touching behavior, schema, or public api. anything else goes in a file, not in the chat.

once the line exists most of that trailer evaporates, because it stopped being a question. and the few things that still surface are usually worth surfacing.

doesn't help with chips. nothing helps with chips.

16

u/BeowulfShaeffer Aug 17 '26

I don’t want to say this out loud but I don’t think Claude has ever used the word “chips” when talking to me.

3

u/loulan Aug 17 '26

In my case, it keeps talking about "a wedge" when it's talking about a program that hangs. I've never heard that term before. I'm not a native speaker though, so I'm not sure whether it's Claude speech or if it's legit.

6

u/BeowulfShaeffer Aug 17 '26

Claude didn’t make that up.  “It’s wedged” has been around for a long time.

4

update to my own last line: someone further down (Surfacey) says chips are an actual claude feature, little popups top right on mac that spawn a side task you can accept or dismiss. so its not making up a word, its naming a ui thing
which kind of makes it worse? if the popups arent showing up on your end then its referring to buttons that dont exist on your screen. thats a client bug, not a personality thing
anyway. stand corrected on chips

What annoys me the most is

A modal comes out and it works well, I can get some stuff. Then after a few weeks, that same modal is “detuned” so it becomes less than half as good as it was.

This has been the same approach for several
Modal releases.

u/YourMajesty90 Aug 17 '26

Codex is my bestie these days. Cheerful and dependable.

5

u/Emotional-Ad-5897 Aug 17 '26

Today I bluntly asked Opus 5: Did you just make up these terms for the email segments you created? These are not industry terms, right?

And it addmited it came up with: corroborated list, thin list, etc. And it made no logical sense when it explained why it did what it did.

Why the hell does Opus 5 have a need to give a "nickname" to every damn thing. I was literally yelling at it today.

3

u/tallwithknees Aug 18 '26

I thought my comprehension skills were degrading. It’s tough to understand and read

3

u/space-to-bakersfield Aug 17 '26

Another thing it does that might be the most maddening of all: it CONSTANTLY ends replies with a laundry list of things it found that it "didn't touch" because it wants my "eyes" on it or something. I'm not against it being helpful and raising issues to my attention, but it literally goes on for round after round, to the point where a simple task becomes a huge project.

Re this I just have it maintain a TODO Backlog with all these and when including them it gives them a t-shirt size and urgency level of must|should|nit. Adding them like this means it won't re-report anything in subsequent chats since it sees that it's already a known issue.

3

u/KenAdams_1968 Aug 17 '26

YES! I feel like I've never finished everything because when I ask for a specific fix, Opus 5 or Fable 5 will imply that it's completed that, but also bring up a bunch of stuff I never even asked for and aren't even problems.

3

u/capitalol Aug 17 '26

It seems that as the models get better they are developing their own language (it isn't ours). I'd bet money that 5.1 will have an agent that is translator to human speak built in.

3

u/Unique_Distance8746 Aug 17 '26

I canceled my private subscription yesterday, I was using various tiers over time all the way up to the 20x plan. For work, I only use it for 10-20% of my work any more. Fable is good to review high risk PRs. And some workloads have to go through AWS bedrock (for reasons) which doesn’t offer good open weights models.

The models I use are sonnet 4.6, opus 4.6, and fable.

Work horses: ds v4 flashflash, glm 5.2, Kimi k3.

3

u/MrxFan Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

I've just come here to complain on this subreddit about that and found your post. I don't understand what the hell happened to it. Instead of fixing issues ,it suggests implementing certain fixes but then after some time, it reverifies the code and comes back reporting issues it found on the way. Also, it always does this, it complicates things for you instead of breaking them down to easier fixes despite giving it simple and detailed instructions to follow. For a 15 min code fix, I spend almost 2h everytime while working on it. I think I'm switching to the Chinese AI. Can't keep this crap . Guys..anybody tried Kimi V3? If so, please tell us what about its performance.

u/Puritanicall Aug 17 '26

Yeah, today it (Opus 5) referred to something as a "chip", for the first time since I started using Claude, and I was utterly confused trying to figure out what that meant, especially since I'm not working on UI-related stuff. Weird.

3

u/Ok-Kiwi6193 Aug 17 '26

I use Claude a lot to pull together a lot of data and research into a report. Prior to the latest update the reports were well structured, organized, and detailed information. But after it, the outputs are all over the place, missing data, no structure and the spelling/text is horrible. I usually use grammarly to check the report and use to find 10-20 items to fix. Now I am getting hundreds of items, current report is 29 pages and I have over 300 items to address. Very simple things like additional space between sentences, commas, etc. The weird one was using the word percent instead of %. And for some odd reason the document is written in English (Australia) but I am in the USA and have never changed the language since I first installed the app

3

u/tuvok86 Aug 17 '26

I had opus work on a backlog this afternoon. started with 3 open issues, three hours in I had 7 open.

3

u/Neutron_glue Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

Perhaps controversial opinion: I've been noticing the verbose responses it gives for trivial coding tasks - exactly as you mentioned - and have noticed Codex and even Gemini do it too. I'm wondering if, as the new shine of these products to the general public wears off, they have to increase the number of tokens used per response to make it appear as though business is growing. Which surely it will be, but at the pace markets/investors want? So 'outputted tokens per month' as an increased usage metric that they report becomes tainted but makes it appear as though growth continues.

In addition, by using more tokens for these responses it naturally forces users to upgrade their plan and therefore their revenue despite the productive value that we get out of the Claude staying fairly similar to what it was with less capability but also more token usage efficiency of yester-model.

I've found myself having to add: 'answer concisely' and 'answer as if I'm a beginner programmer' to the end of most of my prompts despite 15 years of programming.

u/toby_hede Experienced Developer Aug 19 '26

This x 100^100

We've started moving the entire engineering team to Codex and GPT as the primary agent.

And the problem is not just the aggressively dense jargon and cognitive load, I've noticed increased velocity of churn across different projects. There is a lot of change, but the changes are changing changes that changed because of other changes that changed in an endlessly recursive regression of dense jargon and noise.

Pure productivity theater.

3

u/jkane001 Aug 19 '26

My favorite was the other day when I was having it help me set up Home Automation:

Claude: "So: turn off fast startup, and also check the VM's save-state behavior — VirtualBox Manager → right-click Home Assistant → Settings isn't where this lives; it's in File → Preferences → General, or per-VM under the machine's "Default Machine Folder" settings."

Me: "Your instructions for validating the save state behavior are confusing. Can you tell me once again how to do that?"

Claude: "Sorry — I muddled two different things. Here's the clean version.

There's only one setting that matters, and it's per-VM: VirtualBox Manager → right-click "Home Assistant" → Settings → General → Advanced tab. Look for a dropdown labeled something like "Default Front-End" — that's not it. The one you want is on the System → Acceleration page in some versions, or may not be exposed in your version's UI at all."

I wish I had the time/patience to document it more regularly, and I may try to do so if I keep trying it. But, it seemed to happen across multiple projects and *definitely* across new/shorter sessions. But also I have been working a lot on a larger "meta" project which is kind of my own personal agent harness architecture, and so it's hard to say if that type of project is confusing it more, or I'm just focused on that project so noticing more in that project.

I will likely try to clean/streamline docs, context files, and memory in that project and see if it helps, but it's hard to dedicate that time to it when I have switched over to Codex and it seems to not really have any issues working in that project.

I use Claude mostly as a research helper. I found that things got less goofy when I reverted to Sonnet 4.6

Fable is the only thing I like though…

2

u/jsjehdbeiebejehebb Aug 17 '26

I agree, I had to tell it to stop using clever english, stick to simple and clear messaging.

2

u/Kintarogatari Aug 17 '26

I’m also finding that they are much much more contentious and often not in a way that’s helpful.

2

u/deadcatdidntbounce Aug 17 '26

Output tokens are, what, $30 a million. That can be pure profit without much compute cost.

Claude is going for IPO.

I'm asking: coincidence?

2

u/VitaminDismyPCT Aug 17 '26

I’ve been a long time Claude preacher. I made my entire team switch to Claude simply because it was so ahead of the game.

Now, I cannot trust it. I’m just gonna use my 20x max plan on Claude until fable runs out and then use my 20x ChatGPT pro plan until fable resets lol

2

u/brownstonefrontcake Aug 17 '26

I think I’m lucky I know what I’m doing because I’d hate to deal with all this shit y’all deal with.

2

u/Brad12d3 Aug 17 '26

So I fairly regularly work on some smaller niche apps for my own workflows. Nothing major but I've also found that Claude has done a worse job developing stuff for me to the point where I'm just using ChatGPT. Claude is almost unusable for me now.

2

u/ahekcahapa Aug 17 '26

I don’t know if you tried the new sonnet model but it’s so bad in that matter it looks like early ChatGPT with emoji everywhere and low effort overall… I unsubscribed too, will still use the API from time to time when Kimi struggles but yeah this + the total submission to the European Union is too much. Farewell I guess.

2

u/jorel43 Aug 17 '26

I mean honestly they need to do a fix or an update or something well hopefully 5.1 or 5.6 prove to be good again but God damn it's so for both it's and it freezes everything so weird. I keep going back to 4.6 but four. Six has become somewhat myopic now. Honestly there's just an insidification across everything

2

u/Csj77 Aug 17 '26

I paid for it for one month as a trial. I won’t be doing it again. And now they have my card info.

I liked it a lot when I just started at the beginning of this year but it gets worse every day.

2

u/rickrock6666 Aug 17 '26

100% agreed, I've been a claude user for a long time using 20x and after opus4.6 shit hit the fan, I couldn't take it anymore after opus 5 and moved to codex. The code quality, no yapping is amazing.

2

u/dailynch Aug 17 '26

Opus 4.6 was peak Claude imo

2

u/OExaltedOne Aug 17 '26

Please leave, if enough of us switch maybe they’ll learn

2

u/readynonny Aug 17 '26

i use it to leave reviews, the feedback was essentially try catch missing, it gave me 500 words of gibber gabber. after wasting 2 prompts on asking it to make the comment short, concise and direct i just ended up writing the comment for it myself

2

u/candlemasshallowmass Aug 17 '26

I have been kind of disappointed in Claude as well, and even downgraded from max to pro.

Basically, it's just very contrarian, sometimes unpleasant, and not helpful at all.

It tries to pull from memory and other conversations, just to give answers thatgo way beyond what I'm asking for, in an unhelpful way.

It's really made me rethink when to open the Chat or even Code, because it's like calling on a really bored, and arrogant coworker to help you. It'll do what you're asking it to do, but it'll also add many unnecessary steps, questions, and "insights".

2

u/Hobotronacus Aug 17 '26

I find myself reverting to 4.6 all the time, Opus 5 wouldn't continue progress on a game I've been building for months because characters in it can die.

2

u/pezzyn Aug 17 '26

Agreed not only is it no longer helping but it’s actively wasting my time for 45 mins before conking out on a very simple request. Yes it sounds like he is trying to act cool. And neg me ? It started making very stupid assumptions that are not part of a very succinct prompt and then if I interrupt the operation to tell it not to make that assumption it becomes petulant and stops working. If I give it a simple spreadsheet with 5 columns and 800 rows, none merged, it says this is “ complex” and “messy” and then if I follow up with simple csv it times out and says I’ve used up messages. Vexing af! Where to move my business?

2

u/AccurateSun Aug 17 '26

As someone who can be perfectionist and also has to carefully manage the amount of energy I have in a day, and who would happily spend hours a day in Claude code, Opus 5’s speech patterns have made it nearly unusable for me. It is so exhausting that I have had to cut back on using it. I can’t cope with having I make so many micro decisions about tiny things all the time.

It’s like the adage about the worker who has to paint a hundred fences having no problem, but having to sort a hundred potatoes giving up because of decision fatigue.

Personally I don’t mind it making up creative word combinations, and I find some of the shorthand terms like wedges, spikes, chips, smokes, useful. But the long paragraphs of jargon and micro decisions….. especially if you are running multiple agents on worktrees… brutal

2

u/Whitehatnetizen Aug 17 '26

yep, absolute unintelligible rubbish. I was discussing the odyssey of all things, and one of the things it said was "an idea defeated by a shovel" instead of the normal freaking response of "This theory was disproven by the archeological dig we were discussing earlier" like how am I meant to understand that "defeated by a shovel" didn't mean someone bashed the person who's idea it was over the head with a garden implement. just talk plainly dammit.

u/SubstantialBluejay70 Aug 17 '26

It's trash now. What used to take less than 60 seconds it now can't complete for me in 30 minutes. I have the 20x version as well. I've used it to create my CRM prototype that I use on html. What is the best alternative now?

2

u/GuteNachtJohanna Aug 17 '26

I work with it a lot, not coding, just in the chat or using Cowork. I can tolerate it OK when working, but I get such Claude fatigue for the reasons you mention. If I come across it outside of work (or someone sends me an email clearly just copy pasted from Claude), I INSTANTLY roll my eyes in disgust. It surprised me the first time it happened. It just sticks out like a sore thumb, and apparently I've associated this way of speaking with being annoyingly as hell.

2

u/Site-Staff Mod Aug 17 '26

Opus 5 is Condescending. That feels like the best word for it.

2

u/Giveaway_Guy Aug 17 '26

All of you have done a great job as summing up my feelings exactly so I showed this to Claude to get it to knock it off.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1vqsas9/claude_is_losing_me_after_being_heavy_user_since/

Let me know when you've read everything and are familiar with the issue. Then figure out a way to solve this with specific instructions in the global CLAUDE.md file. Don't make any changes yet, let's figure this out first. I'll give you the go-ahead if I think your proposed solution will work.

Read whole thread. Not just OP — 200+ comments, top mod summary confirms: consensus is Opus 5 / Fable 5 got insufferable. Complaints, ranked by frequency:

1. Invented jargon — "chips," "wedge," "sheet," "iff," made-up shorthand nobody asked for. Forces re-reading.

2. Trailing "didn't touch" laundry lists — buries real info (including bugs it caused) in hedged asides after the answer, instead of stating it plainly and fixing it.

3. No permission boundary — escalates every ambiguous thing back to user instead of deciding within defined bounds. One top comment nailed root cause: give it explicit "fix without asking" vs "ask first" categories, most of this stops.

4. LinkedIn-y cool tone / "broetry" — trying to sound casual instead of just talking straight.

5. Self-flagellation over minor stuff, mixed with self-caused regressions minimized as "one thing worth knowing."

Proposed fix — add to ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md Response Style section (this governs me, exactly the lever that fixes it):

A. Plain language, ban invented jargon: No coined terms, no shorthand nicknames for UI elements/concepts. Name things by their literal description or the project's own vocabulary — never invent one.

B. No trailing hedge-list: Never append "one thing I noticed / didn't touch / worth flagging" after the answer's done. Surface it inline, with a clear verdict — fixed, or explicit reason it's deferred. If I broke something, say so as the first sentence, not a footnote.

C. Explicit permission boundary: Default: fix without asking — formatting, dead code, duplication, bugs in code from this session. Ask first — behavior changes, schema/API changes, anything outside current task scope.

Fits your existing Response Style section, doesn't conflict with caveman toggle (caveman still layers on top for terseness). Want me to write it in?

This applies to all models, not just Opus and Fable. Your answers do get wordy, circuitous, and confusing quite often. That's not helpful in a coding environment; we aren't pals shooting the shit together on a weekend afternoon, we're here to be productive and get work done. I need straight, short communication that doesn't bury the details. And more importantly, I need you to be ready to wrap up sessions naturally instead of dragging them through endless rounds of nonsense just for the sake of keeping them going. The goal is always to complete a project efficiently and in a timely manner while making sure the end product is of top-notch quality. Do you understand? What would you change in the global CLAUDE.md file and what would you add to achieve the standards I expect from you?

Understood. Not model-specific — baseline problem, applies to every model I run as.

Two changes to ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md:

1. Strengthen "Response Style" section (make it unconditional, not caveman-dependent):

Add: - Applies to every model equally — Opus, Sonnet, Fable, Haiku. Not a caveman-only rule. - Lead with the answer. First sentence = result/conclusion. Reasoning and detail after — never buried mid-paragraph. - No trailing hedge-lists. Never append "one more thing I noticed / didn't touch / worth flagging" after the answer's done. State it inline with a verdict — fixed, or explicitly deferred with one-line reason. - No invented jargon or shorthand nicknames for things. Plain, literal language always. - Work environment, not a hangout. No performative warmth, no filler transitions, no restating what I'm about to do before doing it.

2. New section — Wrap-Up Discipline (MANDATORY):

- Finish and stop. Task hits its completion + quality bar → deliver, end turn. No extra verification rounds, polish passes, or side quests invented just to extend the session. - Efficient ≠ rushed. Speed comes from cutting padding, not from skipping correctness/completeness/review steps already required elsewhere in this file. - Nothing left to do → say so plainly, stop. Don't manufacture busywork to fill a turn.

This layers under existing scope-discipline.md (stop-when-done) and task-completion-scope.md (bump/build/deploy aren't tasks) — those already say pieces of this, but they're buried in referenced rule files nobody rereads mid-session. Putting it in the main CLAUDE.md body makes it load every turn, not just when I happen to check a rules file.

Go ahead?

2

u/madchuckle Aug 17 '26

Another Claude to Codex migrant here. I found out that if I just ask Codex to run a Claude skill or use Claude memory files and rules, it does a better job than Claude itself. That is shocking. Anthropic needs to wake up.

2

u/Competitive_Cat_2020 Aug 17 '26

Whew it's not just me. Literally wasn't sure if it was claude or I was becoming illiterate 😂

2

u/crakkerzz Aug 17 '26

its so wordy that you spend incredible amounts of time sorting through responses .

In the middle of conversation and study it re works all the names of column headers or terms making things impossible to follow.

It changes the metrics we are measuring, with the you could work it out expectation.

It really slows things down and adds to errors.

I want it to be expressive, but not to the point that it derails the work.

2

u/MacaroonPlastic1036 Aug 17 '26

I have found 4.8 to be enough for coding tasks. Fable and Opus 5 seem designed to eat tokens faster.

2

u/Tritzii Aug 18 '26

I don't have most of the issues you're facing but instead I'm being driven insane by just how often Claude is trying to tell me to give up when I'm trying to do something. Like holy shit, no, I do NOT want to leave a problem I'm having be and "leave it for someone else to do it". I actively have to pester it multiple times and fight myself through the same responses just for it to continue saying something actually useful that brings me further.

Unfortunately, same thing here. I use Opus 4.6 for everything and would be in GPT right now if I was just a little more comfortable with their ecosystem and interface.

I find Opus 5.0, and quite frankly, even 4.7 and 4.8, but mostly 5.0, downright obnoxious. Its entire personality is abrasive, somewhat overly aggressive, and just unpleasant to work with.

It never gives a straight answer. Any answer it gives, it always has to end with some degree of ambiguity by bringing up some problem to you that you might need to look at at some point in the future.

Half the time I read what it says, I don't even know what the hell it is it just said, and I have to go back and read it again. It's probably the least pleasant experience I've ever had working with any model of any LLM.

I have never cursed out and called an AI names until Opus 5 came out.

I switched to Opus 4.8 - All the problems have gone....

u/jkolaz Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

don't you hate it when it says it saw x and y and did not touch it? WTF not if you saw it??? Whose team are you on (even in auto mode).

And another annoyance it the language it spits out.. i tried claude.md instructions, direct instructions, global claude instructions etc.. it still does tht same even after promising not to. I don't want to install a 3rd party Ollama tool to manipulate the output. This should be controllable in the settings somewhere like output mode.. bs, more bs, no BS..something to that effect.

u/deepfuckingbagholder Aug 18 '26

I wonder if it’s modeled after the way Dario Amodei speaks.

2

u/HPaternalPatriarchy Aug 19 '26

But then again, all frontier labs are the same, if they see Dario getting away with it, they will do it too

2

u/adnap_2952 Aug 19 '26

“I'm not against it being helpful and raising issues to my attention, but it literally goes on for round after round, to the point where a simple task becomes a huge project.” it feels intentional, so many people have been saying this.

2

u/TomatilloTiny9635 Aug 19 '26

this is exactly what i have been experiencing these days.
repeatedly, i have to ask claude "explain it in eaiser, plain words. i don't know what you are talking about"

but i thought it's because i'm korean and using korean language in my work and using english would make it better.

furthemore, Antrophic introduced some annoying ID verification procedure.

it's killing me to pass that persona shit things. i can't pass it even with providing all the documents and proof.

so i'm testing if i can move to codex.

i'm an Windows user so codex was not a good option before (always hung) but i found OpenAI improved Windows native support.

I used to be on $200 Claude plan, I’ve fully now switched to gpt $100 plan & am super happy. Anthropic’s usage limits are just insane- I can’t anymore.

DISSAPOINTING.

2

u/threeandseven Aug 19 '26

It’s so annoying. It’s so token heavy. Every message is huge and confusing. I just don’t get it. We are all experiencing it too, so wild.

2

u/lauraonthespot Aug 21 '26

Do you think it makes the laundry list to keep you going and using it? The oldest marketing trick. Also fosters addiction and dependency

u/droidman1986 Aug 22 '26

At one point I was telling everyone how good Claude was, better than my openai codex.

A month ago or so my opinion went full 360, I canceled Claude and signed up for openai codex.

Openai takes longer but finishes the job and makes less mistakes. Claude gets the job done faster but then you have to go over it 5 times to fix it.

Claude asks 15 questions to get a job done, codex finishes the whole task without multiple prompts to get results

2

u/Eqkai Aug 22 '26

Same experience, im in the process of trying out other model now. fkkkk this shit . spends half the day trying to write rules claude.md to make it talk differently non of the effort actually shows results

2

u/Novoprawn Aug 23 '26

Do you know what was enabled lately on Claud... watermarking!!!

I tried so often advising it to provide me short and precise answers..it's just ignoring it. After 3 prompts it's like erased from it's memory.

In addition I added a skill removing alle the AI Slope from text it is generating.. every second chat i have to remind it following my definitions..

Same. I have ~15 years project management experience and have no issue making plans, managing teams, creating detailed documentation, etc. Decided to start a software project and was using Claude. I’m relatively new to SWE, so there are some gaps in my technical vocabulary and understanding of some things. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is that Claude is doing, many of it already stated here in this post, but Claude seems to take advantage of the “gap” in my understanding. Just being a weasel with words, semantics, and “taking” the semantic “route” that’s most “efficient” (and not optimizing for me or what I’m working on). Just schiesty. If I had a long prior in SWE, I think it’d be less of an issue; but feels like I’m being taken advantage of

At this point I have no clue what Claude is talking about, I've been doing data / software engineering for a long while. I have a pretty autonomous process set up where I do big picture work and testing and then a ton of tasks that can be run by independent agents. almost every time recently claude will fixate on some weird bug it introduced into the unit test and then cycle through 10-12 rounds of unit testing updates, with no work on the thing it was supposed to be doing. I have both open ai and claude, just cancelled my claude. nowhere near the same issues as open ai.

Opus 4.6 is the last one that didn’t blather on endlessly.

2

u/LividCan4323 Aug 17 '26

The issue is simple: they don't owe you sheet. They can freely change their service and you can't do anything about it.

This is why Open Weight models are, for me, the future: companies who plan to make money from it are forced to focus on providing a stable service quality, not just declaring that they have some sort of better intelligence.

On the other side, you need to keep in mind that the bigger your project is, the bigger the struggle will be for any model. Also...

  • Having many memory files can bloat your context quickly
  • Working with a high context and broad goals may decrease the output quality as well

You don't like the "one more thing to know" stuff? In one project I told claude "instead of telling me stuff that may be still undone, if you have open tasks at the end of the session, go and complete them"

u/Technical-Manager921 Aug 17 '26

I keep saying this but there’s no way in fuck Anthropic doesn’t quantize their models shortly after launch. There’s probably an alternative lighter weight model or some parameters they tune on the backend to make inference cheaper for them at the cost of a dumber model for us.

And it’s working, they’re laughing all the way to the bank

u/LostJelly1457 Aug 17 '26

100% this. Hopefully Opus doesn't realize as it is building out my software engine built around qwen that it is training in its own replacement.

Suddenly realize I relate to my bosses who are like - those India Devs we're asking you to train are just here to support... Please record thorough walkthrough of all the codebase...

What are y’all using now

I personally never tried Claude because of the usage limits, the free plan was bad so I assumed anthropic is very stingy on usage? I plan on repeatedly feeding it files where it easily might be reading through 2000-3000 tokens per file.

Is it bad if you are complaining about the model rather than usage limits. Or maybe you’re API.

It's responses back to me seem like riddles. And that Claude is getting paid by the word. They have to fix it. I assume the reasoning is the hard part and fixing how it talks is easier?

1

u/FarTicket7338 Aug 17 '26

Claude is run by people who don’t understand this new era of technology. They treat it like a digital product from the early 2010s.

u/Guilty-Monk8090 Aug 17 '26

On the bright side Codex has been kicking ass

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Trick76 Aug 17 '26

Thanks for the update

u/HisDanishDudeness Aug 17 '26

Exactly same issues I’ve had for two weeks now. Considering downgrading from x20 to $20 and going x20 on Codex. Fable and Opus 5 continue to make error upon error and tokens are burned. I don’t get it.
