SubReddit Announcement: A New Rule and Deputy Moderators

Hello everyone,

I know, you folks barely hear from us moderators. Truth is, we're both super busy and really only show up when called upon. I recently stumbled upon a post here bemoaning an up-tick of low-effort posts where people expect an unrealistic amount of hand-holding without much apparent thought of their own on the level of ask they are making. Therefore, a few changes around here to help keep this place tidy:

  • A new rule! No low-effort posts:

Cosplayers are passionate craftspeople. The skills and knowledge that you come here seeking comes from effort born of that passion. If you would like help with your costume, all that we ask is that you show a bit of that effort yourself. Posts must show some time and thought from you on the project you are requesting help with, and some basic understanding of the scope it would entail. Not just a blanket "I want this, HELP PLEASE!"

  • New Deputy Moderators: I'd say I'm introducing you to these people, but you see from them more than you've ever seen from me. I've reached out to some of our most vocal commenters and granted them the power to moderate posts and comments. Rather than having to report rule-breaking posts, which they have been very good at, they now have the power to directly clean them up themselves. I'll still pop in if somebody needs to be banned or larger changes need to be made, but I've seen consistent great advice from these people, and I trust them to maintain the quality of discussion here on r/CosplayHelp. Everyone say thank you to:

Cosplay 101 answers to a lot of basics

First and foremost. Your health and safety is more important than 100% accuracy. If making or wearing the item will be dangerous or painful don’t do it.

Second, I’d add this info to the FAQ but it appears I don’t have enough karma to update it personally! If the info is in the FAQ I did not duplicate it here! (The FAQ is on the sidebar! It wasn’t visible before for some reason but it’s up now!)

This is not a comprehensive list, but I hope to be able to update it when I come across new or important information! I do hope if you’re looking for something not featured here, it will at least give you a base knowledge set on how to be able to search for what you’re looking for.

------------------GENERAL TIPS-----------------------------

(Where to find certain things, very basic crafting info)

EDIT TO REMOVE INFO ABOUT COSPLANNER APP, it doesn't appear to exist anymore!

-To find patterns, or specific props. These are host websites for artists or creators where they can sell things like Etsy, or Redbubble. Etsy is a fantastic place to look for patterns to make props or cosplay pieces, sometimes you can even find people open for commissions! Artists on instagram will almost always have links to their shops to buy things, so explore there too.

-To find cheaper clothing pieces, props, or things to be altered try thrift stores. So Goodwill or other small local resale shops. This will likely take more than one trip so don’t give up if you don’t get it in one go. Ebay is also a good place to check believe it or not, there’s just a slight learning curve to searching things to find what you want.

-Dance and Athletic apparel websites will have things like leotards, bodysuits, specialized undergarments etc. They’re going to be a little pricier but they’ll be good quality, durable, and 9 times out of 10 machine washable!

-Hardware stores, paintball and airsoft companies, military/paramilitary surplus, and second hand sports equipment stores may also be good places to check for bits and pieces. Paintball/airsoft will also have a variety of masks and helmets that can be painted and altered.

-VERY IMPORTANT FOR PROP WEAPONS: Always look into your local guidelines and convention rules to see what kinds of prop weapons are allowed! Some cons have strict policies on what can and cannot be brought in!

-Michael’s, Joann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby etc. and any local craft stores will have tons and tons of craft supplies. If you want to save money and keep up to date on sales check to see if you can join an email list. I know Joann’s has coupons in them all the time!

-You can buy a variety of brands of fabric paint from almost anywhere that sells craft supplies. This makes it easy to get designs or patterns on most fabrics. For changing the color of an entire garment I’d recommend dying it.

-Some fabrics can be dyed different colors very easily, some cannot. A good way to tell is if the fabric is natural (cotton, linen etc.) it is generally easier to dye. The more synthetic (fake) a fabric is the longer and slightly more complicated it will be. Tulip is an excellent dye brand and they offer both regular and synthetic dyes with nice simple instructions right on the packages!

-You can make stencils out of craft foam or thicker paper to make it easier to copy logos or symbols on whatever you’re making!

-Wig and contact websites are listed in the FAQ but there are companies like dental distortions that make tooth veneers that can take a cosplay to the next level!

-Hollywood makeup, FX, and costume professionals almost always have social media accounts they can be extremely helpful when it comes to reference images! For example the costumer who designed the Moon Knight suits has tons of detail and behind the scenes images on her instagram!

-Complicated cosplays can be simplified by boiling down the costume to its essentials the best way I’ve learned to do this is through toys or fan art. What things are essential to recognizing the character and what things could be left off! You don’t have to be 100% to be recognizable!

-If big all out cosplays aren’t your thing you can always try “bounding.” You’ll hear “Disneybounding” most often but you can do it with other things too of course! Disney doesn’t allow adults to dress as characters in their parks, but fans got creative. “Bounding” is more about matching colors, getting similar accessories, or finding just the right combination of things to make you think of the character. It’s hard to explain verbally but easy to understand once you look into it!

-Say you have an OC, and you want to cosplay your OC. That’s fine! Have at it! You’ve got no professional media to tie you down! All these tips can still help you find or make your cosplay!

-I do have a friendly reminder though, please remember you cannot expect people to know who your character is. And it’s not fair to get mad at them if they make a guess and the guess is wrong. A simple “Nope its an OC!” is plenty for most people! I’ve complimented plenty of cosplayers and asked about their cosplay only to find out it was an OC!

“Crossplay” safety

-DO NOT BIN D YOUR CHEST WITH ACE BANDAGES IT’S UNSAFE. Compression tops or more heavy duty sports bras are much safer. If the character has an open shirt you can use wig tape/skin tape to hold the material of the shirt to your skin. If you do not have breasts but are looking to add some to a cosplay you can always pad a bra. You’ll want to measure your chest around your pectorals, that will be the band size, the letter size will be the cup. So a 34A means your chest is 34 inches around and A would be the cup size you would be looking to fill. (I have more on taking measurements later.) Companies now sell latex chests with or without breasts for people looking to be the most accurate they can.

-You can always just “genderbend” the thing and cosplay them as the same gender you are. It’s okay. People do it all the time and it’s very widely accepted. There’s also a third, more neutral option, don’t obviously genderbend the thing? You don’t have to call attention to the fact that you’re not the same gender as the character you’re cosplaying.

-An example of what I’m trying to explain: I generally read as female, but have cosplayed Johnny Cage one of the male characters from Mortal Kombat. His base look is shirtless, with his own first name tattooed across his chest. The only change I made was putting “Johnny” on a crop top. I didn’t “feminize” the rest of the outfit or go out of my way to be read as male. There is a “middle option” when it comes to presentation and cosplay. At the end of the day everybody knows it’s just a costume.

-This tip might seem dumb, but you’re going to have to trust me here. This mainly applies to people looking to make large costume pieces or props by hand. People who are already kind of intermediate with their skills. If you’re stuck on something go see how furries would make it. Not kidding. I’ve made all kinds of non-furry things with tutorials put on the internet by a furry. The vast majority of them are fun, friendly people and the community as a whole is WILDLY talented and creative. You only ever really hear about the bad apples.

A big question I see here is “what is that piece of clothing?” That’s a good question! Here are some links to historical fashion databases! They’re all arranged a little differently BUT this is a place to start looking for what specific pieces of clothing or styles are called!

Here’s another important pro tip.

It’s okay.

Your cosplay doesn’t have to be perfect.

Cosplay is for fun and if it doesn’t feel fun or rewarding don’t do it. Other con goers and cosplayers aren’t going to judge you. If they do for some reason and try to make you feel bad about it, that says more about THEM and their personality than your ability. Everybody has to start somewhere. Nobody should be ashamed of learning and practicing and getting better. You can always go back and fix things or redo whole cosplays later on after your skills develop. This is a hobby and you have the right to participate in said hobby your own way.

I can add theatrical or FX makeup tips? things like scars, bruises, old age makeup, or like changing the face shape with very specific contouring?

I also have a draft of Convention tips similar to this post, would that be helpful as well?

Armor Where on earth can I get metal bars for these boots in time for Halloween?

Post image
37 Upvotes

I'm following this tumblr tutorial for the Long Fall Boots from Portal 2 (Portal 2 Longfall Boot Tutorial – @steeltowncosplays on Tumblr) and she used a "3/16" x 4" aluminum bar, 6061 alloy". Now there's two weeks to Halloween and I'm a procrastinationalist, so somehow I'm gonna make these by Halloween night. But where can I get such metal bars for a cheap price (up to $60)? Is there a different kind of metal that I can use instead that is easier to acquire?

I've looked online but all I can find are really sketchy-looking websites that don't have product photos because everything is custom ordered. That can't be my only resource, right?

btw I'm not opposed to dumpster diving or otherwise looking in scrap metal places

I got scammed and need help

I will start with this is my fault I was to kind and trusted the seller on Etsy and now here I am one week from a church event without a Batman costume. At my church I am known as the guy who dresses up for the Halloween events and I love it I do it for the kids and they all love it as well. Well after three years I told myself that this will be my last costume for a while my wife and I want to buy and house with our kids. Well as my last one I decided to spend more because it’s Batman it was suppose to be here in August and now it’s October and here I am without a costume and panicking. I don’t know what to do I am trying to think of a last minute purchase but I do not know how that will go lol. I just need to vent and open up to someone because I had plans to wear this at children hospitals at the end of the year as well. Sorry about my grammar and rant I’m just sad and mad and needed to vent.

Prop RIOT SHIELDS!

• Upvotes

Help! I need ideas on how to craft (or where to otherwise purchase) a riot shield prop. It’s not exactly a rush, but I’d super appreciate any help in finding riot shields or a way to make one myself.

They’re one of the few props I find that are never made of anything but ACTUAL metal lol. I’d like something that’s preferably not $500 haha

Prop Anyone have good techniques to attach a small (kitten-size) creature to ones shoulder?

Attending a Halloween wedding as Ryland Grace (Project Hail Mary) and have a 3D printed Rock (about 1/4 scale) I'm trying to affix to my shoulder without falling off.

I'm wearing a jumpsuit, unzipped and tied around my waist and a T-shirt.

How do I achieve a texture like on a cape/cloak using blankets, and not just using dirt/grime for the look?

Thumbnail

For some reference, this is the Rat King from Deadlock.

In regards to my current progress on the cosplay, I've been collecting a lot of different white blankets that I intend to use, dyeing them later on with a prominent red/bourbon colored for that regal look. Using two different reds for that sporadic, "i put this together from scraps" look.

However, it's the greenish/brown grime that I don't know how to replicate. I'm hoping I could get some insight on how to do something like this, without just dragging the fabric through the mud and sewers, or at the very least, hoping I still smell nice. My current plan right now is:

- Use Spray paint or dipping it in paint with a fade upwards, damaging the cloak for future use but probably could work.

- Maybe using real dirt. Probably not this one. That's gross, and I'd have to REALLY go out of my way to look for that.

Any help would be appreciated! Guides, advice, anything helps.

Wig Post con wig questions

Thumbnail

I have been wearing and styling simple wigs for cons for some time. But I never know or see discussed about how to handle a wig after the con ends. Or what is normal to expect after wearing a wig for a con.

Is it

  1. normal for a wig to be tangled and messy after a con? I wore this curly wig but now the curls are kinda messy and with a lot of fly aways. Under the wig is even worse, it’s extremly tangled. Is this normal to happen or did I style it wrong?
  2. Am I supposed to wash the wig after one use? And that way completly lose the styling?
  3. Usually, even when a wig was styled in the correct and best way, is it normal to have to style it again before the next con?

Im still debating on how to take care of this wig, since it looks so tangled and messy. I dont know if I should start over or just try and fix what I have.

Thanks in advance :)

I'm pretty nervous on buying armor patterns due to how much AI content there is now! Especially with my characters armor, I don't want to waste time or materials on a piece that won't function / uncomfortable. Any suggestions for reliable patterns?

Post image

hi guys im planning to cosplay kim kitsuragi from disco elysium but i cant find a good jacket for him. theres a kim kitsuragi cosplay jacket being sold but i dont like how it looks.
ive been searching for like just regular clothes, specifically a muted orange kinda cropped bomber jacket but nothing comes in that color and i need help😭
i tried looking on walmart and they were all like neon hazardous orange and amazon jackets tend to have a bunch of random pockets and shit on it... i really am just looking for a base plain jacket and i plan on sewing brown corduroy around the collar, the bottom of the jacket, and the sleeves

this is kind of an addendum, but im also looking for a good brown leather gun holster belt that isnt too expensive, like less than $30 if possible... if anyone has any recs

Armor How do I fill these shallow low poly gaps without sanding into more plastic

I modeled this helmet in blender working with a lower poly count. I sanded the edges to be much smoother and added some filler primer only to realize its still bumpy. Is there some way I can fill all these shallow gaps since the filler primer doesnt seem to work with more coats and so I dont have to keep sanding the plastic any further.

Prop How to stop scratch damage?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I just finished repainting a premade prop I got from a store, when I finished I noticed some spots are missing paint so I simply repainted them. It happens again and I realize it’s from the lightest of scratches, it happened before repainting it but I assumed it was bad paint used beforehand since I’m not used to cosplaying. The prop is made of plastic and the paint scratches simply from resting on something, is there a way to fix this without buying a new prop, something like coating hopefully?

I’ll be asleep after posting this, I took a long time to repaint it so I need a bit of rest, don’t take my lack of a response as rude.

Armor What materials and fabrics do you recommend for a Mercy cosplay from Overwatch?

Hi! I’m planning to put together a few Overwatch cosplays, but one that’s especially important to me is Mercy, specifically her original Overwatch 1 version. I’m currently 3D printing her staff, but I’m finding the costume itself a bit challenging, not so much the props, but the armor pieces and the fabric components. If anyone has already done this cosplay or knows what kind of fabrics and materials I could use, I’d really appreciate the help. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Prop Latching/locking system

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone, so first of all, I live in Argentina, so be patient when it comes to brands, names of stuff you tell me to buy and such, and second, this is my first ever prop!

Im making the saw cleaver from bloodborne, I did the rotating mechanism with a 3d printer and PLA (i think) and the blade out of EVA foam, everything's glued correctly and all, but i have just a slight problem, i need the little lever for the locking mechanism to actually press against it so it can lock the blade and i can flail it around without going loose, I'll attach photos of the lever and the handle, i was thinking about using a spring, but i fear it might come loose or snap, and i only founds ones that were either too weak, or too strong, so any tip, idea or hardware item you can tell me about, I'll try it out!

What material to use for tail wrapped around leg?

I am wanting to add a tail to a pretty dainty dragon costume. Rather than having it swing behind me and take up space, I was thinking I could have it wrapping around and down my leg but I am not sure what materials I can achieve this with. I am a novice and am just trying to create something cute for Halloween. Thanks in advance!

Help Finding Gloves

This is technically more a costume than a cosplay because it’s for Halloween but I’m posting it here becsuse I’m sure ya’ll will be able to help me. I’m trying to find black and white striped fingerless gloves for my FNAF marionette costume, but everything I can find is knitted and built for warmth and I know that’ll piss me off because it’ll make my hands hot. Does anyone know of any that are made of a sheer mesh material so my hands will stay cool? Only requirements are it has to arrive before Halloween and not be ridiculously expensive. Please let me know if you have any recommendation!
