Story A year later after burying my dad/boss. We’re still working hard at his shop

You may remembered him as the guy who built a giant wing for a lighting McQueen 3000GT build.

First pic is me making a 3 piece set for a Jurassic park 1st gen explorer

His team and I are still knocking projects out. I’ve learned a lot about myself, my dad’s business, and his circle of friends. I’ve been challenged, I’ve endured, and I’m very thankful to say I’ve had an incredible first year, despite how I found myself in this position.

I miss my dad more than anything, but in a small way, I’m at peace knowing he doesn’t have a long road to recovery ahead of him. The tree-cutting accident changed me drastically, and I know my dad wouldn’t have been the same coming out of it.

No more health scares, worrying about cancer, or watching the strongest man I know fade away.

A few people came into my life, and a few people left after the funeral. I see the real ones still standing.

As the seasons change, so does my work schedule. No more wild times at the shop.

I’m living the life I once dreamed of in prison.

Working all the odd hours of the night, meeting deadlines, and having fun doing it.

Plenty of times, I was warned about burning out. Little did they know I was fueled by grief and ambition, and I’m gladly still sober six years later

There were many situations where I thought I’d bitten off more than I could chew, but after I finished the projects, I saw that I had it in me.

I’m not replacing my ol’ man. I’m just following in his footsteps.
So people of r/daddit
Thank you for being a present person in your loved ones live.
You’d affect them more than anything
I watched my dad work so hard during the toughest storms in his life, and if he could do it…so can I.
we buried my dad and I found myself working a week later.
I’m so thankful for counseling

Yesterday I posted the infamous chair and this morning my amazing wife delivered our first child into the world.

Really I just wanted somewhere to say how incredibly happy and proud of my wife I am. Carrying our baby for months and delivering her in a healthy, and HEFTY state.

I cannot wait to see the girl she grows into, whilst doing my best to hang onto each and every moment with her. Looking forward to learning The Ways of The Dad.

Fellow dads, say hi to Zelda('s hand) <3

Advice Request Waking up at 6 to watch my kid refuse to play soccer.

Kiddo (5) is an enthusiastic soccer practicer. Team spirit, eager to play, goals at every practice. Come game time he’s all tears, moping, clinging, and acts like he doesn’t know his teammates. We’re on game 5 of this. Ideas? We’ve tried visualization, pump-up music, bedtime stories about it, bribes, and everything else I can think of. Feeling very defeated about it.

EDIT: Thanks all, this community is awesome.

Advice Request Marriage is coming completely undone and im lost on how to handle it

My wife (31) and I (29) have just had an incredibly difficult year. I'm not the best at typing things like this out and there is quite a bit to cover but today and last night were an absolute shit show and the first real time things ever got physical when she punched me several times in my face and even made my lip bleed.

This all started over finances and general disagreements on how to raise our family. We have 3 kids (5,3,5 months). Ill be the first to admit that lately I have been alot more emotionally volatile. The weight of life, work, fatherhood is really heavy on me right now and I have been unable to have a productive talks without us both losing our temper on eachother.

About two years ago we decided she would quit her job and be a stay at home mom. I was totally on board with this but unfortunately it just is starting to get increasingly impossible with this God awful economy. She picked up babysitting some family members for an extra 300 a week which helps a ton. But latey shes been wanting to step away from that jig but losing that extra $1200 a month is just not something we can afford right now. This has been a point of contention and her reasoning is valid as my kids specifically my son doesn't not super enjoy the company every day.

Anyway to my own personal struggles, lately I've had a rough time coping with certain realities of my life. So much has changed in the last few years and my life now just feels like work, kids, chores, etc. No time for myself, no quality time with my wife, no stress relief. I feel very under appreciated and I'm sure she feels the same. I miss having her as a friend someone I could just talk to and laugh with for hours, someone I could have fun with and be myself around. I wish every single conversation wasnt just about the kids, or something we need to pay for or something that needs to be done around the house.

I brought all this up to her not long ago and spoke about it in our first therapy session the other day and she agreed. We planned on trying to have more date nights and genuine time together. Thats essentially a very brief summary of everything.

Fast forward to Last night, all the kids are asleep, we get into bed around 10pm and I just wanna stay up maybe throw something on tv and just chat a bit. She almost immediately asks if I want to continue the covo from earlier (regarding the babysitting job) and I said not right now I'd rather talk about it another time and she immediately got triggered. Saying we never take time to talk about important stuff (which is untrue). I admittedly got a bit irritated too saying its 10pm its just not the time and I'm tired of constantly having these talks. Well she storms out of the room. I (foolishly) follow her and then boom. Completely unhinged argument. Me ranting and finances and being stressed. Her ranting.about her own stuff. Nothing productive. Just rude and insulting on both ends. I admittedly have trouble backing up and giving the other person space when I feel I have something to say.

Then today I ask her if we can stay up and have a serious discussion tonight and the conversation went unhinged immediately on both side. And ultimately ended with her screaming fuck me, hitting me multiple times in the face, throughing her ring saying shes done. Pretty much nuclear. It hurts because I remember when we used to love each other's company and now its like we aren't even the same people.

Im sure alot of you will tell me this is unsalvagable and to leave, press charges ect. I do not want to go that route. Im really hoping therapy can help us. I feel lost in life in general right now and the last thing I want is my family split apart. Feel free to ask any questions for details or give any advice.

Discussion Don’t hold grudges against your kids. You never know how long you have with them (TW: Death)

My 26 year-old second cousin, a police sergeant, wrecked his cruiser and died while en route to responding to a car crash. He and his father (my first cousin) hadn’t spoken much in 4 years due to a heated argument and a resulting grudge.

His dad is absolutely crushed. He’ll never get a chance to make things right with his son.

Don’t assume you have time to fix things with your kids, your parents, or anyone else that you care about. Nobody lives forever, and nobody knows how long their life is going to be.

Dads: if you have a call to make or a text to send that you’ve been putting off, then just do it. Please don’t end up like my cousin, who now has a lifetime of regret ahead of him.

Story Found a folder of old photos of my daughter and some I had never seen

We moved my daughter into her dorm in September. I made a spreadsheet of everything she needed and she made fun of it and then used it all morning while we packed the car. On the drive up I told my wife I was going to be fine. I was ok at the dorm and then about ten minutes into the drive home I started crying and had to pull over, and my wife drove the rest of the way.

A buddy who did this two years ago told me to let her text first, so that is what I have been doing. She texts about once a week and it is usually to ask for something, the last one was “can you mail my winter coat, the gray one.” I figure if she is asking me for stuff she is doing ok. I found out from her roommate’s mom that she made the rowing team her second week.

A couple of weeks ago I was looking for old tax files on an external drive in my desk drawer and found a folder of photos from when she was little, and no I am not posting any, she would kill me. My wife took most of them, I was at the office a lot back then, and some I had never seen. For those of you who have done this already, is it normal that those are the ones I keep looking at? Getting them off that drive and onto my phone took most of a night, and now they are on the Times frame on my desk. When I am muted on an earnings call I flip it over to her photos and half the time it is the one of her at six with no front teeth.

That was the same year she told her class my job was “watching red and green numbers,” which I guess is fair. There is also one of her at seven on her bike right before she crashed, I let go of the seat too early and I still feel kind of bad about that one.

If she knew the one with no front teeth was on my desk she would make me take it down. I am mailing her coat tomorrow and not saying anything about the frame.

Support What should I have done?

• Upvotes

Hi fellow dads, 9 year lurker here. I’m not sure if I’m asking for advice or support. I was out with my kid (9, F) getting something from the grocery store. I was putting the shopping cart away.

I turned around when I heard her scream. It took me a second to figure out what was going on. A kid roughly her age and size was behind her. I then realized he had grabbed her by the shoulder/neck and hair. My daughter was crying and in pain. He wasn’t letting go. The other kid’s parents were telling their kid to let go, as far as I recall. When I yelled at him to let go of her, they started yelling at me that their kid is autistic. They got his hand away. I hugged my daughter because my concern in that moment was whether she was okay, and talked her through some breathing. She was sobbing and terrified.

The couple and their kid bolted to their car while I held my daughter. We went to our car, and I explained to her that it’s not the kid’s fault and also that it’s not hers, that the parents should’ve made sure their child isn’t hurting other people especially if they’re taking him to crowded places. She’s really anxious about going out. That whole experience was really scary for her, also because it was so random. He had yanked some of her hair and she has red marks on her shoulder and neck. She’s also upset that the adults ran off as if they were just trying to not get in trouble instead of waiting while holding him back for a minute, so they could apologize or check on the person their kid had just attacked. I feel like I failed her. I don’t know what else I could’ve or should’ve done. It’s been replaying in my head all day.

More seriously, we've been fortunate enough to have a daughter who loves helping out, whether it's cooking, emptying the laundry or getting the firewood ready.

She spent close to an hour diligently carrying one piece at time and dumping it in the pile at the top of this small slope.

Advice Request Having a wonderful fall day with the wife and 2 kids. Talk me in/out of a third.

Two girls, 3 and 6. I just did an Olympic triathlon this summer for the first time in seven years. My job is great but demanding. Kids play with each other and actually help clean up, set the table, etc. I feel like I’ve gotten my life back after years of exhaustion and zero free time.

I love my life and I love my wife and it’s making me want to have another kid. I know it’s going to make my life kind of suck for the next 2 years. But we’ve done it before so we know what we’re signing up for. If I’m honest, having a boy is something I would like to do, but I also am terrified of having twins.

This is not really a serious post, I’m sorry to say that I won’t actually make my child-bearing decisions based on Reddit comments, but please humour me.

Advice Request How do I tell my alcoholic dad (that I love very much) that I dont want his grandchildren to visit?

I love my dad very much and he loves his grandchildren but I dont want them to see him drinking. For that reason I dont want them to visit him but I dont know how to best break that news to him.

I have given up on trying to make him quit, he has made his choice and it is slowly killing him. When he visits us he can manage to not drink for a couple of hours and he is more then welcome then but when we are at his place the temptation becomes to much and I dont want my children to see him that way.

He keeps asking when we will visit him next time and I am running out of credible excuses and I dont know how I will tell him without threatening our relationship.

I dont expect anyone here to be able to offer a perfect solution I just dont know anyone else to ask (that is a seperate problem)

Any advice is appreciated.

Tips And Tricks If you need a cheap easy fun kids birthday party game idea, try this one

Post image

For my sons birthday party, we put a hula hoop on the ground and placed a marker a few feet away, the goal is for the kids to try and kick the soccer ball into the hula hoop without going over. If they make it in the hula hoop, they got a candy, if they miss, they go to the back of the line. We had a whole line kids wanting to play and it lasted a long while, everyone had fun

Story "Your best days are with me, right?"

Yesterday I hit a deer on my way into work. Had to spend a good chunk of the day dealing with insurance and tow trucks and figuring out transportation. Not to mention being annoyed that I have to spend at least an unexpected $1,000( deductible on the car insurance). While it was nothing like losing a job or having a death in the family, it was still a frustrating day, and I was in a mood.

Shortly before she went to bed, I mentioned to my 4 year old I had a bad day. In response, she looked at me and said "Your best days are either me, right." Which of coarse I told they are. She did an excellent job there of giving me a mood lift, and perspective change. And 1 of many reasons why I love being her Dad.

Mom is gone for a school retreat and the kids went with, but dad stays home and house sits due to work.

Does he watch football?

Shooting Range?

Drinking?

Or does he hop in his lab once hes home from work and begins project "make the old ps4 run linux?"

How do you dads spend your time when you're actually alone for once?

Support I’m 39. My son is almost 2. I had a stroke this week.

Well, dads. I didn’t see this one coming.

Lost my job in June - using redundancy pay at the moment. Had a great summer off with my boy and fiancé. Job hunt looked promising…

Then Wednesday: PICA stroke. Now I can’t swallow and have difficulty speaking. Numbness in parts of my face on the left side. Seems it could’ve been worse but I’m 39 ffs. Wedding next year. Prepping for baby #2.

Anyone been through anything similar? I’m trying to keep a level head but can’t help but wonder what might happen. I’m not prepared for this.

Story My kids ‘accidentally’ hit me in the balls all the time

So I’m a tall guy, 6’5, and my little ones (5 and 3 boys) are both eye level with my nuts. Me getting hit is such a common occurrence that my oldest, who is in kindergarten, drew a picture at school of daddy on the ground after being hit in the balls.

At this point, I don’t know if the vasectomy worked or I have so much trauma they don’t produce anymore.

The boys love corn hole so today I built them a corn hole set. Not even 5 minutes into playing, my youngest goes to throw the bean bag - it slips out his hand during the wind up - right into the ol’ family jewels. Everyone laughs. I’m laying on the ground ready to vomit.

This feels like a never ending episode of Jackass.

It might be time to just start wearing a cup around the house.

Advice Request How do I explain my 8yo son that i won’t allow him to play Roblox

My son is 8 and is getting more and more interested in playing Roblox. He’s seen some stuff on YouTube and some of his classmates are playing. I am a gamer myself and have been playing games more than 35 years…
I know a bit too well how awfull Roblox is and will not allow it. He can play Minecraft, and pretty much anything on Nintendo Dwitch that is suitable for his age, including Zelda.

How do i explain this to him? Had anyone had this talk with their kids? Do i tell him about the risks of chatting with strangers and possibly pedophiles? Do i have to convince him that the games are utter shit?
Or should i just drop the bomb that Roblox isn’t happening until he is 16? (By then i fully expect him to appreciate proper games)

How have you handled this talk?
I’d love to know…

Edit: wow, that is a lot of feedback! Thanks fellow dads!
I will not be able to answer all comments, but I’ll think i know how i will be handling this

It will remain a hard no, but I will explain that Roblox is not a safe place and that will be enough i hope. That’s a good enough reason in my opinion.

Advice Request Model engines

• Upvotes

I’d like to build a model engine with my little girl.
When I was a kid, my uncle gave my brother and I a couple burned out lawn mower engines to take down and learn from- super educational. Has anyone found a nice model engine kit, something that you can actually fuel and run, that you can assemble with your kids? Bunch of them on Amazon, curious is anyone has enjoyed any particular kit. Thank you gentlemen.

Advice Request Heading to the hospital to say goodbye to Grandpa…

My 9-year-old has been lucky in that she’s had all four of her grandparents active in her life, but that’s ending some time this week. Of course, he’s her clear favorite. Since she was old enough to interact with people, the two of them have been inseparable.

She knows grandpa is very sick, she’s specifically asked if he’s dying and, up until yesterday, we had a reasonable hope that he’d get better. She and I are heading to the hospital to be with mom and grandma, and last minute advice is very welcome.

Discussion 2nd grade teacher, parents ask me which apps are "worth it" for screen time, which ones are y'all liking?

Every conference season I get asked how to make the ipad a functional activity and I want to give a better answer than just bashing screentime altogether. In class, the kids who use screens to make something (draw, build, write) talk about it differently than kids who mostly watch or tap through games. But I only see them talk about it, not actually use anything specific. I also know every family has different safety standards when it comes to online activity.

Parents, what has genuinely been good in your house? Educational apps for first and second graders especially.
