Discussion A tweet that has me thinking.

Post image

I don’t know if Riot can copy what valve has created with Deadlock. The atmosphere and setting so what I think makes deadlock so enjoyable. Yes the gameplay is amazing and the moba aspects are great but I just don’t think riot will even try to copy valve and make a deadlock clone. What is all y’all’s thoughts.

Are Riot/Blizz/Valve still in the weird 3-way joust they've been in the last 10-15 years? I feel like the whole thing kind of died down after the auto-battler fad died out and Artifact flopped.

I mean, Valve never removed the "Thank you, Blizzard" from Dota's credits so who knows.
Blizzard could try to develop the Stadium mode into something more Moba like

I feel like that was their plan but it died too quickly

I feel like Stadium is still doing fine, no?

It is doing fine, but OW discourse on the internet = the game is literally dead.

People are currently extra annoyed at the balance but that has happened to every single live service game I've ever played.

people calling that game dead is wild when it has way more players than val and deadlock. it's just people only use steam numbers and dont count all of bnet players and console players

you can't say it has more players than valorant when blizzard doesn't publish its numbers publically.

You might want to check with the times, consensus seems to ve "overwatch os back!"

Overwatch is in a weird place culturally in my experience. Most people I know who are playing it/have been for the past two years seem to agree the game is in a great place and has only been getting better, even before Rivals competition, but its name still brings up scorn and memories of broken promises with the general gaming populace

The game still hasn't really recovered from all the Overwatch 2 announcement/release badwill even with all the great changes

The people with those opinions of overwatch in my experience barely ever played it. Unfortunately, it’s just a stick for people to beat it with. Games in a great place rn.

Not really. From my recent experience, queue times are significantly longer than any other gamemode.

1

u/whostheme Feb 25 '26

It is but it's not even a popular game mode in OW. All my friends that play it don't bother with stadium

u/yesat Feb 25 '26

One thing I will say with Stadium is that they may have shot themselves in the foot trying to adopt a few thing too fast.

And also they did the Moba sin of distancing the items and especially what they look like and what they do with the recent changes.

maybe dead was the wrong word, but i don't think it's as popular as they'd hoped. I don't know anyone that plays it regularly

Blizzard are doing a mobile moba now.

Just seen the trailer, its more of a Brawl Stars clone

Is valve in competition with anyone? I mean they kind of occupy their own space in the gaming industry. The closest is epic but it's not much of a competition.

I'm referring to how Blizz and Valve got into it over the DOTA naming rights, which Valve eventually won, and how Blizz was then behind in getting their own MOBA out the door (HotS would release 3 years after DOTA 2 and 6 years after League). Though they had success with Hearthstone, and afterwards Riot tried their own card game with LoR while Valve did Artifact. Then there's Valorant being pretty on the nose combining Overwatch style heroes with Counter-Strike's gameplay

Oh I had no idea that was a thing that happened lol, learn something new every day

Think it might have been around the same time Bethesda sued Mojang over the game scrolls since Bethesda owned the elder scrolls

Dont forget about Artifact, and not that Overwatch may or may not have had an influence on Valorant, I feel like the inspiration is more CS + Rainbow6.

On top of all this though, there was also the auto battler "fight", of DOTA Auto Chess, HS Battlegrounds and Teamfight Tactics, and there was also valve trying to get in on the Battle Royale market, though I don't know how serious it was with Danger Zone.

And of course there is just the whole, Overwatch is just a straight up rip off of Team Fortress 2.

Imo the only competition valve has rn is riot, CS and Val are direct competitors and so are League and DotA. CS absolutely doing better esports wise and Val has been (very slowly) dying off due to the esports franchising, util changes/nerfs, and too many new agents.

"CS absolutely doing better esports wise and Val has been (very slowly) dying off due to the esports franchising, util changes/nerfs, and too many new agents."

And League has done much much better than dota as well, so its not rly one sided

52

u/vixiara Feb 24 '26

Definitely not as competitive between them anymore, but I think they're still the biggest three in the West.

17

u/yesat Feb 24 '26

What is also weird is how they have each their own split in the Asian Market.

China has the 3, Korea and Japan have Blizzard and Riot, South East Asia is big on Valve (via Dota).

7

u/pokealm Feb 24 '26

blizz shot themselves on the foot, so no

2

u/gravygrowinggreen Viscous Feb 24 '26

Valve really isn't in the game development business anymore. I don't think they view riot or blizz as true competitors. Valve is in the game distribution business, and they print money on it. Their developers make games as a way to pass the time between yacht vacations.

2

u/SpamThatSig Feb 25 '26

yea riot came out on top

1

u/sillaf27 Feb 24 '26

They co-exist pretty well imo. Between the three of them they all fill pretty different niches. Blizz has OW, Riot has League and Valorant, and Valve has CS:GO, and DOTA (not counting deadlock because it’s not finished yet). Riots and Valves game are pretty similar but different enough that they have their own massive dedicated communities.
