Discussion A tweet that has me thinking.

Post image

I don’t know if Riot can copy what valve has created with Deadlock. The atmosphere and setting so what I think makes deadlock so enjoyable. Yes the gameplay is amazing and the moba aspects are great but I just don’t think riot will even try to copy valve and make a deadlock clone. What is all y’all’s thoughts.

If we're talking atmosphere, after Arcane I'm down for some Piltover fights. Like, if they really do Runeterra Deadlock I'll at least try that out

Ah I see you're new to Valve games subreddits my friend. See what you're supposed to do is shit on Riot games and call all of their games terrible, even if the thread is in no way possible related to Riote Games or any of their intellectual property.

Their games aren't terrible. I liked valorant quite a bit in beta. But their monitization is terrible and anti consumer compared to valve.

Valve’s monetization is literally gambling. It’s very hard to be any more anti-consumer than pushing a literal gussied up slot machine as your money maker.

“But you can sell skins on a market place and recoup your losses!” Cool man, you spent $75 in cases and got $25 back. You still spent $50 for what the equivalent to a mid tier skin bundle in Valorant would be, except you didn’t get a knife. Again, it’s slots with somehow an even worse return on investment.

I LOVE Valve games, I have thousands of hours in L4D, CS and i’m on my way to that with Deadlock, but we gotta stop pretending like their monetization practices are in any way shape or form ethical or consumer friendly. Because they’re not, and i’m tired of seeing people try to argue that FOMO is more unethical and anti consumer than literal gambling.

You guys are talking about totally different things. I'm saying what the experience of playing and spending no money is like. Not what the cosmetics cost. I never spent a dime on CS and only bought battle passes in Dota.

The monetization of Valorant and League is not champions/agents. Yeah you can pay to unlock them, but both games are so generous with Blue Essence/Champion Capsules/Chests/Kingdom Credits that you will never not be able to play whatever champion/agent you’re interested in.

By the time you’re level 30 in league and can play ranked, you’ll have like half the roster unlocked if not more. You can even save up BE and unlock new champions from the get go. The simply do not make their money on champions.

The monetization is the skin shops. So if we’re comparing monetization, it’s skin shops vs slot machines

Idk how you guys keep saying this. I'm telling you I played both these games for probably 100 hours each (so yeah, only causally) and I couldn't play the characters I wanted to play. That was my experience with these games.

You are talking about being a loyal player of said game. I'm not.

When was the last time you played League?

I’ve never paid for a champion and I only have a few that are locked. Out of a roster of like, 180

-1

u/timmytissue Feb 25 '26

Probably around 2013. I played mostly lux mid at the time and some different champions in the capture point mode that I liked more because I never learned the shop in league. I was always a Dota player so league was more of a chill and not think game for me.

But I did put in at least 100 hours in 2013 lol

u/BakerUsed5384 Feb 25 '26

Yeah they’ve changed it SO much since you last played.

I’m telling you, nowadays, you can unlock any champion you want whenever you want with the smallest amount of grind.

And i’m guessing you also played Valorant before Kingdom Credits were introduced.

3

u/timmytissue Feb 25 '26

Ok well good to hear. At the time you got a rotating roster of free champs and I think I actually unlocked maybe like 4 or 5 over my time with it.

Valorant is what really upset me cause I played probably 50 hours post launch and got like one more agent unlocked. Each having their own unlock quest thing meant I kind went towards one and switched so it took a long time. I had a couple like halfway unlocked but the progress wasn't transferable.

3

u/BakerUsed5384 Feb 25 '26

They still do the free champ rotation on top of it being easy to unlock whoever.

Valorant also did away with the contract system and went with a system similar to Blue Essence. It is more monetized than BE because you can’t use it to unlock new agents for the first two weeks, but it’s still WAY easier to grind out agents vs when the game released.

u/TudasNicht Feb 25 '26

Totally understandable when you got the old experience, it improved heavily while still keeping the feeling of "Oh I can unlock a new champion", which also makes it better to decide on what to play instead of them being available from the start and being overwhelmed.

Both companies' games can be played from beginning to end without ever having to spend anything so your point is moot.

u/timmytissue Feb 25 '26

Idk how you guys can act so dense about this. You can't join league of valorabt and have access to the whole playable at of characters. That's a downside plain and simple. It's a roadblock to me going back to those games ever.

Do you think I'm just lying they it stopped me from playing them? It's not moot.

4

u/TudasNicht Feb 25 '26

Okay? But League champs are so piss cheap now that it doesn't matter. If at all it's a good system so that people don't try a different champion every game and can focus more on the gameplay. Also DotA has also champions locked nowadays when you are new afaik?

Dota has a new player mode. I'm not sure if you have to play it but it's help you learn not to punish you or ask you to pay. It removes complex heroes that would be a nightmare for you if you tried them. (Edit. I looked it up and you can just skip the learning mode with a console command. But if you are actually new you should play in that mode first)

Gemini tells me it would cost between $650 – $750 USD to unlock all champs instantly. I know of course you can get them other ways.

3

u/TudasNicht Feb 25 '26

Yeah instantly but why would you ever unlock champs with money, no one does that tbf. they made champs so cheap now that its troll if you ain't rich.

Even tho I get that point there is no reason to have all 172 champs from the start when you can always buy the ones you wanna play easily with Blue Essence.

But good to know you can skip it for Dota. I played invoker sometimes back then and had a new steam acc and couldn't play him in ranked in the beginning afaik? Its some time ago so I'm not sure, maybe it's just how it's intended or it's not even exactly like that, just remember something like that.

1

u/timmytissue Feb 25 '26

If nobody does it then why do they cost money.

Eh, pros and cons, i like that I can buy a knife in Valorant and its only like 60-70 dollars, vs cs its more like 200-300 for one that you don't really want, but its the best you can afford.

At the very least you can resell in cs though.

That being said, CS is just a better game.

1

u/timmytissue Feb 24 '26

Brother what. Both of those are insanely expensive for a cosmetic. I'm talking about what the free to play experience is. Valve games let you play the whole game for free.

12

u/PogChampHS Feb 24 '26

I am confused, is valorant also not free?

-1

u/timmytissue Feb 24 '26

No the heroes are locked behind payment?! The game is not free. It was mostly free in beta.

7

u/FlyingCouch Venator Feb 24 '26

You can unlock the agents with playtime alone, which is what 95% of the playerbase has done. All of Valorant is free, the only thing that costs money is cosmetics. Even CS had a pricetag just to play at one point

4

u/TudasNicht Feb 25 '26

CS literally has a price tag unless you want to play with cheaters, but even then you still get them till you play FaceIT or have 2000 hours for trust factor.

-2

u/timmytissue Feb 24 '26

I played it a bunch. Seemed to me you had to play like 30-50 hours for a agent. I'm not saying the dedicated fans don't go that route, but they cost money for a reason. Many people buy them.

7

u/FlyingCouch Venator Feb 24 '26

its absolutely not 30-50 hours to get an agent. that's nearly 100 games. I'd estimate it's maybe 10 if I'm being generous, and that's if you're starting fresh account. Every new agent has a mini "battlepass" when they release that unlocks them for free that you'll complete in about less than the usual amount of time. You are vastly overestimating the amount of people who spend money to unlock agents; the option exists but amongst the many people I play/have played with none of them ever bought an agent with real currency.

1

u/timmytissue Feb 25 '26

I played during beta and after release and I played probably 50 hours after release and I only ever unlocked one more agent other than the 2 ones that I locked much faster. It gives you 2 freebies and then they take a long time. 10 games for an agent is insane idk what you are talking about.

I think I'm just using the wrong term. I mean the free to play model. Not the monetization.

4

u/TudasNicht Feb 25 '26

CS2 isn't F2P.

1

u/timmytissue Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 25 '26

How so?

3

u/TudasNicht Feb 25 '26

You need Premiere or the game is unplayable tbh.
