Discussion Violet is boring in a boring way
Violet isn't the only character with a "normal" personality, but other characters with a similair personality atleast have something else going on.
Graves personality wise is pretty much just a moody teenager who wants her parents to pay attention to her. Pretty basic considering everything. But the way the cast talks to her and how she responds isnt totally stereotypical which makes it interesting. Celeste makes fun of her for being moody, she shows a nice side to her when talon asks her to talk to dead for him and she shows interest when haze asks her about a future at the OSIC. Plus she has the whole necromancy and lich thing going on giving her dialogue that isnt about being a moody teenager.
The problem is that all of violets tropes are played completely straight. Nothing interesting is done about her need of validation from her parents. Nothing interesting is done with her being super scared. Nothing interesting is done with her being in college. She talks a little more in depth about her art than just going "jeez this painting looks good" but not enough that its interesting.
The closest we get to something self aware is seven thinking she is cliche and thats it. I dont think her character is like hopeless or whatever but man is the next batch of convo's going to have to carry. A convo of her trying to relate to pocket and them going "what the hell are you talking about" (not literally). Or her owing wraith money for opioids would be enough for me.

I’m kinda ok with a few normal characters in this psychotic roster. Makes them stand out
6
u/Draggoner 20h ago
You kind of need to be a bit psychotic or have some major stakes to enter a ritual where you possibly die and fight against unknown or known mass murderers.

u/Limping_for_e-girls 20h ago
The problem isn't her being normal. Paige is a normal person. Infernus and Abrams have very normal personalities, too. But these characters have something that keeps them from being boring.
Paige is very scared and awkward, which are normal character traits, but because she's written well, it's still interesting to listen to her conversations.

Deadlock fans when a character isn't a batshit crazy cruel power-hungry sociopath demon:

u/Extreme-Way7671 20h ago
Graves, Paige, Infernus, all of those are pretty much average joe's but they have a little twist or an entertaining personality that makes them interesting
22
u/DRAWDATBLADE 20h ago
Tbh I do think the demon theory was way more interesting. A demon pretending to be human and being terrified of someone finding out is much more compelling as a concept than...an art student. The managed to hit basically every trope for a Chinese character too lmao.
She had to have a ton of scrapped abilities or something there's NO way this ult was what they originally had. Her most interesting spell is a tacked on passive.

I mean Paige is normal compared to the rest of the cast but they lean into the literary references and she has the hook of her brother that gets you a little invested into her participating in the ritual. Violet just doesn’t have that same bit of nuance and it’s a perfectly valid criticism. She feels too one dimensional.
7
u/Material_Shallot_652 20h ago
Vyper isn't any of those, but she's not just a normal person either. That is an incredibly disingenuous argument.

deadlock fans when the perhaps world ending ritual where you only join if it's really worth risking your life has a regular painter join and not even in a comical way:

Im sorry some of us got into the game initially for cool world building and interesting dialogue.
4
u/moochacho1418 20h ago
Yeah thats why most people play mobas, the dialogue
7
u/Blackjackal21 16h ago
Idk what to tell you. Game is more than just a moba. Presentation is a huge part of what makes games standout in a crowd or gather an audience. Thats why its spent 2-3 years pivoting away from generic sci fi and building a new foundation. I tried the game over a year and half ago off a friend's recommendation. Felt clunky, didn't look good and was running poorly on my PC. Only considered retrying it earlier this year after seeing a bunch of clips and how much polish had been to it after the new blood update rolled out. Wanted to try characters that weren't around previously because good dialogue interactions caught my eye in my feed and that made me curious.

u/starberryslay Mina 16h ago
Game is more than just a moba.
And if you have seen the leaks, this game is LITERALLY more than a MOBA. They want different game modes to explore this world further, it's going to be valves next TF2 with one of the best competitive games attached to it. so 3 years down the line you're gonna be so correct and the statement "that's why most people play MOBAs, the dialogue" is gonna be so factually wrong

u/Vegetable-Error-2068 20h ago
No you didn't.
Y'all are reaching for shit to be mad about.

Bro really can’t fathom that people like a games characters for more than their abilities

u/HEROBR4DY 20h ago
She has no play or personality besides a coming of age plot. She doesn’t vibe with any of the characters and pretty much everyone (besides Billy) kinda just pitty her

"Violet isn't the only character with a "normal" personality, but other characters with a similair personality atleast have something else going on." Its the first thing I say cmon

u/thebluehoursky 20h ago
she already has stuff going on.
4
u/Limping_for_e-girls 20h ago
What is going on with her that isnt
- shes an student artist
- shes scared and insecure
- shes desperate for her parents approval

u/mrturretman Paradox 20h ago
She’s seen victor naked

u/Limping_for_e-girls 20h ago
And it leads to 0 interesting conversations

u/Limping_for_e-girls 18h ago
"I dont think her character is like hopeless or whatever but man is the next batch of convo's going to have to carry." kinda sounds like we agree
-2
u/thebluehoursky 18h ago
what’s going on with bebop that isn’t he wants a cure for ms Shelly? what’s going on with wraith that isn’t her being a gambler? what’s going on with Apollo that isn’t him being an arrogant kid?
if we’re reductive - believe it or not - it reduces the characters to be boring. you’re just a fucking weirdo.

u/Limping_for_e-girls 18h ago
Bebop is a a pit fighter with an intense rivalry with lash. Bebop is a robot golem who works at a scrapyard. Bebop isnt programmed with morals and has made his own. He also cares deeply for others even inviting them to his own home after the ritual.
Apollo is a Ixian an opressed and discriminated species in deadlock. He is the son of of a warlord currently fighting a (civil?) war. He is a child prodigy. He also shows he can show respect to others in a ton of his dialogue.
I also wouldnt call any of these characters boring so they wouldnt really need any other stuff going on.
0
u/Basil2322 5h ago
Bebop is a golem who has some fun dialogue with the Lash. Apollo is the child of an Ixian war lord his existence gives us information about the world. Yes not every character is super in depth but the characters you named are all more in depth than a generic art major, I could walk to the art building on my campus and find someone like Violet I can’t find someone like Bebop. Why can’t you guys just accept Violet is boring lore wise and needs some work? Don’t you want Violet to become more interesting?
1
u/thebluehoursky 5h ago
you could find a student on your campus whose art has been put into the MoMA? congrats on being at such a prestigious institution
1
u/Basil2322 5h ago
Is that the one interesting part of her lore you can think of? I notice you didn’t answer the others questions about what’s interesting about her. Anyway I mean I can find someone with her personality because she’s generic and uninteresting especially if the most interesting thing about her is being good at art.
2
u/Ochemata 18h ago
She's participating in a murder ritual over nothing. That's pretty batshit crazy and sociopathic.
14
u/Limping_for_e-girls 20h ago
Ill add that I also dont think it helps that she plays straight into a bunch of stereotypes that are already prevelant in a bunch of similair games to deadlock.

The only thing funnier than how much disdain there is for this fictional anime character is how butthurt it makes people who feel compelled to defend this fictional anime character for some reason lol

I'm not just talking about this character, this whole sub is just non-stop whining. Next week it will be something different. It's crazy to read what some people are saying, so chronically online it's sad.

thats why they only release a few lines at a time. get player feed back then work on it because this is a beta. go say it on the forums what want.

u/renadeer52 20h ago
Her kits interesting but the way she talks and acts just makes her feel like a self insert. When all the other chats have interesting lines introducing them in the character vote, all violet has to say is "hey, I'm violet."
And from what I understand in her interactions, the only reason she's in the ritual is to prove something to herself. Beyond that and her love for painting, she has no ambition.
6
u/Carry2sky Mirage 20h ago edited 20h ago
My only gripe is that she feels more like someone's internet OC/self insert as opposed to a god killer. Paige feels similar, but I think her own dorkiness kind of plays it down. Also Violets summary makes no mention of why she learned cool art magic in the first place as opposed to just doing really good art.
Edit: also the cognitive dissonance of her being in the ritual for basically attention and exposure, but her dialogue and interactions not making her have much of an ego (unlike lash)

"Fear of becoming nothing in life" — girl you're about to summon an omega evil god for 15 minutes of fame.
-1
u/Carry2sky Mirage 17h ago
Meanwhile I legitimately believe lash is trying to achieve godhood, or some equivalent. I don't think its for any deep purpose, he just wants a vessel to match his ego. Either that or true internal peace so he can escape a hidden self belief conflict.
His summary is still only five words but I get this much personality out of him.
3
u/Tim_Lwry Celeste 17h ago
I think he might actually want to one-up Bebop by helping Shelly. There's more to him for sure.
3
u/twinkledaurora 20h ago
I think this whole new batch of heroes are all support/util. pretty cool honestly although its not my playstyle
3
u/Extreme-Way7671 20h ago
Danny definitely isn't a support
3
u/RocketHops 20h ago
Danny supports the great Maximilian Fairfax with how much he glazes him.
2
u/Extreme-Way7671 20h ago
Glaze ? Glaze ?! There is no glazing involved here sir, Maximilian Fairfax is the greatest of all of us or should I say a god amongst men and thus deserve the upmost amount of recogniton for his life saving works ! especially in North Ixia ! If it weren't for Maximilian Fairfax you wouldn't be able to use reddit to talk to me right now !
This post is certified by Fairfax industries PR departement
With Fairfax all is fair !

u/Limping_for_e-girls 20h ago
Eh I think violet is more of a spirit nuker and tempo character like apollo and pocket than support/util.

I think you are on to something there, there is no play in the dialogue besides Billy. She’s just the straight man but she failed to ground anything cause she’s just so damn timid, it’s not a good trait to have when you have people joining a death battle battle

u/Plus-Accountant-1647 20h ago
I think having a regular normal person in a roster of crazy characters is interesting tbh

u/MrFaebles Solomon 20h ago
Her animations and vibe also feel the most unfinished of the new heros released in the last 2 sets.
Her M1 looks super stiff.
Her ult and her reload look great.
Her still life being dynamic to skins is clever.
But overall she feels like the afterthought hero added to the others. And I think the community picked up on that right away. Very surprised she beat nurse.
1
u/MunchingOnThatBox 6h ago
do u guys forget the game is literally early access and invite only still not every single animation voice line and lore drop is final
2
u/Tim_Lwry Celeste 5h ago
We are allowed to give feedback. Stop trying to pretend that we have to just eat it up. This is Valve we're talking about.
1
u/MunchingOnThatBox 5h ago
did i say you need to eat it up literally anywhere in that comment
i’m saying they’re still in early access so they have more than enough opportunity to flesh out her animations and lore1

u/MrFaebles Solomon 50m ago
Im comparing to the other releases hero. I have been playing since 2024. So ya I know its a beta lol. Im taking part in a discussion here, you can join us if you want.

u/Destroyer_2_2 20h ago
Yeah I wish she wasn’t also a student. That seems like a poor and very boring choice.
0
u/Tim_Lwry Celeste 18h ago
For a character that draws she has remarkably little charm in both her abilities and dialogue. Like, Still Life is probably the coolest part of her kit because it's unique for different characters, but the rest of her abilities don't have any interesting variance or impact to them.
0
u/ChannL40 6h ago
You and all the other Violet whiners on this sub should work for Valve's character design team. I'm sure you would have come up with something way better. Y'all are so passionate about this and you sound like you really would have written a better character.
Anyway, is that a MOBA in my story game? Whoa, who put that there?

I wish she accidentally painted a glyph or some shit accidentally summoning a demon which is how she got her powers but no just ordinary Joe schmo
